Akufo-Addo lobbied for Global Citizen Festival to be held in Ghana; Okraku Mantey

Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Mark Oktaku Mantey has revealed how President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo lobbied for the Global Citizen Festival to be organized in Accra.

He said the festival organisers initially wanted to hold it Nigeria, however, the President stepped in to lobby for it to come to Ghana.

Ghana was picked by the organizers partly because President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had showed interest in having it take place in Ghana.

In an interview on Hitz FM which was monitored by The Chronicle, the Deputy Minister mentioned that the concert was part of efforts aimed at marketing Ghana’s tourism, “and so, President Akufo-Addo showed interest, originally Global Citizen, they wanted to go to Nigeria, for some good reasons, we were the ones who won,” he said.

The event made headlines when the President was booed by a section of the crowd as he arrived on stage to deliver his welcome address.

This has had the governing administration reacting to it. According to a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Owusu Bempah Bonsu, the NDCs perpetuated the orchestration of heckling of the president for political scores.

Mr. Owusu Bempah said it was disgraceful for the NDC to organize its supporters to go and shout down the President in the manner it happened.

“Truly, politicians don’t expect to be popular all the time. Getting on with running the country is a job where you have to take difficult decisions a lot of the time. There’s nothing wrong if President Akufo-Addo goes to an event and receives cold reception. That’s a normal occurrence.

“But then, to allow politics to take center stage at such an event and single out the President unfairly for political point scoring raises serious concerns. To put it more bluntly, it is pure evil and utter disgrace for the NDC to organize its supporters to go and shout down at the President the manner it happened,” he said.

… And, there was a Funeral…

When a Lawyer makes an application in court, it can either be MOTION ON NOTICE, that is to say an application telling the other party that you want the court to grant a relief, which he may or may not oppose, or, MOTION EX PARTE, which is an application without notice to the other party.

To this, let me add my own: we have DEATH EX PARTE and DEATH ON NOTICE. Death is on Notice when you are sick in hospital or at home for a long time, and your condition is getting worse by the day. My father-in-law’s daughter’s cousin, a very big wig in the Ministry of Education, very recently passed away into eternity after a hectic battle with sickness for three months. We will bury her on November 5, 2022, at Aburi.

However, DEATH EX PARTE is when all of a sudden, absolutely without any notice whatsoever, a person suddenly drops dead, either through sleep or a sudden bout of sickness, heart failure, and so on.

According to the late famous Lawyer, E.D. Kumi, in this our part of the world, where the average life expectancy is about 60 years, anybody who clocks 60 should be on notice that you are on your way home!!!

And so I don’t think anybody, in this world, was surprised to hear in the news that Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had received a writ of summons to appear before Almighty God at the ripe old age of 96 years!!!!

The good aspect of Death on Notice is that it puts everybody on hold, on tenterhooks, planning silently as to how the funeral should be organised, if and when the inevitable happens.

According to history, the greatest ever funeral in human memory was the funeral of ALEXANDER THE GREAT, who was buried by a 1,000 Army man strong catafalque guard that snaked across Asia with the corpse, from Babylon to its final resting place – is it Alexandria???

Watching the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on television, I remembered so well what my good friend, Hon Kofi Attoh, then Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho Central, told me in Parliament one day – he told me, surprisingly, that he was not going to the Independence Square for the swearing in ceremony of the new President, J.A. Kufuor – why Kofi?

“But Effah, it is better and clearer to watch proceedings on television – if you are there, your line of vision is limited, but at home, or in the office, on TV the cameras bring you a vivid coverage of everything…

How so true!!!

There on the TV screen was President Joe Bidden arriving in the special US President car “The Beast” which President George Bush and President Barrack Obama brought to Ghana during their respective state visits.

I hear some foreign sympathisers were driven in a bus to the place where the casket was laid, and there was the new Monarch, King Charles III, and all the eight grand children of the fallen Monarch.

Interesting – she was not buried in a cemetery or a Royal Mausoleum or in a vault, but INSIDE St George Chapel at Windsor Castle – beside her husband, Philip, her father, mother, and sister… that is British Royalty for you.

But, permit me to ask – when our President, Professor John Atta Mills, died, the British Monarch did not attend his funeral in Accra, neither did the British Premier at the time. So, why did we lower all flags in Ghana at half mast for the death of the Head of State of another country for seven days!!!

Interestingly – I did not see the Chinese leader, Xi Zinping, and the Russian Warlord – Vladimir Putin. Of course, the Ukraine leader, in his accustomed green T-shirt, was busily creating restless problems at his doorsteps!!!!

The world is really very interesting. Nothing changes, except the players – a long Kaleidoscope football match…

Court sacks Aliero as PDP senatorial candidate

0
Nigerian courts

The Federal High Court in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, on Tuesday, voided the election of a former Governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aleiro, as the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Kebbi Central District.

The trial judge, Babagana Ashigar, ruled in favour of Haruna Sa’idu who argued that he is the bona fide senatorial candidate of the PDP for the district.

Mr Saidu sued Mr Aliero, the incumbent senator of the district, the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a fresh primary for the Kebbi Central Senatorial District. He argued that the fresh primary contravened the Electoral Act 2022.

Mr Sa’idu argued that he is alive, and did not withdraw from the contest. He claimed that his name was unlawfully substituted with that of Mr Aliero, who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP after a primary election was conducted.

Mr Asghigar observed that when the first primary for the Kebbi Central was held, Mr Aleiro was in the APC.

He ruled that based on exhibits 2,21,23,24 tendered before the Court, Mr Sa’idu participated in the first primary where he was elected as the candidate having scored the highest votes while the first defendant, Mr Aliero, was still at the ruling party.

“Since the first primary election was not challenged by the 1st defendant, it is in my humble view that the first primary election for Kebbi Central Senatorial district remained authentic. I, therefore, upheld all the prayers of the plaintiff, and the judge ruled.

Responding to the judgement, counsel to Mr Aliero, Aliyu Hassan, said his client will study the judgement before taking the next line of action.

Also, counsel to Mr Sa’idu, Sule Usman, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) said the judgement, is for the good of the people of Kebbi Central District who now know who the authentic candidate of the PDP is.

Terrorists dominate Nigeria, Niger border communities –Maradi governor

Governors Aboubacar

The Governor of Niger Republic’s Maradi, Schiabou Aboubacar, has raised the alarm of terrorist activities in communities in his country and Nigeria.

Aboubacar said the insurgents were causing people sleeplessness, confirming fears that terror groups had taken over some villages in northern parts of Nigeria.

The governor spoke on Tuesday at a high-level meeting, which was held in Katsina to discuss ways to tackle insecurity in the region.

The security parley had in attendance the Governors of Katsina – Aminu Masari, Sokoto – Aminu Tambuwal, Zamfara – Bello Matawalle, and Kebbi – Atiku Bagudu.

Aboubacar, who convened the gathering, stressed that solutions were urgently required in order to defeat the terrorists.

“We are in serious trouble in this region. Everyone knows our problems are terrorists who have denied us sleep.

“Communities living around Sokoto, Zamfara and Katsina that have borders with Niger Republic hardly sleep in their communities.

“Participants in this meeting are one family; hence, we deem it necessary to sort ourselves out to see how we can tackle the insecurity menace.

“Each state is doing its best in addressing the security challenges, but it’s not enough. We have to come together to see how we can address the problem”, NAN quoted him saying.

Earlier this month, Aboubacar and the governors signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Niger Republic on the best approach to address the problem.

The United Nations (UN) estimates that in localities around the Lake Chad, over 3.2 million people are displaced.

The figure includes more than 2.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in north-eastern Nigeria, and 1 million in Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Former Lagos ‘Baale’ jailed 15 yrs for faking own kidnap

0
Former Governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aleiro

An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday sentenced a former ‘Baale’ (Chief) in Shangisha in the Magodo area of Lagos State, Mutiu Ogundare, and his brother, Opeyemi Mohammed, to 15 years imprisonment each for faking his own kidnap.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court had on 15 June discharged and acquitted the third defendant, Mr Ogundare’s wife, Abolanle.

The judge, Hakeem Oshodi, had on 15 June convicted Messrs Ogundare and Mohammed on three counts of conspiracy and fake abduction.

“I have considered the allocutus of the defence counsel. However, it is in the view of this court that the defendants showed no remorse during the trial.

“In fact, the first defendant tried to buy his way out of the court. A lesson has to be thought to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The defendants are hereby sentenced to 10 years for count one without an option of fine, one year to count two with an option of N200,000 and 15 years to count three without an option of fine.

The sentencing shall run concurrently from the day they were arrested,” Mr Oshodi said.

NAN reports that Olarewaju Ajanaku, who represented the first defendant, in his allocutus on 15 June, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

Mr Ajanaku had prayed to the court that the convict had turned a new leaf and he did not think through his action when he committed the offences.

The state prosecutor, Jubril Kareem, however, urged the court to apply the provisions of law to sentence the convict.

‘Role of smallholders in the palm oil sector overlooked’

0
Palm Oil

The First Palm Oil Barometer has challenged the negative public perception of palm oil sustainability on Smallholder farmers. While the smallholder palm oil farmers risk living in poverty, the 282-billion-dollar palm oil industry creates huge profits for companies.

A statement issued in Accra by Solidaridad said the pivotal role of smallholders in the palm oil sector, currently contributing to around 30 per cent of global production, was often overlooked in the sustainability agenda, as policies tend to focus on large industrial plantations.

It said with their contribution to palm oil production expected to grow, smallholders played an increasingly central role in rural economic development and preserving biodiversity.

The statement said with palm oil as a crucial ingredient in the diet of the poorest people on earth, and its widespread presence in products like margarine, shampoo, and biodiesel, it was here to stay.

“Supply chain-wide smallholder inclusion is crucial for sustainable palm oil production,” it said.

It said the controversial crop presented more issues and more opportunities than many people realise.

The statement said deforestation and poverty were interlinked and palm oil production figures prominently in the media as a cause of deforestation, biodiversity loss and climate change.

However, by isolating its impact on the environment from the poverty crisis, to which it was directly linked, it was easy to overlook the vital role smallholders play in palm oil production.

It said although the image of large companies growing vast expanses of oil palms as a monoculture holds, more than three million smallholders and their families produce roughly 30 per cent of the world’s palm oil.

The statement said a multitude of workers found jobs in oil palm production. In Indonesia alone, there were around 16 million workers in the palm oil sector, of which the majority was employed by smallholders.

It said the contribution of smallholders to the overall supply of palm oil was only expected to increase, as industrial-scale companies were forced to limit expansion due to zero-deforestation commitments.

Mr. Shatadru Chattopadhayay, Managing Director Solidaridad Asia, said, “Smallholders produce not even 2 per cent of certified sustainable palm oil on the market while contributing 30 per cent of the world’s supply and Governments and businesses must make smallholder inclusion part of their sustainability criteria.”

He said in the multi-billion-dollar palm oil industry, smallholder farmers do not get their fair share. Smallholders generated US$17 billion of the palm oil industry’s US$282 billion turnover in 2020, yet many did not earn enough to cover their families’ essential living costs.

Despite this, many smallholders prefer growing oil palm to other crops, like rubber or coffee, because they earn a higher and more consistent income throughout the year.

He said multiple factors could influence a farm’s profitability, including its size, labour and fertiliser costs, market access, and prices. Volatile market prices squeeze smallholder margins that are already narrow.

“It’s getting more and more difficult for farmers with all these changes in the prices. Some feel as if 50 per cent of their livelihood has been lost as the prices of the fresh fruit bunches have been slashed and, at the same time, the price of fertilizers and pesticides has risen by more than 100 per cent,” Mr. Valens Andi, Head of a Farmers’ Cooperative in West Kalimantan, Indonesia said.

He said that faced with these precarious conditions many smallholders were unable to invest in farm-level innovations or adhere to sustainability standards.

By 2030 Indonesian smallholder plantations will account for around 60 per cent of the country’s oil palm area. Supporting these smallholders to produce sustainably will be a key challenge in the coming years.

Fair value distribution is at the heart of sustainable palm oil production, while smallholders struggle to make ends meet, at the other end of the chain food manufacturers, consumer goods companies and retail take 66 per cent of the gross profits on palm oil in food, household, and body care products.

The focus on cost-cutting to optimize profits contrasts starkly with individual companies’ sustainability commitments, as well as the global climate and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal agendas.
