About 2.3 million women are said to have been diagnosed of breast cancer in 2020 while 685 deaths are recorded annually, according to a report, which also indicated that about 7.8 million women have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last five years.

Nana Agyakomah Dufie II, the Queen mother of Asante Mampong disclosed this during the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk organised by the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), with the support of Global Access to Cancer Foundation, an American-based NGO, MAYO Clinic and TBA Collective.

Women groups that participated in the walk include; the Police Ladies, students from the St. Louis College of Education, T.I. Ahmadiya SHS and students from Nurses and Midwifery Training Colleges among others.

According to the Queen mother, the Oncology Directorate of KATH recorded about 12,600 over the past five years, which she described as a worry and needed all collective efforts to fight the disease.

Nana Agyakomah entreated women and also men to screen themselves every other month for early detection to save lives.

She explained that the aim of the exercise was to educate, screen and create awareness for the public to report any abnormality in their breasts to the appropriate hospital facilities to diagnose them, since there are inadequate health facilities.

Mr. Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister for Works and Housing and Member of Parliament for Bantams, urged Ghanaians to be an advocate in the fight against breast cancer.

‘We are not illegal miners’

The chairman of the Community Mining Committee in Asaman Tamfoe in the Atiwa East district of the Eastern Region, Nana Boakye Darkwa making a point during the press conference

The Chairman of the Community Mining Committee at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atiwa East district of the Eastern Region, Nana Boakye Darkwa has indicated that they are not illegal miners, as is being speculated.

According to the Community Mining Committee chairman, who is also the Benkumhene of Asaman Tamfoe, it is unfortunate that their legitimate mining activities could be described as illegal.

It would be recalled that pandemonium broke out on Thursday September 30, 2022, between an anti-galamsey operation and some community members at Asamang Tamfoe.

Osabarima Okogyeaman Apagya Ofori IV, head of the Okyeman Environmental task force, in a joint operation with the Kibi Divisional Police Command allegedly invaded illegal mining sites at the Asamang Tamfoe community, but were resisted, leading to a violent clash.

The violent resistance led to the firing of warning shots, as the rampaging youth hurled stones at the security personnel.

It was alleged that the Chief was struck in the head by a flying stone and was rushed to Kibi Government Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

The joint team, led by the Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Magnus Reindorf Sam, retrieved a pump action gun, 2 excavators, 2 motorcycles, 1 tricycle and 2 pumping machines.

Some of the illegal miners blocked the road to prevent the team from moving out of the community with the excavator and other seized equipment.

Sixteen persons were arrested by Police in connection with the shooting incident at Asamang Tamfoe.

Speaking at the Press Conference at Asaman Atamfoe  on Monday last week, to set the record straight on the matter, Nana Boakye boldly indicated that they are not illegal miners.

He explained that President Akufo-Addo, through the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, John Mireku Duker on Saturday July 9, 2022 inaugurated the Asamang Tamfoe Community Mining.

He indicated that the Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Magnus Reindorf Sam, who was part of the joint task force was at the community mining inauguration ceremony.

He alleged that a group called Eastern Miners came to Asaman Tamfoe for mining and “we requested their mining license before granting them access to our lands, but instead of producing their mining documents, the former took them (elders of the area) to Linda Dor for negotiation.

The Benkumhene of Asaman Tamfoe, Nana Boakye averred that the leadership of Eastern miners proposed putting them (leadership of the town) on salary if they agree to allow them to mine in the area and they declined the offer.

The Chairman of the Asaman Tamfoe Community Mining said that the taskforce set up by the Okyenhene claimed President Akufo-Addo is their family member and, therefore, can shoot, injure and destroy properties in Asaman Tamfo.

He has, therefore, called on Dr. Akufo Dampare to deal with the suspects who were involved in the violent clash on Thursday and bring them to book, so as to help resolve the misunderstanding.

Youth organisation intensifies beach cleaning

A youth organisation striving towards resolving climatic situations for our planet here in Ghana has been doing beach cleaning exercises in Cape Coast for over two years.

Fridays For Future Ghana, in partnership with Soy Africa and Get Connected, has been doing its part in keeping the coastlines of Ghana clean.

“When I’m around water, I instantly go into a meditative state; I feel this boost of creativity, that is why I find it very important that the beaches and the ocean are clean,” said Micaiah Beausoleil, Co-Founder of Fridays For Future Ghana.

Fridays For Future Ghana has brought together over 200 people for its initiative to cleans beaches in the country clean.

They have sorted and separated tonnes of trash and successfully convened a few youth conferences, with the most recent at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra.

Beaches play an essential role in the ecosystem and in mitigating climate change. Some birds and terrestrial wildlife depend on beaches for their survival.

“This initiative creates an opportunity for the large-scale rehabilitation of our beaches. My goal is to see all young people become protectors of the environment, and stewards of the land, he said.

Fridays for Future Ghana, together with climate action organisations, Soy Africa, Get Connected, and climate activists Rukiya Khamis, Gloria Equiyah Agyare and Portia Mensah at their recent forum, discussed getting decision-makers and stakeholders in Ghana to ban single-use plastics.

Single-use plastic products are used once, or for a short period, before being thrown away.

The impacts of this plastic waste on the environment and our health are global and can be drastic.

Single-use plastic products are more likely to end up in our seas than reusable options

The youth summit ran for about three hours where participants shared ideas, research they have discovered and any progress that they have made.

“It’s good for the youth to come together and tackle issues like this, there is no better use of our time than defending our planet,” Justice Gad, Founder of Soy Africa, commented.

During the youth summit, elders from the community came to show support and gave some feedback.

The youth climate leaders are positioning an agenda so that Ghana’s leaders could implement rules and regulations concerning single-use plastics like using tote bags in the market and reusable water bottles instead of sachets.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Cape Coast has launched this year’s Customer Service Week to celebrate all its cherished customers.

The weeklong celebration, which is under the theme: “Customer Delight”, is meant to express the appreciation of the authority to all its valued customers.

Briefing the media at the launch on Monday, the Central Regional Manager of the Authority, Mr. Lawrence Adom, indicated that the survival of the Authority depended largely on its customers.

He said: “We are celebrating our customers, because good customer service is highly potential to the survival of every company, entity, or organisation that provides any form of service to their customers.”

“When customers are well treated, they feel valued and well valued; customers automatically become your brand ambassadors, so at DVLA, we respect our customers and value them as well,” Mr. Adom added.

Elaborating further on Peter Drucker’s popular quote that “The purpose of a business is to create a customer who creates customers,” explaining that every customer was dear to the Authority.

Getting feedback from customers

According to Mr. Adom, the Authority had always prioritised the concerns of its customers, therefore, the creation of a desk primarily responsible for interacting with customers.

The feedback would enable the Authority to provide more satisfactory service to its valued customers.

As part of the Customer Service Week celebration, the DVLA would provide health screening for its customers.

The yearly event was celebrated during the first week of October.

Any Lessons Learnt (4) Did You Really Say That, Your Excellency?

0
Opinion

Dear Your Excellency my Vice President,

About a week or so ago, it came out that during your visit to the Northern regions of Ghana, where you hail from, and met with some party gurus and other dignitaries, and you were alleged to have made an ethnic and religious based statement during that unofficial campaign trail.

My Vice President, I am not at all concerned about you campaigning because it seems General Secretary J.F. Koduais now incapable of cracking the whip, like he promised to do.

My Vice President, what I am very much concerned about is what you were alleged to have said, in your native tongue, which was transcribed into English by someone who was also in the meeting with you on that day. In summary, you were alleged to have said something like this, that, Akans and Christians do not respect Northerners and Muslims, so they hand over to them, the dirty job of a Vice President. To you, been in the Office of the Vice President is, the most demeaning, dehumanising and dirty job because the dignity of that office is just to be at the peck and call of the president.

My Vice President, I found it very hard to believe that such a fine gentleman like you could make such a statement. So, I waited for a whole week, hoping you would calm my fears by coming out with a rebuttal, but to date nothing has come from your office or from you to directly, to deny that publication and disregard it with the contempt it deserved. So, whilst waiting, I will need to crave your indulgence to express my thoughts on that statement.

My Vice President, I was in the Conference Center, that Sunday of July 31, 2022 when you spoke essentially on religious tolerance and proudly giving yourself as an example of a Muslim who someone who had been a member of an important youth group in the Methodist Church. So, for you to come and launch an attack on Christians is too much for me.

My Vice President, I am always praying that the campaign towards the NPP’s National Congress somewhere in 2023, should seek to unite us, rather than divide the Party. You see, it is very essential to know that breaking the eight would remain a dream if NPP is disunited.

One thing you must be aware of is that the NPP could have broken the Eight in 2008, but for the self-inflicted division within the Party. Many party members stood as independent candidates against the Party’s candidates in the Parliamentary Election and in some cases, splitting of votes enabled the NDC candidates to win. But for that division, the NPP would have easily won more seats and form majority in Parliament.

Disaffection among the electorates due to the division within the Party succeeded in eroding the votes of its presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, thus making him lose the election in the run-off by 84,255 votes, after leading with 133,184 votes in the first round. Out of the 230 constituencies, then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo won 99 and NDC’s John Atta-Mills won 131.

In the run-off, the NPP won in only two regions, which were the Akan based Ashanti and Eastern regions. The other three Akan dominated regions of Brong-Ahafo, Central and Western decided to vote for the NDC.

The NPP grossly underrated Akans in 2008 and the Party paid dearly for it. This you should know since you were then the running mate.

My Dear Vice President, with at least, 71% of Ghanaians being Christians and following Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, the Second Person in the Triune God, which is called the Holy Trinity, something Muslims strongly object to, it is these people who decide who should be president in Ghana and who should not.

If the alleged statement is true, and that is about you blaming Akans and Christians for putting you in the vice-presidency, a job you were alleged to have described as dirty, dehumanising and demeaning, then it is very unfortunate.

At the time when you are gradually endearing to Christendom, such a statement is a self-inflicted fatal blow to you and to the chances of the NPP should you become the flag bearer.

My Dear Vice President, if indeed you felt mistreated in your position as Vice President, why did you opt to go a second time? You, as such a brilliant person, should not have allowed yourself to be used and abused, twice.

I will end on this note that you should come out sooner than later to clear the air, because should you win the flag bearer slot, you will need the Akans and the Christians more than ever to form government in 2025.

You should be the first person to tell Party faithful about how fatal it is, creating divisions in the NPP, towards General Elections. In 2008, NPP lost narrowly due to division and in 2020, it almost lost Parliament also, due to division, when some winnable candidates were rejected for losing ones.

My Vice President, NPP has lessons to learn and it cannot afford to continue with the same old ways that always cost the party dearly, to be glorified and implemented in 2024. NPP has got lessons to learn.

Boko Haram Commander never wanted to marry 21-yr-old victim –Prof Yusuf debunks claim

Boko Haram

The Secretary of the Chief of Defence Staff seven-man negotiating committee, Professor Usman Yusuf, has faulted the claim of the Abuja-Kaduna victims’ negotiator, and publisher of Desert Herald, Tukur Mamu, who once said that the terrorists’ leader wanted to marry the 21-year-old Azurfa Lois John, one of the just freed Abuja-Kaduna victims.

Mamu had on August 20, 2022, alerted Nigerians in a statement that a top commander of bandits who abducted passengers from the Kaduna-Abuja train is reportedly planning to marry one of the victims, 21-year-old Azurfa Lois John.

“This is to alert the federal government and especially the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that I can confirm through credible information at my disposal that if urgent action is not taken to immediately secure the release of the youngest victim of the train attack, a 21-year-old Azurfa Lois John, the abductors as they have done in the case of Leah Sharibu, are planning to marry her any moment from now,” he was quoted to have said.

However, Professor Usman Yusuf who spoke to Voice of America Hausa service, monitored in Kaduna, said the Boko Haram commander has never approached her, adding that even few days before they were released, the Commander reiterated that he had never said that.

According to him, even when the committee talked to her, she said it was not true, adding that the Commander had never approached her.

He pointed out that for six months they were working behind the scenes to ensure that the Abuja train hostages were released without paying a ransom, adding that their committee did not encourage the payment of ransom to the terrorists.

Prof Yusuf noted that the committee did not give a dime to the terrorists to release the 23 hostages.

Lagos court jails Italian for illegal possession of property

Lagos Court

The Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted and sentenced an Italian woman, Floriana De Stefani, to three years imprisonment for laying claim to a property belonging to her landlord, Waterside Properties Limited

Justice Mojisola Dada jailed the foreigner after she found her guilty of one of the six counts brought against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge, in her judgment, held that the convict used forged documents to claim the property where she was a tenant after the death of her husband, Luca Signorelli.

The court specifically found her guilty of using false documents and counterfeit seals to confer ownership of the property on herself.

The EFCC had on March 30, 2019, arraigned the convict alongside a Nigerian Stella Ogboru on five counts but later amended the charge to six counts and drop the name of her co-defendant from the charge.

She was charged with offences bordering on forgery, stealing of property and use of false documents and counterfeit seals.

The foreigner had pleaded not guilty to the charges, which led to her trial.

In his plea for mercy, the defence counsel, Babatunde Ogungbamila, urged the judge to temper justice with mercy, stating that the aged Italian and widow was a first-time offender who was misled by her former lawyer.

My imprisonment for misappropriation of funds politically motivated –Dariye

0
Ex-Plateau State Governor, Senator Joshua Dariye

Ex-Plateau State Governor, Senator Joshua Dariye, has said his conviction on corruption charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was politically motivated.

He stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s Newsnight, a pre-recorded show which airs every Monday.

“My issue was political in the sense that the same charge was taken to Kaduna High Court, Justice Liman dismissed that case,” he said.

“They were not happy, they carried the same document to the Plateau State House of Assembly and the whole amount we are talking about is N1.1 billion.”

During the interview, Dariye gave a breakdown of the amount he was accused of, saying N800 million went into the Plateau State account, N100 million was disbursed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-West, N100m went to the campaign organisation of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo among others.

On the exact money missing, the ex-governor put the figure at just N4 million, describing the sum as the commission on turnover.

According to the former Plateau governor, he would have laundered the money in commission and turnover if he wanted to steal.

He added, “The judge asked if Mr Dariye wanted to convert money into his personal use, will he use his letterhead and write the bank ‘Pls distribute as follows?’”

“I am a chartered accountant and I wouldn’t have been that foolish. If I wanted to steal, I would have lodged the money in Commission and turnover but that never happened.

“But because it was politically motivated, the other vehicle of prosecution – EFCC – became the only veritable tool. I don’t think there was any sense of justice but I leave the rest to God. Time will tell.”

Dariye was convicted of stealing N1.16 billion while serving as Plateau governor from 1999 to 2007 and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. But his term was eventually reduced to 10 years by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, while his conviction was affirmed by the Supreme Court.

He, alongside ex-Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame, was granted a presidential pardon by President Muhammadu Buhari in April.

ASUU holds crucial meeting over Appeal Court ruling

0
ASUU

Following the ruling by the Appeal Court, ordering the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to suspend its 8-month-old strike with immediate effect, the union would be meeting on Sunday (today).

Recall that the Appeal Court on Friday ordered the striking lecturers to obey the earlier judgement by the National Industrial Court which ruled that the union must suspend its prolonged industrial action while negotiations continue.

DAILY POST recalls that ASUU on February 14, this year, shut down public universities across the country while demanding for the full implementation of earlier agreements between it and the Federal Government.

But following fruitless efforts by the government and other stakeholders to reach a truce with the aggrieved lecturers, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government, on September 11, dragged ASUU to the National Industrial Court.

The court, on September 24, ordered the union to return to classroom while negotiation with the Federal Government continues.

But miffed by the ruling, ASUU headed to the appellate court to appeal the ruling.

However, the Appeal Court, while delivering a judgement on Friday, ruled that the union must obey the ruling of the lower court and call off the strike immediately pending the determination of the substantive suit.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, told DAILY POST on Friday while reacting to the ruling that the union would review the Appeal Court’s order before it would decide on the next line of action.

He said, “We have not received the ruling, when we get it, we will review it with our lawyer and then we can take the next step”.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had while reacting to the development on Friday, said labour controllers across the States of the federation are monitoring schools to ensure compliance with the ruling of the Court of Appeal.
