The Winning team, KNUST holding their award

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), last week Thursday, defeated the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to emerge winner in the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC) Grand Finale.

The school rose to the top with a total score of 53.2 in five rounds. Its competitors, UCC, finished second with 47.7, while the UPSA came third with 30.2 points.

The TBSC aims to bring together students in business schools of the tertiary institutions to compete and unearth their business insights and entrepreneurial skills in order to prepare them for socio-economic development.

Another purpose of the initiative is to challenge the youth to go out of their comfort zones and give their best to whatever they pursue.

Last Thursday’s edition was the 4th time the program was being organised, out of which the UCC has emerged winners twice.

The current winner, KNUST, is said to have placed 4th in the first edition, 3rd in the second edition, 2nd in the 3rd edition, and now 1st. It is the first time the UPSA is making its appearance in the finals.

THE COMPETITION

During last Thursday’s competition, KNUST didn’t take the race lightly. This was evidenced in their effort to gain the highest marks in most of the rounds, while their competitors lagged behind.

In the first round which tested the students on basic theories of business, the Kumasi-based tertiary institution won by 25 points, while the UCC and UPSA managed 12 and 3 points respectively.

In the second round, all three universities didn’t perform so well, but the UPSA managed to top the chart with 7 points, while UCC and KNUST gained 6 and 5 points respectively.

The third round, which demanded the students to solve a business problem, saw the UCC top the chart with 7.7 points, while the UPSA and the KNUST garnered 6.5 and 6 respectively.

The 4th round was on the Graphic Business segment and the students answered questions on some stories which appeared in the newspaper. Again, the UCC topped the chart with 19 points, while KNUST managed to pull 10 point and the UPSA 7 points.

In the final round, the students were tested with some riddles. Both KNUST and UPSA got 4 points each, while the UCC couldn’t secure any, which eventually placed them in the second position, while KNUST came first.

AWARDS

The announcement of KNUST emerging winners of the 2022 edition was greeted with applause and cheers from their colleagues, who trooped to the National Theater to support them.

For the awards, the university was given GH¢4,000.00 cash. Each student was also given mobile phones, an insurance package worth GH¢30,000, a certificate, internship opportunities, and a 3-month free subscription of the Graphic App.

The first runner up university also received GH¢6,000.00 cash, with each student receiving a package similar to that of the second runner up and tablets.

The winning school received GH¢10,000.00 cash. Their student on the other hand received laptops and additional packages similar to the first and the second runners up.

Mr. Lord Kelvin Atisu and Madam Vivian Nyantah, competitors from the KNUST team were awarded the best male and female competitors. They received GH¢2,000.00 each. Speaking to this paper, Madam Nyantah expressed her joy at her school winning the award.

She noted that there were challenges with regards to studying materials, coaching and others, but that did not stop her and the rest of team from participating.

She also spoke about the fact that she has been able to win the best female contestant award and encouraged her female counterparts to take part in such activities. The TBSC is an initiative of the Graphic Communication groups with sponsorship from corporate Ghana.

Market women laments over post COVID economic hardship

Officials of BudgIT Ghana and some madina market women

Some women at the Madina market have lamented over the economic hardship as a results of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to them, the impact of COVID-19 had greatly affected their output as customer patronage was lesser as compare to before the pandemic.

Others also bemoaned their inability to pay back loans they took to promote their businesses as the pandemic created financial indiscipline among them.

The pandemic, according to them, went a long way to affect their households, as they struggled to take care of their family.

The market women confirmed this during a Town Hall Meeting, organised by BudgIT Ghana in Madina on Monday.

Background

The BudgIT Ghana Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with Open Society Foundation of West Africa (OSIWA), organised a Town Hall Meeting under the theme, “Pre and Post Covid-19 Pandemic, socio-economic resilience strategies; impact and lessons from stakeholders.”

The Foundation seeks to promote citizen engagements with institutional improvements to facilitate societal change.

Speaking to the media at the meeting last Thursday, the Communication Head of BudgIT Ghana, Jennifer Moffatt, stated that the spread of COVID-19 had multiple effects on people’s lives – loss of life, employment and income, worsening of living conditions and loss of work days and hours.

She continued that as a result the Government of Ghana (GoG) announced a complete shutdown of economic activities in view of the pandemic, in the Greater Accra and Kumasi during the peak period of the COVID-19.

“Governments around the world including the Ghanaian government are playing a crucial role in providing lifelines to people and firms to help combat the pandemic and its economic fallout,” she said.

To support the effectiveness of these efforts, Jennifer Moffat indicated that it is imperative to assess the impacts of COVID-19-induced investment backlog on micro, small and medium scale (MSMS) businesses in Ghana.

The meeting, provided stakeholders the opportunity to share experience about their Resiliency Adaptive Strategies during and post-Covid-19 Economic Recovery.

It also brought together about 30 stakeholders especially market women to share new ideas and challenges to fostering greater post COVID coping mechanisms or strategies and community collaboration across different socio-economic activities.

The meeting also generated a Strategic Business level discussion data on lessons into Future socioeconomic preparedness and Response to strengthen business resilience.

NEQT Group of Companies Ltd Manager allegedly dupes driver

Court

The Manager of NEQT Group of Companies Limited, Eric Nana Kwame Asare, is alleged to have defrauded a driver, Nicholas Dugbatey, off GH¢139,390.00, under the pretext of selling him a tipper truck.

Asare departed with the money somewhere in 2021, by means of false representation that if the said amount was paid to him, he could provide Dugbatey a tipper truck on hire purchase.

The Manager’s failure to honour his side of the purported transaction has ended him before an Accra Circuit Court. Asare pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence, and has been granted bail in the sum GH¢100,000, with two sureties to be justified by the Accra Circuit Court ‘8’, presided over by Adelaide Abui Keddy.

The complainant, Dugbatey, was alleged to have fallen victim to Asare’s grand scheme following a radio advertisement about NEQT Group of Companies Limited, located at Taifa in Accra, that it was offering some vehicles for sale on hire purchase.

The prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Maxwell Ayim, narrated to the court that the complainant, who was in need of a vehicle at that time, followed the address of the said company to its office at Taifa, in Accra, where he met Asare.

He said Asare introduced himself to the complainant as the Manager of the company, and confirmed that it was the company’s advertisement that was ran on the radio. The prosecutor added: “Accused person, therefore, showed pictures of various types of vehicles at his disposal to the complainant and asked him to make his choice.

“The complainant settled on a China tipper truck after going through the pictures, of which [the] accused person quoted an amount of GH¢380,000.00 to him as the cost of the said truck.”

He narrated that the accused requested that the complainant pay an amount of GH¢76,000.00, being 20% of the cost of the vehicle, to which he agreed to pay in installment basis.

The officer added that the accused instructed the complainant to pay the said amount via his mobile money account numbers 0596314098 and 0244106557, to which he agreed, and started making payments.

By September 2021, he said the complainant had paid about 20% of the cost of the vehicle to the accused, and also provided two people as guarantors, per the requirements of the contract. However, when the complainant demanded the release of the vehicle, the accused refused the account on the grounds that the price of the vehicle had gone up.

The accused, therefore, asked the complainant to pay an additional amount of GH¢40,000.00 before the vehicle would be released to him, if he was still interested to acquire it. Although the complainant obliged and paid the said amount, once again, the accused failed to release the vehicle, and further demanded more money from him.

After making all these commitments with the hope to procure the vehicle, and several appeals to be shown where the vehicle was located, the complainant demanded a refund. At the last court sitting, the complainant further disclosed that the accused demanded and collected documents covering his landed property.

The complainant, therefore, after several failed attempts to receive the vehicle or a refund, reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the accused. The accused allegedly admitted in his investigation cautioned statement of having collected an amount of GH¢39,000.00 from the complainant in respect of the said vehicle, but has failed to release it to him.

Meanwhile, police investigations disclosed that the accused had so far collected an amount of GH¢139,390.00 from the complainant in respect of the said tipper truck, but had failed to release it to him as promised.

Further investigations disclosed that the accused had withdrawn the said amount from the mobile money accounts for his personal use. Additionally, investigations also revealed that the complainant, after paying the money to the accused, insisted on several occasions to know the location of the vehicle, but the accused failed to take him there.

During investigations the accused also failed to lead the police to the location of the said vehicle, despite several efforts made by the law enforcement authority.

The prosecutor added that after investigations the accused was charged with the offence and put before court.

Kanye West’s social media accounts blocked

Kanye West

Kanye West has been locked out of his Twitter and Instagram accounts after posting anti-Semitic messages. The star had his Instagram account suspended at the weekend after accusing rapper Diddy of being controlled by Jewish people.

The message played into a long-standing anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

West responded to his suspension by rejoining Twitter and saying he would go “death con 3 On Jewish people”, earning him a second disbarment.

Both platforms removed West’s posts and said the star had violated policies on hate speech.

The incident comes after West drew criticism for wearing a “white lives matter” T-shirt during Paris fashion week.

The slogan also appeared during his YZY fashion show, modelled by Selah Marley, the daughter of Lauryn Hill and granddaughter of Bob Marley.

The Anti-Defamation League has called the phrase “hate speech” and attributed it to white supremacists, who began using it in 2015 in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

West’s stunt immediately drew criticism from his peers.

Among them was Diddy, who posted an Instagram video saying he “did not rock” with the slogan. “All lives matter – but that Black Lives Matter, don’t play with it. Don’t wear the shirt. Don’t buy the shirt. Don’t play with the shirt. It’s not a joke,” he said.

Amerado has revealed how life struggles made him almost ditch his musical career for greener pastures abroad.

Officially known as Derrick Safo Kantanka, Amerado said poverty made him torn between his musical career and relocating to the United Kingdom to start life afresh.

According to the rapper, he had no money to push his music career and wasn’t making money by then when he started his music career. During his struggles, he had an opportunity to travel to the UK for the Ghana Party in a Park event in 2019.

He disclosed that when he arrived in the UK, he was forced to choose between coming back to Ghana and staying back to find a job to cater to his family without a legal documents.

“It got to a time where I didn’t know where my next meal was going to come from but I had a chance to get to the UK in October 2019. I was fortunate enough that my aunt was there. I had to make a decision whether to come back to Ghana and do the music or remain in the UK.”

“It was very tough and that was the lowest point in my life. It was a deciding moment for me because during that period I was totally devastated. I nearly run into depression. What I saw and experienced over there was very bad. I can’t say it all.”

“As a young boy who traveled outside the country for tourism. After the event, my mum thinks because I’ve been able to fly, I have to stay behind and work hard over there. She said I should find a job that will enable me to take care of my sister and her.”

Shatta Wale reveals why he tattooed Medikal’s name on his arm

Shatta Wale displays tattoo of Medial on his arm

In a Facebook live video, Shatta Wale showed one of his tattoos on his arm which had Medikal’s name, ‘MDK.’

According to Shatta Wale who was ranting about the decays in the Ghana music industry, Medikal is the only one who is smart and making moves similar to his. This has courted the admiration of the ‘Dancehall King’ to honour Medikal with a tattoo on his arm.

In his opinion, Medikal has been making money moves and securing ground breaking deals which is putting him in a comfortable place when he retires from music.

It is unclear what exactly Medikal is doing that Shatta Wale is highly impressed with but the two have been doing a lot together lately.

Medikal and Shatta Wale were both in the USA for a joint music tour together after they both served some weeks of sentence behind bars following brandishing of gun and faking of death respectively.

Shatta Wale has mentioned that even though he might be addressing issues in a harsh way, what he is constantly bringing to the attention of the general public are things which will serve his contemporaries and posterity well if he is given a listening ear.

Akufo-Addo pays glowing tribute to Nana Kwame Ampadu

Late Nana Ampadu and President Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo paid a glowing tribute to the legendary highlife musician, Nana Kwame Ampadu.

Speaking at the funeral of the legendary Highlife musician, held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the Musician’s contribution to the music industry and how it impacted his (Akufo-Addo’s) political life.

“Talk of the commencement and growth of highlife music, and one of the people whose names will be on the lips of most Ghanaians is Nana Kwame Ampadu.

“The outpouring of grief by many Ghanaians following the news of his death is in appreciation of the impact his music had on successive generations of Ghana.”

“He was one of Ghana’s musical icons and undoubtedly a legendary highlife artiste whose music transcended our national borders,” he said.

The President spoke of how supportive the late Nana Ampadu was of his vision “for the transformation of Ghana.”

“He assisted me tremendously on the campaign trail in the run-up to the victory of my party, the NPP, and the elections of 2016, for which we remain eternally grateful.”

The President consoled the family and said the late highlife artiste will be “sorely missed by all who had the opportunity of knowing and meeting him”.

Putin is fighting alone

0
Opinion

On September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin unleashed a cri de coeur, a simultaneously blistering and blathering speech. Quoting fascist philosopher Ivan Iyin, Putin cast himself as the hero leading a global fight against the West in general, and American hegemony in particular. But rather than mark the start of a new epochal conflict, the speech instead laid bare the extent to which the Russian president has lost touch with reality.

The declaration was intended to mark a high point in the “success” of his “special operation” against Ukraine, namely the attempted annexation of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions – though Russian forces are not in full control of any of them.

What Putin planned in February as a blitzkrieg has instead come to be mocked as а bly*tkrieg, substituting blitz, the German word for lightning, with a Russian curse word whose translation is not publishable here.

While the horrors of the conflict are no laughing matter, that Putin is blind to the tragicomic reality of the fighting was made clear when Ukrainian forces retook the city of Lyman in Donetsk Oblast within 24 hours of his diatribe. Lyman has been of strategic importance due to its position as a railway juncture, but now it has also taken on a symbolic significance – all thanks to the fact that Putin could no longer keep his anger to himself.

A week later, an explosion struck the Kerch Bridge which Putin had ordered built to link the Russian mainland with the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula. The bridge was arguably the project which the Kremlin had used to propagandise its occupation regime more than any other and which pro-Kremlin media had previously painted as impervious to attack.

Putin has long been critical of the so-called “rules-based order” and US hypocrisy on the use of force abroad. He first brought up these ideas in his 2007 speech at the Munich Security Conference.

Back then, he was still willing to call the US and other Western states “partners” – language he has now explicitly cast aside. His descent into hyperbole continued with two essays, published in 2020 and 2021, reimagining World War II to blame the West for Hitler’s attacks on Eastern Europe while absolving Russia of sin for the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and denouncing Ukrainian nationhood.

How unhinged Putin has become from reality has also been laid bare by one particular point of emphasis in his latest speech, namely: his claim that Russia is leading the charge to resist US hegemony and that the rest of the world is choosing to side with it.

But some of the countries that he perhaps perceives as allies – those that have refused to “bow” to US pressure and made the “reasonable choice to cooperate with Russia” – may not be so eager to align with the Kremlin.

Take Iran, which itself is now facing a wave of anti-government protests. The current hardliners in charge in Tehran have not stopped engaging with the West. In fact, they are negotiating with the US and its Western allies a deal to lift the sanctions that former US President Donald Trump unilaterally – and thus hegemonically – re-imposed on the regime.

Meanwhile China – another power that Putin has sought the support of – is also distancing itself from Russia’s war effort. It has no interest in joining Putin’s attempt to upend the global international financial order, dominated by the US dollar, which suits Beijing just fine. It seeks to ultimately displace the US as the dominant player whereas Putin hopes to collapse the present system entirely.

And though Chinese President Xi Jinping too is a fierce critic of the US’ geopolitical power, Beijing has not only been circumspect in its approach to the conflict in Ukraine but has refused to endorse Putin’s position on annexing Ukrainian territory. While the Kremlin often likes to invoke the US-Chinese disagreement over Taiwan as akin to its invasion of Ukraine, there is little chance that Beijing will do the same, let alone recognise Russian sovereignty over the “annexed” territories.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has his own issues with the West that he blames for the 2016 coup attempt against him, has so far refused to join Western sanctions on Russia. But of late Turkish banks – some of which have been accused of skirting the sanctions on Iran – have begun to think better of skirting US sanctions on Russia.

A day before Putin’s speech, it was reported that Turkish state banks were no longer willing to use Russia’s MIR payment system, an alternative to the Belgium-based SWIFT interbank messaging system from which most of Russia’s largest banks have been barred.

Ankara has rejected Putin’s annexations explicitly as well, labelling it a grave violation of international law. Meral Aksener, leader of Turkey’s opposition IYI party – which is currently polling third – has also ramped up her rhetoric against the Kremlin, lambasting Putin as destabilising the wider region in the aftermath of his speech.

A similar situation is found in India, which has been willing to boost its imports of Russian oil and other commodities in recent months, but has increasingly shown signs that Moscow’s demands it go further in its support are grating. Oil companies and the Indian government have reportedly been reluctant to adopt a rouble trade mechanism for oil imports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made his most significant criticism of the war to date at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan on September 16, stating that “today’s era is not an era of war”.

Putin even stands at risk of losing what had been one of Russia’s closest security allies – Armenia – after the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) refused to support Yerevan following border clashes with Azerbaijan and attacks on its territory. Some senior Armenian officials have even hinted at leaving the bloc altogether.

Earlier, the State’s Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Sankara, in a statement, said his principal will be in Gumel to attend the annual ‘Sallar Gani’ (Maulud celebration).
