Why do females struggle to sustain relevance in Creative Arts? –Lady Scratch

Lady Scratch

“Even in the Artiste of the decade category in Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) in 2019, the competition was between Sarkodie and Samini. Hardly did people push for any woman in that category” Lady Scratch, an Artiste who is now in media wondered why the females struggle to sustain relevance in Creative Arts.

Known officially as Belinda Yaa Kyeiwa Asomani, Lady Scratch is asking scads of questions as to why the industry does not favour the females to live to their highest potential. “Is it that the industry is male biased or there is a way to reward the males than the females in the industry?” Lady Scratch wondered further.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Lady Scratch mentioned that, she is sure if Eno Barony was a male, she would have done better than she is doing now.

Using her days in music and her current work in the media, Lady Scratch added that; “I got a better understanding of the media and how it works when I started working as the Producer of programmes that promote music.

For instance, with ‘Yenko fie’ and ‘Adwuma pa mbre’ on Connect FM where I work, there are conscious efforts to push music of the females.”

“So it will be unfair to say that the media does not support the females but the issue is why are they unable to sustain relevance for long” Lady Scratch quizzed.

She further wondered why “no female Artiste has been able to stay relevant in the industry like Sarkodie?”

“There is an urgent need for the industry to convene on this issue because there will come a time Ghana will struggle to get any female to compete on the international stage.

I think the media, industry players and the females in the industry at large should as a matter of urgency brainstorm on this” Lady Scratch ended.

Creative sector has much to offer if given the needed attention –Ebo Whyte

Ebo Whyte

James Ebo Whyte, popularly known as Uncle Ebo Whyte, a renowned Playwright has asked the government not to abandon the creative industry.

On Joy TV, which was monitored by The Chronicle, he stated that the creative sector has a lot to offer the economy if it is offered the needed support.

In his submissions on the show, he said that should the creative industry be given maximum attention and lift as the other institutions, no sector can compete with it.

“We are not interested in growing anything in this country, but I can tell anyone who cares to listen, that nothing will compare to the creative industry if we are given the right attention. Nothing, no sector, not cocoa, not gold, not oil, nothing,” he said.

Also speaking to the current development of the country, the playwright in comparison said Ghana’s economy is been run like a teenager.

“We are not neat, teenagers will not clean their rooms. We think we know, so we are too known, we are lazy we would rather sleep and have fun than anything else. We do not want to do the work of the mind and that is Ghana for you,” he said.

Uncle Ebo Whyte noted that although the country is past 60 years, its civilization to other countries in comparison, Ghana is still young and needs to double up the pace to build a face-front nation.

This he explains as being evident in the governance of the country.

In a joint press statement posted on social media,Kirani Ayat who has been in the news for some time due to a misunderstanding between himself and the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) admitted to having settled their differences.

”On September 27, 2022, Mr. Ayat Maqwam, aka Kirani Ayat became aware that visual outtakes of his “Guda” video had been used by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) without his consent.

According to GTA, these visuals have been used extensively since 2019 for the production of various contents promoting tourism to the country. We are pleased to announce that the parties have reached an amicable agreement in settlement.

Moving forward, Ayat and GTA will collaborate on a number of projects aimed at showcasing Ghana, our beautiful landscapes, and exciting talents to the world.

Ayat appreciates all support from the good people of Ghana throughout this process. His new project, Aisha’s Sun is available now on all music streaming platforms” the statement said.

This comes after Kirani Ayat called out the Ghana Tourism Authority in a Twitter post for using some visuals of his ‘Guda’ song, in a Tourism promotional video for the president without his consent.

Kirani Ayat who was not pleased to see his work used without his consent noted that he spent money on making the video without aid from anyone and yet he was not compensated after his content was used.

The GTA dismissed claims that some footage used for the new tourism promotional video was pirated.

In a press statement, the Authority stated that they procured the footage Kirani Ayat is claiming ownership of legitimately from a creative agency in 2019 as part of a project.

However, Samsal denied giving the Authority the go-ahead to use a mood board type of visual presentation or ‘collage’ consisting of images, text, and samples of objects in a composition containing Kirani Ayat’s video.

According to the company, the video reel they showed the GTA was only to give them an example of the type of content they intend to produce for the Authority as part of their agreement.

Popular Nigerian Artiste, Davido, and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland have lost their three-year-old son, Ifeanyi.

Reports are that, Davido’s first son drowned in a swimming pool at his residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.

In a bid to revive him, the three-year-old boy, after being pulled out of the swimming pool, was reportedly rushed to a hospital in the Lekki area of the state, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

The victim’s family had yet to react to the tragic development as of the time this report was filed.

However, since the news of Ifeanyi’s rumored death became public knowledge, Nigerians, particularly entertainment lovers, had been outraged and traumatised by the development.

A number of celebrities have posted cryptic messages that appear to confirm the death of Ifeanyi. Some of which are comedians Ayo Makun and LasisiElenu, radio personality Daddy Freeze among others.

The President has Spoken (1)

0
OPINION

On Sunday, October 30, 2022, the president of the republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo spoke to the nation in his latest series of “Fellow Ghanaians.”

Even though I had speculated in Church that day, that he was going to share freebies, which it turned out that he did not, I must say I was not disappointed in his speech. But before I state why, I find it an obligation to respond to the statement below, which appeared in social media, allegedly by NDC’s Ras Mubarak. If he is innocent of this, I humbly apologise, however, since it looks like the handwriting of an NDC guru and activist, I intend to respond.

Ras Mubarak’s statement are in italics, below.

This is what I expected the President to say in his address.

  1. That he is sorry for the pain and difficulties families and businesses are facing in the country.
  2. As part of efforts to restore confidence, he has accepted the resignation of the Minister for Finance.
  3. Name a replacement and encourage parliament to expedite action in passing the new minister
  4. Announce a 50 percent cut in salary of the President, Vice President, Ministers and Chief Executive Officers.
  5. Reduce the size of government by 40 percent
  6. All none-essential public sector workers should work from home to ease the burden of the cost of commuting to work.
  7. Extension of the moratorium on all none-essential foreign travels by ministers, and government appointees.
  8. All Ministers, and appointees who have to travel out of the country should fly economy class
  9. Announce a review of the SHS implementation to cover only wards from low-income families.
  10. Tax on sugar products, as well as imported rice and other consumer goods that are imported. This is to encourage the citizenry to patronize more locally made food items.
  11. Offer incentives to business to stay afloat.
  12. Call a national dialogue/summit on the economy to include Professionals, and persons from different political persuasions among other solutions.

These are practical solutions to a crisis. But alas, they won’t listen to anyone but themselves.

Ras Mubarak.

The NDC is well noted for doing the worse things but would always come out to portray itself as the best and most caring political party, who always does things to benefit Ghanaians. To me Ras’ points, 3,6,7,8 and 12 are very irrelevant and need not to be responded to. My response:

  1. Has the NDC ever apologised to Ghanaians for the hardships it meted on us, even in eras where there were no external economic crunches?
  2. The president said earlier that he would replace the finance minister and the minister of state of finance, after the IMF deal is sealed, the 2023 Budget, read and the Appropriation Bill, passed. So, what else?
  3. How much cut did the Mills/Mahama government implemented on salaries of appointees, during the harsh economic conditions of their regime? When without any external forces, Ghana went deep down and with dumsor which lasted over three years. The NDC has successfully placed, dumsor in the English dictionary. During the first six years of Mills/Mahama regime, Ghana recorded annual single digit inflation only once. But during Nana Addo’s, single digit inflation is recorded four times.

After six years, of Mills/Mahama the average annual inflation rate in Ghana was 13.95%. Under Nana Addo, with the 2022 inflation, projected at 32%, the six-year average will be 13.19%.

  1. During the harsh conditions under Mills/Mahama due to gross mismanagement, over costing of projects e.g., Kwame Nkrumah interchange and Kasoa overpass and looting of state coffers, by government appointees and party activists, led by Woyome, the crook, by what percentage did that government reduce its size?
  2. Accepted. But will this be fair on parents who judiciously pay taxes, while the supposed poor do not pay taxes.
  3. When Hon. Maj. Courage Quarshigah was promoting local rice, did the NDC not use TV3 to bastardise our rice and promote foreign rice? With eight years in office, after the Kufuor administration, what did the NDC do to promote local products?

In 1971, the Busia Administration of the Progress Party UP Tradition, placed a ban on importation of certain items. This led to a boost in Ghana own businesses and industries. The AFRC and PNDC came to collapse all such vibrant businesses. The NDC in 1995 decreed that Ghanaians must not patronise some made in Ghana goods because, the owners of such businesses and industries would use profits they make to sponsor political parties to campaign against him.

  1. Where is the money to do this? When the NPP introduced E-Levy, the NDC polluted the minds of Ghanaians that the 1.5% levy would make them poorer. Meanwhile in the NDC’s 2020 manifesto, it proposed a similar levy if voted into government. Ghanaians are now poorer by not sending money by MoMo but by hand delivery. Example, it will cost GHc3.00 to send GHc200.00 by MoMo (GHc1.50 MoMo charge and GHc1.50 on E-Levy), but the NDC has encouraged Ghanaians to travel and deliver money to the love-ones. Assuming someone, living around Circle in Accra, has to send GHc200.00 to a friend or relative in Ashiaman, the NDC strongly advises, that he spends a total of GHc26.00 on transportation, than spending only GHc3.00 via MoMo. Does this make sense?

Ras’ solutions are hypocritical and impractical.

Doctors sensitise Ebonyi residents to Lassa fever prevention

Map of Ebonyi State

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), on Monday, tasked residents of Ebonyi State on the need to prevent the resurgence of Lassa fever in the state, saying its outbreak was imminent during the dry season.

The humanitarian organisation thus called on communities to take measures aimed at forestalling the outbreak of the virus.

Addressing journalists in Abakaliki on Monday, MSF Project Coordinator, Elton Mbofana, noted that prevention and early detection of Lassa fever were key factors that would ensure that lives were saved.

He said, “By detecting the disease early, and by taking preventive hygiene measures such as ensuring houses are free of rats, many people’s lives can be saved. Early diagnosis and treatment can radically increase people’s chances of survival.

“Lassa fever is a contagious disease spread through contact with infected rats and through uncovered food contaminated with rat faeces or urine. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, general body weakness, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain, chest pain and, in severe cases, unexplained bleeding from the ears, eyes, nose, mouth and other parts of the body.

“The time between infection and the appearance of symptoms ranges from three to 21 days. Lassa fever infects around 300,000 people in West Africa each year and causes around 5,000 deaths, with most cases in Nigeria occurring during the dry season from December to March.

“Healthcare workers are most at risk of catching the disease. The major risk for them is contracting the disease while treating a patient with Lassa fever, due to a lack of personal protective equipment and sub-optimal infection prevention and control measures.

“Healthcare workers must be protected, not only for their own wellbeing, but also to prevent their absence having an impact on the health system.”

In his contribution, MSF project medical referent, Dr. Slaymen Ammar, added, “The cost of treatment needs to be subsidised to ensure that everyone has early access to care.”

The incident occurred at about 11:45 p.m. on Sunday in Okposi, a community in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.
The victim, Joseph Nwanja, was killed near a security checkpoint in the area, it was learnt.

The police in the state have confirmed the killing.
The police spokesperson in the state, Chris Anyanwu, a superintendent of police, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that they were aware of the killing of the operative but were yet to get the details of the incident.
The Ebubeagu Commander in the state, Friday Nnanna, also confirmed the killing of the operative.

“On Sunday, somebody called me that some hoodlums were disturbing people in Ugwulangwu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state. So, I have to call our people in the area because Ugwulangwu is under Ohaozara (Council Area),” he said.

“The body of the victim has been deposited in the mortuary and investigation is ongoing,” Mr Nnanna stated.

Ebubeaguwas set up in 2021 by governors of the five states in the South-east to help in the fight against insecurity in the region, which has witnessed deadly attacks linked to the Biafra agitation by the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The security outfit, which is backed by the Ebonyi State Government, has been accused of human rights abuses.
Members of the group have also been accused of extrajudicial killings across the South-east.

Increased attacks
Ebonyi, like other states in Nigeria’s south-east, has witnessed an increase in deadly attacks lately.

The latest incident occurred less than two weeks after gunmen attacked the convoy of the provost of the newly established Federal College of Education Technical, in Isu, a community in Onicha Local Government Area of the state.
Earlier in October, gunmen killed a Chinese expatriate in Iboko, a community in Izzi Local Government Area of the state.

In April, gunmen attacked some police officers attached to a construction company in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state. One gunman was killed in the attack.

Gunmen, in May, attacked the country home of the Chairperson of Ikwo Local Government Area of the state, Steve Orogwu, killing three of his relatives.
In June, three people were killed by gunmen in Ngbo Community, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

In August, three persons were killed by gunmen who invaded a hotel in Isu, a community in Onicha Local Government Area of the state.

Again, one police officer was killed in August when gunmen attacked a security checkpoint along Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway in Ebonyi State.

Last month, gunmen killed a member of Ebubeagu operatives in MpumaEkwa-Oku, a community in Izzi Local Government Area of the state.
The attacks, mostly targeted at security officials and government facilities, have been attributed to IPOB which is agitating for a sovereign state for the Igbo-speaking people in the South-east.

But the group has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attacks.
