Asawasi bread bakers halt services over high prices of flour, others

Bakers at Asawasi in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region have stopped the production of bread and other flour-based pastries.

The three-day strike is aims at protesting against the high cost of raw materials that are largely imported and used in the production of bread and pastries.

Information available to The Chronicle has it that all bakeries in the Municipality are out of service and bread is nowhere to be bought. Other sister communities such as Fante New-Town are threatening to join the strike.

Speaking to a baker called Afua,she expressed worry about the high prices of raw materials such as sugar,flour, and margarine among others.

Afua told The Chronicle that flour, which used to be sold at GH¢120.00, has increased to GH¢550.00.

“Margarine, which used to be sold at GH¢175.00 now sells at GH¢720.00,you can imagine. How can we survive?” Afua expressed worry.

A bag of sugar was selling at GH¢120 is now going for GH¢720.00,she added.

Speaking to a resident of Asawasi, name withheld, she expressed worry that the break in bread production would affect her family, since her kids use bread to complement their breakfast.

She stated that she may have to buy some from Krofrom or Fante New-Town.
