Spain part ways with Tome after England defeat

Spain sack coach Montse Tome

Spain’s women’s national team have parted ways with head coach Montse Tome and named Sonia Bermudez as her replacement.

The Spanish Football Federation said Tome’s contract will not be renewed when it expires on 31 August.

Tome, 43, became Spain’s first female head coach when she was appointed in September 2023, having acted as Jorge Vilda’s assistant until the 44-year-old was sacked amid the Luis Rubiales scandal.

She led the side to victory in the inaugural Women’s Nations League in February 2024, but Spain finished runners-up in the Euros after a penalty shootout defeat by England on 27 July.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) thanked Tome for “her work, professionalism and dedication” but said she will leave her role on 31 August when her deal expires.

Bermudez won nine league titles during a playing career that took her to Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Levante.

The 40-year-old played 61 times for Spain and had been head coach of the U23s until her promotion to the senior side.

She captained Spain and competed in the 2015 World Cup, when La Roja finished bottom of their group.

Everton agree season-long loan deal for Grealish

Jack Grealish

Everton have agreed a season-long loan deal for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish.

The 29-year-old has fallen out of favour at City and was left out of their squad for the final Premier League game of last season at Fulham as well as the Club World Cup in the United States.

Sources have told BBC Sport that the clubs have reached an agreement over a deal for Grealish, who reportedly earns £300,000 a week, external at City, and a medical is imminent.

The England playmaker joined City from Aston Villa for what was a British record fee of £100m in August 2021 and has made more than 150 appearances, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup.

But he made only seven league starts last season as City ended the season without winning a major trophy.

He was left on the bench by manager Pep Guardiola during the FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace, with Argentine teenager Claudio Echeverri being given a debut instead.

In June it was understood Grealish wanted a clean break and a permanent new home, but he now seems poised for a loan move.

He would have preferred to join a team in the Champions League, but no offer has yet been made by the likes of Newcastle United or Tottenham Hotspur.

A move to Everton does not present the opportunity of playing European football but it will give him the chance to rejuvenate his career and take centre stage at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Grealish will also be aiming to win his place back in the England squad after saying last summer he was “heartbroken” by being left out of the Three Lions squad for the 2024 European Championship.

Palace lose appeal against demotion from Europa League

Crystal Palace players

Crystal Palace have lost their appeal against being demoted from the Europa League and will play in the Conference League this season.

The ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) also means Nottingham Forest’s spot in the Europa League is confirmed, having been promoted in Palace’s place.

The news comes just a day after Palace beat Liverpool on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley.

The Eagles qualified for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup last season but were punished by Uefa for breaching multi-club ownership rules.

American businessman John Textor owned a 43% stake in the club until he sold it in June and is the majority owner of Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League.

Palace had until 1 March 2025 to show Uefa proof of multi-club ownership restructuring, but the club missed that deadline.

In July, Palace submitted an appeal to Cas against Uefa – which issued the punishment – as well as Lyon and Nottingham Forest.

In the ruling, Cas said:

  • Regulations are clear and do not provide flexibility to clubs that are non-compliant on the assessment date, as Palace claimed.
  • Textor still had decisive influence over both clubs at the time of Uefa’s assessment date.
  • The panel also dismissed Palace’s argument that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and Lyon.

Uefa rules state clubs owned, to a certain threshold of influence, by the same person or entity cannot compete in the same European tournament.

Palace argued Textor does not hold any decisive influence at the club, but Uefa did not accept the Premier League side’s defence.

Palace will face either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Midtjylland of Denmark in the Conference League play-off round later this month.

Man City weigh-up move for Real Madrid star, consider fresh £27m offer for James McAtee

0
Real Madrid’s Rodrygo

Manchester City are considering a move for Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

The club are weighing-up James McAtee’s sale on top of allowing Jack Grealish to join Everton and Tottenham looking to buy Savinho.

That would leave Pep Guardiola‘s side room to move for an attacking replacement and the 24-year-old Brazilian would be an option.

Arsenal and Liverpool have previously held an interest in Rodrygo and he appears likely to leave the Bernabeu this summer having hardly played for new boss Xabi Alonso at the Club World Cup.

Meanwhile, Forest are continuing negotiations for midfielder McAtee and have improved their bid to around £27million inclusive of add-ons for the England U21 international though that has still to be accepted.

Forest, however, are understood to have personal terms in place with the 22-year old.

A number of clubs including Bundesliga sides remain attentive to McAtee’s situation but Forest are hopeful of finding agreement.

Daily Mail Sport reported this weekend that Forest have also offered £11m plus add-ons for Monaco defender Soungoutou Magassa.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are also among those interested in Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas after making enquiries earlier this window.

A Word To John Is Not At Bole, But Adansi Sikaman & Manso Watreso

Kwabena Osei Esq - The writer

l am no Soothsayer, Seer, Angel, Prophet, ‘Man’ of God nor has ever practiced sorcery, but it seems to me the gods of the land/rivers are determined to attach their curses to, and on all Government’s inactions.

Following and flowing from the tragic helicopter crash, which claimed 8 lives (Note –  l have not mentioned the Obogu 16 who perished needlessly in the Juaso enclave or the Manso Watreso 3), will JOHN JUMP THIS TIME ROUND, AND SHOULD HE?, HAS HE BEEN PUSHED?, aka, Onipa dasani te ne ho ase a, ɔmpɛ

l am told by those who have sighted the flyer of/for the event, which was to have taken place at Obuasi on that fateful Wednesday for which the late five State officials were being ferried to by a crew of three, now late, that nowhere in the flyer were the words, sentences and paragraphs below referred and or alluded to

– Declaring a state of emergency at affected and infested galamsey sites

– REPEAL of LI 2462

Fellow Ghanaians, it might interest you to learn and know that it was rather a program to “embellish” galamsey under the guise of Responsible Cooperative Mining & Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), whatever that means or meant, somewhat of a replica of the erstwhile Government (NPP) Community Mining, which not only exacerbated all the ills associated with illegal mining, but cost them dearly politically, oh yes, they lost abysmally largely due to their failure to declare a state of emergency to curb the galamsey menace and or tackle the menace head-on.

Oh, what a costly price we have had to pay as a Nation by using lip service to fight a national service, sorry ooooo, to fight a national canker, aka, “Ano a, y’ɛde gye bosea no, ɛnnyɛ ɛno na y’ɛde tua”.

Bet me, if the Government meant to fight galamsey per its commitments and pronouncements in opposition and not play with words and dance around it with all its associated gimmicks, l am of the considered opinion that this unimaginable catastrophe, which all and sundry are mourning would not have occasioned in the first instance to merit appropriation of blame left and right.  Indeed, we have bought and brought this to ourselves, aka, MEN ARE SOMETIMES, MASTERS OF THEIR FATE.

I have heard a lot of theories from some of your trusted appointees, notably amongst them are the late Minister for the Environment and whatever. He seems to say you are briefed every morning on the state of illegal mining and that you are strategizing to know when and how to declare a state of emergency at the affected and infested areas.

YENTE GYAE OKADA

As Ghanaians were counting their loss, 16 (Atwedie), plus 8 (Adansi Sikaman), came yet, the tragedy at Manso Watreso, coincidentally also in Ashanti region, where three persons where burnt in a motorbike collision with others sustaining various and varied degrees of burns and injuries. Axiomatically, the above scenario had everything to do with galamsey, yah, had and was spiced with galamsey flavour – ferrying petrol to galamsey site.

Ironically, not a single week, sorry, day, passes without news of incidents/accidents involving Okada, a generic accolade for illegal commercialization of the operations of motorcycles, aboboyaa, pragya and related allies.

Yet, in spite of these frightening and mind blogging statistics on Okada fatalities, the Transport Minister and his cohorts are working tirelessly around the clock to obliterate Regulations 84 & 128 of Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, LI 2180, from our statutory books on the altar of campaign promises.

The above provisions are emphatic on COMPULSORY WEARING OF PROTECTIVE CLOTHING IN RESPECT OF MOTOR CYCLES (84) & PROHIBITION OF USE OF MOTOR CYCLE OR TRICYCLE FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSE (128).

As the Akans posit, “Akura se maka, nanso menwee yɛ”, to wit, it’s only a fool who does not change his/her mind.

The State must bury its pride, do extensive consultations with all stakeholders including the opposition NPP and explain to the citizenry why the commercialization of Okada “shall” and must be shelved, no politicization for our collective good. This is purely a matter of life and limbs, nothing more.

May we use this grieving period to call for action to end this existential threat.

Said Absolutely Nothing.

Help us to overcome the devouring galamsey beast

Eight Valliant men who set out in the protective womb of the morning

Have ended up as haunting ghosts in the tombs of national mourning

Let their charred and dismembered bodies steer the mirrors of our conscience into a sacred vow against galamsey NOW

We should NOT let their gory deaths be in vain

Just singing their glory

to assuage our collective guilt

shall NOT suffice

Let us memorialize them not just in the conscience of a passing passionate season

Or In a cyclical war against terrorising galamsey- greed

That only yields weeds for wreaths (selah)

Let us understand the need to eradicate galamsey treason with seasoned reasons

The all and sundry galamsey-greed

causing immeasurable grief as a creed

must STOP

The gallant eight, in the helicopter crash

are not our only galamsey deaths

The international networks with collusive depth must be disarmed

The illicit galamsey enchantment must end

Our food chain is a hideous death trap

Our rivers are unrecognisable on the map

The land that sustains us is besieged

in an inhumane corruption sacrilege

called intractable galamsey

Ilicit gold has become a sorrow to the soul

When shall we say ENOUGH

Let this national calamity reach

the crevices of our Minds and Hearts

Let it teach us to finally Retreat

Let us say A resounding No

NOW

Let our immense shame activate us

Arise Ghana

Let us put a stop to entrenched Galamsey

Let us have honor Restored

Died hideous deaths

Trying to fight the dirt

Walking for just 15 minutes a day can help reduce symptoms of debilitating illness

0
Walking for just 15 minutes a day

Scientists have pinpointed the exact amount of time someone needs to spend outdoors to slash the risk of depression.

Experts found that spending just 15 minutes a day in nature was linked to better mental health, reducing levels of anxiety, depression and fatigue in research that examined nearly 450 separate studies.

However, intriguingly, the much-touted goal of exercising outdoors might be redundant, at least when it comes to boosting mental health, according to the analysis.

For the review headed by experts at Stanford University found that simply relaxing outside for 15 minutes was more effective in boosting mood than active time in nature.

Lead author Professor Yingjie Li said: ‘Our findings confirm that even brief nature exposure yields substantial mental health benefits, supporting evidence that momentary interactions can reduce anxiety, improve mood and boost cognitive function.’

The researchers found that being outside for over 45 minutes a day provided even greater reductions in stress and boosts in vitality.

Scientific studies have long found spending time in the countryside has a positive impact on a broad range of mental health conditions and some studies even claim it can boost heart health.

But, in the first study of its kind to distinguish the effect of different types of nature, the researchers suggested that even small city parks and forests could significantly reduce depression and anxiety.

They found that young adults experienced even greater benefits than the general population—which they highlighted as an important finding given that most mental health disorders develop before the age of 25.

Latest figures show that the number of people seeking help for mental illness has surged by two fifths since before the pandemic, reaching almost 4 million.

Experts estimate that at least one in six adults will experience depression at some point in their lifetime.

Whilst symptoms can vary widely, according to the NHS continuous low mood, low self-esteem and no longer getting enjoyment out of life could all be signs of depression.

Some sufferers may also experience debilitating anxiety and suicidal ideations.

Physical symptoms include changes in appetite, constipation, lack of energy, low sex drive and disturbed sleep.

Meanwhile, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show almost a quarter of children in England now have a probable mental disorder.

According to the current study, the number of people living in cities is expected to rise to 70 per cent by 2050, making mental health a global concern as researchers urge policy makers to implement more green spaces going forward.

The researchers concluded that even creating smaller ‘pocket parks’ and planting more trees along street could be a good starting point in battling the ongoing mental health crisis.

They said: ‘ Our findings show that integrating brief nature exposure into daily routines can be an effective intervention.’

Officials believe that the rise in anxiety and depression could be being driven by a greater awareness of mental health problems as well as the cost of living crisis which sees many youngsters struggling to get jobs.

The number of 18 to 24-year-olds who are ‘economically inactive’ due to health issues has more than doubled in the past decade.

Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe dies two months after being shot

Miguel Uribe has died of injuries he sustained during a shooting on 7 June

Colombian senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe has died two months after being shot in the head in a targeted attack which shocked the South American nation.

The 39-year-old was hit by three bullets – two of them in the head and one in the leg – at a campaign rally on 7 June in the capital, Bogotá.

His wife confirmed his death on social media, paying tribute to “the love of my life”.

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out the shooting, but the motive behind the attack is still unclear.

Uribe’s wife, María Claudia Tarazona, thanked her late husband for “a life full of love” and for being “the best father” for their children.

According to a statement published on Saturday by the hospital where Uribe was being treated, the senator had suffered a bleed to his central nervous system and was due to undergo surgery.

He had already had several surgeries since he was first taken to the Santa Fe clinic in June.

His wife had asked people to pray for his recovery and thousands had turned out at vigils and rallies to show their support.

Uribe, who had been a senator since 2022, had been seeking his party’s nomination for the 2026 presidential election.

He was popular in the polls and recognised as an up-and-coming figure in the right-wing Democratic Centre party, known for his outspoken criticism of the current left-wing president, Gustavo Petro.

President Petro’s office released a statement expressing its condolences to the family of the slain politician.

Funerals held for Al Jazeera journalists assassinated by Israel in Gaza

Mourners carry one of the bodies of the Al Jazeera staff who were killed in an overnight Israeli strike

Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza City have attended the funeral of five Al Jazeera staff, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif, killed in an Israeli air strike outside al-Shifa Hospital.

On Monday, large crowds joined the funeral procession, carrying the journalists’ bodies from al-Shifa Hospital to Sheikh Radwan Cemetery in central Gaza.

Colleagues, friends, and relatives embraced in grief, while a man lifted a “press” flak jacket high above the crowd.

The strike late on Sunday killed seven people, including correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal. Freelance reporter Mohammed al-Khaldi was also among the dead. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said three more journalists were wounded.

Footage verified by Al Jazeera showed mourners chanting against the killings, with some pledging, “With our soul and blood, we sacrifice for you, Anas,” in reference to the slain journalist.

Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the “targeted assassination” by Israeli forces, accusing the military of deliberately striking the journalists’ position. “The Israeli military admitted to their crimes,” the network said, describing the attack as “another blatant and premeditated assault on press freedom”.

Al-Sharif was “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists”, said Al Jazeera, adding that the attack was “a desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza”.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said it was “appalled” by the killings. “Israel’s pattern of labeling journalists as militants without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom,” said CPJ’s regional director, Sara Qudah.

EU holds talks amid fear that Trump-Putin meeting will sideline Ukraine

European Union has insisted that Kyiv and European powers should be part of any deal to end the war

European foreign ministers are holding emergency talks to discuss their next steps before a meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, as Europe fears Ukraine will be excluded and forced into unacceptable territorial compromises to end the Russia-Ukraine war, now in its fourth year.

In a pre-US-Russia summit push aimed at consensus, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz invited Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the NATO secretary general and several European leaders to a virtual meeting on Wednesday.

The European Union’s top diplomats held a meeting by video link on Monday with their Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha.

“The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine,” leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Britain and Finland, and EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said in a joint statement ahead of the call.

Zelenskyy said on Monday that concessions to Moscow would not persuade it to stop fighting and that there was a need to ramp up pressure on the Kremlin. “Concessions do not persuade a killer,” he said.

Zelenskyy insists he will never consent to any Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory nor give up his country’s bid for NATO membership. European leaders have also underscored their commitment to the idea that international borders cannot be changed by force.

The EU has insisted that Kyiv and European powers should be part of any deal. The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said “the US has the power to force Russia to negotiate seriously”, but “any deal between the US and Russia must have Ukraine and the EU included, for it is a matter of Ukraine’s and the whole of Europe’s security.”
