Medeama and Kotoko players fight for the ball

Medeama SC delivered a commanding statement in the title race with a resounding 4–0 victory over fierce rivals Asante Kotoko, powered by a scintillating brace from Salim Adams at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium on Sunday.

The Mauve and Yellow were relentless from the outset, showcasing both attacking
precision and defensive solidity in a performance that underlined their title credentials in the Ghana Premier League.

Medeama took an early lead in the 14th minute when Manuel Mantey’s effort took a decisive deflection off Henry Ansu, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and setting the tone for the afternoon. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 29th minute, with Kelvin Obeng rising highest to power home a header, leaving Kotoko struggling to contain the waves of pressure.

Just before halftime, Adams opened his account, calmly finishing from close range to
give Medeama a commanding 3–0 lead at the break. Any hopes of a Kotoko response were swiftly extinguished early in the second half, as Adams struck again five minutes after the restart, sealing his brace and capping off a dominant display that earned him Man of the Match honors.

The emphatic victory propels Medeama back to the summit of the league standings, two points clear of defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars, with just five matches remaining.
As the season hurtles toward its climax, the title race is finely poised and promises a dramatic finish. Medeama’s latest performance not only strengthens their grip at the top
but also sends a clear warning to their closest challengers: the race for the crown will go right down to the wire.

“Before leaving Abuja, I reached out to security authorities, and I was assured that additional troops are being deployed to the affected areas. The Niger State Government has also taken swift action to contain the situation,” he said.

Dr. Dre joins Jay-Z as second hip-hop billionaire on Forbes’ list

Dr. Dre

Music mogul Dr. Dre rapped about “no more livin’ hard” more than two decades ago on the 2001 track “Still D.R.E.” Now, he has leveled up to billionaire status.

The Compton, California-born hip-hop musician and producer who popularized a funkier genre of gangsta rap has joined Forbes’ Billionaires list, the media outlet says.

A profile of Dr. Dre, 61, born Andre Young, is Forbes’ April/May cover story – you can also read the story on Forbes.com – and you can find him on the Forbes Billionaires list sandwiched between technologist Vladimir Ivanov and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

He also joins other musicians Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift and Jay-Z on Forbes’ World Celebrity Billionaires list.

Dre tells Forbes he continues to work on music, including early 400 unreleased tracks created during the pandemic.

“Who knows if something is gonna happen to make me come up with the best thing I’ve ever done in my life?” he tells Forbes.

“The exciting part is there’s the potential of that. It’s exciting and depressing at the same time because I know it’s there, and what if I don’t find it?”

Dre’s production beyond music helped push him towards billionaire status. He and record label chairman Jimmy Iovine founded Beats Electronics in 2008 and made $300 high-end headphones a status symbol. Six years later, they sold Beats to Apple for $3 billion.

Since then, Dre has teamed with Snoop Dogg (Iovine is an investor, too) on Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop ready-to-drink cocktails and Still G.I.N. By Dre and Snoop, an ultra-premium gin, both of which came to market in 2024.

“I don’t chase money – I try to make the money chase me,” Dre told Forbes, who also ranked Dre as No. 20 on its list of the Greatest Self-Made Americans.

US and Iran fail to reach a deal after marathon talks in Pakistan

US Vice President boards Air Force Two after talks with reps from Pakistan and Iran

The United States and Iran have failed to reach a deal after high-stakes talks in the Pakistani capital with US Vice President JD Vance saying Tehran has refused to accept Washington’s terms after 21 hours of negotiations in Islamabad.

“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America,” Vance, the head of the US delegation, told reporters on Sunday, shortly before he left Islamabad after the highest-level meeting between Washington and Tehran since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

He said Iran chose “not to accept our terms” at the talks, which began on Saturday, adding that the US needs to see a “fundamental commitment” from Tehran not to develop nuclear weapons.

“We need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance said during a ceasefire in the six-week US-Israeli war on Iran.

Al Jazeera’s John Hendren, reporting from Washington, DC, said the fact that President Donald Trump sent Vance showed the US was taking these talks seriously.

“The fact that Vance left doesn’t necessarily mean that the talks are over,” he said, adding that the main sticking points seem to be the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran continues to essentially control, and the gaps in the nuclear issue.

“The US has been negotiating with Iran over time. Those talks can continue remotely, and leaving those talks may simply be a hard stance,” the Al Jazeera correspondent said.

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday that no one had expected the talks with the US to reach an agreement in one day.

At least 30 feared dead in crush at Haitian tourist site

The incident took place at a historic fortress in the country's north

At least 30 people are feared to have been killed in a stampede at a popular tourist site in Haiti on Saturday.

The incident took place on Saturday during an annual Easter gathering at the Laferrière Citadel, a Unesco World Heritage site, Jean Henri Petit, head of civil protection for Haiti’s Nord department, said, warning the death toll could yet rise.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé said the incident occurred “during a tourist event attended by many young people” at the site, in the northern town of Milot.

He said an investigation had been launched and “all relevant authorities” mobilised to support those affected.

The site had been packed with students and visitors after the event – commemorating the 19th Century fortress’s founding – was advertised on social media, local media report, citing officials.

The stampede was said to have started near the entrance to the site and was exacerbated by the onset of heavy rain.

Haiti’s Le Nouvelliste newspaper first reported the death toll, citing Petit. The government statement did not say how many had died.

Citadelle Laferrière, also known as Citadelle Henry, was built by revolutionary Henri Christophe shortly after Haiti gained independence from France.

The stronghold took more than a decade to construct and was a crucial part of a network of fortifications to protect the new Caribbean island nation against attacks. The site has since become a symbol of Haitian independence.

The deadly stampede comes as Haiti grapples with widespread gang violence that has led to thousands being killed.

Germany’s far-right AfD adopts ‘radical’ manifesto ahead of key polls

Ulrich Siegmund, AfD's top candidate

The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is riding high in the opinion polls in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt and could win an outright majority in regional elections there in September.

It would be the first time a far-right party has held power in a German state since World War Two.

This weekend the AfD officially adopted what has been described as a “radical” and pro-ethnic German government programme for Saxony-Anhalt at a party conference in the central city of Magdeburg.

The AfD’s leading candidate in the state, Ulrich Siegmund, a TikTok star who was given a standing ovation by the delegates, said it was an historic moment, not just for Saxony-Anhalt.

“The whole of Germany is watching this historic election,” he told the conference.

“Parts of Europe are watching this historic election. Parts of the world are watching this historic election, because from here, finally, the political turnaround can also happen here in Germany.”

He said his party had the courage to speak out about what was going wrong in Germany, “that we don’t feel safe anymore, that we scarcely feel at home anymore, that we don’t recognise our homeland anymore”.

“Let’s take back our country,” he added.

The programme, which is more than 150 pages long, contains wide-ranging plans to overhaul Saxony-Anhalt, clamping down on immigrants and supporting large families of German origin.

It also wants to improve relations with Russia, directly contradicting the policies of the federal coalition government, which is a key supporter of Ukraine.

Benin holds presidential election amid deteriorating security situation

A man votes during the presidential election at a polling station in Cotonou, Benin

Voting is under way in Benin’s presidential election with long-serving Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni expected to win in the absence of a major challenger.

Polls opened at 7am (06:00 GMT) on Sunday and will close at 4pm (15:00 GMT). More than 7.9 million people are registered to vote, including 62,000 in the diaspora.

Backed by the two main parties in the governing coalition and the outgoing president, Patrice Talon, Wadagni, a 49-year-old former Deloitte executive, is being challenged by Paul Hounkpe, an opposition figure and former culture minister whose campaign has been low-key.

The member of the Cowry Forces for an Emerging Benin party got on the ballot with help from lawmakers of the two main ruling coalition parties after they refused to endorse the candidacy of Rene Agbodjo, head of the opposition Democrats party.

Talon, 67, is barred from running again after two terms in office and is expected to step down with a legacy of mixed results: economic growth, which reached 7 percent last year, but also a clampdown on the opposition and his critics. In December, a group of military officers also tried and failed to overthrow Talon’s government.

The new president will have to address major challenges, including a huge gap between the poor and well-off. The poverty rate is estimated at more than 30 percent, and many Beninese complain that the benefits of the economic growth over the past decade have not trickled down to them.
