Feature: In search of vaccine for toxic marriages

Feature

Bad news has almost become a regular feature of Nigeria’s daily narrative and recently, it’s been like a flood of it (pun intended).

But the news of the ordeal of two-month-old Miracle Chikwe at the hands of his father in Owerri, Imo State, takes the flood of bad news to the realm of an epidemic. We need to find a moral vaccine — and urgently too.

According to press reports, the 31-year-old father, Confidence Amatobi, had beaten the baby with a plastic hanger in the middle of the night for disturbing his sleep. His wife had briefly left the room to ease herself, and the baby’s cry irritated him. In order to shut him up, he lashed at the little baby so hard and furiously that his hand broke.

He didn’t stop there.

When his wife confronted him, he locked mother and child in a room after seizing her phone, to prevent her from calling for help.

And so, for two days, little Miracle was left in indescribable pain, shut in with his mother, while the broken hand rotted away.

It was only after she managed to escape from the room (the reports didn’t say how) that she could take Miracle to seek help.

She has also narrated how hospitals in the community refused to treat the baby before she eventually got to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, where the amputation was done.

And so, little Miracle is now an amputee, with his right hand gone, and his father is still on the run.

It’s improbable that the man’s cruelty to the baby and his conversion of a room in the house to temporary prison, was the first time he would be showing such brutality at home, especially towards his wife.

When a popular Gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, died in April from alleged consistent battering by her husband, many of us were heartbroken, literally.

It was such a needless death. Osinachi’s unique delivery of gospel songs over the years had endeared her to many that she only needed to cry out and help would reach her.

She was loved and adored.

But public love and acceptance weren’t the only viable currencies readily at her disposal.

She was also a business success. Reports had it that Osinachi was the more financially strong party in the marriage, while Peter, the husband, was freeloading off her talent and hard work.

Yet, she was unable to leave him, until she ended in a body bag.

But who would have thought that after the tears, the countless analyses, speeches and all that went down after Osinachi’s death, that we would be mourning yet another so soon?

But here we are, barely six months later, in lamentation over yet another woman whose life is broken because she lacked the will to leave a marriage that had long stopped serving her, her children or even anyone else except the brute of a man?

And if you thought Osinachi story was heart-wrenching, then Bimbo’s death would literally grind the pieces of that already badly broken heart into fine dust.

Abimbola Ogbonna, nee Martins, who died on October 15, was only 34 when death came calling in such a gruesome manner. Reports had it that the larger part of her teenage and adult years were spent in a horribly toxic marriage.

All came to a head on October 15 when she succumbed to the burn injuries sustained after she, her husband or both of them had set their home on fire, depending on which account you’ve heard.

The truth, of course, remains that no matter the version – and there are quite a number of them – of this couple’s story you read, there was very little comfort about their marriage. From the beginning, it was a roller coaster of violence.

And though family and friends have said they did all they could to pull her out, Bimbo appeared to have taken the “till death do us part” of the marriage vow only too literally.

For example, he was said to have beaten her into a coma in early 2019, while she was eight months pregnant. She regained consciousness sometime in May that year and still stayed in the marriage. There are also reports of him threatening her with a gun in front of their children at home on several occasions but she was not outraged enough to take a walk.

She simply refused to budge.

And now, everyone is talking about her in the past tense. Her husband, Ikechukwu Darry Ogbonna, also known as IVD, though has been arrested, is still alive to tell his own side of the story, true or contrived.

And just like Osinachi who left four young children who would never see their mother again, Bimbo has also left behind five children, with the youngest barely out of her diapers.

Unfortunately, in less than six months from now, there will probably be yet another woman who has taken the ‘till death do us part’ part of the marriage vow too literally. Then the cries, condemnations, protests, and possibly an arrest would happen, and then we rinse and repeat.

The facts remain that it doesn’t matter what anyone says, the average Nigerian woman has shown that she would rather be dead than labelled separated or divorced.

Even for a country notorious for her lack of regard for data, available statistics have shown that Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a major concern in Nigeria. Whether physical, emotional or sexual violence, women are mostly usually at the receiving end.

An article published in 2018, in the BMC Women’s Health, cited a study conducted in 2013 among 20,802 women aged 15–49 years, which established that almost one in every four Nigerian women in that age bracket has experienced one form of IPV.

We also know that with better access to data, this figure would just be scratching the surface.

And while many are quick to point out financial dependency as a reason, and for good reasons too, we also know that the Nigerian woman’s reluctance to quit abusive unions surely goes beyond lack of financial freedom.

Osinachi Nwachukwu made more money than her husband, but that didn’t stop her from absorbing every blow he landed on her, while wearing the virtuous wife toga.

It also goes beyond not having formal education. Just two years ago, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State had played the peacemaker between a medical doctor, Ifeyinwa Angbo, and her husband, Pius Angbo, whom she accused of turning her into a punching bag.

Diligence in pre-nuptial background checks, which used to be undertaken by families (and which ought to be easier now with better access to data), is failing. Even the law doesn’t seem to be enough to save our women and children from these unions.

The Violence Against Persons Prohibition’s Act (VAPP), which was passed in 2015, offers protection against different forms of IPV. Lagos even has the Protection Against Domestic Violence Law (PADVL) operative in the state.

So, what then is enough? Well look in the nearest mirror and ask yourself how you have made every single woman of marriageable age feel less than her married counterpart.

Look again and remember the many assumptions that have coloured your disposition towards any woman who has left her marriage.

Whether we realise or not, every time we make any woman feel inadequate or even worthless, despite everything she could be, just because she never married or had left a marriage, you’re just telling women and girls to place marriage above their self-dignity, personal safety and even their lives. Even worse, you are also inciting unconscientious men to take liberties.

The result as we all can see are avoidable deaths, children whose lives would never remain the same, and sometimes, a two-month-old baby who is now forced to live out the rest of his life without a right arm.

Victor Osimhen scores for Napoli

Serie A leaders Napoli won again. Napoli fought back after falling behind to beat Atalanta.

Former Everton winger Ademola Lookman put Atalanta ahead with a penalty after a handball by Victor Osimhen. Napoli’s Nigeria striker made amends when he headed the equaliser before Elif Elmas’ finish won the game.

Napoli, who have not won Serie A since 1989-90, have won nine league games in a row to move on to 35 points from 13 games.

AC Milan, who are second, are on 29 points and third-placed Atalanta have 27 from 13 games. Maldini, 21, is on loan at Spezia from AC Milan and equalised after Theo Hernandez had given the hosts the lead.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud hit an 89th-minute volley as Milan won 2-1 in the San Siro to remain six points behind Napoli.

Giroud was sent off for a second yellow card for his celebration after scoring.

Bayern Munich beat Hertha Berlin

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting continued his sensational scoring form with a double as Bayern Munich beat Hertha Berlin to go top of the Bundesliga table.

Teenager Jamal Musiala scored Bayern’s opener from a Sadio Mane pass.

Choupo-Moting scored twice in 79 seconds by pouncing on loose balls in the box, taking him on to nine goals in his last seven games for Bayern.

Dodi Lukebakio scored a volley and Davie Selke netted a penalty to give Hertha hope late in the first half.

In potentially a huge blow to Canada before their first World Cup since 1986, Bayern left-back Alphonso Davies went off with a hamstring injury in the second half.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund beat Bochum 3-0 to go third, Eintracht Frankfurt, in fifth, beat Augsburg 2-1 and sixth-placed Leipzig saw off Hoffenheim 3-1.

Unai Emery in dream debut as Aston Villa beat Man United

Aston Villa score against De Gea

Unai Emery enjoyed a dream debut as Aston Villa manager with an impressive and deserved victory against Manchester United at Villa Park. The hosts were 2-0 up after 11 minutes.

Leon Bailey opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Things got even better for Villa just three minutes later when Lucas Digne curled in a brilliant free-kick from 25 yards.

Cristiano Ronaldo, named captain for the first time under Erik ten Hag, drew another good save out of Martinez moments later with a header as the away side improved before half-time.

A huge slice of fortune got them a goal back seconds before the break when Luke Shaw’s shot took a big deflection off Jacob Ramsey to land in the back of the net.

But Ramsey delivered the perfect response to that setback after the break when he latched onto Ollie Watkins’ ball and powered a shot beyond De Gea.

Haaland scores late winner to give 10-man City victory over Fulham

Haaland scores late winner

Substitute Erling Haaland scored an injury-time winner from the penalty spot to give 10-man Manchester City victory over Fulham and send the defending champions top of the table.

The importance of his 95th-minute strike was underlined moments later when Haaland was embraced by his manager Pep Guardiola at the final whistle, and joined his team-mates on a lap of honour.

All seemed to be going according to plan for Guardiola’s side early on, as they took the lead through Julian Alvarez’s powerful finish.

The game took an unexpected turn just before the half-hour mark when Joao Cancelo muscled Fulham forward Harry Wilson off the ball in the box.

Referee Darren England pointed to the spot and showed Cancelo the red card, before Andreas Pereira sent Ederson the wrong way from the spot.

Haaland came off the bench in the second half and thought he had scored the winner when he headed home a Kevin de Bruyne cross with 15 minutes to go, but VAR showed he was offside.

City’s attacks grew increasingly frantic towards the end till Haaland scored from the spot.

Arsenal stay top with victory away to Chelsea

Gabriel scores from close-range

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table as Gabriel’s close-range finish gave them victory away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Gabriel pounced to steer the ball over the line in the 63rd minute, after the hosts failed to deal with Bukayo Sako’s corner from the right wing, to give the Gunners a deserved lead.

They had created the best chances when it was goalless but Gabriel Martinelli curled a shot over the crossbar and Gabriel Jesus failed to hit the target with a diving header when unmarked.

Chelsea, with ex-Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failing to make an impact against his former side, struggled to create clear-cut chances and are now without a win in four Premier League matches.

Arsenal lost top spot on Saturday when 10-man Manchester City beat Fulham 2-1 thanks to Erling Haaland’s winning penalty in the fifth minute of injury time, but this win takes them two points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side after 13 matches.

For Arsenal, this was a chance to show their title credentials as they look to become English champions for the 14th time – but the first since 2003-04 when their ‘Invincibles’ went through an entire league campaign without losing.

GHS Recalls ‘Mad’ Doctor … but refuses to pay him compensation after six years of mental torture

0
The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye
Dr Francis Ibrahim-Betonsi

For six years, he was harassed and subjected to extreme humiliation, put through clinical examination under duress, on claims that he had a psychiatric condition.

Eventually and unjustly, he was dismissed from the Ghana Health Service in 2012.

The woes of Dr Francis Ibrahim-Betonsi, a medical officer, started at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region, when he was serving as a Senior House Officer.

He recounted that on June 2, 2009 while on duty at the Diabetic Clinic/OPD of the hospital, he had a misunderstanding with a female nurse who assaulted him, inflicting injuries on his chest through biting.

He then reported the matter to the Medical Director of the hospital, where a disciplinary committee was established to look into the matter. To his surprise, management of the hospital directed him to undertake a psychiatric examination.

On June 4, 2009, he again reported the same nurse to the Medical Director of the facility, Dr. Paul Kwaw Ntodi, for her unlawful engagements in consulting and prescribing drugs, selling non drug consumables and charging consultation fees for personal gains.

“She did all these things whilst not being a licensed or certified prescriber”, Dr Ibrahim-Betonsi stated.

Subsequently, Dr Francis Ibrahim-Betonsi had to make another report to the Medical Director, concerning other forms of conspiracies against him, including how the nurses who were supposed to work with him on June 4, 2009 boycotted work after he had been called by one Dr. Richard Anthony to come and assist at the Diabetic Clinic that day.

In spite of all these machinations against him, which he reported to the medical director to address, Dr. Ibrahim-Betonsi was shocked to the marrow, when he was rather the one to bear the brunt.

According to him, he was compelled to undergo three psychiatric assessments because he had been labeled by some staff of the hospital as the ‘mad doctor’.

He said after he accepted and submitted himself for the psychiatric examination, he was cleared of all the tests.

Strangely, however, on December 13, 2012 he was dismissed from the Ghana Health Service.  A letter written to Dr Ibrahim-Betonsi by the then Acting Regional Director of Health Service in the Western Region, Dr Kwaku Anin Karikari read:

“SUSPENSION FROM DUTY WITHOUT SALARY -DR. FRANCIS IBRAHIM BETONSI – HOUSE OFFICER

Kindly refer to the attached letter No. GHS/DGS/R.6 dated 29th November, 2012 from the office of the Director-General, Ghana Health Service, on the decision of the Ghana Health Service Council.

On the authority of the said letter, I formally write to suspend you from duty without salary and the suspension will remain in force until you comply with the directive to undergo psychiatric evaluation and treatment as recommended by the external investigators.

You are, hereby, relieved of all official assignments with effect from Monday 17th December, 2012.

The Medical Director, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital is by a copy of this letter, requested to suspend your name on the government payroll until further directives from this office”.

The author of Dr Ibrahim-Betonsi’s suspension letter, copied the Medical Director, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and the Deputy Director, Clinical Care said.

In an interview with The Chronicle, Dr. Ibrahim-Betonsi, who is now working at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga, lamented that his wrongful dismissal affected his promotion, his career path, social and family life.

Aside what he describes as humiliation and torture by his employer, the Ghana Health Service, prior to his dismissal and during the six-year period he sat at home, so much harm has been caused to his contribution to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

He recounted that the decision by the GHS to dismiss him was completely against his human rights and also contrary to the Labour Laws of Ghana, thus the National Labour Law should intervene on his behalf to help him get his compensation, SSNIT contributions and right promotion.

According to him, he had personally petitioned the NLC in writing on four occasions but it never responded to his letter until he instructed his legal representative to write to the commission before the commission wrote to the Ghana Health Service to respond.

However, the GHS, rather in a bizarre manner, wrote and dismissed him.

Dr. Ibrahim-Betonsi told this reporter, since 2012, that he is still at the Human Rights Court 2 in Accra, seeking compensation and damages for the injustices meted out to him.

NPA explains why subsidy on RFO has been removed

0
Mr Abass Tasunti speaking to the media yesterday

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has said it had become unsustainable to keep the subsidy on Residual Fuel Oil (RFO), because the subsidy on it was affecting its supply.

It explained the suspension of the subsidy on RFO was to ensure regular supply of the product to industry, since the high price of fuel and the continuous depreciation of the Cedi against the dollar have made it unsustainable to keep the subsidy on RFO.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra yesterday, the Head of Economic Regulation of NPA, Mr Abass Ibrahim Tasunti, said the revenue the country was generating from the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy had not been enough to pay for the subsidies accruing from RFO and premix fuel.

He stressed that as the prices of fuel and the exchange rate rise, subsidy levels also rise, because the full costs of the products are not being passed onto the consumer.

‘The suppliers of this product (RFO) are refusing to supply because the subsidies are not being paid on time. Also, because the subsidies are not being paid on time, the companies have refused to supply the product. They sell and they are not recovering the full cost, and they are also not getting the subsidies paid to them’, he said.

The government paid GHc136 million as subsidy on RFO in 2021 and again paid GHc52 million out of the total subsidy of GHc154 million for the period January to September, 2022 leaving a balance of GHC102 million.

Mr Tasunti said the manufacturing industry had suffered to access RFO to power their machines, leading to the close down of some factories.

He said the NPA had engaged players in the manufacturing sector on the challenge in the supply of RFO and the resolution was that in the meantime, the subsidy on RFO should be removed so that they could pay the full cost to ensure regular supply of the product and get their factories running.

“The industry prefers to pay the full cost of RFO so that they can continue running their factories, than not to have their products at all”, Mr Tasunti said, adding that the alternative product that the manufacturing industry could use was diesel, but the cost of the product was very high now.

When the Price Regulation Policy was introduced in July, 2015 government decided to keep subsidies on RFO and premix fuel. And to ensure that these subsidies are funded, the Energy Sector Levies Act introduced a levy called the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy to pay for subsidies on RFO and premix.

Mr Tasunti said the revenue that would be generated from the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy would be focused on only premix fuel for now while the subsidy on RFO would be taken off, until things change.

However, government through the NPA has suspended the subsidy on Residual Fuel Oil (RFO), the fuel used by the manufacturing sector, effective November 1, 2022.

The Authority has, however, maintained the subsidy on premix fuel to continue to cushion the fisher folk.

Police chase two fetish priests over ritual murders at Old Ningo

0
Ghana Police

Police at Prampram are on the heels of two fetish priests suspected to have a link to ritual murders in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region.

This follows the discoveries of two headless bodies of a female at Lerkpongunor and Old Ningo respectively last week.

The fetish priests now on the run are; Addo and Francis, who are well known in Ningo for their practices.

Information The Chronicle gathered from a police source in Tema revealed that on Monday October 24, 2022 police received a report about the presence of the headless body of an unknown middle aged female on the beach at Lerkpongunor, near Old Ningo.

The body was examined, collected and deposited at the Police Hospital in Accra, awaiting autopsy.

The following day, Tuesday October 25, 2022 police received yet another report that a male adult, 46 years old George Osabutey, though a native of Ningo, residing in Dawhenya, had gone missing.

The source went on that, on Friday October 28, 2022 police inquisition led them to the Old Ningo public cemetery, where scientific investigation proved the place to be where Osabutey last visited.

Based on the unfailing lead, detectives searched the entire necropolis for any freshly dug grave and their efforts yielded result.

The missing man’s body was exhumed from an old grave and was found to be headless and later deposited at the Police mortuary.

Further police investigation revealed that on Sunday October 23, 2022 Osabutey informed some friends at Dawhenya that he was going to Ningo to see Addo, but would go to Francis to take him there.

At Old Ningo, there was a cultural group performance to entertain people where the deceased, George Osabutey, was last seen in the company of the two fetish priests.

Ongoing police investigation took them to Lerkpongunor to look for the two fetish priests but almost met their waterloo.

When Police got to the home of one Michael Kwabena, who was to help in the apprehension of Addo, he became so furious and allegedly attempted using a weapon but was overpowered.

He has since been charged with threat of death and also being in possession of firearm without authority.
