Lions devour Kotoko in Kpando

Asante Kotoko and Lions player in a battle for the ball

Asante Kotoko missed a key opportunity to close the gap on the Ghana Premier League summit after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Heart of Lions in Kpando on Saturday.

With leaders Medeama having dropped points on Friday, Kotoko arrived knowing a win would boost their title push, but they were undone by a spirited and well-organised Lions performance. The hosts put their recent inconsistent form behind them and delivered a commanding display in front of their supporters.

Heart of Lions took control in the first half through goals from Seedorf Asante and Fawzi Ali. Both strikes reflected the hosts’ early urgency and attacking intent, as they pressed Kotoko high up the pitch and capitalised on defensive lapses. Lions maintained their intensity and went into the break firmly in charge.

Kotoko showed signs of a response after the interval when captain Samba O’Neil pulled one back, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, Lions remained composed and restored their two-goal advantage through Michael Ephson, who sealed the three points with a decisive finish.

The result piles pressure on Kotoko head coach Karim Zito, whose side again failed to take advantage of results elsewhere. Kotoko remain third on the table, eight points behind Medeama, but their position is under threat with Hearts of Oak closing in and holding a game in hand. The two giants are set to meet in the next league fixture, adding further significance to the defeat.

For Heart of Lions, the victory is a major morale boost. The Kpando-based side climb back to seventh place with 30 points and will hope the result marks a turning point in their season.

Palace fight back to draw at Nottingham Forest

0
Ismaila Sarr, Crystal Palace

Ismaila Sarr’s first-half penalty enabled Crystal Palace to claim a hard-fought Premier League draw at 10-man Nottingham Forest.

The result moves the Eagles up to 14th, while Forest are three points further back in 17th, six clear of the relegation zone.

Sean Dyche will feel that his Forest team arguably deserved better after going ahead when Morgan Gibbs-White calmly chested the ball and opened the scoring with a composed close-range finish.

However, the key moment arrived on the stroke of half-time when home defender Neco Williams was given a straight red card for handling Jefferson Lerma’s goal-bound header.

It provided Palace with a route back into a contest in which they had been distinctly second best, with Senegal forward Sarr stroking home from the penalty spot.

To compound matters for Forest, goalkeeper Matz Sels went off injured at half-time on a day when they unveiled new signing Stefan Ortega prior to kick-off.

But instead of sitting back, the hosts played on the front foot when they could and the likes of Gibbs-White and Ola Aina had opportunities to put them back in front.

While the result arrests Palace’s run of three consecutive defeats they remain without a victory in 12 matches in all competitions. Manager Oliver Glasner will likely be hugely disappointed that the visitors failed to register a single shot on target after the break despite holding the numerical advantage.

Brilliant 10-man Brentford beat Aston Villa

0
Tammy Abraham, Aston Villa

Ten-man Brentford claimed a brilliant win at Aston Villa to dent the hosts’ Premier League title ambitions.

Dango Ouattara’s fine strike stunned Villa minutes after Kevin Schade was sent off for pushing his studs into Matty Cash’s midriff.

The returning Tammy Abraham had a goal disallowed as Villa lost successive home league games for the first time in two years.

They remain third in the table – seven points behind leaders Arsenal – while Keith Andrews’ Brentford sit seventh, four points adrift of the top five.

Striker Schade’s dismissal looked to have given Villa control, only for Ouattara to find the top corner in first-half stoppage time.

Abraham thought he levelled three minutes into the second half after Caoimhin Kelleher parried Jadon Sancho’s strike, only for the goal to be ruled out – after a four-minute video assistant referee (VAR) review – as the ball went out before Villa attacked.

But there were no late heroics as Brentford defended valiantly to hold on for a deserved and impressive victory.

Mbappe scores late penalty to seal Real’s win against 9-man Rayo

Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe stayed calm to roll home a 100th-minute penalty and grab Real Madrid a 2-1 win over nine-man Rayo Vallecano in a spicy La Liga football derby on Sunday.

Vinicius Junior scored early on for Madrid after Jude Bellingham limped off with an apparent hamstring injury.

Los Blancos suffered an early setback as England international Bellingham pulled up holding the back of his thigh, going off in agony.

Vinicius fired the hosts ahead in the 15th minute, showing tidy footwork just inside the area before firing high over Augusto Batalla and into the net.

Los Blancos were in charge, but though they took the lead, their fans were not appeased, and whistled the team in at the break.

Four minutes into the second half, Rayo pulled level. Alvaro Garcia nodded a cross down for de Frutos.

The visitors should have taken the lead after an hour, when Andrei Ratiu ran through on goal with only Courtois to beat. But the Belgian stopper made a superb save to deny him.

Rayo made life harder for themselves when midfielder Ciss was sent off for an ugly foul on Madrid’s Dani Ceballos.

With the clock ticking down, Madrid were awarded a penalty when Nobel Mendy clumsily fouled Brahim Diaz, and La Liga’s top scorer Mbappe dispatched the ball to snatch three points for his side.

Rayo finished the match with nine men after Chavarria was shown a second yellow card for shoving Rodrygo Goes.

Sesko nets stoppage-time winner as Man Utd beat Fulham

0
Casemiro, Manchester United

Benjamin Sesko scored a stoppage-time winner as Manchester United made it three wins in a row under Michael Carrick in a Premier League thriller with Fulham at Old Trafford.

In a match preceded by a protest attended by 500-600 fans, according to police sources, United seemed to be cruising to victory as Brazilian duo Casemiro and Matheus Cunha put them two up with goals either side of half-time.

But after Raul Jimenez pulled one back five minutes from time with a brilliant penalty into the roof of the home net, Kevin looked to have snatched a point with a thunderous strike to the top corner.

However, in nine minutes of time added on mainly due to two lengthy VAR checks that resulted in United having a penalty overturned and Fulham a goal disallowed, Sesko turned on to a Bruno Fernandes pass and drilled a shot into the top corner.

It took Ruben Amorim 36 Premier League games to win three in a row as United chief, his only sequence of successive victories.

Carrick has taken just three and was serenaded by the home supporters as his side went back into the Premier League’s top four.

Bawumia Pays Glowing Tribute to Predecessors

0
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, has paid glowing tribute to the party’s past leaders, describing them as the pillars upon whose sacrifices and leadership the party has been built.

Dr. Bawumia made the remarks when he addressed party stalwarts in Accra after emerging victorious in the keenly contested presidential primary.

Describing the contest as fiercely fought, Dr. Bawumia said the victory was the result of teamwork and unwavering support from party faithful across the country.

“It’s been a fierce battle that we have waged across the country, across all the regions, and we could not have gotten here without the support of the team around me,” he said. “You are only as good as your team in these matters, and I can say without any fear of contradiction that I have been blessed with an excellent team.”

He expressed special appreciation to the National Campaign Coordinator, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Campaign Manager, Fred Opare-Ansah, and the entire campaign team for their dedication.

Dr. Bawumia also commended Members of Parliament who stood firmly behind his campaign, describing their support as phenomenal.

“The MPs who stood by my side were phenomenal in this contest. They supported the campaign and delivered on what they promised,” he stated.

He further thanked party executives and institutions involved in the organisation of the primary, including the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and the media, for ensuring a smooth and credible process.

Reflecting on the party’s history, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the foundational role played by former flagbearers of the NPP, including Prof. Albert Adu Boahen, former President J.A. Kufuor, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“We are standing on the broad shoulders of former flagbearers of this party. They built the party and brought it this far,” he said. “It is truly humbling that I have been elected as flagbearer to continue the work they started, not forgetting the contributions of former Members of Parliament.”

He concluded by expressing gratitude to party members nationwide and invoked God’s blessings on them.

“God bless you all,” he said.

A total of 211,849 delegates voted in the NPP presidential primary, which was conducted simultaneously at 333 polling centres nationwide to determine the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming general elections.

Five aspirants contested the party’s top position: former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong; and former General Secretary of the party Kwabena Agyepong.

There Is Reason for Optimism – Bawumia

0
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is seeking to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the party’s ongoing internal electoral process, describing it as smooth, peaceful, and reassuring for Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking to the media after casting his ballot at the party polling station, Dr. Bawumia said he had been closely monitoring developments and was encouraged by the strong security presence across polling centres, as earlier assured by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

“We are happy with the process. I have been following and monitoring, and so far, what the IGP promised—a strong security presence at all polling stations—is manifesting, resulting in a very smooth electoral process,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia noted that his own voting experience was seamless, adding that the orderly conduct of the exercise reflected positively on the country’s democratic credentials.

“When I voted, the process was smooth. I would like to thank God for how far the process has gone,” he stated.

He also extended gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the exercise, including the Electoral Commission (EC), the party’s leadership, election officials, and the media, stressing that such orderly elections enhance Ghana’s international standing.

“I would like to thank everybody—the people involved, the EC, the national party itself, and the media. So far, it is good for democracy. It is good for Ghana whenever we see things like this; it raises the respect for Ghana,” he added.

Touching on expectations ahead of the declaration of results, the former Vice President urged calm and patience, cautioning against premature predictions or protests.

“We will wait very soon to know the results. Let’s be patient. This is not the time for prophecies or predictions. Let us wait for the count,” he said.

Asked whether he was optimistic about winning, Dr. Bawumia responded that optimism is a natural part of any contest but emphasised that the ultimate decision rests with the voters.

“When you enter a race, you are always optimistic; otherwise, what is the point? I believe there is reason for optimism. Ultimately, the voters decide, and today is their day,” he noted.

He concluded by reiterating that with results expected shortly, it was prudent to allow the process to run its full course.

“Today is not the time for me to make predictions because we are just a few minutes away, and the results will be out soon,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Bawumia Sweeps Majority of Votes at NPP Headquarters

0
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia recorded a decisive victory at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) headquarters polling station after emerging as the top vote-getter in the party’s ongoing presidential primary.

Provisional results from the NPP Headquarters show that Dr. Bawumia secured 308 votes, comfortably ahead of his closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who obtained 160 votes.

The remaining candidates trailed far behind, with Kwabena Agyei Agyapong polling seven votes, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum each garnered three votes at the headquarters polling centre.

The strong showing by Dr. Bawumia at the party’s national headquarters is being interpreted by party observers as a significant endorsement from key stakeholders and officials, many of whom are based at the central administration of the party.

The NPP headquarters is one of 333 polling centres across the country taking part in the presidential primary, with delegates voting to select the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Counting of ballots continues across constituencies nationwide, as party officials compile results from all polling centres to determine whether the contest will be decided in the first round or proceed to a run-off.

After today, we need unity – Oquaye Jnr

0
Mike Oquaye Jnr

Dome Kwabenya’s 2024 Parliamentary Candidate, Mike Oquaye Jnr, has called on party members to exercise restraint and embrace unity after the conclusion of the internal voting process, stressing that political contests should not degenerate into hostility and personal attacks.

“Some of us, we have done primaries so many times. We have done elections on so many occasions. In the long run, nobody will die,” Mr. Oquaye Jnr said, urging supporters to lower tensions on voting day.

He noted that while emotions often run high during internal contests, there was no justification for insults and acrimony among party members. According to him, the end of voting should mark the beginning of reconciliation and cooperation.

“We don’t have to kill ourselves, insult each other, say all sorts of things that are not nice. But today is the last day. After that, we need unity,” he stressed.

Drawing from his own political experience, Mr. Oquaye Jnr said he had previously lost primaries but chose to work with his opponents immediately afterward, a posture he described as essential for party growth.

“I’ve lost primaries before. As soon as I finished at the venue, I mentioned that best of luck to my opponents and started working with them,” he said.

He argued that anyone aspiring to lead the party, particularly at the presidential level, must demonstrate emotional maturity and an ability to accommodate differing views.

“If you want to stand to be a president in terms of flag-bearer and be a president, you must be emotionally mature to do politics and understand that when you also lose, everybody will come and work on board,” Mr. Oquaye Jnr noted.

The Dome Kwabenya parliamentary candidate also criticised negative campaigning, warning that persistent attacks on fellow party members undermine cohesion and weaken the party’s internal democratic processes.

“So don’t say that no this, no good, no this, no good. That kind of campaign is not welcome,” he said.

On predictions about the outcome of the vote, Mr. Oquaye Jnr declined to comment while polling was still ongoing, insisting it would be unfair to make projections before all delegates had voted.

“Some people listening with me here have not yet voted. We want to play the rules fair and right, so we won’t say anything about that,” he explained.

He added that he would only offer his assessment after the close of polls, when voting had officially ended.
