President Bola Tinubu returns to Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria from his state visit to the Republic of Türkiye.

Tinubu arrived at about 8:55 p.m.

He was received by senior government officials.

The President had departed Abuja for Türkiye on January 26, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

It follows an earlier official visit to Nigeria by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan between October 19 and 20, 2021, which reinforced diplomatic ties between Abuja and Ankara.

During the days-long trip, Tinubu and his Turkish counterpart signed nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

At the centre of this was the move to ramp up bilateral trade from $2 billion to $5 billion.

“We also discussed opportunities to support our investments in Nigeria. We believe that the joint Economy and Trade Committee, which we agreed to establish today, will be instrumental in this regard,” Tinubu had said in a joint briefing with Erdogan.

Other deals sealed during the trip ranged from energy cooperation, media, higher education, and Halal Quality Infrastructure, aimed at giving Nigerian agricultural products a competitive edge.

Erdogan said his country would support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, expressing readiness to deepen cooperation in military training and intelligence.

Speaking at a joint press conference, the Turkish president said that under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria is taking firm steps against terrorism, and Türkiye stands by the Nigerian people in this struggle.

The Caretaker National Vice-Chairman (South-South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has said the party is intensifying efforts to rebuild internal cohesion and form broad political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ogidi said the PDP remains committed to defending Nigeria’s democracy and repositioning itself as a formidable opposition party despite existing internal challenges.

According to him, the PDP is fully aware of the seriousness of the country’s current political climate and is determined to live up to the expectations of Nigerians who see the party as a stabilising force in the democratic process.

“Yes, today we have some pockets of trouble in the PDP today, but we are resolute and we believe in God because we know that we are the only viable opposition.

“We are going to fight for that cause; we will do whatever it takes to ensure that we have democracy; if we do not have democracy, then we will have a banana republic.

Ogidi said the PDP’s central focus going into the 2027 elections would be the protection of democracy, promotion of national unity and offering Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling party.

Terrorists burn church

Suspected terrorists have attacked Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, killing one person and setting ablaze the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA) and the police station in the community.

Confirming the attack, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said armed bandits invaded Agwara community and attacked the police station, where they were engaged by a tactical team on the ground.

According to him, the attackers later overpowered the team and “used suspected dynamite to set the station ablaze.”

He added that the terrorists subsequently moved to the UMCA church in the community, where they burnt part of the building, before proceeding to other areas and abducting about five persons whose identities have yet to be ascertained.

Abiodun said monitoring of the situation was ongoing and that “further development will be communicated.”

Reacting to the incident, the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese and Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, appealed to the Federal Government, the Nigerian Army, and relevant security agencies to immediately establish a permanent military formation in Agwara to curb the recurring attacks in the area.

Also reacting, Murtala Dantoro, son of the late Emir of Borgu, Haliru Dantoro, lamented that repeated terrorist attacks had turned once-peaceful communities into zones of fear and uncertainty.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has hosted the Archbishop of Canterbury, His Grace Justin Welby

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State hosted the Archbishop of Canterbury, His Grace Justin Welby, at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House in the state capital, describing the courtesy visit as a moment of reflection on the state’s evolving peace and stability.

The Saturday visit took place on the sidelines of the archbishop’s engagement at the Ahmadu Bello University, highlighting Kaduna State’s progress in peacebuilding and interfaith harmony.

Recalling his first visit to Kaduna in 2002, a period marked by ethno-religious violence and deep- rooted divisions, Archbishop Welby noted the significant transformation the state has undergone.

He commended the relative peace, unity, and stability presently evident across Kaduna, noting that it was due to such improvements that informed his decision to visit Governor Sani.

On his part, Governor Sani commended Welby for the visit and reflections, describing them as a validation of the Kaduna State Government’s deliberate approach to peace-building.

“I expressed my profound appreciation to the Archbishop for the honour of his visit and for his thoughtful reflections. I took the opportunity to share insights into what has come to be known as the Kaduna Peace Model, an approach grounded in dialogue, inclusion, and fairness,” he said.

The governor highlighted what he termed the Kaduna peace model, an inclusive governance framework anchored on dialogue, equity, justice, and mutual respect.

“Over the past two and a half years, this model has yielded measurable results, most notably the absence of ethno-religious conflict in a state once synonymous with division. This outcome has not been accidental; it is the product of deliberate governance choices and a steadfast refusal to allow identity to become a fault line for instability,” he noted

He noted that over the past two and a half years, the state has recorded no ethno-religious conflict, a development he attributed to intentional policies and sustained engagement with all communities.

Continuing, Governor Sani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening unity across religious and ethnic lines, stressing that development must reach every community to sustain long-term peace.

The Ho West District Police in the Volta Region have arrested a taxi driver after allegedly attempting to offer a GHS5,000 bribe to officers during an operation that led to the discovery of suspected narcotics on January 31.

The suspect was intercepted following a tip-off that he was transporting illicit substances from Dzolokpuita to Ho.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rockson Gyasi, the Ho West District Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that officers mounted surveillance, which resulted in the dawn arrest.

He said the team spotted the Opel taxi cab at about 05:57 hours, during which the driver tried to feign engine trouble by opening the bonnet.

According to DSP Gyasi, the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Innocent Kpeglo, quickly admitted transporting the suspected narcotics to a contact in Aflao.

“He immediately confessed he had the parcels and even offered us GHS5,000 to drop the matter,” DSP Gyasi said.

He noted that the officers rejected the bribe and escorted the suspect to the Anyirawase Police Station for a thorough search of the vehicle.

A search beneath the back seat revealed 37 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana, which were seized as evidence.

The Opel taxi cab, with registration number CR 675-12 was impounded, while Kpeglo was placed in custody to assist with investigations.

DSP Gyasi said the suspect was later transferred to the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho and is being processed for court on a charge of possessing narcotic substances.

Women’s Bank will soon be ready for business –Mahama

0
President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that plans are far advanced for the establishment of a Women’s Bank.

He explained that Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyemang, who has been leading the initiative, had informed him that significant progress had been made and that a presentation on the structure and objectives of the Bank would soon be submitted to Cabinet for consideration.

President Mahama made this known when he officially launched the Sheapark Resource Hub Project at the Wa Naa’s Palace in Wa, the Upper West Regional capital.

He said the Women’s Bank would support women entrepreneurs, especially in the northern sector, where the shea industry remained a major source of livelihood for many women.

“In the Upper West Region, the Women’s Bank is going to target mothers who are in the shea nut industry,” he stated.

The initiative is being championed by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and Professor Kwame Addo, as part of government’s efforts to strengthen the shea industry through value addition.

President Mahama noted that during shea‑nut picking seasons, women would be provided with small credits to enable them to go into the bush to collect nuts.

He said the facility would allow cooperatives to hire tricycles to transport the women deeper into the bush and return with the shea nuts, relieving them of the burden of carrying heavy loads on their heads.

He emphasised that women were not merely beneficiaries but the foundation of the initiative, given their central role in the shea industry over the years.

The President said government had already supplied 3,000 pairs of Wellington boots and 3,200 gloves to women in the shea industry in the Upper West Region.

These, he explained, would help protect them from snake and scorpion bites, a major hazard in shea‑nut picking.

President Mahama said the Sheapark Hub was envisioned as a world‑class phased agro‑industrial ecosystem built on sustainability, innovation and inclusion.

It would host modern shea processing facilities for cosmetic, food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical production.

The Hub would also accommodate quality control laboratories, training and capacity‑building centres, storage and logistics facilities, warehousing, direct market access services, solar‑powered energy solutions, water treatment and recycling plants, business incubation, cooperative aggregation and export facilitation.

At full maturity, the Sheapark ecosystem is expected to empower more than 7,000 women in the Upper West region, while creating thousands of additional jobs for the youth.

He added that the Hub would anchor value chains not only for shea but also for associated products such as groundnuts, soya beans, sorghum, dawadawa, cotton and honey.

President Mahama explained that the Sheapark Resource Project aligns with the government’s Reset Agenda, which focuses on adding value to products before export.

This value‑addition drive would extend to several commodities nationwide, including shea nuts, cashew, cotton, cassava, oil palm and minerals.

Justin Timberlake performs for first time since his Lyme Disease diagnosis

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake has returned to the stage for the first time since announcing his Lyme Disease diagnosis.

The “SexyBack” artist performed along with a list of other performers for a special tribute to Pharrell Williams at the Recording Academy Honors Presented by the Black Music Collective Thursday night.

“Anybody who’s come in contact with or been in the same frequency with Pharrell Williams is changed forever,” Timberlake, 45, said between songs, per The Hollywood Reporter.

“He came into my life at a time when I was entering my own, and funny enough, he made me feel like I belonged. Your creativity is unparalleled, your energy is infectious…you changed my life. And I will forever be grateful,” Timberlake continued.

Williams was honored at the event with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award on Thursday.

Timberlake stepped away from his live performances after he wrapped his Forget Tomorrow tour last July. Shortly after, he revealed doctors had diagnosed him Lyme Disease.

“I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease -— which I don’t say so you feel bad for me –– but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes,” he said in a statement shared to his Instagram.

The former NSYNC member added that Lyme disease, which is a bacterial infection spread by ticks, “can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.”

Being diagnosed helped the “shocked” Grammy winner understand “why [he] would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.”

As a result, the “Mirrors” hitmaker was plagued with “a personal decision” — whether he would “stop touring” or “keep going and figure it out.”

He ultimately decided to keep performing, saying that the “joy” his work brings him “far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling.”
