The Chairman of the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Team (ARIT), Benito Owusu-Bio, has hinted that all 124 housing units at Appiatse, which forms part of the first phase of the project, are currently under various levels of construction and hopeful to be completed within the stipulated time frame.

This, he said, is an impressive work as the committee used about 4 months of the time frame given them by the government to work on the temporary structures acquired from FGR Company to provide safe shelter for the people.

Mr Benito Owusu-Bio, who is also the  Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources made this known when he led the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Team to pay a working visit to Appiatse on Wednesday, 18th January, 2023 to, among others inspect the progress of work ahead of the 1 year anniversary.

Another building under construction

Addressing the media, the Deputy Minister explained that all contractors who were trailing behind due to marshy lands at the beginning of the construction have been relocated successfully, and that  currently, all 124 housing units, which is the core part of the Appiatse township are being constructed.

Mr Benito Owusu-Bio in his interview with the media gave a brief on government’s interventions and efforts since the incident occurred a year ago.

“We have just about two days to 20th January, which is exactly a year on since this unfortunate incident occurred and as you are aware, so far government through the Minister for lands and Natural resources,  Samuel A. Jinapor has been working tirelessly to salvage the situation”.

Taking the media through the process he recapped that “government through the Ministry, NADMO and other agencies provided tents, food and basic amenities at the initial stages of the incident.

The government also had to move the people into the temporary settlement when the rains set in.  The Ministry on the instructions of government also set up the Appiatse Support fund and the reconstruction team, while enforcing the safety laws to ensure that such an occurrence does not repeat itself”.

He continued that government also commiserated with the people of Appiatse and helped buried the dead while providing medical assistance for the injured.

Sticking to their promise, Benito disclosed that GETFund has also commenced the construction of a six block primary classroom and Kindergarten for children of school going age at Appiatse as their contribution towards the reconstruction of the township.

The Deputy Minister applauded their effort and called on other organisations that made similar commitments to follow the GETFund example and redeem their promise as the time to put actions to their words has come.

He indicated that road demarcations are currently underway with trenches and gutters to properly demarcate the walkways from the road and the buildings, giving the construction site better outook.

Owusu-Bio assured the media and the people of Appiatse not to fret “as government has begun this good work, it shall surely bring it to a completion as promised”

MrBlankson-Hermans, a member of the ARIT spoke to the technical details of the construction saying “so far the process is commendable because in terms of quality and speed, the most performing contractor is about 39% complete and the lowest performing contractor around 29% and considering our time frame and work schedule, I believe it’s great work and we will surely meet the time”.

He, however, hoped that the contractors will speed up work as he noted that when the rains set in, it may disrupt or delay the progress of work.

Responding to the question of government supporting some students in Appiaste to the tertiary level, the Municipal Chief Executive of the PresteaHuni Valley Municipality, IsaacDasmani said the Municipality is on top of welfare issues and so far one student has been successfully admitted at the University of Mines and Technology (UMat) with some others in the process to gain admission.

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) on Monday this week ended the school shift system at the Manhean Presbyterian Basic School with a commissioning of 10-unit one-storey building.

Each classroom can enrol 40 pupils, and the 10-unit school building, which has two streams—A and B—can enrol 400 pupils in all.

Yohane Nii Amarh Ashitey, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, handed the school building, with ancillary rooms for ICT, staff, a store and restrooms for both pupils and staff, to the Metro’s Education Directorate at a brief ceremony.

The building was started by his predecessor, Felix Nii Anang-La, and the MCE expressed his gratitude to the Tema Traditional Council for its immense support to his predecessor and him for the development of the area.

Mr Ashitey expressed the hope that the ending of the shift system at the Presbyterian Basic School would positively affect the abysmal academic performance of the school.

“From today, Monday, all the pupils will report to school in the morning and close at 2 pm. The teachers will have enough instructional hours to teach our pupils to give us better performances in the subsequent BECE,” Mr Ashitey explained.

He said the Assembly would support the school with more teaching and learning materials to improve academic performance.

Mrs Bernice Ofori, the Tema Education Director, on her part, thanked TMA for the expanded school infrastructure, with an assurance that the new facility would encourage the teachers to give off their best to the pupils because they would have enough contact hours.

“It is true our past BECE outcomes had not been the best because of the shift system we ran. We are going to work hard in the classroom to ensure that we perform better in our next BECE,” she noted.

The MCE, with the Education Director, members of the Tema Traditional Council and some community members, went on to open a lateral school building for the Presbyterian preschool.

He said the school had some computers, but they were mostly obsolete, and that these new ones were obviously going to support their work and make things a bit easier for the school.

The German Ghanaian School, currently with a population of about 220 children from kindergarten to Junior High School (JHS), has wonderful educational infrastructure, located in a serene environment, and is run largely on non-profit basis as the fees charged are not commensurate with normal private school in the country.

I’m ready to change Ghana -Wilberforce Andrews

0
Mr. Wilberforce andrews, An independent presidential hopeful for the 2024 Election

An independent presidential hopeful for the 2024 Elections, Mr. Wilberforce Andrews, says he is ready to lead a paradigm shift that would make the economy more resilient and sustainable.

His touted a paradigm change, he explained, would bring about lasting solutions to the country’s chronic problems, end the winner take all syndrome, and distribute the national cake evenly.

Throwing light on his desire to lead the country as a president, Mr. Andrews noted that both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) had done their best to sustain the democratic gains of the country since the inception of the 1992 Constitution.

However, he was worried that both parties which had led the country in turns since the birth of the Fourth Republic had not done enough to liberate the country from poor economic policies.

“Though we are abundantly blessed with everything we need as a country, we keep going round in circles and begging due to poor leadership who operate a skewed system to benefit themselves,” he said.

“We are all witnesses to how this country has been governed by the parties that come and go after every eight years, and their modus operandi are well known to us all,” he added.

The alleged inability of both the NDC and the NPP to solve Ghana’s problems which keep evolving, he said, must rekindle a new sense of awakening among Ghanaians to support his mission.

Paradigm shift

According to the human rights activist, it was high time Ghanaians had a political paradigm shift and stopped gravitating towards the NDC and NPP and try a new system.

“I have carefully studied world political history and will apply the same success chalked by developed countries to eventually overturn the current situation in our nation,” he claimed.

“I can confidently say that I represent the new leadership drive that all Ghanaians have been calling for in our quest to steer our country into a new path where the interest of the whole country will be a priority,” he stated.

Modernising agriculture

Outlining how he would build the economy, the private businessman explained that “As a country, we must pay attention to agriculture, because it continues to be the back-bone of our economy.”

He added: “We must, therefore, see farming as a profession and inculcate this into the youth particularly those in basic and tertiary levels of our educational system.

“We need to think about modernising the agric sector to bring about value addition to whatever raw materials we produce locally and also concentrate more on what we have the comparative advantage to produce,” he stated.

This, he stated, would enable the country to export more to earn foreign exchange and drastically reduce import of foreign goods to strengthen the local currency.

“For instance, we consume rice, poultry and vegetable cooking oil which are all almost imported. Now the question is that why can’t we produce what we consume locally to stabilise the economy?” he quizzed

“We have the solution to all our artificial problems but we seem not ready to explore because we continue to experiment our future as a country with both NDC and NPP.”

He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to embrace the change he represented and support his vision to be able to build a new Ghana which would abhor corruption at all levels.

Addai-Nimoh to launch new face agenda for NPP to break the 8

0
Francis Addai-Nimoh

Mr. Francis Addai-Nimoh, a presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has recommended the adoption of a new face agenda by the party in order to break the 8-year jinx in Ghana politics.

He said after eight years in government, the party needed to be relieved of the facial fatigue of the leadership in its bid to go beyond eight years in governance.

The ex-lawmaker of Asante Mampong explained his position that a candidate who had been in the present government could not win power for the party in the 2024 elections, hence, the need for the party and delegates to consider his proposition.

According to Addai-Nimoh, the new face agenda which he would launch soon must be characterised by an unblemished character of a candidate who must be a unifier and whose moral aptitude should not be questioned.

“The flagbearer must be a new face with a new language and message, and a new appeal,” he told The Chronicle in an interview in Kumasi.

He said then candidate Atta Mills won the 2000 elections as a new face against Nana Akufo-Addo, who was a Foreign Minister in the Kufuor-led administration.

The presidential hopeful further explained that John Mahama, as a sitting president, could not win the 2016 elections due to the same facial fatigue.

He stressed that the candidate must not be part of the current government or administration, either as a minister of vice president, emphasising that in considering the choice of a candidate, the party must look at the immediate future (2024), medium (2028) and long term prospects (2032 and 2036) and beyond.

Mr. Addai-Nimoh said to secure the future of the party, the age of the candidate should be considered to determine the most suitable person who must also be popular to lead the party beyond the 2024 elections in case NPP was unable to break the 8.

Elaborating his position on age, Addai-Nimoh stressed that he was the most suitable person, because in case the NPP was unable to break the 8 in 2024, he would be 63 or 67 or 71 in 2028, 2032 and 2036, while Dr. Bawumia would be 65 or 69 in 2028 and 2032 in that order.

He said Kennedy Agyapong and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen might be 68 and 74 respectively in 2028, and 72 and 78 in 2032.

He also flawed the imaginary queue in terms of leadership of the NPP, and said there must not be any such queue, and further stated that the party was not doing rotational leadership from the Busia, Dombo and Danquah traditions, because there was no such formula.

According to Addai-Nimoh, the “Yenimwo fri tete” slogan worked for Nana Akufo-Addo in 2007, because the message resonated without challenge.

He, therefore, suggested a lineal formula based on prevailing conditions in the party and in the country, for which the 2023 NPP flagbearership race must be open for the most suitable person to lead and win in 2024, 2028 and 2032.

According to him, the NPP would have an edge over John Mahama if it (NPP) fielded a new face.

He also envisaged that a new leadership for both the NPP and NDC would reduce the level of animosity between them and move the country forward.

Mr. Addai-Nimoh, Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituents from 2013 to 2020, contested the NPP flagbearership race in 2014 alongside Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Dr. Kofi Konadu Appraku, Mr. Joe Ghartey, Stephen Asamoah Boateng and Prof. Ekumfi Ameyaw and placed third in the election.
