Benjamin Djanker and Stephen Okutu Kofi

An Accra Circuit Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest two people – Stephen Okutu and Benjamin Djanker – suspected to be providing land guard service for an estate developer at Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region.

The warrant for their arrest was issued on January 17, 2023 by an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah.

The accused persons, if arrested, would be standing trial with an owner of estate and construction firms, James Okine, Abubakar Issah, unemployed, Kamach Yeboah, Caterpillar operator and Ali Amadu, Caterpillar operator, on the charges of unlawful protection of land.

James, Abubaka, Kamach and Ali have all pleaded not guilty to the charge and had been granted bail in a total of GH¢250,000.

The facts

The trail court was informed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Maxwell Oppong that  the complainant, Godrich Ardey, a businessman who resides at Katamanso, in the jurisdiction of the court.

He added that James Okine, Abubakar Issah, Kamack Yeboah and Ali Amadu are residents of Zenu-Ashaiman, Teiman and Oyibi respectively.

ASP Oppong told the court that two other people, Stephen Okutu Kofi, alias Kofi Santos, and Benjamin Djanker, aka Asaa, who should be standing trial with the accused persons were at large.

According to the prosecuting officer, on January 3, 2023 the complainant reported to the police that his family owns 1.625.474 acres of land at Katamanso, with a land title certificate covering the said land.

In addition to the land title certificate, the complainant also has a Power of Attorney from his family to back his claims.

To verify the documents submitted by the accused, he said police investigation has revealed that the complainant’s family have had the said land in possession for several decades.

However, the court was informed that the complainant’s family had also leased portions of the land to some estate companies who have built estate houses on the land without any challenges.

Meanwhile, the police were informed that the first accused, who also is the owner of Greenlake Estate and has recruited land guards into their family land, who protect him and his workers, while they were unlawfully grading the land to commence development.

The prosecutor told the court that on January 5, 2023 the police visited the scene with the complainant and found Kamack and Amadu using pay loader machine to grade the complainant’s family land under the protection of Issah, Okutu and Benjamin.

He stated that Kamack and Amadu were arrested and during investigation, Okine followed up and he was also arrested.

On the count of this they were charged and put before Court.

Police planted narcotics in civilian accusation: Amina Yutong Bus reloaded

Police car

The Police have arrested a man suspected to be the person in the audio tape describing an alleged elaborate incident of criminal behavior on the part of the Police.

In the audio tape that has been widely circulated, the man, who introduced himself as Dr Patrick Asiedu, claimed that he had been stopped by some Police officers who planted substances suspected to be narcotics in his car and attempted to extort money from him.

The statement said investigations, so far, have established that the man, who has been arrested and is in police custody, is indeed called Patrick Asiedu, an Uber driver and not a Doctor.

The police alleged in the statement that their investigations show that the entire story narrated in the audio tape is false and a total fabrication by the suspect.

“The supposed military intervention and the alleged fight between the Police officers and the Military, described in such dramatic detail in the audio tape are all false and a figment of the suspect’s imagination.

“Equally false are the vivid descriptions of having been taken to the Accra Central and East Legon Police Stations, as well as the Narcotics Control Commission. The claims of fingerprints being taken are also untrue.

“Patrick Asiedu, the suspect, however, alleged that he had once witnessed a similar incident to what he described in the audio tape, which happens to one of his passengers.

“Investigations are still ongoing and suspect Patrick Asiedu, who is currently in Police custody, will be brought to face justice,” the statement concluded.

The whole country almost came to its knees when in late 2010, a certain Amina Mohammed, alias Amina Yotung Bus struck the nation with fake news that there was mass rape of women onboard a Yutong bus.

So intriguing was the narration that people swallowed the story hook, line and sinker. Investigations later revealed that Amina was among passengers onboard the Yutong bus that embarked on a journey that night from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Suntaba terminal to Tamale.

Around Kubease, the bus came across a road blockade mounted by unseen persons but the vehicle run through.

The driver, however, stopped at the Ejisu police station and reported the incident.

Police and military patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene to ensure the road was safe.

On her return to Ashaiman, Amina narrated the ordeal to her friends who decided that the story be concocted to mean there was mass rape onboard the bus.

To them, the story would then be taken seriously and attention given to security on the roads.

When the news broke out, several individuals saw it as an opportunity to defame the government of the time, but no evidence was led by Amina to prove that there was a mass of women on the bus.

We’ve issues with how prophesies are communicated -IGP tells MPs

0
The IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare making his submission . Next to her is the Deputy Minister of Interior, Madam Naans Eyiah

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has indicated that the Police Administration was not against prophecies, but their communication.

According to the IGP, the Police Administration had issues with how these prophecies were communicated, because they ended up creating fear and panic.

Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing in Parliament yesterday, Dr. Akuffo Dampare said pastors could go ahead and prophesise, but should do so in a way that would protect the sanctity of the nation.

He advised prophets to ask the God who gave them the revelation to also guide them on how to communicate such revelations in order not to create fear in people, their families, and friends.

“We are not against prophecies. Go ahead and prophesise, but when God speaks to you, carry it in a manner that will ensure the sanctity of our nation called Ghana.

“…If God speaks to you and you go out there, ask the same God to give you guidance as to how it should be communicated that will not affect the lives of individuals in a manner that will put them in fear, put their immediate family in fear, the extended family in fear and the country in fear,” the IGP said.

He made these comments when the Member of Parliament (MP) of Offinso South and a Member of the Committee, Mr. Isaac Yaw Opoku, asked him if there was a ban on prophecies.

The IGP was before PAC to respond to infractions from some of its departments, which had been cited in the 2020 Auditor-Generals report, but was asked to respond to this public interest question.

The MP said he wanted to know what the Police Administration was doing to minimise prophecies, because they were creating fear and panic among the citizenry.

It would be recalled that before the 31st night of 2022, the Police Administration reiterated its warning to the religious community against causing fear and panic with their popular 31st December night prophecies.

The Administration said the law would be applied to punish prophets who abused the rights of people with their doomsday prophetic messages.

This was due to the fact that these prophecies, over years, have usually predicted the deaths of influential people, especially politicians and celebrities in the ensuing years.

I believe in prophecies, but I have families; use proverbs to communicate.

Speaking at PAC yesterday, the IGP stated that he was a Christian and believes in prophecies just like many other Christians.

He said he was also a prophet, because he was a son of God, and God communicates to his children from time about one’s future if only the fellow is ready to listen to the voice of God.

Despite this belief, the IGP said, he had issues with the situation whereby God reveals something to a prophet and instead of that prophet walking to the fellow to disclose his revelation he does not do so, but rather says it in the open for everybody to hear.

He pointed out that what these prophets forget was that the public officials had families and friends who, after hearing these prophecies, would live in fear and panic for the rest of their lives, something he was not too happy with.

“Why should it be such that you find something; God had revealed something to you and you want to share with me, [do] you have to make it a showmanship and tell the whole country that I am about to die…?

“…I have a wife; I have children; I have a parent who is alive and I have family members, so every day I get up around 3am; and today I woke up at 5am; my wife will be thinking that I am dead. And this is something she is going to live with for the rest of her life.”

Dr. Akuffo Dampare said he believed God wanted to spare mankind from this kind of mental torture, and that was why he doesn’t communicate when a person is going to die, hence, questioned why prophets should be doing so.

“If you have prophecies about somebody dying, you have a way in our typical ‘Ghanaianess’ environment [to] put it even in proverb for the person to decipher it, but you don’t put fear and panic in the person, in the person’s immediate family, the person’s extended family, and the whole country,” the IGP said.

Elected officials can make pronouncements, prophets cannot

The IGP also drew a distinction between pronouncements made by elected or public officials against that of prophets.

According to Dr. Akuffo Dampare, public officials including MPs have the right to make declarations over their citizens because they acquired those mandates through elections and such pronouncements are backed by laws.

In the case of Prophets, the IGP said no one has given them the power to do so hence their pronouncements are not lawful and cannot be enforced.

“Honorable Chair, you are all elected to be MPs by our vote and, therefore, you have been empowered by the constitution and other laws to make certain proclamations, which is acceptable, but those who are prophets, who elected them over my life. Who elected them over my life to just get out there and make pronouncements about me.”

Why not prophesy on your immediate members, but outsiders

Dr. Akuffo Dampare said he found it very surprising that most of these prophecies are not about the members in the church, but outsiders who are not members of the church and may even not believe in God.

“How can a family meet and that family is not thinking about it members, but is thinking about outside people who are not related to the family and be able to get revelation about those people and share it out there to cause fear and panic,” he asked surprisingly.

God is a God of Order

The IGP said that the police are also Christians, but will not sit for people to create disorderliness in the country because God is a God of Order.

Citing an instance to buttress his arguments, the IGP said “imagine someone prophesies that from now until Easter, 90% of markets in Accra are going to be burnt…Imagine how many people will be going to the market everyday thinking that they will not come back?” he asked and indicated the police will not tolerate such disorderliness.

“We are deep-seated Christians who don’t joke with godliness, but we will also not allow anybody to use God to create a mess and confusion, because God is not a God of confusion, and God is not a God of disorderliness.”

PAC commenced public hearings on the Report of the Auditor-General (AG) on the Public Accounts of Ghana -Ministries, Departments and Agencies for the year 2020 on Monday July 16.

Some MDAs including the Ministry of Finance and its agencies- Controller and Accountant-General Department, Ghana Revenue Authority, Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Health and its agencies- National Ambulance Service, Korle But Teaching Hospital, Ghana Health Service have all appeared before it.

Editorial: Ahmed Suale & others also deserve swifter probe by the police

Editorial

On Wednesday, this week, the police issued a statement indicating that the man who made a wild allegation that its personnel planted narcotics in his car and demanded that he paid bribe, else he would be prosecuted, has been arrested. The police statement identified the suspect as Patrick Asiedu, an Uber driver, and not a medical doctor as he (suspect) claimed in his widely circulated audio recording.

Earlier, the police had issued another statement, appealing to the public to help identify the person who recorded the audio, because investigations they had conducted at all the agencies mentioned by the suspect, which went viral on social media, had denied knowledge of the incident.

Indications point to the fact that the suspect will be put before court after thorough investigations.

Indeed, the allegation made by Patrick Asiedu, in his audio recording against the police, was a serious indictment that could have affected the operations of the police if he had not been identified, for him to lead evidence to prove his case. The Chronicle, therefore, commends the police for swiftly investigating the allegation and arresting the suspect behind it.

It is the hope of The Chronicle that the arrest of the suspect, Asiedu, would serve as a deterrent to others who think they can hide behind social media to churn out all manner of falsehoods, just to tarnish the image of an institution or individual.

The Chronicle does not know the age of suspect Asiedu, but we believe he might have read or heard that some years ago, a lady called Amina Mohammed, popularly known as Amina Yotung Bus, made a wild allegation about mass raping of women, when passengers onboard a Kintampo-bound bus were robbed at gunpoint.

Though she was later set free for causing fear and panic by an Accra High Court, we believe Amina Mohammed will never forget the trauma she went through when she was arrested. Unfortunately, because we do not learn from others’ experiences, a similar act has been repeated.

The Chronicle is anxiously waiting to see the outcome of this latest case, should it be sent to court.

But, whilst the police must be commended for the quick intervention in the case under reference, we are extremely worried that the same police are unable to resolve other high profile murder cases that have occurred in the country.

One of our colleagues, Ahmed Suale, was brutally murdered in broad daylight at Madina, in Accra, but up till date they (police) have not been able to arrest the perpetrators.

Jeff Fenec, who was managing some top musicians in Ghana, was also murdered in cold blood, but the police, as we put this piece together, have no clue as to who was behind it. There are many other cases that space will not allow us to mention.

Interestingly, the police are able to investigate and get to the bottom of majority of cases involving their personnel, or the police as an institution. We can recall the case of Constable Owusu Sekyere, alias Kwaku Ninja, who was murdered together with one of his colleagues and buried under concrete in a building that was under construction at Ablekuma, near Accra.

Investigation into Kwaku Ninja’s case was exceptional and the police were highly commended at the time, but they have failed to extend similar in-depth investigations into some of the civilians whose murders are still shrouded in secrecy.

The Chronicle does not want to believe that the police are treating themselves as first class citizens and do not care a hoot about civilians whose taxes are used to pay their emoluments.

If the Police Administration disagrees with us, then they must prove The Chronicle wrong by arresting those who were behind the gruesome murder of Ahmed Suale, the Tiger Eye  Investigative Journalist, Jeff Fenec, and Mrs. Josephine Asante, former Public Affairs Manager of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHPA), among others.

We shall surely return to this topic.

Letter to Senior Opupulepu (215) “Dem Dey Say We No Get Sense!”

0
Opinion

Dear Senior Opupulepu,

How are you do? I am hope you are do fine, just as me and my shordies are all do fine.

Senior, like a week or so ago, I was watching some programme on television, where the Roman Katholiki chief priest of Cape Shore, was been celebrated for squatting on the seat, more than half the distance Ohenma Lizzy squatted on the throne.

Senior, this chief priest did not become a chief priest by mistake. His family was anointed to bring forth a chief priest from inside their family, inside. His family is a family of good natured Ogyakromians.

Senior, first they can dress well, well and when they put on belt, they buckle it perfectly as if it was their family that brought wearing of belt into ewiase. Also, when they buckle their shoes, nothing can un-buckle them. They are the greatest and the best, when it comes to dressing.

Senior, this family are more Roman Katholiki than Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI both, well mixed together. They always openly exhibit such qualities when it comes to Hosanna Sunday. Their women can sow wrapper out of palm leaves and tie round their waist and the men will sow palm branch jackets and wear. Then while brandishing palm branches and trees along the principal foot-paths of Ogyakrom’s capital hamlet, one can hear their beautiful voices singing praises to the Son of David.

Senior, in the case of our Roman Katholiki chief priest of Cape Shore, he used to be the grey sheep in the family. Not the black sheep, because he never chopped bad before, just that he was always always doing things an above-average course-trouble boy will do, instead of learning the Latin lyrics of Holy Mass.

Senior, his pastime was not to play gutter-to-gutter because he will dirty himself; it was not to go plucking coconut from people’s coconut trees because it was against “Thou shall, not steal” andit was not chasing bailaa(mice found residing in fields), because he believed that all animals are also created by God and so they are our siblings, some.

Senior, his pastime and vocation was to play chass-kele and he was such an expert and in fact a GOAT, Greatest Of All Times, when it came to this sport. In the neighbourhood, he was called Chassey. So, his father who wanted an appropriate Christo name for him, decided the Spiritus Sanctohas come out with a name and so named him Chassey.

Senior, many years after he ascended on the seat as a Katholiki chief priest, he also revealed that he was born to be a member of all religions. He could dress like a Ganja man and also sing like one. His favourite song was that Song of Freedom.

Senior, I was told from my sources at the Pope’s palace, that they wanted to transfer him permanently to the Rasta religion, but he defended himself by saying that, that song sung talked about what was done to the prophets as written in the Holy Book. And since he was truly one of the prophets, if they like they should banish him, like they will see something coming upon them from Yahweh’s Kingdom.

Senior, none of the elders had courage to cast the first stone, so they left one by one starting from the youngest.

Senior, the life and status of this chief priest, who can carry and wave palm branches more than any other chief priest, who can buckle his belt and shoes more than even the Long Noses can and who was named after a very popular and famous game, chass-kele, was sanctified the more.

Senior, during the festivities and jubilations of his long squatting period on the seat, I saw our Omanhene, Nana Onsurowuo Owuobia ye Owuo, the Great Leopard, in the midst. And when he was asked to talk some, he started with his signature tune, “Fellow Garians.” I thought he was going to share goodies here, too, but he swerved me. He only needed my attention, which I thought was not fair.

Senior, how could he joke with my how-far at this day and age.

Senior, a certain priest also came to tell us some tooli, about this chief priest who was celebrating the long distance he spent on the seat. He said something which confused my mind. He said the chief priest had a great sense of humour, meaning he had sense, or?

Senior, this reminded of an incident which could have developed intoa planned accident, which took place in the Ogyakrom Tertiary School during the time that Togbui Xornametor, squatted on the stool, by force.

Senior, it was during sports and games when one school girl said something which only the school kids laughed but the bow and arrow professionals did not.

Senior, another girl then said: “They do not have any sense of humour!”

Senior, hell almost broke loose. All the bow and arrow professionals got very angry and started raging, “You say we do not have sense? You say we do not have any sense.”

Senior, only Yahweh, saved the school kids and maintained peace perfect peace on that campus. Even telling you this is making me fear, fear; afraid, afraid.

Senior, I am Dan, sorry I am done.

It’s me!

Suspected Criminals who invaded Shay Concert, Afrochella Festival in court

Court

Criminals, who allegedly invaded Wendy Shay’s concert – ‘Shay Concert’ – and Afrochella festival, have been put before the Accra Circuit Court.

The Shay concert and Afrochella Festival, which happened almost two weeks apart, were invaded by the criminals who allegedly robbed those who attended the programmes off their valuables.

The accused persons are being tried by two separate courts, presided over by Afia Owusua Appiah and Evelyn Asamoah respectively.

Thomas Attiah and three others at large allegedly invaded the Shay concert, while Daniel Atugah, Musah Ibrahim alias Pantang, Ibrahim Mohammed aka Ashiaman, and Lucky Chinedu stormed the Afrochella Festival.

Attiah was arraigned before the court, presided over by Mrs. Asamoah, and pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit robbery, robbery, and possession of a firearm and ammunition without lawful authority.

Daniel Atugah, Musah Ibrahim alias Pantang, Ibrahim Mohammed aka Ashaimaz, and Lucky Chinedu have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime, robbery, and dishonestly receiving.

The cases are being prosecuted by Chief Inspector Samuel Ahiabor and Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah.

Shay Concert

At the Circuit Court ’10’, C/Inspector Ahiabor narrated that Attiah and his accomplices whose official names are not known, but go by the nicknames ‘War Neer’, ‘Bullet’, and ‘Assah’, shared a common room at the Konkomba market at Agbogbloshie in Accra.

According to him, on Friday, January 6, 2023, Attiah and his accomplices agreed and planned to attend the ‘SHAY CONCERT’ held at the West Hills Mall car park with the motive to rob people off their possessions during and after the entertainment programme, which took place on January 7 and ran through the early hours of Sunday, January 8.

Therefore, the accused persons, on the day of the event, left their place of abode and armed themselves with a locally manufactured pistol, with one live BB cartridge loaded in the chamber, to enable them carry out their robbery expedition.

Between the hours of 12:00am and 1:30am of Sunday, January 8, the accused and his accomplices moved to the Kasoa tollbooth, which is not far from the event grounds, and started robbing passers-by off their valuables.

Attiah was alleged to have been carrying the weapon and pointing it at their targets, amid issuing threats to the victims to surrender their valuables. A complainant in the case, Richmond Okyere, was one of the victims who fell prey to Attiah and his group.

Richmond was robbed off cash in the sum of GH¢300.00, a Samsung phone valued GH¢500.00, and other valuables. Others who used the stretch of road were also robbed by Attiah and his gang.

Fortunately, a Police Patrol Team surfaced at the scene, and as they stopped to confront the robbers, they (robbers) took to their heels, but Thomas Atiah aka Tom Lee Sparta was caught with the locally manufactured pistol and a BB cartridge.

“The accused indicated in his statement that one Yaaba, who resides at Konkomba market, supplied them with the unauthorised locally manufactured pistol to rob victims and bring the booty at all times to him for rewards,” he stated.

He added that efforts were underway to apprehend the accomplices at large and bring them to book.

Afrochella Festival

His Lordship Samuel Bright Acquah was informed by Chief Inspector Anquandah that the complainant in this case is a Ghanaian, but domiciled in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

He added that the accused persons were Daniel Atugah, an ex-convict and alleged student, Musah Ibrahim aka Pantang, a welder, Ibrahim Mohammed, unemployed, and Lucky Chinedu, a Nigerian and a secondhand mobile phone dealer.

The prosecution said all the accused persons reside at separate locations at Ashaiman.

According to him, during the month of December 2022, a musical festival, dubbed “Afrochella”, was held at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra to promote Africas diverse cultures and creativity.

He further stated that the programme attracted patrons from all walks of life, including the complainant who was in the country during the Christmas holidays.

On the night of Wednesday, December 28, 2022, Daniel Atugah, Musah Ibrahim alias Pantang, and Ibrahim Mohammed aka Ashaiman attended the programme ostensibly to rob members of the unsuspecting audience.

They allegedly wore similar black T-shirts to enable them execute their criminal activities with ease, and to evade arrest.

The accused persons strategically positioned themselves around El-Wak looking for unsuspecting victims to prey on.

About 11:30pm, the complainant was seated at the back passenger seat of a black SUV fidgeting with her Iphone X mobile phone valued at GH¢3,000.00, when all of a sudden, Musah Ibrahim skillfully snatched the mobile phone from her and passed it to Ibrahim Mohammed.

The three, after robbing the phone from the complainant, took to their heels to avoid being arrested.

However, Daniel Atugah was subsequently arrested following an alarm raised by the complainant, but Musah and Mohammad escaped from the scene with the mobile phone. The next day, Mohammed sold the mobile phone to Chinedu at Ashaiman traffic lights for GH¢400.00.

Mohammed kept GH¢200.00 to himself, gave Musah GH¢100.00, and saved GH¢100.00 to be given to Daniel as his share.

Interestingly, on January 3, 2023, at about 8:00pm, Daniel escaped from lawful custody when he was being escorted by police personnel from his residence at Ashaiman.

Luckily, two days later, Daniel was recaptured by the police at his hideout in Ashaiman, and led the police to arrest Musah and Mohammad.

Mohammed also led the police to the workplace of Chinedu, and he was arrested.

Daniel, Musah and Mohammad admitted to the police that they acted together to rob the complainant’s mobile phone, while Chinedu confessed receiving the mobile phone from Mohammed.

Police investigations further revealed that Daniel was convicted 10 years with hard labour at the Ashaiman District Court somewhere in August 2022 for the offence of unlawful entry and stealing, and was supposed to serve the sentence at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison.

After investigations, all the accused persons were charged with the offences and brought before the court.

Executives of the Queen Mothers’ Foundation in a photo with the Comptroller General of Immigration and the Directorates

The President of the Queen Mothers Foundation of Ghana, Nana Ama Serwaa Bonsu, and some Executives have called for collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for a joint sensitisation project to enlighten young men and women on the current migration trends, in an effort to mitigate the increasing immigration threats in their communities.

Nana Ama Serwaa Bonsu recommended this when the executives of the Foundation paid a courtesy call on the Comptroller General of Immigration.

In a close-door meeting, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi, who received the delegation in the company of the Directorates and some members of management, expressed gratitude to the group for extending their support and good counsel to the leadership of the Service.

Speaking at the meeting, the President, Nana Ama Serwaa Bonsu, was full of praise for the CGI commending him for his dedication and hard work over the years which she described as worth emulating by other Security heads.

She, however, bemoaned the deviant activities engaged in by some foreign nationals in the country which continued to cause friction and unrest in their communities. The Queen Mothers appealed to the CGI to help in investigating and apprehending such culprits living in their communities.

The group also emphasized on the need to educate citizens on the appropriate procedures involved in travelling out of the country and the dangers associated with engaging in illegal migration by many youngsters in recent years.

Nana Kobiwa-Akwa III, an Executive of the Association, on her part, shared her experience travelling to many parts of the world which she said had helped to shape her perspective on the job descriptions of Immigration officers.

My experience as a traveler has helped me appreciate the transformation the GIS has seen in recent years, she added. She was optimistic that the new developments in the Institution under the leadership of Mr. Takyi would continue even after the end of his tenure.

Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi highlighted some of the challenges that the Service is currently facing and assured the Queen mothers that, all the challenges they mentioned had been booked and the Service will take immediate measures to resolve the issues in their communities especially the ones that falls under the mandate of the Service.

He noted that the roles played by Queen Mothers cannot be over-emphasized especially in helping citizens to understand and appreciate the work of the Service in keeping our communities secured and urged the group to help educate their communities on the importance of sharing relevant information with officers when necessary.

He finally assured the Queen Mothers that the Service will continue to work hand in hand with the traditional leaders most especially Queen Mothers as they also have great influence on communities.

The Executives of the Association presented a citation in honour of the Comptroller- General of Immigration for his immense contribution to the growth of the Ghana Immigration Service, the National Identification Authority and the Nation as a whole.

Adamawa Speaker appeals nullification of senatorial ticket

0
Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly, Aminu Iya Abbas

The Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly, Aminu Iya Abbas, has asked the Court of Appeal to set aside a judgement of the Federal High Court voiding his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the State’s Central Senatorial election.

The Speaker whose ticket was voided on November 28 last year by the Federal High Court, had early in December instituted an appeal, asking the Yola Division of the Court of Appeal to upturn the trial court’s verdict.

Iya Abbas had prayed the appellate court to allow his appeal, nullify the judgement of the lower court and restore him as the duly elected candidate of the PDP for the central Adamawa district.

He is also asking the appellate court to strike out the originating summons filed before the trial court by the 2nd respondent in the appeal, Ibrahim Mustapha who had instituted the High Court case that nullified his ticket.

DAILY POST recalls that the Speaker’s ticket was invalidated over the participation of Dr Auwal Tukur in the May 2022 senatorial primary of the PDP which Iya Abbas won.

The trial court had ruled that Auwal Tukur incorrectly participated in the exercise, as he did not resign his appointment as the Chairman of Governing Council of the Adamawa State University(ADSU) Mubi.

In his related appeal, Auwal Tukur, through his counsel Eyitayo Jegede, asked the Appeal Court to vacate the orders made by the lower court on the case.

The Court of Appeal presided by Justice Habeeb Abiru, responded during its Thursday sitting by reserving judgement for a date to be communicated to the parties in the case.

Atiku lists condition for PDP members to get contract in his govt if elected

0
Atiku Abubakar

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, says members of the party who may want an appointment or contract from his government, must win their polling units during the election.

He said this on Wednesday at a town hall meeting he held with stakeholders and members of the party in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The former vice president said if the members want PDP to return to power in May, they must go back to their constituencies and work for the party to win the election.

In Atiku’s entourage to the meeting were the national chairman of PDP, Iyocha Ayu, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, former Vice President, Namadi Sambo, former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke.

Others were Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel, former governor of Cross River State, Lyel Imoke, former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, governorship candidate of Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, and the governorship candidate of Lagos State, Jide Adeniran, popularly known as Jandor.

Atiku said: “The fact that you are following the gubernatorial candidate or the senatorial candidate or the House of Representatives candidate or the presidential candidate to campaigns is no qualification that you will get an appointment, it is not a qualification that you will get a contract, whether at the local government level, state or the federal level.

“The only way, as far as I am concerned, if I am president, if you come and say you want a job or you want a contract, I will ask you let me have the result of your polling booth and that is what I am going to direct to everybody, because unless we do that we will not win the elections.”
