For the second time since his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in Lagos, the trial of the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Kunle Oluomo, has again been adjourned.

Mr Oluomo was first docked before the Federal High Court in Lagos where he secured bail after he was arrested by the anti-graft agency at the airport last September. The case was later transferred to Ogun State.

The trial at the Federal High Court in Ogun was initially scheduled for 21st November 2022 but was stalled due to pre-election matters

On Monday, the trial was postponed again with no formal reason given publicly. When asked for the reason for the postponement, one of the EFCC lawyers who did not wait to give his name said, “the registrar will tell you the reason.”

An official of the court, who asked not to be named, however, said the trial was postponed because the presiding judge, Joyce Abdulmalik, said she was ill.

The adjournment was quietly communicated to lawyers and other parties by court officials around 10:42 a.m.

Nigerian flights disrupted as ground staff go on strike

Nigerian flights disrupted

Airlines in Nigeria said on Monday that flights were being disrupted after ground staff began an indefinite strike to demand higher pay.

Air Peace, which has the biggest fleet in Nigeria, and smaller domestic carrier Dana Air said the strike by the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) was delaying flights and they hoped the issue would be quickly resolved.

“The strike has affected all operations of all airlines being handled by the company [NAHCO],” Air Peace said in a statement.

British Airways and Qatar Airways, among the foreign airlines frequently flying to Nigeria, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The National Union of Transport Employees and Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria issued a notice last week that its members would go on strike from Monday to press NAHCO for better pay.

Flight disruptions are common in Nigeria due to issues surrounding logistics, labour union strikes and fuel scarcity. In May 2022, the Airline Operators of Nigeria, an umbrella organisation of domestic airlines, suspended flights for days saying the price of jet fuel had jumped from 190 to 700 Nigerian naira per litre (from $0.45 to almost $1.70). The rise was primarily caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.

The Obuasi Office of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has taken education on MyNHIS App to the doorsteps of residents.

The App, which was launched in December, last year, enables users to enroll onto the NHIS, using their mobile phones and Ghana Card to ensure inconveniences of accessing the service at the Scheme’s offices were eliminated.

The Obuasi Office, as part of activities to commemorate NHIS’ active month celebrations, visited the Obuasi Central Business District, where it sensitised traders, transport operators and residents on the importance of the App and how to access it.

Mr Kwabena Kyeremanteng, the Manager of Obuasi NHIS, said the introduction of the App was to increase membership across the country, generate digital card for easy access to quality healthcare, and help members to find answers to frequently asked questions.

It also seeks to enable users to get access to the 76-page membership handbook, link their NHIS cards to the Ghana card and have first-hand information on medicine lists under the NHIS.

He said the app could be downloaded on both play store and apple app store for android and apple users, respectively.

Though it could be challenging to access the platform sometimes due to network issues, it was the way to go as a nation to improve service delivery and increase access to quality healthcare.

Mr Kyeremanteng said the office would extend the publicity to the Obuasi East District and the Obuasi Municipality as part of the sensitisation drive.

Madam Clara Boakye, a trader at the Obuasi Central Market, said she did not encounter any challenges when accessing the app on her phone and applauded the NHIS for the innovation.

Drivers at the Horsey Park Terminal lauded the NHIS for coming out with the app but were quick to add that it excluded those without smart phones. GNA

Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has embarked on a “Thank You tour” of the Ketu South Constituency.

It is to thank God and show his appreciation to the people of his home constituency, especially members of the NDC and delegates who threw their support behind him, during the party’s last delegates conference that saw him elected as General Secretary of the NDC.

Speaking at separate thanksgiving services held in his honour at the Resurrection Power Centre- Assemblies of God Church and the Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church, both in Aflao, the former Ketu South Member of Parliament said he saw his election as General Secretary of the great NDC as a victory for all Ghanaians.

He believed that God intended to use the NDC to change the fortunes of the country and transform for the better the sinking economy created by the current “incompetent” New Patriotic Party (NPP) led government.

The former deputy finance minister said it is time Ghanaians awaken and change their mindset in the journey to elect leaders who place the national interest above their personal and parochial interests and not the other way round, as evidenced by the conduct and character of the current NPP leadership.

“I believe that the time has come when Ghanaians need to change our mindset in the way we elect our leaders – we must begin to identify and elect leaders who would not place their personal and party interests above the national interest. If the people change their mindset, leadership has no option than to change as well,” the NDC General Secretary said.

Mr Kwetey observed that Ghana had since the time of its first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah been hailed as a beacon of hope and prosperity and a model for other nations on the African continent, but sadly, that enviable position was gradually fading away due to bad leadership.

The NDC scribe called on all Ghanaians to throw their support behind the NDC in the upcoming 2024 general elections to ensure victory for “the only political party poised to restore hope to Ghanaians and restore the country back to its past glory as that beacon of hope, democracy and prosperity.

The NDC General Secretary was accompanied on the tour by the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Mr Mawutor Agbavitor, Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr. James Gunu, Regional Secretary of the party, Mr Bright Kumordzi, Ketu South Constituency Chairman of the party, as well as other executives of the party from the constituency and the region.

The team also paid separate courtesy calls on the Paramount Chief of the Aflao traditional area, Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Some traditional area, Torgbiga Adamah III, Paramount Chief of the Klikor traditional area, Torgbiga Addo VIII as well as Torgbi Saba V, ‘dufia’ of Nogokpo.

Fraud

A 28-year-old banker, who allegedly took GHS274,000.00 from a business consultant under the pretext of investing it for him at TF Finance Service but failed, has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court. The accused person is said to have used the money for her personal gain.

Charged with defrauding by false pretense, Fredricca Appiah pleaded not guilty.

The Court, presided over by Mrs Susana Eduful, admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of GHS300,000.00 with three sureties. The Court ordered that all the sureties should be family members.

Prosecution was directed by the Court to file and serve all disclosures and witness statements on the lawyers of the accused person. The case has been adjourned to March 7, 2023.

Police Inspector Teye Okuffo, prosecuting, told the Court that the Complainant, Atazona Abdul Rahman Awineyanga, is a business Consultant and a resident of Achimota, while the accused person resides at Burma Camp.

The Prosecution said both the accused person and the Complainant were involved in a business deal called “pay off” for a long time.

It said on June 7, 2022, the accused person approached the complainant and told him about the investment promotional package that TF Finance Service were embarking on.

The Prosecution said the complainant, who was also a businessman, decided to give it a try.

It said the accused person demanded and collected GHS274,000.00 from the Complainant, under the pretext of investing same for him.

The Prosecution said the accused person, after succeeding in taking the money promised to give the Complainant the investment document, after the money had been invested, but failed and went into hiding.

It said in two weeks the accused person failed to pick up the Complainant’s calls and went into hiding, the complainant made his own enquiry at the TF Finance Office and the company denied ever embarking on any investment promotional package.

The Prosecution said the Complainant then realised that he had been duped and lodged an official complaint to the Nima Police and the accused person was arrested through Military Police, Burma Camp.

It said during investigation, the accused person in her caution statement admitted taking the money from the complainant to invest for him.

The Prosecution said further investigation revealed that the accused person did not use the money for the investment but rather for her personal gain.

Health Benefit of Coconut Water

0
Coconut water

Coconut water is a delicious, electrolyte-filled, natural beverage that may benefit your heart, moderate your blood sugar, help improve kidney health, and keep you refreshed and hydrated after a workout.

Although more controlled studies involving humans are needed to confirm many of these qualities, the research to date is encouraging.

If you want to start sipping this tropical drink, there should be an array of brands on the shelves of your local grocery store — just be sure to avoid products with added sugar.

The human body comprises around 60% water.

It’s commonly recommended that you drink eight 8-ounce (237-mL) glasses of water per day (the 8×8 rule).

Although there’s little science behind this specific rule, staying hydrated is important.

Here are 7 evidence-based health benefits of drinking plenty of water.

1. Helps maximize physical performance

If you don’t stay hydrated, your physical performance can suffer.

This is particularly important during intense exercise or high heat.

Dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content. However, it isn’t uncommon for athletes to lose as much as 6–10% of their water weight via sweat.

This can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, and increased fatigue. It can also make exercise feel much more difficult, both physically and mentally (3).

Optimal hydration has been shown to prevent this from happening, and it may even reduce the oxidative stress that occurs during high intensity exercise. This isn’t surprising when you consider that muscle is about 80% water.

2. Significantly affects energy levels and brain function

Your brain is strongly influenced by your hydration status.

Studies show that even mild dehydration, such as the loss of 1–3% of body weight, can impair many aspects of brain function.

In a study in young women, researchers found that fluid loss of 1.4% after exercise impaired both mood and concentration. It also increased the frequency of headaches.

Many members of this same research team conducted a similar study in young men. They found that fluid loss of 1.6% was detrimental to working memory and increased feelings of anxiety and fatigue

3. May help prevent and treat headaches

Dehydration can trigger headaches and migraine in some individuals.

Research has shown that a headache is one of the most common symptoms of dehydration.

What’s more, some studies have shown that drinking water can help relieve headaches in those who experience frequent headaches.

A study in 102 men found that drinking an additional 50.7 ounces (1.5 liters) of water per day resulted in significant improvements on the Migraine-Specific Quality of Life scale, a scoring system for migraine symptoms.

Plus, 47% of the men who drank more water reported headache improvement, while only 25% of the men in the control group reported this effect (16).

However, not all studies agree, and researchers have concluded that because of the lack of high quality studies, more research is needed to confirm how increasing hydration may help improve headache symptoms and decrease headache frequency

4. May help relieve constipation

Constipation is a common problem that’s characterized by infrequent bowel movements and difficulty passing stool.

Increasing fluid intake is often recommended as a part of the treatment protocol, and there’s some evidence to back this up.

Low water consumption appears to be a risk factor for constipation in both younger and older individuals.

Increasing hydration may help decrease constipation.

Mineral water may be a particularly beneficial beverage for those with constipation.

Studies have shown that mineral water that’s rich in magnesium and sodium improves bowel movement frequency and consistency in people with constipation

5. May help treat kidney stones

Urinary stones are painful clumps of mineral crystal that form in the urinary system.

The most common form is kidney stones, which form in the kidneys.

There’s limited evidence that water intake can help prevent recurrence in people who have previously gotten kidney stones (22, 23).

Higher fluid intake increases the volume of urine passing through the kidneys. This dilutes the concentration of minerals, so they’re less likely to crystallize and form clumps.

Water may also help prevent the initial formation of stones, but studies are required to confirm this.

6. Helps prevent hangovers

A hangover refers to the unpleasant symptoms experienced after drinking alcohol.

Alcohol is a diuretic, so it makes you lose more water than you take in. This can lead to dehydration.

Although dehydration isn’t the main cause of hangovers, it can cause symptoms like thirst, fatigue, headache, and dry mouth.

Good ways to reduce hangovers are to drink a glass of water between drinks and have at least one big glass of water before going to bed.

7. Can aid weight loss

Drinking plenty of water can help you lose weight.

This is because water can increase satiety and boost your metabolic rate.

Some evidence suggests that increasing water intake can promote weight loss by slightly increasing your metabolism, which can increase the number of calories you burn on a daily basis.

Everton close in on signing Danjuma from Villarreal

Arnaut Danjuma

Everton are close to signing Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal after the midfielder completed his medical on Saturday.

The Toffees have been chasing the former Bournemouth man for a while and are set to complete a loan deal this week, despite Frank Lampard’s sacking on Monday.

Everton have fought off interest from the Cherries, while Nottingham Forest were also interested, but Danjuma made the decision to move to Merseyside on Friday.

Lampard had been keen to add more attacking options to his side after the arrival of the Netherlands man, particularly as interest builds in Anthony Gordon.

Everton have been surrounded by unrest at the club with fans protesting against the board in recent times, and Gordon was caught up in an altercation with fans last week.

Danjuma will be the first player signed this transfer window for an Everton side that sit 19th in the Premier League table, two points from safety.

They have only scored 15 league goals this season in 28 games, resulting in Lampard losing his job.

‘Arsenal deserve to be top’ … Luke Shaw insists

Luke Shaw (right) has praised Arsenal

Luke Shaw has brazenly admitted that Manchester United deserved to lose their action-packed Premier League clash with league leaders Arsenal on Sunday. Eddie Nketiah scored in the 90th minute to clinch a hard-fought 3-2 victory for the hosts, extending their unbeaten home run, and moving five points clear of Man City at the top of the table.

United full-back Shaw endured a difficult afternoon against his England team-mate Bukayo Saka, with the Arsenal winger scoring in the second-half to give Mikel Arteta’s side a 2-1 lead.

Erik ten Hag’s side started brightly and in-form man Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a stunning finish.

He said: ‘In the second half maybe we deserved that. We were a bit passive and we let them control the game in the second half and to concede right at the end is gutting.

‘We know they’re an extremely good side and we were fighting all the way until that last second.

‘In games like this, you need to be concentrating for the whole game because one lapse in concentration and you will concede against a good side.

‘You have to give Arsenal credit for what they have done this season. We are only half way but they deserve to be at the top from the way they are playing.

‘The quality of these games are getting much more. It was a very tough game to be involved in but these are the games everyone wants to be involved in to test yourself against the best.

‘But we are gutted in the dressing room for conceding late on.’

United’s attention now turns to a Carabao Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest on Wednesday with Shaw insisting they need to get back on-track in their bid to reach a first final under Ten Hag.

Bizarre moment a referee shows a white card in a football match

0
Referee Catarina Campos showing the white card

Football history was made on Saturday when a white card, which recognises fair play, was shown for the first time during a match in Portugal.

Red and yellow cards for fouls and misdemeanours have been an integral part of the sport for decades, but Portugal has introduced a white one as part of a series of new initiatives in the country.

Referee Catarina Campos brandished the card – shown to recognise and encourage fair play – during a women’s cup clash between Sporting Lisbon and Benfica in Lisbon at the weekend in a first for the game.

Shortly before half-time in the Taca de Portugal Feminina match – the Portuguese equivalent of the Women’s FA Cup – the official showed the card as she would have a red or yellow, and received a good reception from the crowd at the Estadio da Luz.

Someone on a bench in the dugout had fallen ill, with medical staff from both teams quickly going to their aid.

The referee took out the card and showed it to members of both sides’ medical teams, prompting a warm reception from fans.

The card can be shown to recognise and encourage fair play and is designed to ‘improve ethical value in the sport’.

Everton sack Frank Lampard over the phone

0
Frank Lampard, sacked

Frank Lampard’s reign as Everton manager is over after he was sacked this yesterday.

The former Chelsea and Derby boss was told his 357 day spell in charge had come to an end during a phone call with Farhad Moshiri, Everton’s major shareholder.

It was the inevitable conclusion following weeks in which he has been on the brink. Lampard had Sunday in discussions with Moshiri, Chairman Bill Kenwright and Kevin Thelwell, Everton’s Director of Football, after a 2-0 defeat at West Ham – Everton’s 11th loss in their last 14 games in all competitions.

Everton, who are in desperate need of new players, are close to finalising a deal to sign Arnaut Danjuma on loan until the end of the campaign but that business has been concluded while Lampard awaited to learn his fate.

The 44-year-old had 18 months left on the contract he signed on January 31 last year.

It has not yet been confirmed but it is expected his backroom staff of joe Edwards, Chris Jones, Paul Clement and Ashley Cole will also leave with Lampard.

It has been a hugely challenging time for Lampard, who had a grown to have a huge affinity for the club, was enjoying living in the North West and was desperate to bring success to a set of fans who had never given him anything other than public support.
