Gomoa West Assembly entices teachers with bungalows

Teachers bungalow at Gomoa Dago

The Gomoa West District Assembly in the Central Region has constructed teachers’ bungalows in some deprived communities to accommodate teachers who accept postings to the area.

This initiative by the assembly was meant to address the accommodation challenges faced by teachers who accepted postings into those communities.

It was also meant to serve as solution to the high rate at which teachers often refused posting to the district or stayed for few years and leave due to accommodation difficulties.

Addressing the Assembly at its last sitting for the year 2022, the District Chief Executive, Mr Bismark Baisie Nkum, explained that the initiative would motivate teachers to stay.

Already, four of the proposed projects have been completed and are currently in use at Abonko, Darmang, Dago and Whida a.

The remaining one, which is yet to be completed, is located at Mankoadze, also within the district.

Rationale behind the initiative

Mr Nkum noted that the Assembly was badly affected by the high rate at which teachers either refused postings or sought transfer from the district yearly. This rate, he said, adversely affected the general performance of public schools in the district and therefore, became a major concern to the assembly.

“It was realised that the lack of accommodation for the teachers was the main reason most of our teachers here have left and it continues to hinder the newly posted ones,” he said.

“Imagine a teacher who goes to use the public place of convenient with his pupils all the time and goes to school to teach the same kids. It creates discomfort”, He added.

In view of the above, he mentioned that the assembly made it a priority to build teachers’ bungalows across the district to provide decent accommodation for teachers.

According to him, this was meant to motivate teachers within the district to stay and also attract others to accept postings into the district.

“The teachers here communicate with their colleagues elsewhere and they know how others engage in other businesses in their community to support themselves. Unfortunately, most our teachers here do complain that the internal economic activities in our communities do not provide fertile opportunities for them to do same”.

This situation and the lack of comfortable accommodation for the teachers, he explained, accounted for the reasons teachers were not willing to remain in the district for a longer period.

Appeal to the University of Education, Winneba

The DCE emphasised that the assembly has appealed to the authorities at the University of Education to annually send some of their students on internship to the district.

This, according to him, would be the first step to help stem the tide, as it would help the district to have more teachers to improve teaching and learning in the area.

The District Director of Education, Madam Cecilia Aboagye, noted that the lack of teachers in the district constitutes as an existential difficulty to the directorate.

She, therefore, praised the DCE and the assembly for their vision and willingness to provide befitting accommodation for teachers and hoped that it would end the attrition syndrome.

The Frante-Sekyedumase Sub-Traditional Council last week Friday out-doored Nana Akua Ahenesima I as Development Queen (Nkosuohemaa) of Frante near Sekyedumase in the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality of the Ashanti region.

The ceremony, which was full of pomp and pageantry, was well attended by people including politicians, celebrities, actors, traditional and christian religious groups, as well as representatives from various groups and associations.

Known in private life as Princess Duncan, Nana Akua Ahenesima I, is the daughter of the renowned Scientist, Prof. Samuel Ato Duncan, the founder and President General of the Center of Awareness Global Peace Mission (COA).

Nana Akua Ahenesima I, who is also the Deputy CEO of COA, had earlier on Thursday sworn the oath of allegiance to the Frantehene, Nana Owusu SekyereBobo III and the elders of Frante.

The Frantehene explained that the development queen or Nkosuohemaa stool was created mainly for development purposes and admonished the Nkosuohemaa to vigorously pursue and realise her development dreams for the Frante area.

He appealed to the Nkosuohemaa to rally the youth of the area, especially the girls, and train them to explore their potentials, in order to reduce the spate of teenage motherhood and promiscuity in the traditional area.

The Nkosuohemaa, in a brief speech said her vision is to revive the culture and tradition of the people which have been forgotten or relegated to the background.

She said her own vision and that of her family for the Frante area and society in general, were enormous and called for the support of the people for realisation of same.

Prof. Samuel Ato Duncan explained that the vision of COA is to ensure global peace and added that development can only strive in a peaceful environment.

He said the Nkosuohemaa title was not for the beauty of it because it entailed a lot and called for the support of the community to ensure development of the area. He also promised to support the daughter to adopt and develop the Frante town to make it a model community in the area.

Nana Amankwah OtuoAmponsem II, Kokofu Aboasohene who chaired the durbar said he admired the youthful energy of the Nkosuohemaa to champion development issues in the Frante area even though she has everything and opportunity to enjoy her own life the way she wanted.

He appealed to the Nkosuohemaa to adopt the school in the town, which is in a deplorable state and uplift it to an appreciable level.

The Kokofu Aboasohene also appealed to the youth of the area to throw their full weight behind the new Nkosuohemaa to facilitate the role bestowed on her.

Some dignitaries at the ceremony included – Prof. Joshua Alabi and Felix Ofosu Kwakye of the NDC, Mr. Frank Kwadwo Duodu, Ashanti Regional Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Akwasi Boadi, aka Akrobetu (Who ‘Nose’ Tomorrow), Koo Fori, Kwadwo Nkansah Lil Wayne and a host of others.

Mercy Johnson in response acknowledged the statement saying, “Yes you did. You told me, ‘Mercy dress properly, you will have kids and when they grow up, they will ask you, why are you looking this way’, yes I remember, I’m lucky.”

She said, “I wanted to remarry but my kids had already come of age and they pleaded with me not to marry another man and they promised they would be my husband.

Rosoboronexport

Rosoboronexport (part of Rostec State Corporation) has added new Russian military products to its export catalog, expanding the range of weapons and military equipment promoted on the global market.

“In 2022, Rosoboronexport has launched a global marketing campaign for 15 new military products developed and manufactured in Russia. Its export catalog was replenished with products for the Air Force, Navy, Ground Forces, Air Defense Forces as well as with UAV countermeasures.

“Market launch of new products significantly increases the competitiveness of Russian arms and strengthens the position of our country on the global market,” said Rosoboronexport Director General Alexander Mikheev.

Among the long-awaited novelties are the Orlan-30 UAV, Ballista remote-controlled weapon station module, Chukavin sniper rifle, UAV countermeasures systems, new underwater weapons, communications equipment, training simulators, motor and armored vehicles.

New Russian equipment and weapons for which export permits have been issued will be presented by Rosoboronexport at international defense exhibitions, during meetings and negotiations with partners, and on fast-growing digital platforms. The company has agreements with most manufacturers to jointly promote products in foreign markets.

The Orlan-30 unmanned aerial vehicle system developed and manufactured by the Special Technology Center is a further evolution of the Orlan-10 UAV, which is well known in the world market and has proved its capabilities in real combat conditions.

The Orlan-30 is intended for aerial reconnaissance, search, detection and recognition of objects in the visible or infrared range. In addition, when equipped with a mission payload, it provides target designation for precision-guided weapons for destroying fixed and moving targets day and at night.

The Ballista remote-controlled weapon station is designed for mounting on armored personnel carriers. It is equipped with a 30-mm automatic cannon and a coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun as well as with two ATGMs. The station is fitted with a combined sight with a TV camera, thermal imager and laser rangefinder capable of detecting and identifying targets day and night. In addition, the Ballista is equipped with a back-up sight, which significantly increases its combat capabilities.

Besides, the promotion of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) with a new remote-controlled weapon station, developed by High Precision Systems holding company, has begun. The vehicle was unveiled as part of Rostec’s exhibit at the Army 2022 International Military and Technical Forum.

The vehicle is equipped with a 100-mm gun/launcher, a 30-mm automatic cannon and a 7.62-mm machine gun. Owing to its powerful armament, the IFV is capable of providing fire support to infantry, including afloat, effectively engaging manpower, lightly armored targets like IFVs and APCs, tanks and other targets with enhanced protection, as well as low-speed air targets, including helicopters.

In 2022, Rosoboronexport added new drone countermeasures to its export catalog. Among others is the RB-504P-E electronic warfare system, which provides highly effective detection, identification, and direction finding of UAVs, as well as jamming of their navigation and control links.

Rosoboronexport has started promoting modern simulators developed by Rostec’s subsidiaries for training the crews of the IL-78MK-90A tanker aircraft and the IL-76MD-90A(E) military transport aircraft. In addition, the company got the opportunity to offer foreign partners a new automated artillery fire control system, a radio signal monitoring system, a heliborne ground surveillance radar system, K-5350 motor vehicle with a protected cabin, Podlet-K1KE radar station, communications equipment and small arms.

“In 2022, thanks to comprehensive support of the President and the Government of the country, as well as the active work of Rosoboronexport within the framework of the Russian Engineering Union’s activities to improve legislation, a number of changes were made to the regulatory and legal framework in the field of military-technical cooperation, which have simplified the licensing procedures for launching new products in the world market.

Legislative initiatives that optimize working processes, including when executing export documentation, were considered during meetings of the REU’s Committee for the Development of Foreign Trade Activities in relation to military products,” added Alexander Mikheev, who holds the position of Deputy Chairman of the Russian Engineering Union.

Northern Ireland spa resort apologises over ‘depraved’ ad

Osnashane House in Ballymoney, which is offering the spa package

Northern Ireland resort has apologised for causing offence by advertising a “bikinis and balaclavas” spa package, but said it would continue offering the service.

Rosnashane House in Ballymoney, County Antrim, drew criticism over the weekend for using the image of a woman in a black bikini and balaclava to market a spa treatment with gun range shooting.

The overnight package includes a hot tub, massage and the chance to fire handguns and machine-guns. “Round up the girls or boys for the perfect fun and pampering night out,” said its Facebook page.

Kenny Donaldson, a spokesperson for Innocent Victims United, which represents people injured and bereaved during the Troubles, condemned the use of garb associated with paramilitaries.

“This is truly appalling, depraved marketing. There will be fools who’ll say, but sure it’s just a bit of craic. No it’s not. Balaclavas and guns brought nothing but carnage to this society.”

Mervyn Storey, a Democratic Unionist party (DUP) councillor, said the advert, first reported in Sunday Life, was in bad taste. “There is nothing glamorous in using balaclavas and guns to promote any business. Where is the respect for victims of horrific violence?”

“The rite of ordination is an honour. The chance to be ordained as a woman in my church is an added honour. I am happy to be a part of history and gender equity in my church. It is exciting, but there is some uncertainty, as well. I do not expect this to be an easy road,” Azar told The Lutheran World Federation last week ahead of her ordination.

In 2018, Azar graduated from the Near East School of Theology in Lebanon before heading to Germany where she studied Intercultural Theology at the University of Gottingen.
