Samini and Sarkodie

Following Samini’s reaction of how disrespectful Sarkodie has been to him concerning a feature he has been chasing him for over sometime, Sarkodie has finally responded to it.

Sarkodie acknowledged Samini’s concerns with a caveat that he has not agreed nor confirmed that everything said about him in this issue is true.

Samini alleged that Sarkodie refused to return a musical favour after he gifted him free verses in the pastime.

Responding to Samini’s accusations, Sarkodie apologised for insinuating feelings of neglect in his colleague and asked him to come for a resolution.

Also, he pointed out that Twitter was not the best place to seek redress in personal matters such as the one that Samini raised. He proposed a direct approach for a speedier reconciliation with the interference of third parties.

Africa meets in Ghana for Prosperity Dialogues

Dr Eugene Owusu is Executive Director of the Africa Prosperity Network, organizers of the dialogues

The rest of the world seems to be moving a little faster than the African Continent. The Continent is arguably, the richest in terms of resources. This, however, has not seen a correspondent response in terms of its development. Africa has been battling with structural vulnerabilities for years. The Continent has been over-relying on natural resource exports. Africa, no doubt, needs to, with much urgency, take greater control of its destiny.

It is in this light that AfCFTA was birthed. Since its formation, the Africa Continental Free Trade Area still faces practical challenges. Africa needs to take pragmatic measures to propel the Continent to a level where it can compete favorably with the other continents.

AfCFTA has an objective of creating a single market for goods, services, facilitated by movement of persons in order to deepen the economic integration of the African continent and in accordance with the Pan African Vision of “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa” enshrined in Agenda 2063;

It is also meant to create a liberalized market for goods and services through successive rounds of negotiations and to contribute to the movement of capital and natural persons and facilitate investments building on the initiatives and developments in the State Parties and RECs;

AfCFTA also aims at laying the foundation for the establishment of a Continental Customs Union at a later stage and to promote and attain sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development, gender equality and structural transformation of the State Parties.

The trading bloc also intends to enhance the competitiveness of the economies of State Parties within the continent and the global market and to promote industrial development through diversification and regional value chain development, agricultural development and food security, amongst other objectives.

This is why the Africa Prosperity Dialogues-Kwahu Summit 2023, under the auspices of the Africa Prosperity Network, is organizing this fora. It is bringing together Africa’s leading voices to think, plan and work together for Africa’s single market.

The dialogues are also used to unlock infrastructure blockages to get businesses whether big or small to trade better across Africa, etc.

These dialogues will allow Africa’s top CEOs, young and women entrepreneurs own the process of making AfCFTA work for greater intra-Africa trade. The Dialogues offers businesses big and small, the unique opportunity to meet with political leaders to join forces to address these challenges. The participants of the summit are:

*          African Heads of State

*          Heads of Regional Economic Communities within the AU

*          Heads of Africa’s multinational corporations

*          Leading African entrepreneurs

*          The AU Secretariat

*          The AfCFTA Secretariat

The Summit takes off at Safari Valley Resort, Adukrom and the Peduase Presidential Lodge near Aburi in the Eastern Region between 26th and 29th January, 2023.

“APN is excited that the much-awaited Africa Prosperity Dialogues are finally here and once again Ghana will be in the spotlight as Africa gathers in the centre of the world. We are hopeful that this ambition will translate into action to transform Africa,” said Kweku Obeng Adjei, Communications Manager for the summit.

Mr. Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager, GNA

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is to provide a US$3 million grant to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to enhance its operational capabilities, Mr. Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager, has said.

The financial support, he said, would see the nation’s wire service rehabilitate five of its regional offices, including the Head Office in Accra, as well as acquire modern equipment to enhance its news gathering activities.

The package will also enable the GNA to train its staff to build their capacity.

“I stand here on behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the Agency, as well as the Ministry of Information to express our deepest appreciation for this great support from the AfDB.

“A very timely intervention at a time the Agency is badly in need of a capital injection,” he stated.

Mr. Owusu, who was speaking at the launch of the Post COVID-19 Skills Development and Productivity Enhancement Project (PSDPEP), in Accra, said the Agency would continue to play its role effectively to promote national cohesion and socio-economic development.

The project aims at contributing to Ghana’s sustainable post-COVID-19 recovery in the health sector and the restoration of livelihoods, income, employment opportunities and private sector development.

It also seeks to promote technical and entrepreneurship for job creation among the youth and women.

Mr. Owusu said the GNA, which was one of the implementing institutions of the project, would continue to be a bedrock of Ghana’s development through the dissemination of accurate and factual news across the country.

Gbane mining deaths: CSO demands compensation for families

0

The Talensi Mining Communities Initiative (TAMCI), a civil society organisation in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, has renewed demands for compensation for the families of 16 miners, who died in a mining pit in 2019 at Gbane in the district.

According to the non-governmental organisation (NGO), dependents of the deceased had been going through hardship to fend for themselves without any form of compensation.

It called on the government and the Minerals Commission to ensure that the families were properly compensated to serve as justice for the deceased.

It would be recalled that on January 23rd, 2019, sixteen miners died as a result of the inhalation of poisonous gas from an explosion within the concession of the mining firm of the then Shaanxi Mining Company Limited (now Earl International Gold Limited).

Although the company denied responsibility, claiming the miners were operating illegally at the Bantama Mining Group, investigations by the Minerals Commission found the company guilty and fined it US$40,000.00.

Meanwhile, Yenyaya and Pubortaaba Mining Groups, which contracted the Shaanxi Mining Company to offer support services, were also fined US$10,000.00 for not providing blasting time notices in the Gbane community.

At a press briefing at Tawka in the Talensi District to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the miners’ deaths, Mr. Albert Naabogbire, a Member of TAMCI, said the Minerals Commission and the government had failed to recognise the plight of the families of the deceased after investigations were completed.

He said although the company was found guilty on several counts of offence by the Ghana Minerals Commission, and was fined, the Commission failed to prescribe any form of compensation for the families.

He called for enforcement of the mining laws and regulations to ensure strict adherence to Regulation 2012, LI 2177 and LI 2183 of the Minerals and Mining Act of 2006, Act 703, which detailed how to handle explosives in mining by both small and large-scale mining companies to prevent accidents.

At the commemoration, the bereaved families held placards with messages directed to Earl International Gold Limited and authorities, generally calling for justice in the form of compensation.

The inscriptions read “The Souls of the 16 Victims are Restless”, “The Talensi DCE Should Compel Shaanxi to Compensate the Victims”, “Shaanxi Must Compensate the Families of the 16 Victims of the Blast Disaster”, and “The Wives of the Shaanxi Blast Disaster Victims are Suffering”, among others.

Mr. Bismarck Zumah, a family member of one of the deceased, said the reluctance by the authorities to ensure the company compensated dependents of the victims, created the impression that their lives did not matter and “rather emboldened the company to operate in reckless manner.”

Ms. Lamisi Maglabna, a mother of one of the deceased, said life was traumatizing since she lost her son because it had become difficult for her to feed and appealed for the compensation without delay.

No data on the number of missing persons in Nigeria – Minister of Humanitarian Affairs

0
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouk

The Federal Government on Tuesday said there is no official register for missing persons in Nigeria.

Adding that there are no reliable national data on the number of missing persons because there’s no official register

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouk made the disclosure during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the ministry in collaboration with the National Human Right Commission, NHRC, the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC.

Sadiya, who was represented by the permanent secretary, Nasir Gwarzo, stated that the country currently has no national structure or Standard Operating Procedure, SOP, to tackle the humanitarian consequences of disappearances.

”The Federal Government was very concerned about often-neglected and tragic humanitarian and social issues. Irregular migration by many Nigerians, including children across borders.

The Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert, in search of safety and a better life each year, often contribute to the great risk of disappearance as the latest figures show that Nigeria is recorded over 25,000 missing persons, including over 14,000 children out of the 64,000 disappeared persons across Africa”, the minister said.

Head of ICRC Nigeria Delegation, Yann Bonzon, revealed that over 13,000 families across the country were looking for their missing loved ones.

Nigerians groan as fuel scarcity bites harder

0
Fuel scarcity

Nigerians have continued to lament the hardship caused by the scarcity of petroleum products across the country as businesses and households that depend on generators for power supply groan in darkness. In recent weeks, motorists across Nigeria have had a hard time getting petroleum products just as commuters continue to lament the ripple effects of the scarcity as a result of skyrocketed transport fares in major cities.

Despite the government’s repeated claims it had enough petroleum products in stock, the scarcity has persisted amid poor supply of electricity across the country. The recent development is coming amid reports of a pump price increase by the federal government.

Last Thursday, reports claimed that the government quietly approved N185 as the new petrol pump price per litre. But the government, however, denied the claim.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari did not approve any increase in the price of PMS or any other petroleum product.

“There is no reason for President Muhammadu Buhari to renege on his earlier promise not to approve any increase in the price of petroleum motor spirit (PMS) at this time,” Mr Sylva said.

But despite the government’s position, PREMIUM TIMES’ found that Nigerians have continued to suffer scarcity of petroleum products across the country.

A PREMIUM TIMES correspondent who visited petrol stations in Abuja Monday afternoon found that many filling stations were shut, while others were besieged by motorcyclists, tricycle owners, as well as private and commercial vehicle owners.

‘Unidentified’ aircraft bombs several vigilantes in Niger State

0
Unidentified aircraft

Many vigilantes were reportedly killed in an air raid by a yet-to-be-identified aircraft in Galadima Kogo, a community in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, on Tuesday.

Several members of the vigilante group, including its leader, were also injured in the bombing, locals said. The vigilante members were bombed as they were preparing to counter an attack against terrorists who had earlier attacked their community.

A community leader told PREMIUM TIMES that during the attack, several villagers were kidnapped and several herds of cattle were rustled.

The community leader, who asked not to be named for security reasons, confirmed the incident over the phone. “It is unbelievable. As of now, I cannot say how many people were killed, but I know they are many,” he told PREMIUM TIMES.

“What I know is that two Hilux vans have evacuated the dead from the camp.

“It is the vigilante men that have been protecting us against these bandits and now that many of them have been killed, we are at the mercy of the gunmen,” the source added.

The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar, confirmed the incident but did not confirm the number of those killed or wounded.

“Government is already on top of the incident as we are battling with the survivors and injured and how to restore peace to the area,” the commissioner added.

Neither the Nigerian army nor the air force has commented on the air raid. However, the air force has regularly carried out air raids in the state to target terrorists operating in rural communities. Sometimes, civilians, including children, fall victim to such raids which are then covered up by the authorities, a PREMIUM TIMES investigation found.

Tuesday’s incident happened barely three days after three persons were killed and three others abducted in Gwada town, in the same local government area.
