LIPPIA TEA: Improves sleep, weight loss & support Athletes

0
By Prof. Raphael Nyarkotey Obu
Lippia Leaves

Lippia Multiflora family, normally known as “Gambian Tea”or “Senegal Tea.” In Ghana, it is known as lippia tea.

Additionally, Lippia Chevalieri Moldenke, however, belongs to Verbenaceae family which normally has its origin in Burkina Faso and other African Countries to treat diverse ailments. Because lippia belongs to the Verbenaceae family, this article will examine the science behind it for making lippia tea.So do not get confused in case I use Verbenaceae or lippia in this article.  Some also say lemon verbena.  I use them because they are in the same family.

 Lippia, Science

Plant Ingredients

Carnat et al. (1999) study found lippiatea made from the leaves of lippia is rich in beneficial polyphenolic compounds including verbascoside and luteolin 7-diglucuronide.

Two studies (Sánchez-Marzo et al. 2019; Portmann et al.  2012)found thatverbascoside in lippia hasstrong antioxidant activity.

Four additional studies (Giancamillo et al. 2015; Mosca et al. 2014; Galli et al. 2020; D’Alessandro et al. 2014) in both animal and test-tube found that verbascoside could avert cell damage and enhance the body’s antioxidant defenses.

Apart from verbascoside, two other studies(Sourki et al. 2021;Ghasempour et al. 2016) espoused that lippia is also clothed with many plant compounds with antioxidant properties, including geranial, neral, luteolin, and limonene.

Additionally, Bellakhdar et al.(1994) found that the essential oils also contain active components such as 1,8-cineole, also known as eucalyptol (12.4 percent); geranial (9.9 percent); 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (7.4 percent); and neral (6.9 percent).

Lippia,  inflammation and oxidative stress

Because lippia is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, it could reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.

For instance, one randomized, double-blinded placebo-controlled study by Mauriz et al.(2014) involved 30 people with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis who took a placebo or 600 mg of lemon verbena or lippia extract with 10% verbascoside for 28 days. lippia led to a drasticreduction of the type of inflammatory marker called C-reactive protein.

Another study worth noting is Lee et al. (2021),which examined 60 healthy adults and found that taking 400mg of lippia extract for 10 days before and during exhaustive exercise tests decreased urine levels of an oxidative stress marker called 8-OHdG, compared with placebo.

The interesting thing is that the lippia group received higher blood levels of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and lower levels of the inflammatory protein interleukin-6 (IL-6), this means that taking lippia could reduce oxidative stress and protect against muscle damage.

A previous study by Funes et al.(2010)  found that giving lippia protects cells against oxidative stress and reduced exercise-induced muscle damage in healthy men who engaged in an intense, 90-minute running protocol for 21 days.

Lippia, helps Athletes

Studies have found that a compound in lippia could protect your cells from damage.

Hence, this may help athletes, as exercise causes stress and muscle damage in the body. This was justified in one clinical trial by Buchwald-Werner et al. (2018) where 44 athletes, took 400 mg of lemon verbena extract before, during, and after an exhaustive test for 15 days led to less muscle damage, faster recovery, less pain, and higher levels of the antioxidant enzyme called GPx, compared with a placebo treatment.

It had been argued that due to the fact, this study was funded by the company that produced the lemon verbena supplement. This might have influenced the results.

In a recent study by Lee et al.(2021), athletes who took 400 mg of lemon verbena extract for 10 days before and during exhaustive exercise tests had reduced muscle pain and lower levels of a marker of muscle damage called creatinine kinase (CK), juxtaposed with those in a placebo group.

In a holistic form, the studies as espoused means that taking mbor mbor tea could help rescue and fight against exercise-induced muscle damage in athletes. Though we need more clinical trials in humans.

Lippia, Sleep Aid

I also found in the literature that taking Lippia tea may deal with sleep issues.  Research also confirmed that lippia was used in the olden days to manage insomnia and induce sedation(Rashidian et al. 2016).

Another recent study by Afrasiabian et al.(2019) used 100 people with insomnia and found that taking 10ml of lemon verbena syrup before bedtime drastically enhanced asleep, total sleep time, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness, as compared witha placebo group.

Finally, two other animalstudies (Jiménez-Ferrer  et al. 2017; Razavi et al. 2017)  found that lippia could have anti-anxiety and calming effects. These properties could also benefit those with insomnia ( Jillian Kubala, 2021).

Lippia, Obesity

Diez-Echave et al. (2020) 6-week study fed mice a high-fat diet. One group was left untreated; another got lemon verbena extract. The treated group had a reduced fat buildup and an enhanced ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes — two large phyla including the gut microbiome.

A similar study by Magne et al.(2020) also found that both humans and animals with obesity have higher Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratios than those who are regarded to have a healthy weight.

Finally,  a previous study by Boix-Castejón et al.(2018)in 54 people with overweight found that taking a daily supplement with lemon verbena and hibiscus extracts for 8 weeks decreased the hunger-promoting hormone ghrelin and enhanced the fullness-promoting hormone glucagon-like peptide-1.  This is interesting.  Additionally, those who took the lippia and sobolo together also had a decrease in body fat as compared to the placebo group.

Let me also say that since the supplement used in this study contains both lippia and sobolo tea, I cannot say the effect was attributed to only lippia  alone. However, what I can confidently say is that for those looking at weight management programs, the lippia and sobolo combination is the deal from the study.

Another issue from this study was that the research was funded or sponsored by a company that has an interest in the supplement. Hence, one could say they tend to influence the results.

Lippia, infections

Studies have also demonstrated the numerous impact of mbor mbor in fighting bacteria.  For instance, Ghaemi et al.(2007) study in animals treated for seven days with either no treatment; a conventional topical antibiotic; ointment prepared from ethanolic extract of lemon verbena; or an injection of lemon verbena concluded that the topical lemon verbena ointment “a proper medication to prevent the skin infection by Staphylococcus aureus” in the early phases of the infection.

Lippia, Joint Aid

Caturla et al. (2010) randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study examined a supplement rich in antioxidants (lemon verbena) and omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) as an alternative treatment for joint management. For nine weeks, 45 subjects with joint pain and discomfort took the nutritional supplement or a placebo. Lemon verbena extract proved strong antioxidant properties and, again, the study highlighted the verbascoside naturally found in the herb. After nine weeks, those who took the supplement demonstrated a drastic decrease in pain and stiffness as well as enhanced physical function.

Lippia, Hypertension

In Ghana, one old study found that this plant is used in the management for the treatment of arterial hypertension(Abena et al. 1998).

Another old study(Noamesi, B. K, 1977)  examined a product called Power Tea herbal preparation in the laboratories of the National Standard Board of Ghana. The result of the chemical as well as sensory evaluation indicated that the analyzed product differed entirely from the conventional tea i.e. Thea Sinensis.

In the laboratories of the National Institute of Health, Education and Welfare, Bethesda, Maryland, some medicinal properties of the preparation were studied. The ability of the extract of Power Tea to lower blood pressure was confirmed in three species of laboratory animals when the extract was injected intravenously. The active principle has been reported to be very potent but appeared to be present only in small amounts in the tea.

Some clinical trials were also carried out on the product and Power Tea has shown hypotensive and hypnotic properties.

It was tried on six drug addicts who have developed resistance to conventional tranquilizers administered for hypertension and anxiety states. Power Tea tended to maintain low blood pressure levels as well as assured adequate sleep and rest. No signs of hangover have been noticed. More new studies are needed to confirm the antihypertensive ability of lippia

Warnings, Lippia

Though it is naturally safe to use mbor mbor,  one recent study by (Dosoky and Setzer, 2021)found that lemon verbena essential oils could increase the risk of birth defects. For this reason, pregnant women should not inhale aromatherapy with verbena.

The European Medicine Agency(2020) also reports that pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid mbor mbor tea or extract, tincture, or syrups.

KinKeliba Tea supports Blood Pressure

0
By Prof. Raphael Nyarkotey Obu

What is Kin Keliba?

KinKeliba has the botanical name Combretum micranthum. As a shrub, kinkeliba is more prevalent in the Gambia, Senegal, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

Kinkeliba Tea

It is used for making tea and has uses in traditional medicine, and is used by many West African Muslims during Ramadan to break their fast. The name kinkeliba is believed to come from the Fulani language. It is referred to as sekhew in the Wolof language and ŋɔlɔbɛ in the Bambara language.

Hearsay evidence attests to the fact that kinkeliba is normally used to treat liver ailments, improve stress, headache, weight, insomnia, and much more especially in Senegal and Mali.  Wikipedia(2022) also confirmed that the name Kinkeliba means “health tree” and the French import kinkeliba and call it “tisane de longue vie” or infusion of long life.

Wikipedia(2022) further narrates that Kinkiliba is used daily to brew a strong tea that is mixed with sugar and milk and is drunk with bread at sundown as a means of breaking the daily fast.

Kinkiliba is used specifically for this purpose because of its sweet flavor and because it is believed to be an appetite stimulant, as those who have been fasting want to be able to enjoy as much rich food as possible in the evening after eating nothing from sunrise to sunset. In Burkina Faso, a decoction of the leaves is used as a medication for malaria.

Plant Ingredients

Two studies (Schmelzer, G.H., 2012;  Bougma et al. 2021) found several ingredients insolated or found in Kinkeliba including orientin (luteolin-8-C-glucoside), homoorientin (luteolin-6-C-glucoside), myricetin-3-O-glucoside and myricetin-3-O-rutinoside, as well as the C-glycosylflavones vitexine and isovitexin and several flavane derivatives.

The leaves contain a high amount of total phenols (13–14%), including gallic acid, rutin trihydrate, catechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, and benzoic acid. From the leaves, a mixture of stereoisomers of the alkaloid betonicine has been isolated, called combetine (0.1%).  Others such as stachydrine and hydrostachydrine were confirmed. Another series of alkaloids were isolated from the leaves, called kinkeloids A–D, having a rare flavan-piperidine skeleton.

Fatty acids such as Palmitic acid (37.8%) and oleic and linolenic acids (together about 18%), potassium nitrate, tannins, the triterpenoids lupeol and α-amyrin, sugars, sorbitol and inositol, the amine choline and the sterol β-sitosterol were isolated.

King Kiliba, Science

High Blood Pressure

One recent randomized clinical trial by Bourqui et al.(2021) compared kinkeliba and wonjo to examine their clinical effectiveness in the galenic forms of tablet and brew (decoction) in noncomplicated hypertensive patients. The study involves 219 hypertensive patients with systolic blood pressure (SBP) between 140 and 180 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) between 90 and 110 mmHg, without cardiovascular or renal complications, who were involved in a multicentric randomized clinical trial in Senegal comparing five treatment regimens: bissap tablets (2 × 375 mg/day), bissap brew (10 g of calyx/day), kinkeliba tablets (2 × 200 mg/day), kinkeliba brew (10 g of leaves/day), and captopril (2 × 50 mg/day) as control. During the 6 months follow-up, a significant and equivalent decrease insystolic blood pressure was observed with the herbal drug approach and control group.

For kinkeliba and wonjo, regarding the galenic forms, the study further found that the brews appeared to besome

what more effective than tablets.

The study also notes that the rates of clinically significant effectiveness or decrease were 75%, 67%, and 65% with bissap, kinkeliba, and captopril, respectively.

After 6 months, a target blood pressure of <140/90 mmHg was attained by 49% of patients with bissap, 51% with kinkeliba, and 40% with captopril. Bissap and kinkeliba appeared, at doses utilized, to be as effective as captopril over the 6-month follow-up.

This study also supports studies, especially with wonjo which beats the pharmaceutical drug captopril interms of blood pressure management (Nurfaradilla et al. 2020).

Others did not show any significant differences to the hypotensive effect(Herrera-Arellano et al. 2004). This means that you can use the herbal kinkeliba or wonjo alone in managing your blood pressure.  The interesting thing about this study is that combining kinkeliba and wonjo could also serve as an effective herbal remedy for managing blood pressure.

A previous randomized controlled trial(Seck et al. 2017) with kinkeliba and Hibiscus sabdariffa in the galenic form of capsules of plant powder, were compared against pharmaceutical drug for blood pressure management. In this study,  One hundred and twenty-five patients were randomly allocated into group 1 (kinkeliba leaves 190 mg × 2/day), group 2 (bissap calyx 320 mg × 2/day), or group 3 (ramipril 5 mg /day) during four consecutive weeks.

A significant natriuretic effect was observed in the kinkeliba and bissap groups but not in patients under ramipril treatment. At the end of the four weeks, 39% of patients in the ramipril group, 37% of patients in the kinkeliba group, and 21% of those taking bissap had normalized their BP.

A more recent animal study( Kpemissi et al. 2022) administered for six weeks also demonstrated that kinkeliba has a positive effect on high blood pressure.

Another study by Traore et al.(2022) also found that kinkeliba is used in the management of arterial hypertension in Guinea. Mashi et al.(2022) in vitro study also found that kinkeliba could act as a standard drug for lowering blood pressure.  A previous study in Mali also justifies the traditional use of kinkeliba in the management of hypertension(Coulibaly, Hawa, 2019).

Antimicrobial Potential

The leaves of Combretum micranthum and C. racemosum are used as an herbal remedy to treat diarrhea and various skin diseases.  One study by Kola and Benjamin(2002) found kinkeliba to possess a greater antimicrobial ability.

Warnings, Kinkeliba

Kinkeliba tea is generally safe. However, studies have demonstrated its ability to help lower blood pressure alone. Hence, those taking standard pharmaceutical drugs and also taking this tea should check their blood pressure as it could lead to hypotension. Consult your Physicians in case you notice any side effects using this tea.

One of the most important health conditions studies have been conducted on is hypertension. Though, more human studies are needed: Two important randomized controlled clinical trials(Seck et al. 2017; Bourqui et al. 2020) were conducted in health centers around Saint-Louis du Senegal. The research team was made up of medical doctors and pharmacists, professors and doctoral students from the University of Saint-Louis, trainees, and Swiss volunteers from the Antenna Foundation.

Kingkeliba  and Hibiscus were compared with pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension, with a 6-month follow-up. The plants were prepared in the form of compressed powder (tablets) or tea (decoction). Five groups were compared: 2 groups of each plant, and reference treatment as a control group. It was found that the use of either plant, in either form, was associated with a reduction in blood pressure similar to that achieved with the reference treatment.  The good news is that these studies were published in the renowned Journal of Human Hypertension.Avoid adding sugar.

I had the option to choose from Bob Marley’s songs and settled on ‘Stir it Up’ –Sarkodie

0
Sarkodie

Michael Owusu Addo, professionally known as Sarkodie has revealed that as part of featuring him on Bob Marley’s song, ‘Stir it up,’ he had the option to choose from the reggae legend’s songs.

According to Sarkodie, he felt the pressure of doing his best composition to match the songs and mentality of Bob Marley. Knowing his state of mind and how exceptional Bob Marley is, Sarkodie said he was burdened mentally.

He, therefore, decided on ‘Stir it Up,’ which is a love song and that will be a walk in the park for him. “I had the chance to choose but I decided on ‘Stir it up.’ As for love, you can easily do your thing.”

As to how he was able to keep the news from the public, Sarkodie says he even had problem with Possi Gee who gave a hint of it to the public since he wanted it to be a surprise to everyone.

In his own words, Sarkodie said; “I was even in the air when the news broke. I landed and saw messages all over that Possi Gee has granted interview and said I have featured someone bigger.

Eno Barony urges Artistes to record ‘full songs’ to avoid disappointments

0
Eno Barony

Eno Barony, 2021 Rapper of the Year award winner has shared her thoughts on collaboration between Artistes.

According to Eno Barony, whether an Artiste plans to feature another Artiste on the song or not, the composer should record in full as though it is a solo song in order to avoid disappointments.

In a Twitter post, Eno stated that:

“Always record a full song even if you wish to collaborate with another artist. When they refuse to do it, you drop it solo. Collaboration is good cus together we shine brighter but a star don’t need light from another star to be seen.”

This tweet was shared in relations to the recent argument between Samini and Sarkodie.

On Monday 23, 2023, Samini shared a tweet about he not collaborating with Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie again. This is because, Sarkodie ignores him anytime he calls the rapper for a collaboration. Samini added that there was a time Sarkodie even stood him up on his Burning EP.

His tweet read: “Not sure I’ll need a verse from sark but if he ever does need one I’m not interested and that’s the facts. He knows this himself. )y3 Alo sometimes and I don’t play like that. Yes or no be problem for am so ego slow you and your project go dull…, he did it to me on burning EP.”

It happens that Samini isn’t the only one who got stood up by Sarkodie. Ghanaian rapper Edem also shared similar encounter with Sarkodie. As a result of this, Eno Barony has advised artists to always record a full song so that in times of disappointments, they can release it as a solo track.

Yaa Pono drags Sarkodie in his new song “Yard”

0
Yaa Pono

Ghanaian rapper Yaa Pono has released a new song titled ‘Yard’ which is allegedly a straight attack to Ghana’s most decorated rapper Sarkodie. Not long ago, news broke about the Sarkodie and Bob Marley feature. This development got Ghanaians excited, which they described as a big feat for Ghana and Sarkodie.

Following this, some musicians have also come up with divergent thoughts about the feature, attacking the multiple award-winning Rap artist.

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale ranted that Sarkodie had featured a Ghost and thus is not anything worth much of an achievement that needs to be marked.

In line with this, Yaa Pono has dropped a diss song that has caused an uproar on social media.

“Since when did we feature the dead?” Pono rapped while indicating that any attempt to exclude him from the list of Tema-based rappers is trash.

“Who runs this yard? It’s Pono who runs this yard.”

Fans think the song is targeted at Sarkodie because the lyrics punch and some lines in the lyrics direct to the Landlord.

‘Onyame Akatua’ not a diss song to Daddy Lumba –Great Ampong

0
Great Ampong

Gospel singer Great Ampong has denied rumours that his latest song, Onyame Akatua, is a diss song against legendary Highlife artiste, Daddy Lumba.

Great Ampong emphatically stated during an interview with Nyansaboakwa on Happy FM that his ‘Onyame Akatua’ song is a reply to Daddy Lumba’s ‘Ofon na di nsem fon’ diss song.

However, in a Power FM interview, the gospel artiste said that Lumba is not the target of his song and that he wouldn’t shy away from mentioning him if he was indeed the one.

“I can compose a song and have his name in it because I have composed songs for people. Some people approach me to compose songs for their dead relatives and I do. I take the deceased’s name and details and then compose the song.

“I could have mentioned his name and the song was more than three to four minutes long but you never heard any name, he stated.

His statement on Radio XYZ contradicts with his claim on Happy FM that he had composed a song in response to Daddy Lumba.

“I said I was going to compose a song, and he will hear from me, but this isn’t the song. I am not backtracking on my words. Did I mention his name when I wrote a song for Nana Addo Dankwa?

“When you listened to my song, did you hear anyone’s name in it? I am telling you the time for me to compose the song for him (Daddy Lumba) hasn’t come,” he added.

He, furthermore, specified that he seldom listens to interviews he grants to media organizations and that he can’t recall the specifics of his interview with Happy FM.

“In my Happy FM interview, I don’t remember what I said until I listen to it. I haven’t sat down to listen to the interview. Even my songs, when I record them, I don’t listen to them again,” he disclosed.

Daddy Lumba and Great Ampong had a good relationship in the past, where the two actively campaigned for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The bond grew stronger with the duo even working on an album featuring songs such as Father and Son, Wotumi Ye Kese, Wo Din No Yekese and the popular Hossana.

However, the seemingly strong ‘father and son’ relationship took a nosedive when Great Ampong publicly claimed Daddy Lumba swindled him of proceeds of the album.

Trump to be allowed back on Facebook and Instagram

0
Former US President Donald Trump

Donald Trump will be allowed back on to Facebook and Instagram, after Meta announced it would be ending its two-year suspension of his accounts. The ban will end “in the coming weeks”, the social media giant said. In a statement, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said the public “should be able to hear what their politicians are saying”.

The then-US president was indefinitely suspended from Facebook and Instagram after the Capitol riots in 2021.

Meta had acted following Mr Trump’s “praise for people engaged in violence at the Capitol”, Mr Clegg said.

“The suspension was an extraordinary decision taken in extraordinary circumstances,” he added.

He said a review had now found that Mr Trump’s accounts no longer represented a serious risk to public safety.

But because of Mr Trump’s past “violations”, he would now face heightened penalties for any future offences.

Meta’s Oversight Board – a body it set up to review moderation rulings – said that the decision to reinstate Mr Trump on its platforms “sat with Meta alone – the board did not have a role in the decision”.

The board had previously told Meta that Mr Trump’s suspension needed to be revisited.

Eight dead after cargo ship sinks off coast of Japan

Members of the Korean Coast Guard search for the Jin Tian

Eight people including several Chinese nationals have died after a cargo ship sank in Japan’s waters, say Chinese authorities. Rescue workers have been searching for survivors since the Jin Tian went down on Tuesday evening.

Multiple vessels and aircraft from Japan’s coast guard and military, South Korea’s coast guard, and private ships have been involved in the search.

Five people who have been rescued are said to be in a stable condition.

The Jin Tian, a cargo ship that had a crew of 22 people, sent a distress signal from a position around 110km (68 miles) west of the remote and uninhabited Danjo Islands in far southwestern Japan, near the maritime border with South Korea.

Six of the dead were Chinese nationals, according to Lu Guijun, China’s consul general in the Japanese city of Fukuoka.

Japanese authorities are yet to confirm the death toll given by Mr Lu, but have said that nine people remain missing. No reason has been given so far for the ship’s sinking.

Nine Palestinians killed in Israeli raid in Jenin

0
Scene after Israeli raid

Nine Palestinians have been killed during an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian health officials say – the deadliest in years. An elderly woman was reported among the dead, in the flashpoint town of Jenin. The Israeli military said its troops went in to arrest Islamic Jihad militants planning “major attacks”.

The Palestinian presidency accused Israel of a “massacre” in Jenin, which has been the scene of repeated raids in recent months.

The incursions are part of what the Israeli military describes as an anti-terrorism offensive that began last April.

Heavy gunfire and explosions could be heard in video footage from Jenin refugee camp on Thursday morning, as Israeli troops surrounded buildings and clashed with Palestinian militants.

The Palestinian health ministry identified three of those killed as Magda Obaid, 60, Saeb Izreiqi, 24, and Izzidin Salahat, 26. Twenty people were also wounded, four of them seriously, it said.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its troops entered Jenin to arrest an Islamic Jihad “terror squad”, who it accused of being “heavily involved in planning and executing multiple major terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers”.

Russia launches wave of missiles

Russia launched a wave of missiles at Ukraine on Thursday, a day after Germany and the US pledged tanks to aid Kyiv’s fight against the invasion. One person died and two others were injured after strikes hit a building in Kyiv, the city’s mayor said.

Officials also reported strikes on two energy facilities in the southern region of Odesa.

The barrage came as Russia said it perceived the tank offer as “direct” Western involvement in the conflict.

In what was a sustained and wide-ranging attack, the head of the Ukrainian army said Moscow launched 55 air and sea-based missiles on Thursday.

Valery Zaluzhny added that 47 of them were shot down, including 20 around Kyiv.

Earlier, Ukraine’s air force said it had downed a cluster of Iranian-made attack drones launched by Russian forces from the Sea of Azov in the south of the country.

The offensive was a continuation of Russia’s months-long tactic of targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure. The freezing winter has seen power stations destroyed and millions plunged into darkness.
