“Gratitude Makes Sense Of Our Past, Brings Peace For Today, And Creates A Vision For Tomorrow.”

It has taken me a good fortune of time to finally settle on the  above caption and to do this tribute rather belatedly but directly addressed to you, my father, brother and friend; former Inspector General of Police (IGP), and later, Naa Ansoleh Ganaa II, Paramount Chief of Jirabaa (corrupted and now called Jirapa). Aside the difficulty settling on the heading; putting words together for a befitting tribute kept playing tricks with me.

However, alas  –  here l am, doing what my fingers have been restricted from doing since the passing of what I call my SAVIOUR for my earthly life existence, as l cruise on in it.

Thus, but for you father, l would not have been here to make “…sense of the past…” which “…brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow [which is my today as l scribble].” My relationship with you began in January 1988, springing from a rather bizarre development l did not know was to inure to my lifelong existence as manifests today.

It all began when as a young Cadre of the Revolution, l discovered, monitored, and got an Indian Hemp (Marijuana) Cartel busted, rejecting a Twenty Million (old) Ghana Cedis bribe which was being routed via a late close friend.

Though very tempting at the time, l closed my eyes to the ‘poverty-stricken’ situation l found myself and got the culprits busted and arrested. The haul at the time was said  to be the largest in the history  of the Ghana Police Service.

There were some British Nationals who were involved in the transaction, but who were aided by the police to escape  –  having allegedly been given Two Million, Seven Hundred old Cedis at the time.

My problems started when l got information about the bribery and sought to get the police return the money and do the right thing. Unknown to me, an anonymous petition emanated from the Korle’bu District Police Command l used in busting the cartel who later took the bribe. ln the anonymous petition and unknown to me, l was captured as having possibly enjoyed a share of the largesse.

It was at this stage, and in my failure in getting the Korle’bu Command to return the money to agents of the cartel who facilitated the bribe, that made me coincidentally petition your office over the criminal development.

This was what led to my being invited to your office as the then Director of the then Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). And then, in the presence of now also late Kwame Annor-Kumi (then Chief of Staff) and one other officer, you revealed to me as being lucky, because the anonymous petition mentioned me as a probable beneficiary of the money given the Korle’bu Police Command.

Father, you were visibly surprised at my principled stance  – rejecting the attempted bribery and making sure l got the culprits busted the very late evening of December 27, 1987.

This was how l came to know you, and when the lead officer who took the money tried to misbehave with  me, you got him (your own kinsman) arrested alongside two Chief Inspectors and the Case Investigator at his District detained at your Headquarters.

As for what l bravely went through at the hands of the Ghana Police Service Administration, that is another long story reserved for my memoirs if l am to attempt one.

THIS IS HOW YOU SAVED ME, FATHER

Readers to this pre-set of  my open tribute to you may see it as unnecessary  – but it is necessary. lt is, because, immediately after that experience, l began having challenges working in Accra by my own working authorities, Committees for  the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs).

For, immediately after l brought in the Police to bust the cartel, my work at Zone Two (Town Council Line in Accra) as a member of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) began shaking.

The lMC was abruptly dissolved without any reassignment. This part of the long story must also be curtailed except to state that l became a persona not needed in Accra any longer.

So, not being able to work with me in the National Capital, the best place l could be sent was to my own background  –  Bongo, Upper East Region. BUT! I was ‘detained’ in Bolga, the Regional Capital under the pretext of being observed.

So, l was sent to the Bolga District Secretariat of  CDRs and made a useless staff; no desk to occupy  – and was once told “…in Bolga we don’t sit on desks…” when l got tired – sauntering around.

Father, it got to a time l thought l had endured beyond normal human endurance. l skipped days going to the office and  was queried the first time which elicited a mild, humble and apologetic response.

The second query did not, for l chose to pour my heart out and damn the anticipated consequences which indeed generated some heat that culminated my dismissal from the CDR, per the authority of the Regional Secretariat.

The Regional not being my direct employers, l showed the letter to then Regional Secretary (Minister), Venerable Lionel Molbila who did everything within his official influence to calm whatever was at stake  –  but was unsuccessful. There was nothing he could do but on his own volition and not as a duty, supported me to come down to Accra and fight my case.

Now, upon my arrival, the National Secretariat was surprised to read such a letter without being notified  –  so, the late Col. Yaw Asase at the time ordered the dismissal be nullified via a Wireless Signal.

Next, l was asked to narrate what happened since my relocation to the Region, which l did  by writing and copied the Upper East Regional Secretariat.

Subsequently, the Secretariat was requested to comment on the issues l raised in my document.

Father, it is  at this juncture that you came in to save my life which l am making public now.

For, instead of responding to the issues at stake at the time  –  a malicious and wicked report full of nothing but lies, alleging l was observed and known to have been crossing the border to Togo  –  liaising with dissidents to overthrow then Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC).

The request by the National Secretariat of CDRs to comment on the concerns in my document was ignored, and a report rather addressed to then Castle Information Bureau, making the allegation as captured in one the paragraphs above.

l was fortunate Father, that the said report was referred to you to investigate, and that was how come you saved my life.

Your main concern was that you could NOT come to believe l can indulge in such a venture. Your conviction was as a result of the The Indian Hemp Bribery Rejection which led us to being acquaintances.

You got the then Greater Accra Director of BNI who later succeeded you as the overall Director, Mr. Yaw Donkor, to look out for me because you had information l was in Accra.

He found me out on a Saturday and relayed the information to me and hinted the purpose of the invitation so if l have any explanatory l material l should a avail them and that exactly  –  l did.

On this particular invitation, it was a one-on-one meeting. You took time to read the correspondences and believed it was an interpersonal issue.

You then asked whether the Regional did comment on the issues l raised as requested and l said NO  –  and NOT to the best of my knowledge.

You then told me and l remember vividly you telling me “Ndor (as Frafra-Dagaaba address ourselves) l now get why this destructive and very dangerous document was written about you  –  but you are too difficult to handle (jokingly)…”

To which l replied in a joke as well, “Sir, l am not difficult, it is my principles that are difficult to handle…” We laughed it off and you told me l shouldn’t worry you will send your report to the Castle Information Bureau. It was on this note that you gave me something beyond ‘TRANSPORT’ (T&T).

Now  –  father, the reason why l said you saved my life, is because l was told by another neck-deep Intelligence Officer of state, that I should forever remain grateful to you  –  why?

Because according to him, that allegation alone was enough for me to have been sought out, tie me onto a weight in a helicopter, flown across the deep sea and dropped to end it all. My family would not have seen me again till Kingdom come.

This is what you did to, and for me which has guaranteed my being here today, counted as a human creature   –  doing  this scribble as my gratitude to your honour at death, unfortunately.

“No one who achieves success, does so without the help of others.  The wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.” Alfred North Whitehead.

Yes  – father, this concluding quote inspires a lot just as the opening one to this rather long read engagement. l really wishes l had the energy to engage you better. However, there is no limit in my heart, remembering you, but for you l would not  have the success of breathing God’s air and counted amongst the living.

You succeeded in life, but it does not mean you never ever experienced some sorrow at a given time.

You sure experienced some pain in periods of your sojourn on this earthly terrain.

But Jim Reeves tells us that:

ACROSS THE BRIDGE  –  THERE’S NO MORE SORROW;

ACROSS THE BRIDGE   –  THERE NO MORE PAIN;

FOR THE SUN WILL SHINE ACROSS THE RIVER;

AND YOU’LL NEVER BE UNHAPPY AGAIN.

REST IN THE BOSOM OF THE LORD. FOREVER GRATEFUL.

Inaki Williams withdraws

Ghana international Inaki Williams has pulled out of the Black Stars squad to face Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier due to injury.

The forward was named in Chris Hughton’s 24-man squad for the penultimate game in the qualifiers away against Madagascar.

However, the Athletic Bilbao frontman will not be present for the clash as he confirmed in a social media post he has been playing with an ongoing ‘pain in his right knee’ and has decided to take time to allow it to heal.

“Since a few weeks I’ve been playing with pain in my right knee. I decided to play until the end of the season, but after having spoken to the medical services, we’ve decided to stop and solve the problem to be 100% for the preseason,” he wrote in a post on Twitter.

“This wasn’t an easy decision to make because I won’t be able to be with my national team, Ghana the next meeting. I want to say that I am fully committed and I will come back with the Black Stars if the coach deems it appropriate next calls.

“Thank you for your support.”

Man United willing to pay Napoli’s Kim Min-jae £51m buyout clause

Napoli's Kim Min-jae

Manchester United are reportedly willing to pay the £51million (€60million) buyout clause for Napoli defender Kim Min-jae.

United manager Erik ten Hag wants to strengthen his defence, with South Korea international Kim having been identified as his key target. Newcastle are also interested in the 26-year-old.

According to Calciomercato, Napoli want to sign Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini to replace him.

Kim was part of the Napoli side that won the Serie A title for the first time since 1990.

United can call upon the likes of Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire at centre-back, but Kim would provide them with another option.

Kim impressed during his first season at Napoli following his move from Fenerbahce last year.

It is likely to be a busy summer at Old Trafford, with United also reportedly preparing a £50million bid for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

United are interested in Harry Kane but face significant competition for the Tottenham striker, especially from Real Madrid.

During ten Hag’s first season in charge United won the Carabao Cup but they were beaten by rivals Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Chelsea reignite interest in £80m midfielder Caicedo

£80million-rated Moises Caicedo

Their £52million bid for Sporting Lisbon’s Manuel Ugarte may have hit the buffers but Chelsea are training their sights on Brighton‘s £80million-rated Moises Caicedo once again.

The deal for Ugarte was off on Sunday night but Chelsea have been running parallel discussions regarding a move for Caicedo with N’Golo Kante now attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.

Brighton, who have agreed to sign free agent and Germany international Mahmoud Dahoud, are understood to have fielded an offer for the Ecuador international with three clubs interested and Chelsea have been evaluating whether any of their plentiful fringe squad could be thrown into negotiations.

As Mail Sport reported last week, Brighton offered £30m for defender Levi Colwill but Chelsea do not wish to sell the 20-year-old and want to find another solution as a potential makeweight.

Chelsea bid £55m for Caicedo in January while Arsenal offered £70m.

Paris St Germain are now pushing to finalise Ugarte’s transfer, following on from reaching agreement to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio on a free ahead of Aston Villa.

Liverpool set to complete £60m Mac Allister move

0
Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool are closing in on their first summer signing with the club hopeful of sealing a deal for Brighton‘s Alexis Mac Allister this week, Mail Sport understands.

Contact between both parties is thought to have taken place and with the midfielder keen to work with Jurgen Klopp, the process is expected to be a smooth one.

The exact value of the move is not currently known despite the release clause in his contract, although the final fee could reach as much as £60million.

World Cup winner Mac Allister signed fresh terms at the Amex Stadium last October, extending a deal that would otherwise have run down at the end of this season.

Manchester United were thought to have been keen on signing the playmaker but were forced to move on after Mac Allister expressed a desire to move to Anfield.

The 24-year-old’s representatives are in England with discussions ongoing.

It is expected that Liverpool will splash more cash this summer even after landing the 24-year-old, with Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone and Romeo Lavia among their other targets.

Indeed, Klopp is keen to strengthen his midfield after James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all left the club as free agents.

‘Real Madrid reserve No 9 shirt for Harry Kane’ …plan £100m bid to sign star striker

0
Real Madrid reserve No 9 for Harry Kane

Real Madrid will reportedly reserve their No 9 shirt for Harry Kane as they prepare a £100million offer for the prolific Tottenham Hotspur and England striker.

With Karim Benzema departing the Bernabeu to play in Saudi Arabia, the Spanish press have wasted no time in pointing out that Kane is a ready-made replacement.

The emergence of Real’s interest in Kane, 29, comes as a major blow to Manchester United, who also want to sign a centre forward who scored 30 Premier League goals in an underachieving Spurs team this season.

While the front covers of the Madrid sports dailies chose to focus on Benzema’s emotional farewell in the 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night, there is plenty of coverage inside.

Marca report that Real have no doubt Kane is their No 1 choice to replace Benzema, with the No 9 shirt now vacant. Kane wears No 10 at Tottenham but Luka Modric has that shirt for Real.

Although only confirmed on Sunday, Real had been aware of Benzema’s intentions to move on after 14 years for several days and had already started work on identifying replacements.

The report said Kane’s name had been on the lips of the Real executive as they held meetings at the Valdebebas training complex in recent days. Manager Carlo Ancelotti and the hierarchy admire Kane and they believe they’ll get three or four seasons of top class performances from him.

Obuasi East DCE spills the beans: How Illegal Miners Attacked Soldiers …Without any reaction from the ‘Abongo Boys’

0
Faustina Amissah - DCE for Obuasi East

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Obuasi East, Mrs. Faustina Amissah, has told The Chronicle that the incident that happened in Obuasi last week, where illegal miners went on rampage, was a very awful situation that should never happen again.

According to her, the professionalism exhibited by the military personnel protecting the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA)Obuasi mines averted what could have been a disastrous situation that day. Speaking in a telephone interview with The Chronicle from her base in Obuasi, Mrs Amissah said the illegal miners pelted the heavily armed soldiers with stones, but because they wanted to protect the image of the mining conglomerate, the men in green uniform did not react to the provocation.

She noted that if the soldiers had not controlled themselves and rather decided to react to the provocation, something untoward would have happened that day.

She, however, noted that they were compelled to call for re-enforcement from the 2BN in Kumasi, when they realised that the illegal miners were bent on causing trouble, having realised that the military men at the AGA were not ready to engage them in any form of combat.

“They were stoning the soldiers because they have now realised that after all, AGA soldiers will not shoot because of their corporate image, so we are working on certain things to have a local soldier barracks,” she said.

She warned that the failure to find an antidote to the incessant incursions into AGA’s concession could lead to the collapse of the mines once again. “If not, before we realise, we have to close down the mines again,” she said.

She denied claims that the government has recalled all soldiers on guard duties at the AGA, a development that contributed the mayhem that occurred that day.

According to Faustina Amissah, AGA has more than 100 soldiers who are protecting the mines every day, but because of the policy not to match the illegal miners boot for boot, the latter has taken advantage of the situation to misbehave.

“At the moment, no cause for alarm –the place is calm. Everything is normal. The place came to normalcy on Wednesday. I even went to work the following day,” she said.

She, however, disclosed that all the illegal miners who were arrested had been granted police enquiry bail.

The DCE regretted that anytime these illegal miners who are troubling AGA operations are arrested, they create the impression that some of their members had died. She insisted that not a single illegal miner was trapped underground, as they want the world to believe.

“They were not trapped – they staged it. They were only refusing arrest, that is all,” she told The Chronicle and insisted that only 101 illegal miners were arrested and not 300 as is being quoted by a section of the media.

When asked why the illegal miners are still operating despite the war that has been declared on them by the government, she responded that sanctions imposed on them after the arrest are not deterrent enough.

She would, however, not blame the judiciary since they are also working within the ambit of the law that prescribes small penalty units for offenders, which are quickly paid by their (illegal miners) financiers.

“Some of these miners have financiers, so you fine them, their sponsors will come and pay”, she told The Chronicle. She, therefore, called for an amendment to the law so that the offenders could be given a stiffer punishment.

“So if we want a result, then I think this penalty something should be looked at”, she suggested.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM), Mr Abdul Razak Alhassan, has expressed concern over the development in Obuasi and demands urgent solution to the problem.

Speaking in an interview with this reporter, Alhassan did not understand why a rational human being would muster courage to enter AGA’s concession, after his colleagues had previously been rounded up by the security agencies.

He disclosed to The Chronicle that this issue has been lingering as far back as 2015 and during that time, GNASSM, together with some stakeholders engaged the AGA to give out some of its unused concession to the locals, which the mining giant agreed, but the ban imposed on small scale mining disrupted the process.

He alleged that when the ban on the small scale mining was lifted, the concession actually released by the AGA, as they had earlier requested, landed in the hands of people who did not merit it.

Some of the illegal miners who were lucky to get part of the concession later split into groups. This development, he noted, is what is causing the constant invasion of AGA underground mine.

He has, therefore, appealed to stakeholders to meet this splinter group and talk to them to re-join their colleagues who have been given a piece of land to work on.

According to Razak Alhassan, the Small Scale mining sector employs a lot of people and that the state must team up with stakeholders to improve upon the sector.

Tarkwa SHS tutor wins Duker Teachers’ Award

Legilature Mreku Duker handing over the key to the $14500 saloon car to Edna Amihere

The second edition of ‘Duker Teachers’ Award’, instituted by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency, in the Western Region, George Mireku Duker was successfully held last Saturday, with the crowning of a Tutor from Tarkwa Senior High school, Madam Edna Amihere, as the overall best teacher.

She went home with a citation and a $14,500 brand new saloon car, sponsored by Nduvu mining Limited, after beating four other male contenders for the overall best teacher category.

The Duker Teachers’ Award is aimed at honouring, celebrating and motivating teachers in the TarkwaNsuaemarea to give up their best. It was instituted by the Legislator last year.

This year’s edition, however, saw two more categories-Non Teaching and Head teacher award categories, making it six awards in number.

The categories are; Non- teaching staff, Kindergarten category, Primary Category, JHS Category, Senior High School Category, Head Teacher Category and Overall Best Teacher Category.

The moment Edna Amihere was announced as the overall best teacher of Duker Teachers Award up stage

A total of nine teachers, plus the overall best teacher, received various prizes and each of the categories had both second and first runner up receiving prizes ranging from chest freezer, 50 inch led Television and a Refrigerator.

The second edition of the Duker Teachers’ Award attracted people from academia, traditional leaders and the business community.

WHY TEACHERS’ AWARD

The brain behind the award and Legislator for Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency, George Mireku Duker, who is also the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, addressing the gathering indicated that developing educational structures and potentials in Tarkwa-Nsuaem was not only about providing the necessary infrastructure, teaching and learning materials but also to take into cognisance the welfare of the human resource that nurture our children.

“You can all attest that, Teachers are the fulcrum around which all discoveries and advancement of knowledge in all fields of endeavor revolve”.

Education, according to the Tarkwa Nsuaem Legislator, has been his top-notch priority to change the fortunes of his Municipality.

He told the gathering that teachers are minimally motivated, irrespective of the strenuous task they put into their work.

That apart, he is also aware that some teachers teach in very remote areas that are not accessible by transportation, yet they continue to give off their best.

“These are some of the reasons why I set forth this journey, through your good selves to change the face of teaching in the Wassa Fiase enclave,” he said.

As a Member of Parliament, Minister Mireku Duker pointed out he is very much committed to recognise  teachers whom he described as the heartbeat of our educational system and even in the face of uncertainties they put up their best to shape the expectations of our future leaders.

“This makes teaching a special profession that requires special values to nurture the young ones. It takes indefatigable men and women called Teachers to imbue the expectations of our young ones towards their aspirations. We have all risen to our current levels just because of some impacts made by most of our teachers.

Today, we will celebrate patriotic torch-bearers and all colleagues in the Profession like them, working assiduously towards the development of Ghana despite peculiar challenges they face in line of work”.

According to him, the reason for instituting the award scheme,“stems out from the various sacrifices made by teachers in this Municipality to impact our children towards their future and I believe the institution of this award scheme is one way towards recognising and motivating their efforts.

I am very optimistic that it is a rightful step towards enriching education in the Municipality and it aligns with contributing towards achieving the targets of goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.

MPDuker assured the gathering that the award scheme has come to stay and “I will like to cease this opportunity to call on all stakeholders to support in making it one of the best awarding schemes in the Country”.

The overall best winner, Edna Amihere expressed delight in winning the award.

A four member committee received 50 applications from interested participants. Thirty six were shortlisted after an interview and 19 qualified for the final awards.

Present at the ceremony were Prof Richard Kwasi Amankwah, Vice Chancellor of University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Dr Steven Saforo Yirenkyi, Chairman of UMaT Council, Regional Education Director, Felicia Adjeibea Okine, District Education Directors, Omanhene of Wassa Akropong, Tetretteh Okuamoah Sekyim II, MP for Kade Alexander Adjare and Angela List, CEO of Adamus Resources, amongst other dignitaries.
