Fire still raging at fuel depot in Sudan a week later

Satellite image from Planet Labs showing the fire still burning on Monday

Latest satellite images show a huge fire that broke out at a fuel storage depot in Sudan’s capital Khartoum is still burning nearly a week later.

The fire broke out on Wednesday last week at the al-Shajra fuel depot in the Yarmouk area during heavy fighting between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces.

It is still not clear how the fire started.

The Yarmouk area has a number of factories, a military complex as well as oil and fuel storage facilities.

There were several fires burning then, but over the past few days it was burning at one location.

Yesterday, Nasa satellites recorded heat signatures from one location which corresponds to the smoke seen rising from the main gas storage tanks in the satellite images from Planet Labs.

The RSF claimed to have taken control of the area and posted a video on Twitter showing its fighters inside a building, with one of them saying they were in a warehouse that stored weapons.

The army hasn’t commented on the fighting there.

The woman had been declared dead in hospital.

A 76-year-old woman who was declared dead at a hospital in Ecuador was found to be alive and knocking on her coffin during her own wake in the city of Babahoyo.

“I lifted up the coffin, and her heart was pounding, and her left hand was hitting the coffin… We called 911 to bring her here to the hospital,” her son Gilberto Barbera said in a video posted on social media.

In the video, people could be seen waiting and supporting Montoya as emergency services arrived at the scene, taking the 76-year-old woman back to the hospital.

A state investigation is now underway, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

It says the woman had been admitted Friday to the hospital with a possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest, and after she didn’t respond to resuscitation protocol, a doctor on duty declared her dead.

The video also goes on to show her hospital tags and then her son, who is shown pleading for an ambulance to arrive.

The woman’s full name is widely reported to be Bella Yolanda Montoya Castro, corresponding to the initials “B.Y.M.C” used in Ecuador’s Health Ministry statement issued on Sunday.

Putin says Kyiv’s counteroffensive failing

Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he believes Ukraine’s counteroffensive is failing, claiming Kyiv’s troops have lost 25 to 30 percent of military vehicles supplied by Western countries since the start of their push to retake lands occupied by Moscow’s forces.

The Russian leader also blames Ukraine for last week’s breach of the Nova Kakhovka dam, which he said was caused by Kyiv shelling the structure with US-made HIMARS missile systems.

Ukraine says Russia launched a “massive missile attack” overnight on the city of Kryvyi Rih, killing at least 11 people and wounding 28.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Russia’s powerful mercenary Wagner Group, says he was “not sure” if his men would continue to fight in Ukraine amid a bitter standoff with the Russian defence ministry.

A Trump supporter argues with a counter-protester outside the courthouse on Tuesday

Donald Trump has arrived at a federal court in Miami, Florida, to face historic charges of mishandling sensitive files.

Mr Trump is the first US president – current or former – to be hit with a federal criminal indictment.

He will be spared a mugshot, but is expected to be fingerprinted and give a DNA sample after the hearing.

This is the second time Mr Trump has appeared in court this year, but Tuesday’s case is more serious.

Small crowds of Trump supporters and counter-protesters were outside the Wilkie D Ferguson Jr court in downtown Miami.

Mr Trump, 76, was driven by motorcade from the Trump National Doral resort – where he spent the night – to court for his 15:00 (19:00 GMT) arraignment. Arriving at the court complex, the procession of vehicles drove into an underground garage.

He was booked alongside a close aide, Walt Nauta, who is charged with six criminal counts related to alleged mishandling of national security documents.

During the drive to court, several messages were posted to Mr Trump’s account on the social media platform Truth Social, including one in all capital letters saying: “One of the saddest days in the history of our country. We are a nation in decline!!!”

Science-Backed Health Benefits of Radishes

0
Radishes

Radishes are often overlooked at the supermarket. But if you want to switch up your vegetable game, add these pinkish-red orbs to your cart. Known for their peppery flavor and crunchy texture, radishes are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. Plus, they’re a type of cruciferous vegetable like cauliflower and kale, so they’re obviously teeming with health benefits.

Nutritious Reasons to Eat More Radishes

They’re high in antioxidants.

Antioxidants neutralize, or “turn off,” harmful molecules called free radicals. (In high amounts, free radicals cause cell damage and oxidative stress, leading to chronic conditions like cancer or heart disease.)

Examples of radish antioxidants include glucosinolates, or sulfur-containing compounds mainly found in cruciferous veggies. According to Nora Saul, RD, LDN, CDCES, registered dietitian and diabetes clinical lead at Silver Fern Healthcare, glucosinolates fight oxidative stress and protect cells by reducing free radical damage.

Radishes also contain antioxidants like vitamin C, folate, and anthocyanins, aka plant compounds that give radishes their reddish hue.

They can control blood sugar and manage diabetes.

Your body stabilizes blood sugar by producing insulin, a hormone that moves glucose from the blood and into your cells. As it turns out, the anthocyanins in radishes can lend a hand.

According to the journal Nutrients, anthocyanins improve insulin sensitivity, or how well your cells respond to insulin and take up glucose.3 Radishes also contain catechin, a compound that triggers insulin secretion.4

Additionally, “radishes provide fiber, which can help slow down digestion” of sugar from other food, says Alison Acerra, MS, RDN, registered dietitian and founder of Strategic Nutrition Design. This prevents spikes in blood sugar that, over time, can contribute to poor insulin sensitivity and diabetes.

They have essential nutrients, like vitamin C, for immune function.

Looking for tasty new ways to eat more vitamin C? One cup of raw radishes boasts 17 milligrams of this antioxidant, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. That’s about 20 percent of the daily recommended intake of 90 milligrams and 75 milligrams for men and women, respectively.

According to the journal Nutrients, vitamin C supports immune function by enhancing the activity of phagocytes, or cells that “eat” harmful germs. This key vitamin is also an antioxidant, as mentioned above, meaning it can protect cells from free radical damage.

Acerra adds that radishes contain selenium, another immune-boosting nutrient. Selenium keeps you healthy by activating T and B cells, aka white blood cells involved in your body’s immune response.

How much vitamin c you need every day

They’re full of fiber and great for digestive health.

Radishes offer a combo of soluble and insoluble fiber, which is great news for your GI tract. (Both types of fiber can make it easier to go number two.) Soluble fiber—which dissolves in water—can ease diarrhea by reducing excess fluid.

On the flip side, insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This type of fiber bulks up the stool, making it useful for relieving constipation and promoting regular bowel movements, says registered dietitian Amanda Izquierdo, MPH, RD, LDN.

They help protect your heart.

Thanks to antioxidants called anthocyanins, radishes may reduce your risk of heart disease. According to the Journal of Translational Medicine, anthocyanins protect your heart by inhibiting inflammation caused by oxidative stress.

Anthocyanins also can also reduce high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease, according to Izquierdo. Here’s how: Anthocyanins decrease inflammation in the arteries, keeping atherosclerosis at bay. Atherosclerosis is when plaque builds up in your arteries, restricting blood flow to and from your heart.

The glucosinolates in radishes offer similar heart-healthy benefits. In the body, glucosinolates break down into compounds called isothiocyanates, according to Saul. Isothiocyanates have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, further preventing atherosclerosis and protecting your heart.

They provide key minerals like calcium, iron, and potassium.

Radishes also contain small amounts of minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium—a nutrient that adds to the heart-healthy benefits mentioned above. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eating potassium-rich foods can decrease high blood pressure.

One cup of raw radishes contains 268 milligrams, which can help you reach the recommended daily intake of 3,400 milligrams and 2,600 milligrams for men and women, respectively.

Sweden women’s football team told not to shave ‘down there’ in humiliating gender test

Sweden Women squad

Swedish football player Nilla Fischer has revealed that the women’s national team were forced to strip and ‘show their genitalia’ for doctors to prove they were female at the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

‘We were told that we should not shave ”down there” in the coming days and that we will show our genitalia for the doctor,’ Fischer wrote in her new book ‘I Didn’t Even Say Half Of It’.

‘No one understands the thing about shaving but we do as we are told and think ”how did it get to this?” Should we refuse? ‘At the same time no one wants to jeopardise the opportunity to play at a World Cup. We just have to get the shit done no matter how sick and humiliating it feels.’

The Swedish centre-back opened up further on the experience in an interview with Sweden’s Aftonbladet newspaper.

‘I understand what I have to do and quickly pull down my training pants and underwear at the same time,’ she said.

‘The physio nods and says ”yup” and then looks out at the doctor who is standing with his back to my doorway. When everyone on our team is checked, that is to say, has exposed their vagina, our team doctor can sign that the Swedish women’s national football team consists only of women.’

Two weeks before the tournament got underway in Germany, FIFA released its updated gender recognition policies which remain in place today. The rules require that teams sign a declaration stating that all players involved in the tournament are of ‘the appropriate gender’.

Inspections were enforced when Nigerian, Ghanaian and South African teams protested over speculation that some of the players fielded by Equatorial Guinea may have been male.

Man United’s shares spike on New York Stock Exchange after rumour of Qatari takeover

0
Sheikh Jassim has reportedly come out on top in the race to buy Manchester United

The reason behind the major spike in Manchester United shares on New York’s Stock Exchange has been revealed.

United’s share price – which was around $12 back in November when the Glazer family announced it was to be put up for sale – is always closely monitored and a sudden spike to $25.01 caught the eye.

The spike occurred after a report from Qatari newspaper Al-Watan claimed that Sheikh Jassim has prevailed in his bidding war with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

But the Athletic are claiming that sources close to the Qatari off were taken aback by the suggestion shares soared because a deal was close.

In fact, their report goes on to detail that news of the Qatari bid sealing the deal appears to have originated from a Twitter account, said to be located in Wales, that predominantly advertises illegal streaming of football matches.

2sporttv, an account with less than 300 followers, soon saw the post, exclaiming the Qatari offer was a done deal, gain traction. It would later be promoted by Al-Watan and its editor.

While the Qatari bid could still emerge as the winner in the battle to takeover Manchester United – it is understood that reality is not as close as Al-Watan claimed.

Alarm bells were ringing for the Athletic when there was no sign of Al-Watan’s bombshell report on their website landing page.

An analysis of their Facebook page also drew a blank – viewed as an odd editorial decision given the size of the story.

The 2sporttv tweet was retweeted an amplified by the publication’s editor, leading to a deeper dive on the transparency of the account.

Brazil to play Spain friendly in anti-racism game in support of Vinicius Jr. Brazil will play Spain in a friendly in March next year as part of an anti-racism campaign in support of Vinicius Jr. The game will be played at the Bernabeu – home of Brazil winger Vinicius’ club side Real Madrid.

Vinicius was the target of racist abuse multiple times in Spain while playing for Real in the past campaign.

“There is no place for racist insults in our football,” said Spanish Football Association president Luis Rubiales.

Rubiales and Brazilian FA (CBF) counterpart Ednaldo Rodrigues launched their anti-racism campaign under the slogan “One skin”.

“It is important to understand that harder punishment needs to be applied in cases of racism by the football authorities,” said Rodrigues.

“Fines are not enough. The clubs need to be held accountable too.

“CBF was the first football federation to adopt harder sanctions for cases of racism, such as the deduction of points in league standings, closure of stands or the lifetime expulsion of club members.

“We need to lead a campaign worldwide to fight against this virus that shames everyone in football.”

Brazil play Guinea in Barcelona on Saturday and Senegal in Lisbon three days later.

absa Staff Breaks Into Customers’ Accounts … Allegedly steals GH¢1.2m from a late IGP, High Court Judge & others

1
absa

Just 16 months after being employed as a contract staff at Absa Bank Ghana – Osu Branch, 25-year-old Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie  was able to break  into customers’ accounts to  allegedly steal a whopping GH¢1,209,304.69.

The customers include; late Ernest Ako, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP) from September 30, 1974 to July 17, 1978 and late Justice Anthony Kofi Adada, a retired High Court judge.

The rest are William Joe Frimpong, Reverend Theodore Baba Hackman, Esther Marian Hackman, EkuaEwuduwaDadzie and Rev. Cynthia Patricia Asamoah.

The accused allegedly transferred funds of the customers to 17 people, including the girlfriend of the second accused (A2), Cecil NyamesemAgyarkwa.

Emmanuel (A1), together with A2, Richard Aikins (A3), Michael Tweneboah Oppong (A4), Fouad Mohammed (A5) and Caleb Bandoh (A6) were arraigned on various crimes, including stealing and conspiracy.

A1 alone is facing additional charges of forgery of other documents and falsification of accounts, bringing the total charges levelled against him to 13.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the offences and with the exception of A1, who was remanded, the rest were granted bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 each, with two sureties who are in gainful employment and earn not less than GH¢2,500 a month.

The court, presided over by Her Honour Ellen Ofei-Ayeh, on Friday ordered that the sureties deposit their Ghana Card with the Registrar of the court, while the accused persons on bail also report twice a week to the police, till the next hearing date, June 26, 2023.

However, the court was told by the Prosecuting Officer, Chief inspector Isaac Anquandah, that 11 other accused persons are on the run.

BRIEF FACTS

The prosecuting officer narrated to the court that Nana Addo Ampem-Darko, Head of Fraud Detection and Operations at Absa Bank Ghana Limited, is the complainant in the case.

According to him, A1 is a resident of Labone and until May this year, he was contracted as Processing Officer at the bank.

He added that Cecil is 26 years old and a student at University of Ghana, Richard, 31, a trader, Michael, 25, also a trader, Fouad, 32, a System Administrator and Caleb, 25, an entrepreneur.

Those at large  are; Clinton Asamoah (A7), Kwame Owusu Buadu(A8), Nicholas Nii Sai (A9), Nana Kwesi Gyimah (A10), Benjamin Adoari (A11), Daniel Osei (A12), Boadu Nana Yaw Adjei (A13), Joseph D Anim (A14), Ernest Aryee (A15), Isaac De-Heer (A16) and Othniel Amankwah Darkwa (A17).

He told the court that Al was employed by Absa bank as a contract staff in the month of February 2022 and was posted to Osu branch as a Processing Officer, whose job description was to assist customers in loan processing, T-bill processing, debit card processing, dormant account activation and customer account maintenance among others.

C/Insp Anquandah said due to Emmanuel’s job description, he worked on several accounts, including that of EkuaEwuduwaDadzie’s bonus and savings accounts.

However, somewhere in February 2023, Al registered for an online coding course, which the renewable annual subscription fee was USD 174.30, equivalent to GH¢2,287.69.

Unfortunately, instead of A1 to pay for the course out of his own pocket, he rather made the payment on Rev Cynthia Patricia Asamoah’s Visa card on February 6, 2023.

As a result, the complainant and the Fraud team of the bank were gathering evidence on the matter to engage Al, but the latter made a swift move to tender in his resignation letter, effective May 31, 2023.

The sudden resignation and the alleged illegal transaction on the customer’s visa card by A1 made the bank officials more suspicious to investigate him in other areas.

The complainant, together with the fraud team, made up of the bank’s IT experts, detected that on April 20, 2023 Al by his own machination accessed one of his colleague’s User ID and password to change the contact number on another customer, Ekua Ewuduwa Dadzie’s accounts.

So, on April 21, 2023 Al personally set up an internet and mobile banking access on Ekua Ewuduwa Dadzie’s accounts, using his own User ID and password, after which he had access and started operating on the accounts without the victim customer receiving SMS alert.

Therefore, from April 21 to May 12, 2023, Al with full access to the Ekua Ewuduwa’s account, fraudulently transferred a total of GH¢945,133.00 including charges from the accounts to a number of people.

First and foremost, he transferred GH¢90,000.00 to Cecil’s  girlfriend, Rhoda AbenaGransimaaPanyinQuansah’s Cal bank and Fidelity bank accounts; GH¢180,000.00 to Richard’s Cal bank account; GH¢30,000.00 to Michael’s Cal bank account and GH¢30,000.00 to Fouad’s GT bank account.

Caleb also received GH¢30,000.00 in his Cal bank account, Kwame  and Nicholas received GH¢30,000.00 and GH¢60,000.00 respectively in their Access bank and Fidelity bank accounts and Nana Kwesi got GH¢90,000.00 in his Cal Bank account.

Benjamin had GH¢60,000.00 in his Ecobank account, Daniel received GH¢30,000.00 in his Fidelity account, Boadu, GH¢30,000.00 his GT bank account, and Joseph, GH¢60,000.00 in his FNB account.

All of the transfers were done in tranches of GH¢30,000.00 on different dates within the said period.

On May 9, 2023 from 7:21am to 7:32am, he used another colleague and that of the branch Manageress, Felicia Mackenzie’s Users IDs to change and authorise the contact numbers of eleven customers’ accounts, including the account of late Justice Anthony Kofi Abada, former IGP, late Mr. Ernest Ako, Williams Joe Frimpong, Rev Theodora Baaba Hackman, Esther Marian Hackman and replaced them with only one contact number, 0531668674.

The prosecutor told the court that Al used eleven minutes to complete these process, after which he used his own User ID to set up online and mobile banking for these accounts on May 10, 2023.

On May 11, 2023 Al transferred GH¢50,000.00 from Esther Marian Hackman’s account to Absa account of Ernest Aryee and did the same on the next day, by transferring GH¢50,000.00 each from late Ernest Ako, Williams Joe Frimpong and Rev Theodora Baaba Hackman’s accounts to some other Absa account holders.

The receivers of the transfers were Ernest, Othniel and Isaac. The court was told that Cecil, Richard, Michael and Fouad stated in their respective investigation cautioned statements that Clinton came to their shops to purchase Iphone 14 Pro Max and requested for their bank accounts details and forwarded the same to Al to effect those fraudulent transfers into their accounts.

On May 12, 2023 Al was arrested by the Police in respect of the Visa Card theft and was granted Police enquiry bail to be reporting.

On May 15, 2023, the complainant on behalf of the bank petitioned the Director General of CID in respect of GH¢1,207,017.00 theft detected in furtherance to the Visa Card case.

Interestingly, when Al was contacted to report himself to police, he refused to show up, meanwhile, effort to compel his surety to produce him also failed.

On June 4, 2023, A1 together with his girlfriend Ivy Okertchiri, who stood as surety for him attempted to escape from the jurisdiction to Dubai, but he was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport by the Ghana Immigration Service and handed over to the police.

C/Ins Anquandah stated that investigation revealed that Al, together with his accomplices, within the period of April and May 2023, stole a total amount of GH¢1,209,304.69 from the aforementioned customers’ accounts.

He said the police are still investigating the matter to trace and arrest all the remaining accused persons as well as the proceeds of crime.

The Ghanaian Chronicle
