Amakye Dede, has named Kiki Banson as the person responsible for pressuring him into crowning Kuami Eugene as the ‘King of Future Highlife’ during a live performance at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).

This revelation comes after Amakye Dede’s earlier claims that he was coerced into the act, which garnered significant attention on social media at the time.

During an interview on Asaase Radio, Amakye Dede disclosed that initially, he even attempted to pass the crown given to him onto someone else, as he was not willing to participate.

However, in a recent interview with Abeiku Santana, the highlife veteran openly identified Kiki Banson, a popular music executive, as the mastermind behind the act.

Agya Koo

Media personality Ola Michaels has opened up on why Agya Koo was blacklisted from the movie industry. Speaking on UTV’s Showbiz Night, he submitted that they did not blacklist nor sabotage Agya Koo in the industry, however, the actor become a regular face on screen.

He mentioned that the idea was to introduce new faces to bring some variety to the audience and not as it is rumored to be.

It is not true we blacklisted Agya Koo, the idea was to introduce new faces on the scene to bring variety to the audience. This initiative paved the way for actors like Lil Win and others to shine”

“Also, Agya Koo was intentional and selective with the producers he worked with hence his slow fade in the industry”

He believes the actor’s selectiveness of roles and producers pushed him to the back because the young producers will rather cast the new faces available to them.

Multiple-award-winning afro-dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has been installed as development chief of Antiamoah in the Shama district of the Western North Region.

The gesture is in appreciation for Stonebwoy commissioning four boreholes in the district to provide accessible and potable water for the residents of Antiamoah, Beposo Nkran, Daboase Junction, and Borkor AwukuKope.

These communities faced water challenges due to mining activities which contaminated River Pra, their only source of water.

The traditional leaders who orchestrated the installation said they reached out to Stonebwoy for help, which he, under his Livingstone Foundation, provided in the shortest possible time.

“We wrote to Stonebwoy requesting help due to the lack of potable water in our community, and he quickly responded by providing four boreholes that now give us access to water, which is essential for life. Stonebwoy has given us life,” a chief of Antiamoah said.

Stonebwoy and his wife, Dr. Louisa were presented with kingship regalia including a fugu (a traditional headdress), beads, sandals, and other traditional wear.

The “Therapy” hitmaker expressed his gratitude to the chiefs and people of Antiamoah for the honour bestowed on him.

He said he was humbled by the gesture and pledged to continue to use his platform to help the less privileged.

“I am humbled by this honour and I promise to use my platform to help the less privileged in society.

I will continue to work with my foundation to provide boreholes and other amenities to communities in need,” he said.

Ghanaian musician, Kwame Yogot, has accused Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of using his music for political campaigns without his consent.

According to Kwame Yogot, the Vice President has adopted his hit song, ‘BiibiBesi’, and is played at his campaign as heard when he filed nomination for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership race.

In a viral video, Kwame Yogot expressed his displeasure and issued a warning to Dr Bawumia and his campaign team, urging them to cease using his music.

The song released in 2021 also features Kuami Eugene.

He questioned how it was possible for someone to use an artist’s music for campaign purposes without their knowledge.

Kwame Yogot emphasized the effort and cost he invested in recording the music, and the potential consequences he might face because of its unauthorized usage in campaigns.

He clarified that he does not support either the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the NPP.

Furthermore, Kwame Yogot pointed out that the NPP should not be using his music because he is the grandson of the ousted Member of Parliament for Assin North, James GyakyeQuayson, whom he claimed the party has been disrespecting and disgracing.

Mali’s military rulers hold constitutional referendum vote

Malians will vote on Sunday in a referendum on changing the constitution that the military rulers and regional powers have said will pave the way to elections and a return to civilian rule.

The military government, which seized power in coups in 2020 and 2021, promised to hold the plebiscite as part of a transition to democracy under pressure from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Voting began at 08:00 GMT and results are expected within 72 hours. Presidential elections are scheduled for February 2024.

Voter turnout is expected to be low in the country of 21 million due to armed conflict.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque said that although around 8 million Malians are eligible to vote today, “many of them will not be able to cast their ballots because there are large swathes of land in the north in the centre of the country that are in the hands of armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIL [ISIS]”.

Reporting from the capital Bamako, Haque said that in the northern city of Kidal, there is no vote taking place, and in Timbuktu, armed groups have threatened to attack polling stations.

However, he added that in Bamoko, there is “an element of defiance” and a palpable sense that “Malians really want to get their voices heard and really want to push forward in this referendum and this change in the constitution.”

Some of the changes in the committee-drafted constitution are contentious, with proponents saying they would strengthen fragile political institutions and opponents saying they would give excessive power to the president.

Uganda school attack: Dozens of pupils killed by militants linked to Islamic State group

Some of the victims died as attackers burnt a dormitory

Nearly 40 pupils have been killed at a school in western Uganda by rebels linked to the Islamic State group (IS).

Five militants attacked the Lhubiriha secondary school in Mpondwe at around 23:30 (20:30 GMT) on Friday.

They entered dormitories, setting fire and using machetes to kill and maim the pupils, officials said.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – based in the Democratic Republic of Congo – have been blamed and a manhunt is under way.

More than 60 people are educated at the school, most of whom live there.

Uganda’s information minister said 37 students were confirmed to have been killed, but did not give their ages.

Twenty of them were attacked with machetes and 17 of them burned to death, Chris Baryomunsi told the BBC.

The Ugandan army said the rebels had also killed a school guard and three members of the local community.

Survivors said the rebels threw a bomb into the dormitory after the machete attack. It is not clear if this resulted in a fire in the building which was reported earlier.

Six students were also abducted to carry food that the rebels stole from the school’s stores, he added. The militants then returned across the border into the DR Congo.

Some of the bodies are said to have been badly burnt and DNA tests will need to be carried out to identify them.

Eight people remain in a critical condition after the attack.

Two American tourists who police say were attacked – one fatally – while hiking in Germany were identified as recent graduates of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, according to the school.

Eva Liu, 21, was allegedly attacked by a 30-year-old American man she had met while hiking near one of Germany’s most popular tourist sights, Neuschwanstein Castle, on Wednesday, according to Bavarian authorities.

A friend who was with her, Kelsey Chang, 22, attempted to rescue Liu but was pushed down a steep slope. Investigators say the man then attempted to commit a “sexual offense” on Liu before he pushed her down the slope too, causing her to fall about 50 meters below her friend.

Both women were rescued by emergency responders and taken to two separate hospitals. Chang survived, but Liu later died.

Neither woman previously knew the alleged attacker, an American whose name has not been released, police say. The man had persuaded the two young women to follow him down a hidden trail leading to a viewpoint before attacking, according to police.

After fleeing the scene, he is now in police custody on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and attempted sexual offense, according to authorities.

“Our University of Illinois family is mourning the senseless death of Ms. Liu and the attack on Ms. Chang,” said Robin Kaler, associate chancellor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

“Both had just graduated in May and should have been able to celebrate such an important accomplishment without the fear of such a tragic outcome.”

Blinken holds talks with Chinese FM during high-stakes visit

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, left, shakes hands with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing at the start of the highest-level trip by a US official to China in nearly five years as the two powers aim to stabilise ties.

Blinken’s two-day trip on Sunday comes amid frosty bilateral ties and follows the discovery of a suspected spy balloon above the US in February that prompted him to delay a trip that had been planned for the same month.

With the world’s two largest economies at odds on an array of issues from trade to technology and regional security, both China and the US have voiced guarded hopes of improving communication, although they have played down expectations of a significant breakthrough.

US President Joe Biden played down the balloon episode as Blinken was heading to China, saying: “I don’t think the leadership knew where it was and knew what was in it and knew what was going on.”

“I think it was more embarrassing than it was intentional,” Biden told reporters on Saturday.

Biden said he hoped to again meet Chinese President Xi Jinping after a lengthy meeting in November on the sidelines of a Group of 20 (G20) summit in Bali, where the two agreed on Blinken’s visit.

“I’m hoping that, over the next several months, I’ll be meeting with Xi again and talking about legitimate differences we have but also how there’s areas we can get along,” Biden said.

The two leaders are likely to attend the next G20 summit, in September in New Delhi, and Xi has been invited to travel to San Francisco in November when the US hosts leaders from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) grouping.

Sudan crisis: Five children among 17 killed in air strikes

0
Nearly 1,000 civilians have been killed since the start of the conflict mid-April

Seventeen people – five children – have been killed in an air strike in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, officials say.

Twenty-five homes were destroyed in Saturday’s strike in the densely populated Yarmouk district.

It came a day after a top army general threatened to step up attacks against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF broke out mid-April as a result of a vicious power struggle within the country’s military leadership.

In early June, the RSF claimed full control of Yarmouk, an area of the capital which houses an arms manufacturing facility.

Later on Saturday the warring factions agreed a 72-hour ceasefire starting at 06:00 (04:00 GMT) on Sunday. It was announced by Saudi and US mediators. Similar ceasefires in the past have not been observed.

Precise figures on the number of people killed in the fighting are difficult to establish, but it is believed to be well over 1,000, including many civilians caught in the crossfire.

Roughly 2.2 million people have been displaced within the country and more than half a million are sheltering in neighbouring countries, according to the UN.

Several ceasefires have been announced to allow people to escape the fighting but these have not been observed.

The recent attack targeted civilians in Mayo, Yarmouk, and Mandela areas, according to the RSF. The army has not commented.

Since the hostilities began, tens of thousands of civilians have fled across the border into neighbouring Chad.

Doctors and hospitals there have been overstretched and struggling to cope.

The violence has also resurrected a two-decade-old conflict in Sudan’s western Darfur region.
