I’ve not destooled or enstooled any chief at Konongo – Juabenhene

0
Nana Otuo Serebour II - Juabenhene
Late Nana Batafo Acheampong Nti – Konongohene

Nana Otuo Serebuor II, Juabenhene, has stated that he has neither enstooled nor destooled any chief at Konongo.

The Juabenhene, who is also the Chairman of the Council of State, was reacting to a petition by Nana Obrane Frimpong, Twafohene of Konongo, and Kwame Atta Kakra, a Member of the Royal Asona Family and a nephew of the late Konongo Chief, to the Judicial Committee of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs.

The petitioners are seeking a declaration among eight other reliefs against Nana Otuo Serebuor II, Juabenhene, and Nana Oppong Agyare, Mr. Kwabena Dapaah Gyasi, and Dr. Albert Awuah Junior as co-respondents.

According to the applicants, their right to be heard was breached, and that the May 31, 2022 meeting at Juaben, presided over by Nana Otuo Serebuor, was not the appropriate legal forum to determine matters affecting the status of chiefs in the Juaben Traditional Council under the 1992 Constitution and the Chieftaincy Act.

They also sought a declaration that no person had the jurisdiction and authority to make destoolment charges against a deceased chief, who was never charged or tried in his lifetime; a declaration that the purported destoolment of the late Konongohene and his sub-chiefs was null and void and of no legal and customary effect.

The petitioners called for an order to set aside the unlawful act of the declaration of destoolment of the deceased, Nana Batafo Acheampong Nti II, and his sub-chiefs and the consequential orders.

According to the petitioners, the Juabenhene could not destool posthumously a recognised and gazetted chief, who reigned from May 1981 to January 15, 2022, and should be accorded all the royal rites and protocols as a late chief.

But Nana Otuo Serebour, first respondent, in response to the petition, as filed by K.A. Asante-Krobea Esq. of Asante-Krobea, Sekyere and Associates of Kumasi on behalf of the respondents, said he had not destooled any chief of Konongo.

He also stated that he had not destooled the late Konongohene 30 years ago, as claimed, and explained that the late Konongohene did not recognise him as the Overlord all these 30 years.

The Juabenhene further explained that he did not customarily know the sub-chiefs who called at his palace on May 31, 2022, in the company of the Omanhene of Bekwai, to plead with him to accord royal courtesies for the burial and funeral of the late Konongohene.

Nana Otuo Serebuor also stated that since the late Konongohene did not recognise him (Juabenhene), he could not be part of any arrangements for his burial and funeral celebrations.

With regards to the purported installation of the fourth respondent as the Chief of Konongo under the stool name of Nana Dr. Awuah Abedimsa II on August 22, 2022, the petitioners sought the order of the Judicial Committee of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs to nullify the said installation.

In the petition filed on October 17, 2022 by Augustine Opoku Esq. of Dwumfuor and Dwumfuor Chambers on behalf of the petitioners, they contended that the installation of Dr. Awuah on August 22, 2022 at Juaben in the Ashanti Region was a nullity and wrong, and the purported destoolment of the late Konongohene was arbitrary.

They asked for the process for nomination and installation to be restarted because the installation of Dr. Awuah on August 22, 2022 as Konongohene was not customary.

They claimed without the involvement of the Konongo kingmakers the nomination and installation of Dr. Awuah, the fourth defendant, as Chief of Konongo was a nullity.

But the Juabenhene responded, stating that Nana Dr. Awuah Abedimsa II had been customarily and lawfully enstooled as the Chief of Konongo in accordance with Akan custom and nuances for making a chief.

The respondents have, therefore, stated that the petition in question, as it relates to the Juabenhene, was incompetent.

NPP’s imposition of PCs still going strong

OPINION

There is one thing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lacks, but which the National Democratic Congress (NDC) exhibits beautifully, and it is Unity of Purpose. Check: During election campaigning, once the NDC selects a parliamentary candidate, even if in the midst of barbaric conducts, the whole party will unite behind the chosen one and fight hard for him or her to win the seat.

This is quite different in the NPP, where even before the constituents decide on who is to lead the party in the constituency, powers that be may go and handpick someone and impose him or her on the noble party faithful.

One will hear of statements like, this one is the preferred choice from the presidency and so he or she is the one to go. Meanwhile the party faithful on the ground prefer someone else.

This breeds confusion and division and when the powers that be have their way, there is the likelihood that the party could lose the seat, out of apathy or angered NPP members voting against the chosen one.

It is even more bizarre when the parliamentary candidate is not preferred by the powers that be.

There have been occasions when the constituency chairman would go further to destroy candidate to the regional chairman and other executives. The regional chairman would also go on to destroy the candidate to the national chairman who would further demolish the candidate to the presidential candidate.

There is possibly one instance when the presidential candidate was forced not to visit that candidate’s constituency to campaign.

And there was one instance, at least, when due to a sacred vow the constituency chairman took, that over his dead body, would that candidate win the seat, during the collation of results at the poling stations, some loyalists of the chairman who were polling agents, were made to collect some of the votes that should have gone to their party’s candidate and gift them to the NDC candidate.

One stupid way of settling scores because as the votes were being deducted from the NPP candidate same were deducted from the presidential candidate.

Such very demoralising behaviour where NPP will attack NPP is what sunk the party to attain 137 seats in Parliament, with the NDC getting 137 as well. And a candidate whom was attacked by his party but decided to stand independent, won his seat and now sits at table with the NPP in Parliament.

The story of imposition worked against the Party in all the regions and many were those who had the hope that such irresponsible conduct will not be repeated in 2024. The belief was so until the story of Sege Constituency in the Greater Accra hit the headlines.

First, a story broke, that the immediate past parliamentary candidate had been suspended by the constituency executive committee due to insubordination. No further indicting reasons were given.

The past candidate, Eunice Lasi, had this to say. The constituency executives presented another person, as the choice from Jubilee House who was going to become the next parliamentary candidate.

Then the constituency organized a health walk of which Eunice was invited and she respectfully attended. It was during the walk that the agenda was revealed to her. The choice of Jubilee House dressed in NPP royal robes was going to be installed as the new PC at the end of the walk.

Eunice knew the intention of the constituency executives. She was made to join the coronation of her successor when nothing has been discussed with her. She would be made to sit down while the constituency executives presented the new guy as the official PC for the constituency.

Eunice Lasi quickly organised another set of brass band and it sung to her glorification. And this was where the constituency executive took great offense and suspended her.

That the NPP has never won in Sege, should be the more reason why care must be taken not to create electoral apathy among party faithful there, so that the party’s presidential votes are well protected.

Looking at Eunice’s performance in the 2020 elections, it is obvious that she could be that person who could snatch the seat from the NDC for the first time.

In 2004 when the constituency was created, NDC candidate won 54.9% of the valid votes cast with NPP getting 16.7%. In 2008, the NDC secured 79.55% with NPP getting 18.48%; in 2016, the NDC won with 55.75% and NPP had 43.15%. In 2016, the NDC won with 53.48% and 1,927 votes difference against NPP’s 45.71%.

Eunice entered the race in 2020 the NDC candidate secured 52.50% and 1,792 votes difference against the NPP’s 47.05%.

In Sege, the current Regional Chairman, Divine Agorhom, contested the seat thrice rising from 18.48% in 2008 to 45.71% by 2016. This remarkable feat was increased as Eunice clocked 47.05% to edge closer to the 50% +1, mark.

And just as the party allowed Chairman Agorhom to contest the seat thrice, if Eunice is allowed that privilege, maybe she could snatch the seat for the party.

Unfortunately, someone thinks there should be another and this can create serious division with the result of the Party losing miserably.

The National Executive Committee must quickly look into the Sege case, or many of such cases will erupt all over the country and NPP will be the loser.

Primate Elijah Ayodele

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has revealed that Nigeria’s economy needs prayers to survive the hardship it is currently in.

Primate Ayodele said the floating of naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, is not the best for the revival of the Nigerian economy, adding that despite the hopes the policy offers, the economy will still not be in good shape.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, the man of God explained that the floating of the naira was a wrong step by President Bola Tinubu and will further lead to economic troubles as prices of commodities will also skyrocket.

For the ordinary Nigerians, Primate Ayodele made it known that the policy will not have a positive impact on them as the hardship will continue to bite harder as a result of the policy.

He further urged President Tinubu to look inward to tackle the country’s problems, otherwise, Nigerians will continue to suffer.

According to Ayodele: ‘’Nigeria’s economy still needs prayers to survive, the floating of the naira isn’t what the country needs at the moment.

“Even if it offers hope at the moment, it will lead to economic hardship and disappointment for the nation. Nothing will be appreciated, the country needs prayers because we are in economic shambles.

“We will experience a lot of economic setup and the prices of commodities will increase.

‘’The ordinary Nigerians will not benefit from this policy, they will still have to experience a tougher economic conditions. It is not the best idea”.

Tinubu’s advisory council recommends sale of assets to settle Nigeria’s debt obligations

President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu’s Policy Advisory Council has proposed the sale of Nigeria’s assets to settle existing federal government debt obligations.

The advisory council, put together by Mr Tinubu to support the delivery of sustainable and inclusive economic growth, consists of Tokunbo Abiru (chair), Yemi Cardoso, Sumaila Zubairu and Doris Anite, with KPMG listed as the consultant.

The council called on Tinubu’s administration to set a policy directive that all proceeds from the sale of assets must be used to settle the existing federal government’s debt obligations.

Other fiscal recommendations, according to the council, include listing the shares of strategic and profitable Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) subsidiaries, leveraging blockchain to create and provide access to a government land registry and regionalising and concessioning the power transmission grid.

The council also recommends privatising, concession or selling down the federal government’s stake in corporate assets to partners and other investors (possibly with a buyback option) to generate liquidity in short to medium term, with a focus on sub-optimal assets such as NNPCL refineries.
