APM opens, closes case in petition against Tinubu’s presidential victory

0
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) on Wednesday opened and closed its case in its petition challenging the declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.

The party in the petition numbered CA/PEPC/04/2023 seeks the nullification of Tinubu’s election on the ground of the double nomination of the vice presidential candidate of the APC, Kashim Shettima.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, after a futile attempt by President Tinubu and the APC to shut out the petition, the petitioner called its lone witness, Aisha Abubakar, who gave evidence in aid of the petition.

Led in evidence by the lead counsel to the APM, Gideon Idiagbonya, the witness identified and tendered the five witness statements on oath she deposed to at the registry of the court.

The witness, who is the Assistant Welfare Officer of the APM, also tendered her membership card as evidence in the matter.

Other documents tendered by the petitioner and admitted as exhibits by the court are the declaration of results sheet (Form EC8E), a notice of withdrawal of Kabiru Masari as vice presidential candidate of APC, and Kashim Shettima’s notice of withdrawal as Borno Central senatorial candidate of APC (Form EC11C).

Also tendered are the letter of voluntary withdrawal written to APC by Shettima as senatorial candidate of APC for Borno Central senatorial district, an affidavit in support of personal particulars for nominations of Shettima as the vice presidential candidate of APC (Form EC9), an affidavit of personal particulars for nominations of Ibrahim Kabiru Masari as Vice Presidential candidate of APC (Form EC9), and an affidavit in support of personal particulars for nominations of Lawal Kaka Shehu as Borno Central Senatorial candidate of APC.

Following a subpoena, INEC, through its Deputy Director, Legal Drafting, Joan Molle Arabs, produced two documents, Certified True Copies of an online temporary acknowledgement of Kashim Shettima’s profile of Thursday, July 14, 2022, and an online temporary acknowledgement of Lawal Kaka Shehu’s profile of Friday, July 15, 2022, which were tendered and admitted as exhibits by the court.

At the end of the cross-examination of the witness by INEC, APC, Tinubu, Kashim Shettima, and Kabiru Masari, who are respondents in the petition, counsel to the petitioner announced the closure of the case.

The respondents, through their counsel, did not call evidence in the petition but relied on the May 26, 2023, judgement of the Supreme Court and a letter notifying INEC of the withdrawal of Shettima as a senatorial candidate of the APC for Borno Central senatorial district tendered by counsel to INEC, Dr Kemi Pinhero (SAN).

The Supreme Court judgement, which was tendered in evidence by counsel to the APC, Lateef Fagbemi, dismissed a suit by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the February 25 presidential election on the ground of the double nomination of his running mate for lacking merit.

The petitioner raised objections to the admissibility of the said judgement, but the court admitted it as evidence, and after the conclusion of the cross-examination of the witness, the court gave the petitioner 10 days within which to file and serve its final written address and gave the respondents seven days to file and serve their final written addresses in the petition.

The court then fixed July 14, 2023, for the adoption of the final written addresses of the parties in the petition.

Meanwhile, the court could not hear the petition filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging Tinubu’s election because the 10 am scheduled for the petition was encroached upon by the APM petition, which was the first matter called on Wednesday.

Consequently, the five-member panel of justices of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani adjourned further hearings of Atiku Abubakar and PDP’s petition until July 22.

A gentle reminder to Edna Nyame about her promise to complete Tadi CNC in a year

0
Janet Edna Nyame, Executive Director for the National Commission on Culture

“AESL who are the consultants have given us the budget and roadmap to the completion of the CNCs. Maximum two months, you’ll see works on the CNC in Takoradi,” this was a promise from the Executive Director for National Commission on Culture, Janet Edna Nyame to the people of Takoradi on 14th June, 2022.

In an interview with Empire FM in Takoradi, Madam Nyame was confident that, within a year, the issue of the deserted Centre for National Culture (CNC) will be a thing of the past and the people of Takoradi will appreciate the long wait for the renovation.

Today’s date is 22nd June, 2023, not a single working tool has touched the ground of Takoradi CNC. The building is rather deteriorating than before. The obvious cracks in the walls make it more dangerous to accommodate anyone for an event.

It is shocking that there has not been any work at the centre which is the only viable venue for events in the Oil City even when the Executive Director has openly assured the people of Takoradi.

The promise by the woman who is eyeing the Takoradi Constituency Parliamentary seat follows a bold promise by her sector minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mohammed Awal to the people of the Takoradi to see a major facelift of the facility.

In the company of the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, the Tourism Minister who visited the venue assured the people of Takoradi that he is committed to making sure that the edifice is renovated to the state of the art status within a year which was due on June 5, 2022.

Janet Edna Nyame took the baton from her sector Minister and watered the promise by further assuring the people of Takoradi that, “as someone from the Metropolis, I am embarrassed anytime the discussion of the CNC in Takoradi comes up, knowing that, it has been deserted for over 30 years so as the head of the sector in charge of the CNC, my region should have been the first to witness the best of CNCs in Ghana so I am committed to it.”

“Awal Mohammed has promised to finish at least two of the centres before he leaves office. He mentioned Western Region and Northern Region so he is committed to his promise to the people of Western Region.

He has not abandoned the promise even though it has delayed” Madam Nyame in an interview with Empire FM in 2022 stated, adding that, it will not go beyond a year for the people of Takoradi to witness the fully renovated CNC.

Industry players in the Twin City are reminding the National Commission on Culture boss of her promise to them a year ago and need answers for the failed promise.

It is unclear the delay of work as no one at the Commission is willing to talk to The Chronicle when this Reporter contacted the office.

Duncan-Williams’ son wanted to marry me but … – Yvonne Nelson

Joel Duncan Williams and Yvonne Nelson

In her memoir titled, ‘I am not Yvonne Nelson,’ the Actress talked about masculinity and female marginalisation in a chapter dubbed, ‘A Man’s World.’

In a revelation, the Actress spoke about Joel Duncan-Williams, the son of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams who approached her with a marriage proposal in a rather dramatic way that ended before it even started.

According to Yvonne, their paths crossed in the year 2009. She writes; “In 2009, while I was on set shooting The Prince’s, I received a visitor. He was not my visitor, as he had come to see someone else. However, by the end of his visit, I turned out to matter more to him than the person he had come to see.

This visitor, if I should call him that because of the retinue of security guards he moved with, derived his influence from the surname he carried. His name is Joel Duncan-Williams, the son of the founder and leader of Action Faith Chapel International, Archbishop Duncan-Williams. Until that day, I hadn’t known or heard about him, but I couldn’t fail to notice his imposing presence when he showed up. Before he left the movie set, he said he had fallen in love with me.”

The son of the Action Chapel International went the extra mile to prove the seriousness of his love by bringing her lunch on set accompanied by his heavy security escort in a mini-convoy.

“While I was still unsure of what to tell him, his plans for marriage were far advanced. But something abruptly ended our friendship before it had the slimmest probability of developing further.

He paid me a visit one evening with the usual princely entourage that I had only seen in movies featuring non-state officials.

When the howling of his motorcade’s siren had adequately announced to the neighborhood that an important somebody had arrived at my household, he came in and announced his plans. He said that before the marriage could proceed, I had to go to his father to be prayed for.

The purpose of that prayer was to ensure that any demons or evil spirits present in me or my family line would be cast out,” she narrated.

“In my head, I asked whether he didn’t think my mother also needed to pray to cast out any potential bad spirits in him. Being the son of Archbishop Duncan-Williams didn’t necessarily mean he was inhabited by the Holy Spirit and guarded by angels.

And who told him that being an actress meant that I was a harbinger of malevolent spirits? At least, those who lived in our area would testify that the Manovia household used to be one of the most religious households around” Miss Nelson added

“I Am Not Yvonne Nelson” is an explosive and riveting account of a young woman who sets out to discover herself but finds out that she has been living with a false identity.

French firefighters put out a fire after a building partly collapsed

At least 16 people have been injured, seven of whom are in a critical condition, after a gas explosion sparked a blaze in buildings in the Latin quarter of Paris.

The gas explosion happened in the fifth arrondissement at about 5pm on Wednesday and resulted in several buildings catching fire, local officials said.

Laurent Nunez, the Paris police chief, said the explosion happened at 277 rue Saint-Jacques inside a building that includes the Paris American Academy, a bilingual school of fashion and design.

Police told people to avoid the Val-de-Grâce area, near the Pantheon and Luxembourg Gardens, after the facade of a building collapsed and the fire appeared to have spread to neighbouring buildings.

Local people described one powerful explosion and a smaller one. One man told France Info public radio: “It was shocking. It’s a disaster.”

Some reported a huge plume of smoke rising above the neighbourhood.

Armed Israeli settlers attack Palestinian town in revenge attack

Hundreds of Israeli settlers attacked Turmus Ayya

A large group of Israeli settlers have attacked a Palestinian town in the occupied West Bank, setting fire to homes, cars and fields in a revenge rampage that left one Palestinian dead from gunfire and 10 others injured, according to Palestinian witnesses and officials.

Many of the hundreds of settlers who raided the town of Turmus Ayya, north of Ramallah, on Wednesday were armed.

But the dead man, Omar Abu Katan, 27, was shot by Israeli soldiers who entered after the settlers, Palestinian medics said. According to a Palestinian Authority official, Ghassan Daghlas, the 10 wounded were struck by live shots, some fired by soldiers and others by settlers. About 30 houses and over 40 cars were torched, he said

The attack reinforced questions from rights groups who accuse the military of enjoying a cosy relationship with settlers to the point of doing little to fulfil its international legal obligation of protecting civilians.

The Turmus Ayya onslaught was part of a day of settler attacks in the northern West Bank in reprisal for the killing by Hamas gunmen on Tuesday of four settlers at a restaurant and petrol station outside the Eli settlement.

Sudan’s warring sides resume fighting after ceasefire ends

Intense battles have broken out between Sudan’s military and a rival paramilitary force after a three-day ceasefire expired. The truce – brokered by the United States and Saudi Arabia – ended on Wednesday at 6am (04:00 GMT). The ceasefire brought relative calm to Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, but fierce fighting was reported on Tuesday night in parts of the city.

Residents said clashes centred around the intelligence agency’s headquarters near Khartoum International Airport.

Sudan descended into chaos in mid-April after months of rising tensions exploded into open fighting between rival generals seeking to control the country.

The war pits the military, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a militia-turned-paramilitary force commanded by Mohamed “Hemedti” Hamdan Dagalo.

A fire engulfed the intelligence service’s headquarters in Khartoum on Tuesday night as each side accused the other of attacking it.

Zelensky admits slow progress in Ukraine offensive

Ukraine's leader said people's lives were at stake in the counter-offensive

President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged battlefield progress has been “slower than desired”, weeks into Ukraine’s military offensive to recapture areas occupied by Russia.

“Some people believe this is a Hollywood movie and expect results now. It’s not,” he told the BBC. What’s at stake is people’s lives.”

Ukraine says its counter-offensive has reclaimed eight villages so far in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk to the east.

Mr Zelensky said the military push was not going easily because 200,000 sq km (77,220 sq miles) of Ukrainian territory had been mined by Russian forces.

“Whatever some might want, including attempts to pressure us, with all due respect, we will advance on the battlefield the way we deem best,” Mr Zelensky added.

He reinforced the need for Ukraine to be given security guarantees from Nato but said ultimately the goal was membership of the defensive alliance.

Nato’s secretary general made clear this week that no plan was on the table to issue an invitation to Ukraine at next month’s summit in Lithuania.

“[Jens] Stoltenberg knows my position,” the Ukrainian leader said “We’ve told them numerous times: ‘Don’t knock the ground from under our feet.'”

Biden calls Xi a dictator a day after US-China talks

US President Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has called Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator at a fundraising event in California.

His remarks came a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Mr Xi for talks in Beijing, which were aimed at easing tensions between the two superpowers.

Mr Biden also said Mr Xi was embarrassed after an alleged Chinese spy balloon was shot down by the US.

China said it “firmly opposes” Mr Biden’s comments.

“The reason why Xi Jinping got very upset, in terms of when I shot that balloon down with two box cars full of spy equipment in it, was he didn’t know it was there,” Mr Biden said at the event on Tuesday.

“That’s a great embarrassment for dictators. When they didn’t know what happened,” he added.

The balloon, which China says was monitoring weather, drifted across the continental US before being destroyed by American military aircraft in February.

Washington later said it was part of a sprawling Chinese intelligence collection programme. Mr Blinken, who was meant to visit Beijing at the time, postponed the trip in the wake of the incident. China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called Mr Biden’s remarks “extremely absurd and irresponsible”.

Is Sour Cream Healthy? Nutrients and Benefits

0
Sour cream

Sour cream is made by fermenting cream from dairy milk with lactic acid bacteria. This rich, slightly tart condiment is often used as a topping for tacos and baked potatoes, or to thicken baked goods, sauces, and stews.

Yet, many people wonder whether it can be included in a healthy diet.

This article explains whether sour cream is healthy, exploring its nutrients, benefits, and drawbacks.

Sour cream nutrition facts

Sour cream contains many essential nutrients, but serving sizes tend to be small. Thus, it doesn’t usually offer significant amounts of any nutrient.

As you can see, regular sour cream is fairly high in fat and calories.

Reduced fat sour cream has a similar nutrient profile but with fewer calories and about 38% less fat.

Meanwhile, fat-free sour cream is made with skim milk and additives like food starch and gums so that it maintains a creamy consistency. Its lack of fat reduces the calorie count by about 60% compared with regular, though it may have slightly more carbs depending on the brand.

Because sour cream is primarily a garnish, it isn’t typically eaten in the same volume as other dairy products like yogurt or milk.

Plus, since other dairy products are made with all milk components — not just the cream — they provide significantly more protein, carbs, vitamins, and minerals than regular sour cream.

Sour cream isn’t a significant source of nutrients in most diets, as it’s eaten in such small quantities. Regular sour cream is fairly high in fat and calories.

Potential health benefits of sour cream

Although you shouldn’t rely on sour cream as a primary source of nutrients, it may still support your health in several ways.

May promote absorption of fat-soluble vitamins

Certain vitamins require a source of fat to be absorbed most effectively in your digestive tract.

Known collectively as fat-soluble vitamins, they include vitamins A, D, E, and K. Deficiencies in these vitamins are associated with diseases like diabetes, cancer, and immune disorders.

Fat-soluble vitamins are found in a variety of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, but not all of them provide fat on their own. Thus, eating them with a source of fat may enhance your body’s absorption.

Regular sour cream is primarily composed of fat.

Some varieties contain probiotics

Probiotics are live microbes that provide various health benefits, such as improved digestion and immune function, when consumed.

Sour cream is traditionally made by fermenting dairy cream with lactic acid bacteria, which are one of the most common probiotics in food production. Thus, certain types of sour cream may offer probiotic benefits.

Yet, most commercial sour cream is pasteurized to lower the risk of food poisoning, meaning that any live bacteria are destroyed before they make it into the final product.

However, some brands, such as Nancy’s, add these microorganisms back into their sour cream after pasteurization so that you can still reap probiotic benefits.

You can also try fermenting your own sour cream at home.

Low in carbs

Although nothing is inherently wrong with carbs, low carb diets are quite popular.

Thus, many people may be pleased to know that regular sour cream is compliant with a variety of low carb diets, including keto and Atkins.

Sour cream may help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and some types harbor probiotics to boost your digestion and immune health.

Potential downsides of sour cream

Bear in mind that sour cream has its fair share of drawbacks.

High in saturated fat

Saturated fat is the predominant fat in sour cream. In fact, about half of the calories in regular sour cream come from saturated fat.

Excess intake of saturated fat may cause some people to produce more LDL (bad) cholesterol. If these levels become too high, your risk of heart disease may increase over time.

Moreover, evidence suggests that replacing saturated fats with unsaturated ones from foods like nuts, seeds, olives, and fish may reduce your risk of heart disease.

The American Heart Association recommends limiting your intake of saturated fat to 5–6% of your daily calories, or about 11–13 grams for someone who follows a 2,000-calorie diet.

There’s plenty of room within these guidelines to eat sour cream, but it’s still a good idea to limit your intake and vary the sources and types of fat in your diet.

Not appropriate for all diets

Since sour cream is made from cow’s milk, it doesn’t work for all diets.

You should avoid it if you have an allergy to cow’s milk or intolerance to lactose, the sugar found in milk.

Moreover, sour cream is inappropriate for anyone following a vegan or dairy-free diet.

Sour cream is high in saturated fat and should only be eaten in moderation. It’s not suitable for anyone following a dairy-free diet.

Can it affect your weight?

When eaten in moderation, sour cream is unlikely to have any major effects on your body weight and may even boost weight loss. Yet, excessive amounts may do the opposite.

Weight loss

Evidence indicates that routine dairy intake may promote weight loss.

A 2016 review of 27 studies associated 2–4 daily servings of dairy as part of a calorie-restricted diet with greater total weight and fat loss than diets with little or no dairy.

Moreover, fats — such as those found in sour cream — help slow stomach emptying, which may make you feel full and more satisfied at mealtimes. In turn, this may lead you to eat fewer calories.

Weight gain

Keep in mind that over consuming any food — sour cream or otherwise — may result in weight gain.

If your sour cream habit is consistently causing you to ingest more calories than you burn each day, weight gain is entirely possible.

Because sour cream is a calorie-dense food, it may be easy to eat too much.

Should you eat it?

At the end of the day, it’s up to you whether to include sour cream in your diet. Although it’s perfectly healthy, eating too much may be detrimental.

Moderate sour cream intake isn’t bad for you. In some cases, it may even help you eat more nutrient-dense foods like veggies and legumes. For instance, you might use sour cream as a base for a veggie dip or add a dollop to a plate of black bean and veggie nachos.

Conversely, if you find yourself eating sour cream often or in large servings, you may be exceeding your target calorie intake. If this is the case, it may not be the best choice for you.
