Malaysia detains Chinese ship suspected of looting British WW2 wrecks

The China-registered bulk carrier detained for anchoring illegally in Malaysia's waters

Malaysia has detained a Chinese-registered vessel suspected of looting two British World War Two shipwrecks. The bulk carrier was seized on Sunday for anchoring illegally at the site in the South China Sea. Ammunition believed to be from the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse, which were sunk by Japanese forces more than 80 years ago, was then found on board.

The UK Ministry of Defence had earlier condemned the alleged raid as a “desecration” of maritime war graves.

Old shipwrecks are targeted by scavengers for their rare low-background steel, also known as “pre-war steel”. The low radiation in the steel makes it a rare and valuable resource for use in medical and scientific equipment.

The British vessels, on the bed of the ocean some 100km (60 miles) off the east coast of Malaysia, had been targeted for decades.

The Royal Navy battleships were dispatched to Singapore during the war to shore up the defence of Malaya. They were sunk by Japanese torpedoes on 10 December 1941.

The strike – which occurred just three days after the attack on the US fleet in Pearl Harbour – killed some 842 sailors and is considered one of the worst disasters in British naval history.

Large-scale drone attack hits Moscow for first time in Ukraine war

Drone attack hits Moscow

Moscow has been targeted with a large-scale drone attack for the first time in its 15-month-old war in Ukraine, marking a new inflection point in a conflict that the Kremlin said would never threaten the lives of ordinary Russians.

Russia continues to pummel Ukraine with deadly missile and drone strikes on a near-daily basis. Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, faced its third air raid in 24 hours on Tuesday morning.

Video posted on social media early on Tuesday showed one low-flying drone exploding in a field outside Moscow, and others flying over houses in the city’s expensive Rublyovka district or tower flats in south-west neighbourhoods. Another video from Moscow’s outskirts showed a Pantsir surface-to-air missile system firing at a target nearby.

The Russian defence ministry said eight drones targeted the city overnight. In a television appearance on Tuesday, Putin praised Moscow’s air defences and said Kyiv was trying to scare Russians by striking civilian targets.

At least one of the drones appears to have been a Ukrainian-manufactured UJ 22, produced by the Ukrjet company.

Why you should exercise in the morning to lose weight …and in the afternoon if you have diabetes

0

Every year, millions of us commit to a new exercise regimen, seeking a quick way to trim our waistlines.

But what if the secret to burning fat effectively is not merely exercising, but when we choose to work out?

Scientists are increasingly finding that the circadian rhythm — i.e. our internal body clock — within each of our tissues plays an important role in how efficiently they perform at different times of the day.

For example, research suggests athletes tend to perform best in the late afternoon and early evening.

When Dutch sports scientists examined the performances of swimmers at the Athens, Beijing, London and Rio Olympics, they found they achieved their fastest times at around 5pm. It’s thought these principles hold true for all of us.

Scientists are beginning to learn how all tissues and organs have their own unique schedules in accordance with fluctuations of different hormones.

For while our muscles are at their most powerful and flexible later in the day, new research demonstrates that we can burn fat more efficiently when we exercise in the morning.

Professor Zierath says there are thousands of genes which produce enzymes that help convert fat stored in cells into the energy we use when we exercise. And it seems these genes are at their most active in the morning.

So while you may not be at your strongest and quickest then, it is the best period for losing weight.

In a recent study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Professor Zierath and colleagues investigated this for the first time, using mice.

They found that when the mice exercised on a treadmill in the first three hours after waking, their body fat showed much higher levels of the enzymes used to metabolise fat.

When they did the same amount of exercise much later in the day, there were far lower levels of these enzymes.

Scientists suspect the body’s preference for burning fat after morning exercise is linked to the natural pattern of hormones called glucocorticoids, which control how the body maintains and accumulates fat.

Glucocorticoids are found throughout the body, most notably in fat tissue. Their natural pattern is to peak around 8am, which gets us moving and switches on our appetites, before reaching their lowest level around 3am when we are fast asleep.

Exercising in the morning fits nicely with this daily cycle, as glucocorticoid levels are already raised, and so the body does not generate any additional fat cells.

However, if we exercise in the evening, this causes a surge of glucocorticoids, triggering the body to produce new fat cells to replace some of the ones you have just burnt, minimising the benefit to your waistline.

This may help explain why shift workers are more prone to weight gain: their nocturnal patterns of being stressed and active cause big surges in glucocorticoids at times when the body would normally be asleep, leading to more fat cells being created.

And as a result, shift workers are more likely to gain weight compared with people who have normal circadian patterns, even if they eat a similar number of calories a day.

This is the consequence of evolution, explains Dr Mary Teruel, an associate professor of biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, and a world-leading expert on glucocorticoids. She points to how our bodies have developed around a pattern of being awake during the day and asleep at night.

‘Fat is strongly influenced by hormones,’ says Dr Teruel. ‘If the levels of glucocorticoids are disrupted, that has a huge effect on fat.

‘If you exercise later, these hormones start being secreted to a much greater extent in the evening, which isn’t good,’ she explains.

‘Your body wants to rest at this time, and if you pump it up it’s equivalent to staying up really late and not sleeping.’

Instead, Dr Teruel suggests that a morning workout, no matter the length or type of exercise, will yield greater benefits for losing weight.

However, working out post-lunch can have different benefits. Professor Zierath says your blood sugar will be more stable if you exercise in the afternoon — meaning it’s the best time for people who either have type 2 diabetes or are at risk of developing it.

This is important because if your blood sugar fluctuates too much, the excess sugar starts to be stored as fat.

Feature: Of Messages And Messengers

Nkrabeah Effah-Dartey

According to recorded history, at the peak of Asanteman glory, circa 1800 JAMAN was one of their tributary states. Their chief Nana Adinkra made a golden stool for himself and the Asantehene Osei Bonsu sent and collected the golden stool to Kumasi.

Resentment and rebellion broke out in Jaman and Nana Adinkra was nearly destooled. Urged on and led by his own sister, the Queen Mother, ASUAMA, another golden stool was carved out of pure gold for Nana Adinkra and this time round Otumfuo Osei Bonsu sent a very arrogant pompous chief, ANANTA HENE as leader of a delegation to Jaman, to retrieve the golden stool.

Nana Adinkra convened a big durbar and it was chaotic. Speaker after speaker condemned the Asante delegation and Nana Adinkra ordered that each of the five man delegation should be DECAPITATED immediately.

Killing a messenger does not mean killing the message. Otumfuo could not sit in Kumasi with this violent insult to his majesty. He took three years to mass up an imperial Army of 200,000 troops and invaded JAMAN. Historians call that war as ADINKRA WAR. Nana Adinkra committed suicide before Asante troops could capture him.

Reader, we practicing lawyers are glorified messengers of our clients to advance their interests in Court.

I was in my office when Valentine Nana Agyeiwaa popularly known as AFIA SCHWARZENEGGER called me: “Captain, lawyer Maurice Ampaw says I have sex with dogs – I want you to sue him”. “Come to the office, Afia…..”

She came, and after listening to her I wrote a “Demand Notice” to the lawyer, for a fee, which Afia paid.

On her instructions, I went to Tema High Court accompanied by two of my junior lawyers, and told the Court that Applicant chairman Wontumi was not in Court, his lawyer was not in Court, we have not been served with any application, so my lord, strike out the application with costs, which was done.

Two or three radio stations called me and asked me questions on this matter including Kwame Nkrumah Tekesse’s OKAY FM and I said just this, no more no less.

My elder brother timber merchant Ernest Kwame Apraku is dead so I left Accra Thursday for Berekum for the One Week. I was even asleep in the car returning to Accra on Sunday night when a good Samaritan called me:

“Captain what have you done that Maurice Ampaw is castigating you like that on Wontumi TV?

Next morning a friend sent me transcript of the effusions by Maurice Ampaw and I listened and listened over and over again……. should I reply him?

He said he has a platform, so he is warning me, if I am a man this and that………unfortunately I am just a court going lawyer. I am not a journalist, I have no platform, I am just a freelance writer. Editors choose at their pleasure to publish what I write. I bow to you, Maurice Ampaw. You are privileged to have a slot on Wontumi TV.

Just because I went to the High Court to render a professional service for a client you lambast me that I am a failure in this and failure in that?

You said I was a failure as a soldier, made a coup……. As a lawyer you should CHECK your FACTS.

I enlisted as a soldier on 2nd November 1977 in Intake 20 and after two weeks training at Teshie during which I was Steeple Chase champion. I was sent to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst UK where I was given the Best Overseas Cadet Award in RCC 17-1978.

When I got back as Lieutenant I served in Michel Camp, served as ADC to Army Commander General Quainoo and saw action in Lebanon where I built NKRABEAH WALL in F-14 at KafrDunin.

I was arrested by military Intelligence for planning a coup and charged with military equivalent of TREASON which is MUTINY. I had no lawyer to defend me at the General Court Martial but even so I was acquitted and discharged at the level of SUBMISSION OF NO CASE by the General Court Martial presided over by group Captain J A Kotei. I was convicted of MISCONDUCT and jailed.

I was in prison for 11 months, and released by the coup on 31st December 1981. J J Rawlings for his own reasons arrested and detained me without any trial for 6 months, promoted me CAPTAIN while I was in prison and compulsorily released me from the Ghana Army. Is that a profile of a failed soldier?

Did you say I am a failure in law?

I was called to the Bar in 1986 and God has kept me on my feet all these 37 years. The incoming Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo is my mate at the Ghana Law School and the current Attorney General is my junior at the Bar by over 10 years.

By the Grace of God I am the head of my own law firm with 15 active daily Court going lawyers, operating from a three storey building at Asylum Down as our chambers.

Is this the profile of a failed lawyer?

You said I am a failed politician.

As MP for Berekum, I was very actin in Parliament debates, with my face on TV several times speaking on the floor of Parliament. I was in regular touch with all the 36 communities in Berekum Constituency, going there at least once every two weeks.

I have no doubt in my mind that if NPP were to be selecting Parliamentary Candidate by every card bearing member voting in the Primaries instead of the money – crazy delegates concept like I would be MP for Berekum for a very long time.

As Deputy Minister for Local Government and Interior I visited every district in Ghana, constantly in touch with the people, with my boss Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, my mate at Legon.

Peter Ala Adjetey’s Vetting Committee erroneously disqualified me from contesting for NPP Flagbearer, and I lost elections to be NPP General Secretary – does that mean I am a failure in politics?

You concluded that I am a failure in life…….

By the Grace of God I was educated in Achimota School and I took a law degree at Legon in 1977. Some of my mates at Legon Law Faculty were Supreme Court Judge Nene Angaleh, Togbe Hodo V President of Volta Regional House of Chief. I was the President of Commonwealth Hall for Trinity Term 1976/77.

By the Grace of God I live in my own house a hen coop  in Kasoa, by the Grace of God I have four children, all of them University Graduates, Hyebere who went to Mfantispim, KNUST and lectured in China for 10 years, Adom who went to Akosombo International, Legon University and now post graduate law student in London, UK; Divine who went to Achimota, did law in Kumasi and now a very busy top divorce and criminal lawyer in Nkrabeah and Associates and finally my fourth born, product of Achimota School and a practicing medical doctor at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Go to Berekum, where I live in my own small cubicle – Exodus 14:14 Villa. My mother’s people have made me Head of Family of the Nana Yaw Woro Royal Family with over 2000 members.

By the Grace of God my father in law’s daughter who has slept beside me for FORTY years holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Legon, and manages my Hotel in Kasoa. When you see her especially in slit and kaba, with voluptuous endowment at right places……and you say I am a failure in life?

By the Grace of God I was President of Brong Ahafo Citizens Union in Accra for 4 years and President of Berekum Citizens Union in Accra for 6 years.

I have written 115 full stage scripts, and I am the Founder/Leader of the Theatre Mirrors Drama Society for 37 full years with a track record of 1,500 public performances. I was President of the Ghana Union of Theatre Societies for 10 years.

Maurice Ampaw, were you being thoughtless and reckless when you said I am a failure in life?

Maurice Ampaw, the other day a whole Brigadier General in Ghana Army did me a favour, and I called to thank him. I said to him: “May God Bless you. May you become a Major General…..” he cut me short. “I don’t want to be a Major General. I want to be like you!!!!

To God be the Glory.

I have ONE burning request to my Maker, that God should give me the opportunity to sing my signature song: “M’atwanAwuradeAnim…” at a function, covered, live, by CNN, beamed to the whole world……………

It is GREAT to be alive. To God be the Glory.

Today’s Europa League final:

0
Jose Mourinho, Roma boss

Six-time winners Sevilla clash with Mourinho’s Roma

Something must give in Wednesday’s Europa League final at the Puskas Arena, as six-time winners Sevilla tackle a Roma side managed by Jose Mourinho, who remains unbeaten in five continental finals.

The teams convene in Budapest, having both faltered in domestic competition but excelled in Europe’s second-tier competition, and only one can journey home with the silverware.

PROUD TRADITION

As Sevilla stride out on Wednesday night, with the glare of the continent upon them, they will uphold a proud tradition which has snowballed during the 21st century: semi-final victory over Juventus saw them reach the final of the Europa League – or its predecessor, the UEFA Cup – for a seventh time; two more than any other club.

Los Rojiblancos have won the competition on each previous occasion they have reached its finale, with the first success coming in 2006, when current captain Jesus Navas played his part in lifting the trophy at the tender age of 20, after Sevilla saw off the challenge of Middlesbrough.

The most recent win came three years ago, and now the most successful side in the tournament’s history conclude a troubled 2022-23 campaign by travelling to Hungary – a nation hosting its first European final since 1985.

Eliminating both Manchester United and Juve en route, Sevilla’s success in the semis featured a 25th win from their last 28 Europa League matches at Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, but they must now prove their mettle on neutral soil against particularly obdurate opponents.

DIFFICULT DOMESTIC SEASON

Like Roma, but to an even greater extent, the Andalucian club have endured a difficult domestic season, and they journey east under their third coach of the campaign: understated Basque boss Jose Luis Mendilibar. Thanks to his steadying influence, Sevilla have seen off the threat of relegation from La Liga, and their fortunes have distinctly improved since his appointment.

Paulo Dybala, Roma

Though they could still fall short of securing a top-half finish in Spain, Sevilla have lost just twice during Mendilibar’s spell as head coach – most recently on the Primera Division’s penultimate matchday, at the hands of Real Madrid – and are one win away from claiming a seventh continental title.

Victory in Budapest would mean only five clubs have won more major European trophies, and for those that believe in such things, the omens are good: the only previous meeting between Sevilla and Roma saw the Spanish side progress from the Europa League’s last 16 in 2020, before going on to lift the prize for a sixth time.

While Mendilibar – who will participate in his first European final – is hoping for Sevilla’s lucky number seven, his counterpart Jose Mourinho has already banked five major UEFA trophies to date.

MOST DECORATED MANAGER

Should Roma succeed this week, Mourinho will become the most decorated manager in the long history of European competition – moving clear of Italian maestro Giovanni Trapattoni – and having helped the Giallorossi lift the inaugural Europa Conference League trophy last year, he would also be the first coach to win the Europa League with three different clubs, following prior triumphs with Porto (2003) and Manchester United (2017).

Jose Luis Mendilibar, Sevilla boss

Though the Eternal City club lost to Inter in their only UEFA Cup final appearance, back in 1991, Wednesday’s will be Roma’s fifth European final overall, with the most recent seeing Mourinho’s men beat Feyenoord in Tirana this time last year.

Despite some dire recent form in Italy, a side which progressed through the autumn group stage before knocking out Red Bull Salzburg, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord (again) and semi-final victims Bayer Leverkusen could yet claim continental titles in consecutive seasons.

MOURINHO MASTERCLASS

Victory over the latter came thanks to a single goal scored by young Roman Edoardo Bove at Stadio Olimpico, with that first-leg lead being defended doggedly in Germany seven days later – a Mourinho masterclass in parking the bus.

Sitting sixth in Serie A with one game remaining, Roma can finish fifth at best following a 2-1 reverse at fellow European finalists Fiorentina last weekend. In fact, some have accused the Giallorossi of tanking during a run featuring three losses and four draws domestically, so the stakes are incredibly high this week.

The Europa League winners, of course, gain direct entry into the 2023-24 Champions League group stage, and Mourinho appears to have bet on everything coming good at the Puskas Arena, before – if rumours are to be believed – walking off into the sunset with reputation restored.

INJURIES & ABSENTEES

Having been Sevilla’s cup goalkeeper since Jose Luis Mendilibar arrived in Andalucia, Yassine Bounou will replace Marko Dmitrovic between the posts, as the Spanish side make several changes to the team beaten by Real Madrid on Saturday.

While Joan Jordan and Suso have overcome injuries to return to contention, both Tanguy Nianzou and Marcao remain doubts and Marcos Acuna is suspended, but Mendilibar still has plenty of options to choose from.

Despite longstanding concerns, it seems Roma’s main man Paulo Dybala will also be available in Budapest, after he was cleared by the club’s medical staff. Having recovered from an ankle injury suffered against Atalanta last month, the mercurial forward should at least be fit enough for a cameo from the bench.

Leonardo Spinazzola is also set to make it back in time for the final, having resumed full training at the start of the week; therefore, only Rick Karsdorp and Marash Kumbulla remain sidelined.

Nemanja Matic, goalkeeper Rui Patricio and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini did not travel to Tuscany at the weekend, but the latter – who has played a direct role in eight Europa League goals this season – will lead Roma out in the Hungarian capital.

PREDICTION

Jesus Navas, Sevella

There is no doubt that Sevilla’s form is far better coming into Wednesday’s grand finale, as Roma have lost momentum in Serie A and banked everything on winning in Europe.

The La Liga side have more attacking options available to them too, but Mourinho’s men can defend for their lives and strike from a set-piece – and that could be enough to secure more silverware for the defiant Giallorossi.

POSSIBLE LINEUP

Sevilla: Bounou; Navas, Bade, Gudelj, Telles; Fernando, Rakitic; Ocampos, Torres, Gil; En-Nesyri

Roma: Patricio; Mancini, Smalling, Ibanez; Celik, Cristante, Matic, Spinazzola; Pellegrini, El Shaarawy; Abraham

Illegal Miners On Rampage In Adansi …Brutally Attack Adansihene’s taskforce… … DCE, blames police for failing to act

illegal mining (galamsey)
Some of the taskforce members who were attacked by the illegal miners

Members of the anti-galamsey task force set up by Adansi Traditional Council (ATC) have allegedly been assaulted by a group of illegal miners at Amponyaase, in the Akrofrom district of the Ashanti region, when they attempted to halt their illegal operations.

Information available to The Chronicle indicates that the four-member task force was attacked by over forty illegal miners wielding machete, stones and clubs among others.

A land rover vehicle with registration number GT 4777-09, which was being used by the task force was vandalised, with one of the taskforce members reportedly struggling to gain his sight.

The Chronicle picked up information that when the police got wind of the attack, they rushed to the scene to rescue the task force members and also arrested some of the illegal miners who were granted police enquiry bail last week Saturday.

The vehicle vandalized by the illegal miners

The commander of the task force, John Korletey, told The Chronicle that on Saturday, May 27, this year, around 1pm, he got information that a group of illegal miners were busily digging for gold at a village called Amponyaase.

According to him, he and his colleagues proceeded to the village and indeed saw the illegal miners working.

When the task force enquired who gave them the go ahead to mine after the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Adansi Traditional Council (ATD) had directed that all illegal mining activities should cease in the Ashanti Region, the illegal miners mentioned one Aunti Ama, who, he continued, asked members of the task force to wait for her as she was on her way to the site, which they obliged.

John Korletey further told The Chronicle that when the lady finally arrived, she started questioning them about the one who sent them to the place and when they answered that it was the Adansihene, the lady responded that the area was not under his jurisdiction.

According to him, the moment Aunti Ama responded that the mining site was not under the jurisdiction of Adansihene, her employers pounced on them and started beating them with all kinds of offensive weapons. The illegal miners also mounted a barrier to stop the task force members from fleeing the site.

John Korletey, however, regretted that the illegal miners who were rounded up by the police were given bail a few hours later. He, therefore, called on the authorities to investigate the conduct of the police.

When contacted, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akrofuom, Mr Maurice Jonas Wood, confirmed the incident to The Chronicle.

When asked if indeed illegal mining activities were being carried out at Aponyaase, Jonas Wood responded in the affirmative, saying “I should think so. I am saying that because this is not the first time we have encountered such a mob action.”

According to him, sometime last year, a task force set up by the assembly came under attack at the same Amponyaase and when they ran to the community, they were rescued.

A white Nissan pick-up vehicle belonging to the assembly was vandalised. “They attacked my task force too, yes, they destroyed the vehicle they went with, it is an official vehicle with our name boldly written on it -a white Nissan pickup hard body.”

The DCE further disclosed to The Chronicle that the illegal miners poured petrol on the Nissan pickup of the assembly and nearly set it ablaze.

Maurice Jonas Wood regretted that after reporting the incident to the police at Obuasi, on November 25, 2022, no arrest has been made.

“We do not know what they are doing on it at the moment; we have even written to them to tell us why they have not taken any action against those guys,” the DCE told The Chronicle.

The DCE promised to hold a District Security Council (DISEC) meeting on Monday (yesterday) to discuss the incessant attacks on the galamsey task force by the illegal miners and their collaborators.

Meanwhile, the paramount chief of Adansi, Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II, has waded into the issue and condemned the attack.

He told the media, through his aide, that he suspected some of his chiefs and regents are thwarting his effort to stop illegal mining in the traditional area.

He has, therefore, appealed to the minister for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare to open investigation into the case.

I’m assuring NPP fraternity: I will break the 8 -Akoto

0
Dr Afriyie Akoto displaying the forms

A flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has boldly stated that he will lead the NPP to break the ‘8’ and go ahead to make Ghana a prosperous country.

He has, therefore, asked delegates of the NPP to vote for him to become the flagbearer of the NPP. The former Food and Agriculture Minister told hundreds of party faithful that his enviable track record as an Agricultural Economist for almost two decades at the United Nations and also as the Minister of Food and Agriculture of Ghana, bear testimony to his capabilities.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto made this observation on Monday, May 29, 2023 when a group of farmers and friends presented to him nomination forms of the party’s presidential primary they had picked for him from the NPP Headquarters, as a sign of support for his presidential ambition.

Dr Afriyie Akoto addressing the media

Commenting further, he said for six years that he headed the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, one of the most sensitive portfolios in the country, he laid a very good foundation for the country to thrive on for many years to come.

For instance, the advancement of the Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA), a program he single-handedly initiated, targeting six tree crops namely; oil palm, shea, cashew, Mango, Coconut and rubber, has the potential of generating US$12 billion annually for the country.

That notwithstanding, the government’s flagship program, Planting for Food and Jobs, which he introduced and spearheaded brought food security to the country.

These, together with many other programs he initiated, which yielded massive results for the country make him the ideal candidate for the topmost position of the Republic of Ghana.

He took time to highlight his ambitious programs for the country, using Agriculture as the base to drive the other sectors of the economy.

The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso noted that a vote for him as flagbearer of the NPP and subsequently as President of the Republic of Ghana will see him prioritise the agricultural sector with public funds to generate more revenue to develop the country.

“I used to work with the UN system for 18 years and I have worked around with all kinds of governments. I haven’t seen any government which has been able to develop its economy by borrowing both locally and externally. It is always the generation of domestic production and the alternative we have is agriculture production for export and domestic food security.

“So, it is the right thing to do and it is something that I am going to preach and preach and preach to everybody that if I become the President of Ghana, this country will use most of its public resources to generate the capacity that agriculture has so that we can get more foreign exchange and local currency to finance the development of other sectors of the economy”, he stated.

He then urged all the party delegates to trust him by campaigning and voting massively for him to emerge as the flagbearer of the NPP and subsequently as President of the Republic of Ghana.

“I will not let you down. I will go all out and clinch victory for ourselves and NPP and Ghana will become a better place for us”, he posited.

Kyeremanteng declares intention to contest Odoben NPP primary

0
Dr Michael Kyeremanteng

The Group President for the C4CGroup of Companies, Dr Michael Kyeremanteng has officially declared his intention to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as an aspirant.

Dr Kyeremanteng has successfully launched his bid to aspire to lead the ruling NPP in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa constituency, in the Central Region, as the party’s parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections.

At the official declaration of his intention to contest in the upcoming primaries,                                                      Dr. Kyeremanteng vowed that he would be the NPP’s Moses who would lead the party to the promise land in the constituency.

Dr. Kyeremanteng stated that though the constituency used to be a stronghold of the NPP, the lack of absolute unity among party members has caused the NPP the parliamentary seat to the NDC.

Voting pattern in the AOB Constituency-Parliamentary

The NDC won the parliamentary seat in 1996 with a percentage of 58.2% while the NPP came second after securing 40.9% but the table turned in 2000, when the NPP won by 51.7% and the NDC placed second with 43.5%

In the 2004 general elections, the NPP maintained the seat with 64.0% of the valid votes cast while the NDC had 34.5% but the NDC’s votes appreciated in the 2008 elections though the NPP still won.

The percentage margins between the NPP and the NDC in the 2008 general elections stood at 59.5% and 47.9% respectively, but the story changed during the next elections.

The NDC came into the picture strongly in the 2012 elections when it secured 49.8% to win against the NPP’s 48.6%

However, the NPP snatched the seat in 2016 by 54.9% as against the NDC’s 43.8% but the NDC made amends in the 2020 elections and won after securing 52.54% while the NPP obtained 47.46%.

Concerns of NPP members

Following the above statistics and the voting patterns in the constituency as far as the parliamentary elections are concerned, the grass root member of the NPP are rooting for Dr Kyeremanteng to lead the party.

To some, Dr Kyeremanteng is well known in the entire constituency following his philanthropist works in many communities, saying it would be an added advantage to the party if he is considered.

According to some of the members, it was high time the party settled on a true unifier who could win the seat with a landslide victory in 2024 and also maintain it just like former MP, Paul Collins Appiah Ofori did.

It is in the wake of this that some of the party members have called on Dr Kyeremateng, who is seen as a true grass root man, to contest in the party’s forth coming parliamentary primaries.

Addressing some of the delegates during the launch, Dr Kyeremanteng indicated that his decision to contest was in direct response to calls from the delegates.

He, therefore, promised that “Like Moses, I will lead the party to the promise land by winning the seat from the NDC”.

As a philanthropist, Dr. Kyeremateng also has an extensive knowledge in homeopathic treatment, expertise in corporate management environment and rich experience in the area of management.

He has considerable knowledge in ICT structuring with an enviable reputation in corporate business management and advisory built on a considerable volume of transactions spanning over 15 years.

Dr Kyeremanteng has been a member of the ruling party since 2006 and played various roles in the enviable political journey of P.C Appiah Ofori in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa constituency.

JUSAG suspends strike for 2 weeks

JUSAG

The Executives of the Judicial Service Association of Ghana (JUSAG) have urged members to return to work today, May 30, 2023, following temporary suspension of the industrial action.

JUSAG declared strike last week Wednesday, in protest over unpaid arrears and failure to review their salaries by the government.

In the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relation (MELR) and JUSAG dated May 29, 2023, the parties agreed that the industrial action should be suspended for negotiations to continue.

The signatories to the MoU were Ignatius Baffour Awuah, sector minister and Samuel Afotey, JUSAG National President, and witnessed by Kow Abeka Essuman, legal counsel from the Office of the President and Abdullai Yakubu, General Secretary of JUSAG.

The meeting featured the Office of the President, MELR, Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice and JUSAG.

However, it was agreed that the strike would be suspended only for two weeks to enable the parties to deliberate in good faith and make the necessary arraignments for the  review of  salaries and related allowances of JUSAG  members.
