Actor Jamie Foxx has apologised for an Instagram post that was accused of being antisemitic.

Foxx, 55, has deleted the post, which read: “They killed this dude name Jesus… what do you think they’ll do to you???! #fakefriends #fakelove”.

Some social media users said Foxx’s post echoed an antisemitic belief that Jewish people were collectively responsible for Jesus Christ’s death.

The Roman Catholic Church officially repudiated the idea in 1965.

On Saturday, Foxx addressed the criticism in a new Instagram post which said: “I want to apologise to the Jewish community and everyone who was offended by my post.

“I now know my choice of words have caused offense and I’m sorry. That was never my intent.

“To clarify, I was betrayed by a fake friend and that’s what I meant with ‘they’ not anything more,” the Ray star said in an Instagram post.

Jennifer Aniston also faced criticism after she appeared to “like” Foxx’s original post before it was deleted. The Friends actor then released a statement on Instagram, saying she did not support any form of antisemitism.

‘We can’t find any medicine that works’ –Celine Dion’s sister says singer is struggling amid health battle

Celine Dion

Celine Dion’s sister Claudette Dion said that the singer has been struggling to find treatment for her stiff person syndrome diagnosis.

During an interview with Le Journal de Montreal, Claudette revealed that despite working with “the top researchers in the field,” the Grammy winner, 55, has seen little improvement in her health.

“We can’t find any medicine that works, but having hope is important,” Claudette said.

According to the National Institutes of Health, stiff person syndrome is a “rare, progressive neurological disorder” that can cause stiff muscles in the torso, arms and legs.

It affects about one in a million people.

Following the diagnosis, Celine was forced to cancel her Courage World Tour, which Claudette said was necessary for her chances of rehabilitation.

“I honestly think that she mostly needs to rest. She always goes above and beyond, she always tries to be the best and top of her game,” she said. “At one point, your heart and your body are trying to tell you something. It’s important to listen to it.”

Their sister Linda has since moved into Celine’s Las Vegas home to act as a caretaker for the hitmaker.

“When I call her and she’s busy, I speak to my sister Linda who lives with her and tells me that she’s working hard,” Claudette explained. “She’s listening to the top researchers in the field of this rare disease as much as possible.”

Despite the lack of improvement in Celine’s condition, the family still has “trust” that things will get better.

Yul Edochie’s first wife, May, officially files for divorce

Yul Edochie and wives

Yul Edochie unveiled Judy Austin as his second wife in April 2022 after they welcomed a son. Since the announcement, they have continuously been on the social media radar for one controversy or the other.

After keeping calm through the controversies and the death of their son, his first wife, May Edochie, has finally taken legal action against the duo.

On Tuesday, a law firm, DPA Family Clinic, disclosed the legal charges Mrs Edochie is filing against Yul and his second wife.

A statement written by one of its Legal practitioners, Emeka Ugwuonye, on their official Facebook page titled “Yul Edochie situation: Understanding the reality of it” revealed more about Yul and Judy’s controversial union.

Mr Ugwuonye wrote, “To avoid doubts, May Yul-Edochie filed a divorce petition against Yul. She also filed against Judy as a party cited, asking for N100 million (equivalent to 130,208.40) in damages against Judy for adultery with her husband.”

“Make no mistake about it: Yul and Judy are NOT husband and wife and can not be so until Yul and May are divorced. It is a combination of delusion and absurdity for the two to call themselves husband and wife yet,” he added.

The legal practitioner further revealed that Mrs Edochie is represented in court by Femi Falana’s Firm and Eculaw Group, while DPA plays the support role.

In the statement, Mr Ugwuonye revealed that Yul and his second wife received copies of the suit papers, which means they are aware of the lawsuit against them.

However, the duo is said to be avoiding the service of the process despite their awareness.

The legal practitioner also disclosed that the court bailiff tried many times to serve them following the court rules, but they evaded the service of the court process.

The movie industry is really dead -Beverly Afaglo

Beverly Afaglo

Actress, TV presenter, and entrepreneur Beverly Afaglo Baah has lamented the ailing state of the movie industry. The Ghanaian movie industry has over the years seen little or no revamp, many actors have lashed out at the collapse of the art industry with lots of the players venturing into other side hustles.

Adding her voice to this matter, she mentioned that hope was the only rope they were clinching onto but the comeback seems far-fetched.

Speaking on UTV Showbiz Night, she explained that the lack of funding and unavailable resources are contributing factors to the slumber of the movie industry, also citing private individuals who invest in producing content but don’t make the returns in the long run which is worrying.

“We were holding onto hope, thinking it will bounce back but it seems far-fetched, truth be told the industry is dead. I was having a conversation with one of my colleagues about the industry but in conclusion, we realized there is absolutely nothing happening towards reviving the industry. it is pretty worrying.

“Only Akwaaba magic on DSTV produces content lately by contracting producers of the likes of Shirley Frimpong Manso, Ivan Quarshigah, and Smartys productions. we are doing the best we can but it is not working, Our very own actors turn producers don’t even get their returns when they invest in production”.

At least 30 people have been killed and dozens of others injured after a train derailed in southern Pakistan.
Several carriages of a Hazara Express train derailed on Sunday near Sahara railway station in Nawabshah, Sindh province.
“This is quite a big accident,” Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique told reporters. Rafique said at least 1,000 passengers were aboard the train when it derailed on a section of track where no faults had been reported.
Senior police officer Abid Baloch said 30 bodies had been recovered and more than 60 people were injured, some critically. He said the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
Mohsin Syal, a railway official, earlier told HUM News channel that eight coaches of the Hazara Express, which was travelling from Karachi to Abbottabad, derailed in Nawabshah, about 275km (170 miles) from Karachi, the capital of Sindh province.
Images posted to local media show dozens of people at the site, with some smashing windows to help passengers clamber out of the twisted carriages and at least one coach overturned.
There were chaotic scenes at the Nawabshah Trauma Centre as ambulances and private cars ferried the injured for treatment.

Uganda paternity testing causes huge controversy

0
Uganda paternity testing

With reports of a sharp increase in the number of men in Uganda seeking paternity tests, fears are growing it could break up families and leave children psychologically scarred.

The issue has been a hot topic of debate in the country since a tabloid newspaper published a story claiming that a well-known business tycoon – who had several wives and mistresses – had a row with one of his spouses, prompting him to request paternity tests that reportedly said he was the biological father of only 15 of his 25 children.

The tycoon and his family have never commented publicly, and the report has not been independently verified.

But the story spread like wildfire and has caused huge controversy over the last few months, prompting some lawmakers to make an emotional appeal to men to stop putting their families and children through the trauma of tests.

“Let’s live like our forefathers lived. The child born in the house is your child,” Minister of Mineral Development Sarah Opendi said in parliament. Although she qualified her statement by adding that if a man wanted a paternity test it should be done when a child is born – not when they are grown up.

Most worryingly, the privately owned Monitor newspaper reported that testing has caused domestic violence, with police arresting an Israeli national living in Uganda for allegedly killing his wife after DNA results showed that he was not the father of their six-month-old child. The man has not yet been charged.

Imran Khan: Is his political future over now he is in jail?

0
Imran Khan

Imran Khan has been arrested for the second time in a matter of months, but this time the reaction looks very different. What could happen next?

There could not have been a starker contrast between 9 May and 5 August this year.

While Imran Khan’s first arrest led to protests in the streets from Peshawar to Karachi, with buildings burning and the army on the streets, Saturday night was no different from any other normal night in Pakistan.

Mr Khan is currently in prison, sentenced to three years for not declaring money gained by selling state gifts.

The sentence will lead to his disqualification before the upcoming elections.

His call for peaceful protests, urging people not to sit quietly in their homes, has – for now – has not worked. Why?

Ask government ministers and they will say that it is because people do not want to follow Imran Khan or his party, the PTI – unwilling to be associated with a group responsible for previous violence. That is not the message from Mr Khan’s supporters.

Imran Khan’s relationship with the establishment – shorthand in Pakistan for the politically-powerful military and intelligence agencies – soured more than a year ago.

Mr Khan was widely seen by analysts as having come to power with the help of the establishment and to have subsequently lost it when that relationship deteriorated.

Defiance, fear in Niger as ECOWAS deadline looms

Men hold a child dressed in military uniform as they gather with thousands of anti-sanctions protesters in support of putschist soldiers in the capital Niamey, Niger August 3, 2023

Yeye Issoufou has joined pro-coup demonstrations in Niger three times since members of the presidential guards seized power in the West African country on July 26.

Numbering in their hundreds, the crowds have marched through the streets of Niger’s capital, Niamey, singing songs and waving placards hailing the country’s self-declared new leader Abdourahmane Tchiani. They booed “imperialist France” as well as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which has threatened to intervene militarily and restore deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.

Issoufou, who works at Aghrymet, a climate institute in the capital, is frustrated by insecurity, corruption and a worsening economy in landlocked Niger. The country is battling armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) and is among the poorest in the world.

“They [France] have been exploiting uranium here for almost 63 years but we don’t have a dam that can produce electricity for Niger,” he said of Niamey’s former colonial ruler.

“We have hopes that the military regime will make Niger better because of the way they have communicated to the people. They said they have established other strategies to grow our economy.”

The coup in Niger makes the country the fifth in West Africa – after Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Chad – whose government has been toppled by its military since 2020.

International condemnation has been swift and harsh, particularly from ECOWAS, which has imposed a host of sanctions against Niger, including a no-fly zone and border closures. Neighbouring Nigeria, which supplies 70 percent of Niger’s electricity, has also cut off the power supply, plunging the 25-million-strong population into darkness.

The regional bloc also gave Niger’s military a one-week ultimatum to reinstate Bazoum, by August 6, or risk military intervention.

The Assembly member for Aburi West Electoral Area in Akuapem South municipality Hon.Daniel Asiamah 9in white long sleeve) with some of the personalities and students

In the quest to change the recent poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) among students in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region, the Assembly Member for Aburi West, Daniel Asiamah, has organised a career guidance and leadership seminar dubbed “The Mindset.”

The career guidance and leadership seminar was aimed at providing a platform for successful and prominent individuals in the country to speak to the students, including those from Senior High Schools (SHS) within the Municipality.

The Aburi West Electoral Area Assembly member further donated mathematical sets to the candidates at the event, and charged them to work harder and pass their exams in order to drive home their individual aspirations.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Daniel Asiamah expressed worry over the poor performance of students in the BECE in the district, adding that the Akuapem South Municipality Education Directorate recorded a nearly 47% failure in 2022.

This, to him, prompted him to contribute his widow’s mite, through organising free extra classes for this year’s BECE candidates in the area towards a better narrative when it comes to issues of quality education within the Municipality.

The candidates are optimistic of improving their performance this year, but some are skeptical about mathematics.

Kwaku Sintim-Misa, a Ghanaian actor, Director, and satirist, better known in the showbiz industry as KSM, called for a revision of the methodology used by Ghanaian teachers for the teaching of mathematics, as it had become a national problem.

He commended the Assembly Member for the event, stating that it would help motivate the students to aim higher and have self-confidence in achieving their goals.

The Mindset brought very noticeable personalities from different faucets of life, including Amoako Asante Kakra , an Information Management System specialist, Francisca Amoah a.k.a Mame Koma Addo, an Assistant Director and TV Host, and Rodger Henaku Larbi, Human Resource Manager, Ghana Education Service (GES) Akuapem South Directorate.

The various speakers advised the students to be disciplined and have a positive mindset that everything was possible only when there was determination.

About 1,000 candidates from both public and private basic schools in the Akuapem South District are expected to write this year’s BECE which begins today, August 7 to August 11.
