The Kaduna State Government has recruited 7,000 youths into the state vigilance service to complement the efforts of federal security agencies in tackling insecurity in the state.

Speaking during the commencement of training for the newly recruited vigilante members at the Police College Kaduna, Governor Uba Sani said his administration will do everything humanly possible to curb the menace of banditry, kidnapping and other related crimes that are threatening the peace and security of citizens of the state.

The thousands of young men and women who converged on the Police College in the capital city were drawn from the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.

According to the governor, the vigilante members would to be deployed to rural communities.

The recruitment and screening of the trainees is in collaboration with critical stakeholders including local government chairmen, traditional and religious leaders.

Governor Sani believes that this initiative, apart from being a major step towards restoring security and development in the state, will also provide jobs for the youths.

Faced with the challenge of inadequate personnel to successfully wage the battle against bandits and other criminal elements in the communities, the Kaduna State Government in therefore optimistic that the recruitment of these able bodied men and women into the state vigilance service will assist the conventional security agencies with actionable intelligence due to their knowledge of the local environment.

Tinubu shouldn’t be blamed for economic hardship –Sanusi Lamido

0
Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi

Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, said it would be unfair for him to criticise President Bola Tinubu over the country’s economic hardship Nigerians.

Mr Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), speaking during a virtual religious event on Sunday, said Nigerians who expected him to speak about the economic hardship deliberately wanted him to oppose the president.

He explained that he had to deviate from the religious theme of the event to remind Nigerians about his stands on the badly managed economic policies of the immediate past administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the Buhari administration ignored his advice on how to take Nigeria out of its economic woes.

Mr Sanusi said economists with a fair sense of reasoning know that the current administration has made the right decision (fuel subsidy removal) to save Nigeria from the bondage of debts dug by the past administration.

“I have been, over the years, talked about the pending crisis ahead of the current economic hardship. Any economist who has studied monetary policy in the last eight years knows that Nigerians will fall into this difficult situation.

“The difficult situation Nigerians are facing is just the beginning (if the right decision is not put in place) because Nigeria is not exceptional; such situations happened in Germany, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Venezuela.

“If I am to be fair and just to President Bola Tinubu, he is not to blame for the current hardship; for eight years, we were living on a fake lifestyle with huge debt from foreign and domestic debts. The Central Bank of Nigeria owes over N30 trillion, which resulted in debt service surpassing 100 per cent.

“I can’t join other Nigerians criticising Tinubu on the current economic hardship, and I am not saying he is a saint free from wrongdoing, but in this current economic situation, President Tinubu is not to be blamed.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos on Monday took the first ride as the Lagos Blue Line rail began operations. The governor took the ride from the Marina station to Mile 2 around 9:00 a.m. Before he boarded the train, Sanwo-Olu explained to his co-passengers the requirements to board the train.

Sanwo-Olu was accompanied by his wife Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; deputy Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the State Government Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, former Deputy Governor Femi Pedro; an ex-Speaker of the House of Assembly Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro among other government officials.

According to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), for the first month, the train would run only 12 trips with the locomotive system.

LAMATA Managing Director Abimbola Akinajo noted, however, that the agency will begin the electric-powered train operation with 76 trips. An estimated passenger capacity between 150,000 and 175,000 are expected to take rides from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Earlier, the governor had asked Lagosians to take ownership of the rail tracks even as his government has put measures to protect the facility.

“There are over 300 CCTV cameras across the entire rail with over 30 cameras monitoring the tracks alone, with command and control centers available in all stations along the track. Lagos, this is your project,” he added.

“Take ownership and treat it with decency as you would treat anything that belongs to you. Any altercation or disturbance on the train will NOT be tolerated. It goes without saying that vandalism also will NOT be tolerated.”

0

The Ministry of Education (MoE) will take delivery of 600 bags of maize from the National Service Scheme (NSS) for the feeding of the Senior High School (SHS) students.

The stock of maize being supplied is part of the maiden harvest from the NSS farms under the Sekyere -Kumawu Economic Enclave Project (SKEEP).

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister for Education, announced this when he led a team from the Ministry to tour the SKEEP sites and to have first-hand information and acquaint themselves with the project.

The team first inspected the warehouse for the storage of maize and other crops.

He described the initiative as very encouraging since it would go a long way to reduce the cost of procuring maize to feed the students.

The Education Minister noted that the collaboration between MOE and the NSS would help create a ready market for the SKEEP.

He highly commended the NSS Board and Management for the great strides and applauded the  Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Osei -Assibey Antwi, for his good leadership as well as his vision to make good use of the NSS personnel to boost food production in the country.

The Education Minister was very impressed with the state of development at the project site and recommended the establishment of an Agricultural town (i.e. hostels for service personnel, apartments for workers as well as lecturers, basic school, clinic, lecture  hall or training hall, technology centre etc ) around the SKEEP enclave so that the farmers and other staff would have all the needed facilities as they continue working on their farms.

“This is the beginning of something great. I would like to applaud my brother for his great leadership. This gives a window of opportunity into the future for this great future of ours”, He stressed.

Dr. Adutwum stated that, NSS had shown the way for President Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s agenda of Planting for Food and Jobs that would create an opportunity for the commencement of school farms which was in line with what the NSS was doing.

He indicated that, the Ministry would also arrange for tertiary students to use the SKEEP as a learning avenue for their practical lessons to promote effective management of teaching and learning so that they could master whatever they were taught at school.

The Education Minister stated that, the SKEEP initiative was not just for the training of graduates to become professional farmers but also to help in the production of food for the Free SHS programme and school feeding at the Basic level.

“I am waiting for a day when the universities would establish a branch around the SKEEP farm so that their students could go and do one year practice”. And this can be replicated at other project sites nationwide,” the Minister emphasized.

Dr. Adutwum appealed to the staff of the SKEEP project to ensure that their children were supported to go to school so that they could shape their future dreams and aspirations.

Mr. Osei Assibey, on his part, assured the Minister of the Scheme’s readiness to continue working hard to support the nation’s transformation agenda through  collaboration with all stakeholders.

He stated that, as an agency under the Education Ministry, it would continue to put in prudent measures to enhance the development of the education sector as well as other facets of the nation’s economy.

Mr. Osei -Assibey pledged to collaborate with all stakeholders to put in place the right measures that could promote the growth and development of the country.

The CEO lauded the government for his support through the Ghana cares programme, which would go a long way towards enhancing the SKEEP initiative.

Whilst congratulating the Minister for Education and his team for the visit, he also extended another congratulations to the Minister for Food and Agriculture (MoFA) for embracing the project and promising technical support from the Ministry as well as directing the Agric Directors in the Sekyere Kumawu, Afram Plains and Asante Akim North Municipalities to contribute towards the success of the SKEEP.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is constructing a multi-purpose office complex for its branch at Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region to serve people in the surrounding districts and municipalities.

The Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Mr. Kwasi Agyemang Busia, noted that the need for the building was consistent with the Authority’s transformation agenda it had been charting since 2017.

He stated that in the last six years, the DVLA management had moved from what was described as a mediocre service institution to being the best state-owned enterprise in customer service provision in 2021.

“Seven years ago, DVLA was beleaguered with revenue leakages, inefficiency and poor corporate image but today DVLA is recognized as a world class in efficiency, leveraging digitization and showing a positive gross revenue of over 380% since 2017 and 1,012% since 2010,” he noted.

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Alhassan S. Tampuli, praised the Dunkwahene, Okofrobour Dr. Obeng Nuako III, for releasing a large parcel of land for the DVLA office, noting that the Chief could have reaped millions of cedis if he had decided to sell it to private developers.

He stated that the Dunkwa DVLA had been operating from a cocoa shed, and expressed happiness that at long last a new office was going to be provided for the Municipality.

The Deputy Minister assured that the project would be completed and commissioned in a year’s time.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper Denkyira East, Dr. Festus Awuah Coffie, expressed appreciation to the DVLA management and the Transport Ministry for the project. He also thanked the Dunkwahene for the release of land and praised him for his commitment to the development of the Denkyira State.

Okofrobour Dr. Obeng Nuako III, who chaired the function, said he cut the sod for the construction of Sports Complex for Dunkwa some six years ago, but the project, which had one year left to be completed, was yet to be completed and charged the DVLA to ensure that the one year duration of the completion of the office block was adhered to.

UK reports new record for Channel migrant crossings

Members of Royal National Lifeboat Institution help migrants to disembark

The number of migrants crossing the Channel in small boats from northern France to Britain hit a new daily high for 2023, UK government statistics released on Sunday showed.

Some 872 migrants aboard 15 different vessels made the perilous journey across one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes on Saturday, beating this year’s previous 24-hour high of 756 on 10 August.

It brings the total number to have arrived on the shores of southeast England so far in 2023 to more than 21,000.

That is less than the levels seen at this point last year, but still presents a major political and practical headache for the UK government.

London promised tighter border controls after the country left the European Union, and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made “stopping the boats” a key priority.

His Conservative government has branded the cross-Channel route “illegal” and passed legislation blocking asylum applications from anyone arriving without prior authorisation.

Gen Oligui speaks at the ceremony in Gabon’s capital, Libreville

Gabon’s new military leader was sworn in as the head of state on Monday, less than a week after ousting the president whose family had ruled the Central African nation for more than five decades.

General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema took the oath in the presidential palace in front of a packed, boisterous room of government officials as well as military and local leaders in Gabon’s capital Libreville. Oligui, a cousin of the ousted President Ali Bongo Ondimba, served as a bodyguard to his late father and headed the republican guard, an elite military unit.

Speaking to a standing ovation on Monday, Oligui said the military had seized power without bloodshed and promised to return power to the people by organising free, transparent and credible elections.

While the coup was celebrated on the streets of Gabon, it drew condemnation from the African Union and the international community.

Scientists design energy source to allow astronauts live on the Moon

Prof Simon Middleburgh also develop nuclear power for space rockets

Scientists have developed an energy source which could allow astronauts to live on the Moon for long periods of time.

The Nasa-led Artemis Program hopes for an outpost on the Moon by around 2030.

Bangor University has designed nuclear fuel cells, the size of poppy seeds, to produce the energy needed to sustain life there.

Prof Simon Middleburgh from the university said the work was a challenge – “but it was a fun one”.

The Moon, which is seen by some to be the gateway to Mars, contains a lot of valuable resources needed for modern technology.

The hope is that it could be used as a springboard to reach the planets beyond.

As space technology advances at a rapid pace, the BBC was given exclusive access to the Bangor University Nuclear Futures Institute’s laboratory.

The Bangor team, which is a world leader on fuels, works with partners such as Rolls Royce, the UK Space Agency, Nasa and the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the US.

Prof Middleburgh from the Nuclear Futures Institute said the team hoped to fully test the nuclear fuel “over the next few months”.
