I’m a proud UP, but my heritage is not a motivating factor -Akoto

Owusu Afriyie Akoto

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has said his conviction to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general election is not motivated by the pride of his heritage in the UP tradition and hence, the sense of entitlement to lead the party in the current leadership race.

Instead, it has engendered his life-long commitment to work tirelessly to realise the vision of the Founding Fathers of the party.

He said, as the son of Baffour Akoto, founder and leader of the National Liberation Movement (NLM), he belongs to a generation of party members who trace their roots right to the very birth of the United Party (UP) tradition, but that does not bestow on him any sense of entitlement in the current NPP leadership race. Rather, his zeal to realise the dream of the founders of the party is his biggest motivation.

“I belong to the generation of party members who trace their roots right to the very birth of our tradition. But the pride of this heritage does not bestow on any of the entitlement in the current leadership race.

“Rather, it has engendered a real life-long commitment to work tirelessly to realise the vision of the founding fathers on whose shoulders our tradition and the spirit of the party stands”, he noted.

Dr. Akoto made this observation when he addressed a press conference in Accra on Thursday, September 14, 2023, over his preparedness for the NPP National Delegates Conference scheduled for November 4, 2024.

Economic hardship
Motivated by the dream of the founding fathers of the UP tradition, the former two-term Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, in the Ashanti Region, who holds two post-graduate degrees (M.Sc and PhD) from one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Cambridge University, assured of working tirelessly to ensure that he wins the mandate of the delegates of the party.

He also assured to subsequently as President of the Republic of Ghana, to turn around the fortunes of the country through pragmatic policies and programs with Agriculture as the bedrock and uplift the people the economic hardships they are going through.

To this effect, he has urged members of his campaign team in all the Electoral Areas and constituencies in the country to work diligently to ensure that all delegates vote massively for him (number 3 on the ballot box) to lead the charge for an emphatic victory in the December 2024 Presidential elections.

Victory
“I know the battle ahead is not going to be easy, but with determination and blessings from the Almighty, victory will be ours”, he assured.

Dr. Akoto, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, who also worked in the UN systems for more than 18 years, placed 4th in the Special Delegates Conference held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, surprising many political pundits and pollsters.

He is expected to intensify his campaign in the coming weeks as he re-strategises ahead of the NPP presidential primary ‘showdown’.
Over 210,000 party delegates are expected to exercise their franchise in the much-publicised elections.

Editorial: Voter registration: Is Mahama not raising a false alarm?

0
Editorial

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer for the 2024 General Elections, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, are up in arms about the ongoing limited voter registration exercise. For the records, the Electoral Commission (EC) has opened the doors to those who have attained age 18 to register. This will qualify them to vote in future elections organised by the Commission.

But, whilst Mr. Mahama and the NDC are not against the limited registration exercise, they have big problem with the manner the exercise is being conducted. To them, the registration should have taken place at all the polling stations across the country, instead of limiting it to the district capitals.

Mr. Mahama’s argument is that not all potential voters have the financial wherewithal to travel, sometimes over fifty or hundred kilometres, to the district capitals to register. Therefore, to the former president, it would be appropriat if the registration exercise was conducted at the polling stations to make it easier for people to just walk in and register.

The EC, however, disagreed with Mr. Mahama and his party, and proceeded to come out with a time table for the limited registration exercise. The development compelled the NDC and other opposition parties – the Convention People’s Party (CPP), All People’s Congress (APC), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) – to file a suit at the court against the EC, trying to place an injunction against the registration exercise until their concerns had been addressed.

The EC, nevertheless, went ahead with the registration and this has forced a private individual, who had also sued over the same concerns raised by the opposition parties, to file a contempt case against the EC. The case is currently pending before an Accra High Court. But before the court could settle the whole caboodle, some Civil Society Organisations have also joined the fray, arguing that the decision to limit the registration to only the district capital was wrong.

The EC, through its Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, explained during Joy FM’s Newsfile programme over the weekend, that it had decided to limit the registration to only the district capitals, because the intention was to register those who had attained voting age to enable them participate in the impending district level elections.

He noted that though ignorance of the law is not an excuse, there were some people who, even though had already registered, still think they could go to the registration centres and register, because they had lost their Voter’s ID Card and, therefore, needed replacement. There are others who also think because they have relocated from the constituency where they originally registered, they have to do fresh registration to enable them vote in the new constituency they have relocated to.

To him, if the data of these ‘ignorant voters’ is marched against those already in the custody of the EC, their names, apart from prosecution, would also be deleted from the national register. According to him, it was to avoid all these confusions that they decided to limit the registration to only the district capitals. Though he did not specifically mention polling stations, he promised that the registration would be expanded next year to enable qualified voters to register and vote in the December 2024 election.

First of all, The Chronicle does not seek to condemn the stance that had been taken by Mr Mahama and his party – and as a matter of fact, all the major opposition parties. Mr. Mahama, like any other Ghanaian, has the right to express concerns over national issues, more especially when it involves his fortune or otherwise in the 2024 elections. The same applies to all those who have proceeded to court. They are exercising their right and nobody can question that.

But having listened to the EC’s side of the story, we are tempted to believe that they have a genuine case, except that their communication with the general public has been poor. The opposition parties appear to have convinced the general public that this is the last voter registration exercise the EC is conducting, prior to next year’s election. Unfortunately, per what Dr. Serebour Quaicoe told Joy FM listeners, it is far from the truth.

The Electoral Commission will conduct another registration exercise next year to capture all qualified voters who do not have their names on the register. If this is really known to Mr. Mahama and NDC, then The Chronicle does not understand why they are raising eyebrows, as though the electoral body has the intention to cheat for one political party in the next year’s elections.

As we indicated earlier, Mr. Mahama has the right to talk if he feels that something wrong is going, but in so doing, he must be circumspect because he has a large following that take every public statement he makes serious.  With the EC, this explanation should have been made public long ago and not wait till people have proceeded to court. In our opinion, the communication wing of the EC must be strengthened to keep constantly updating the public on issues affecting the 2024 polls and other elections.

New police station block at Hweremoase

The newly built police station block

A new police station block at Hweremoase in the Adansi Asokwa District funded by residents of the community, home and abroad, has been commissioned with a call on the public to form a partnership with the police to enable them combat crime.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Eric Ken Winful, who made the call, noted that, invariably, people who committed crimes came from the same community and people know them, but refuse to report them to the police to have them arrested and put behind bars.

“I urge you Hweremoase community to form [a] partnership with the police here and report criminals amongst you to them. If you do not expose criminals among you; such criminals will one day turn round to steal from you,” he stated.

He commended the Hweremoase community for coming to the aid of the police administration by putting up such a magnificent block for use by the police.

Touching on the request by the community for the police to bring back the barrier to the centre of the town, the Regional Commander said it was for a good reason that the barrier was moved to a new location, and urged them to accept the decision.

Mr. Festus Adei, a member of the Hweremoase community in the diaspora, who came down for the commissioning of the police station block, noted that with the station sited in the community, the security of the people had improved, and stressed the community’s support for the police.

He appealed to the police administration to site the Adansi Asokwa District Police Headquarters at Hweremoase.

Nana Barimansu Antwi Kwanin II, Adansi Benkumhene, who represented the Adansihene, Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II, expressed his appreciation to those who initiated and funded the construction of the police station block. He noted that the police could not operate effectively without the support of the public, and urged the Hweremoase community to give the police the support they needed.

The Benkumhene called for the setting up of a police post on the scarp between Adansi Asokwa and Fomena to check robbers who attack innocent drivers and passengers, especially in the night.

New Krofrom Electoral Area gets fourth mechanised borehole

Hon. Frimpong commissioning the Borehole

Constituents of the New Krofrom Electoral Area in the Kumasi Metropolis have benefitted from the fourth mechanised borehole to be installed by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) since 2009.

It was funded under the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) at a cost of GH¢45,000.

The Assembly man tastes the first drop of water from the facility

The Assembly Member for the electoral area, Patrick Kwame Frimpong, said at the  commissioning of the facility last week Thursday, that it would complement water supply in the  area, which is close to the main distribution point of the Ghana Water Company Limited, and which operations might be affected by the construction of the Suame Interchange.

He said in case of a disruption in water supply because of the commencement of the said interchange project, the mechanised borehole, together with the three existing ones, would be handy to provide the needed relief.

Patrick Frimpong, who is also the Presiding Member of the KMA, gave an assurance that the facility would be maintained as the previous ones, because since they were installed years back, there had not been any cause for break downs, let alone maintenance.

In another development, the KMA has also inaugurated a major drain at Yenyawoso, a suburb of Kumasi.

It was also funded under the DACF at a GH¢101,700, and is designed to reduce flooding in the area.

The Presiding Member cautioned the residents against throwing refuse into the drains to avoid choking the flow of water.

The N60 billion luxury jet

Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi, the chairperson and CEO of Nestoil Group, a Nigerian oil conglomerate, is set to complete the purchase of a $76 million Gulfstream G-700 jet from the manufacturer in Georgia, United States, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report today.

In addition, Mr Azudialu-Obiejesi and his oil firm are now strategising to expand their dealings with American businesses in Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, California, and other states in the US, documents show.

Incorporated in 1991, Nestoil has grown to be one of Nigeria’s foremost indigenous engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) companies in the oil and gas sector.

Mr Azudialu-Obiejesi, 63, the founder and managing director of the company, has now set his eyes beyond the shores of Nigeria, looking to build a world-class energy conglomerate, those close to his business said.

Aside from expanding Nestoil’s operation in America, PREMIUM TIMES understands that the billionaire businessman’s other priorities include the purchase of a new Gulfstream G-700 aeroplane that sells for $76 million.

At the current official market rate of N780 per US dollars, the amount is equivalent to N59.3 billion.

The G-700 aircraft is an all-new jet that is currently in flight test and is anticipated to enter into service this year, according to Guardian Jet, an organisation providing aircraft owners and operators with market intelligence advice.

The aircraft, its manufacturers say, is an ultra-long-range bespoke private jet with two engines. It will offer the largest cabin in business aviation, carrying up to 19 passengers and having up to five living areas.

If the purchase is completed, Mr Azudialu-Obiejesi and his Nestoil will be among the first set of buyers in the world to acquire the luxury jet.

Transport Minister laments as insecurity stalls Kaduna to Kano rail line construction

0
Minister of Transport, Sen. Saidu Alkali

The Minister of Transport, Sen. Saidu Alkali, has lamented that insecurity stalled the completion of the Kaduna to Kano rail line.

According to NAN, Alkali made this known while inspecting the level of work on the construction site in Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Saturday.

The Minister directed the contractor handling the construction to use anti-theft materials to check the activities of vandals. He advised the contractors to use anti-theft clips instead of the metal clips they used to hold the rail track.

He said using anti-theft clips would make it difficult for vandals to remove.

The Minister explained that the visit was to monitor progress and offer advice where necessary.

“We came to see things for ourselves, as you know, seeing is believing. We were able to appraise the performance of the contractor.

“We have raised some little observations on the clips they are using, and we have asked them to use anti-theft clips so that vandals cannot easily remove them,” he said.

Noting the security challenge in the area, the Minister promised to collaborate with security agencies to ensure the delivery of the project in the shortest time possible.

Earlier, the Project Coordinator of China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), Mr. Mark Zoe, said the project had reached 22.6 per cent completion.

Zoe, however, identified insecurity as a severe challenge in the area and asked for collaboration with the military to ensure the safety of workers while on site.

He said two of the company’s staff had already been kidnapped along Tashar Yari in Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

DAILY POST recalls that the $1.2 billion rail line was flagged off by former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2021 but commenced construction in April 2022.
