I went into fashion after deferring my course in University  –Elikem The Tailor

Ghanaian actor cum celebrity fashion designer, Elikem Kumordzi popularly known as ‘Elikem The Tailor’, has revealed that the demise of his father which forced him to defer his University education for a year, actually gave birth to his fashion career.

Speaking on Joy Learning TV’s Entrepreneurship development programme dubbed, ‘The Career Trail’, Elikem narrated that when he reached Level 300 at the University of Ghana, things took a downturn when he lost his father forcing him to postpone his degree by one year.

“(Around the same time in) Legon, Level 300, my dad had passed away. This was maybe like some 8 to 10 years now. My mom was doing well for me and my little brother to go to school. He had also started the University of Science and Technology by then, so it was hard for everyone so I deferred one year of the course, I was like charley, I can’t do it again. Maybe I will continue school some other day, maybe not. But I don’t have money now. I went home,” he elaborated.

In his quest to escape the predicament, the hapless but desperate school drop-out’s career adventure started at Kantamanto, a major market center in the capital city of Ghana, Accra, known for selling second-hand clothes. This happened when his blackberry business had failed, he hinted.

According to Elikem, he frequently visited the market to purchase shirts and with passion for designing, he altered the shirts by replacing the buttons with African designs and adding his name. “I like making clothes, I like looking different. So I go to Kantamanto, get some small money, buy a shirt and changed the buttons.

I didn’t know what I was doing. I’ll put some African print on the side. I’ll write my name, I’ll just wear it. I was in adversity, I was down but I wasn’t sleeping. I was out there doing what my mind and my heart and my spirit told me to do for myself,” he stated.

The fashion designer emphasised that this was his routine until someone noticed him wearing one of his shirts and asked him to make one for him after admiring it and through recommendation, other people began to recognise his service and started requesting similar/different kinds from him, which he offered at no cost.

Due to high patronage, he began to monetise his business and leveraging on Facebook advertisement, and the small business evolved and became popular in Ghana and beyond.

Through the money he had earned, Elikem The Tailor finally went back to the University to finish his course.

Afghanistan embassy closes in India citing lack of diplomatic support

A cyclist pedals past the Afghan Embassy in New Delhi

The embassy of Afghanistan in India, which owed its allegiance to the former West-backed government, has announced its closure, saying it would cease operations starting from October 1.

The Afghan embassy’s statement on Saturday said it wanted to reach an agreement with the Indian government to ensure that the interests of Afghans living, working, studying and doing business in India are safeguarded.

Afghans account for around one-third of the nearly 40,000 refugees registered in India, according to the United Nations’ refugee agency. But that figure excludes those who are not registered with the UN.

“There has been a significant reduction in both personnel and resources available to us, making it increasingly challenging to continue operations,” the statement said.

The closure comes more than two years after the Taliban government stormed back to power triggering the collapse of the government of President Ashraf Ghani in the wake of the US withdrawing its troops after 20 years of war and occupation.

“It is with profound sadness, regret, and disappointment that the Embassy of Afghanistan in New Delhi announces this decision to cease its operations,” the embassy said.

The decision was taken due to lack of “crucial support” from India which has hampered the embassy’s capacity to carry out the embassy’s duties, read the statement.

There were also shortcomings in meeting the expectations to best serve Afghani citizens due to “the absence of a legitimate functioning government in Kabul”, read the statement, referring to the Taliban administration.

Terrorists carry out bomb attack near government building in Ankara, Turkey says

A screen recording video from local security shows the moment of an explosion outside a Turkish Interior Ministry building on Sunday.

Two terrorists carried out a bomb attack in front of Turkey’s Interior Ministry building in the Turkish capital Ankara ahead of the opening of parliament on Sunday, authorities said.

Two police officers suffered non life-threatening injuries in the attack, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement on X, previously known as Twitter.

The attackers arrived in a light commercial vehicle in front of the building’s entrance at about 9:30 a.m. local time, Yerlikaya. One assailant blew himself up and the other was “neutralized.”

Security footage of the incident obtained by Reuters shows a vehicle slowing down on the street near the building’s gated entrance.

The vehicle comes to a stop then the driver’s side door slowly opens. One individual exits as a second emerges from the other side of the car. The second person approaches the entrance in a tactical stance, though it’s unclear if the attacker is holding a firearm, while the first hides behind the car. The assailant in motion hurries quickly past what appears to be a guard tower. A large explosion then strikes.

After, through the smoke, the contours of what appears to be the first attacker move toward the gate before the 40-second clip ends.

The apparent guard tower in front of the entrance to the building was slightly damaged in the blast. Police have since cordoned off the area, and video from the scene from CNN affiliate CNN Turk appeared to show a bomb squad searching the area for other suspicious package.

Mali crisis: Fierce fighting erupts after Tuareg rebels kill ‘more than 80 soldiers’

A 2015 peace deal with Tuareg separatists has floundered since the 2020 coup and the junta's recent expulsion of UN peacekeepers

Fierce fighting has broken out in northern Mali with Tuareg rebels saying they have taken control of the town of Bamba from the army.

It comes after the separatist fighters said they had killed more than 80 soldiers in the centre of the country.

The government confirmed an army base in the Mopti region had been targeted on Thursday, but gave no details.

The upsurge in violence comes as UN peacekeepers, deployed to Mali in 2013, withdraw on the orders of the junta.

Thursday’s raid on the town of Dioura is the most southerly one since Tuareg rebels renewed hostilities in August after the collapse of a 2015 peace deal.

This has coincided with growing violence from Islamist militant groups, despite the deployment in December 2021 of Russian Wagner Group mercenaries.

The army had already been targeted in Bamba earlier in September by al-Qaeda-linked jihadists.

In a social media post, the military said the clashes in Bamba on Sunday had begun at 06:00, describing them as “intense”. It did not name the fighters involved, only describing them as “terrorists”.

An alliance of Tuareg groups, including the Co-ordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), said in a statement that it had now taken control of the area around Bamba, a town on the left bank of the River Niger between the cities of Timbuktu and Gao.

The Tuareg rebels, who want independence for northern Mali, are opposed to the army taking control of bases vacated by the thousands of departing UN troops.

PSG held to a goalless draw by strugglers Clermont

Kylian Mbappe got an injury

Paris St-Germain have made their worst start to a season under owners Qatar Sports Investment after being held to a goalless draw by Ligue 1 strugglers Clermont.

The result means Luis Enrique’s side have 12 points after seven league games, their lowest tally at this stage of a season since the 2010-11 campaign.

Although the French champions were boosted by the return of Kylian Mbappe after he limped off in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Marseille, he had a frustrating afternoon and was booked for diving late in the game.

Clermont goalkeeper Mory Diaw, who played for PSG as a youngster, did well to deny a number of efforts from Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele before the break.

Feature: The Alan Effect: Will NPP follow after UGCC?

0
Feature

New Patriotic Party (NPP) members should, at this moment, stop attacking Alan Kyerematen and rather concentrate on those who have remain faithful and are still in the NPP. In the Gospel of John Chapter 6, Jesus Christ taught about the bread of life, emphasising that what the people need in order to gain salvation was to eat His Body and drink His Blood.

With these words, many of His disciples deserted Him. Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked “Do you also want to leave?” (John 6: 67). Peter on behalf of his brothers, pledged their commitment to Jesus and they remained with Him.

Jesus never even once condemned those who deserted Him, He rather concentrated on those following Him on His mission, here on earth and drew numbers to His side.

Today, the New Patriotic Party may be facing the same challenges that Jesus faced with the deserting of one of the party’s backbone, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen. But instead of concentrating on those left, some of the party’s gurus have decided to go after Alan and condemn him. This will not make the party any stronger, because many in the party today are facing lots of challenges and disappointments, because even though their party is in power, they live lives as if they are in opposition.

Anyone who expressed displeasure about party and government is considered to be violating some laws in the Party’s constitution and summarily disciplined. One other thing is that violence seems to be taking charge of the NPP and things which the party accused the NDC of, have become the status quo of this liberal democrat party.

Polling station executive elections which always went on, unnoticed, took the central stage of blood shedding in the recent internal elections. The Super Delegates Congress looked like a dress rehearsal of what was to be expected during the main event, the National Delegates Congress, in terms of violence.

As for moneyocracy, the least said about it the better. The Greater Accra regional executive elections showcased that. Money and half pieces of cloth were taken into the polling booths area and broadcast like a farmer broadcasting, seeds.

Before the Super Delegates Congress, it was discovered that the album (electoral register) of thirty-one out of the thirty-four constituencies in the Greater Accra Region had been tampered with, making them not credible. It was said that Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen donated GH¢500,000.00 to the Party to fix this anomaly. Allegations are that, nothing was done to fix the problem.

The question is who is playing mischief in the NPP? One could quickly point fingers at the National Executive Committee, but could it be the one? Unfortunately for these current executives, they seem to be doing voluntary jobs. No source of income for hard days work.

So, they may not be able to resist external forces from wherever they may come from. If that is the case, then what is the hidden agenda of these external forces? All things said, whoever they are, they do not have the grass root base in mind. When it matters, the grass root will be given goodies to vote in a certain way. And that they become history.

Taken the grass root for granted could lead to losing elections. They are based at the polling station areas, which are the only places that elections are conducted. Their hard work and dedication result in the party picking up victory towards electoral victory in the constituencies.

So, no polling station must be taken for granted and every party member working in a polling station is a rock and foundation for the party. Without them, there is no party. They trek the trenches to convince people that their party is the only choice. They do so because they believe that if the party wins, their lives would change for the party.

However, their party wins and forms government and nothing comes. Jobs and goodies go the other way and they wonder why. Then all they hear from a top government appointee is that the president had decreed that no job must be given to NPP persons. Someone very close to government comes out to justify this by saying, NPP believes in political neutralisation.

No problem, but of course no one will put square pegs in round holes, so when a polling station person is not qualified for a particular job, he must not be appointed into a job. All the same, what about his children or what about poverty alleviation projects to boost their income?

Feeling used and abused, this NPP person would wallow in poverty until the next elections, internal and external, when cash and goodies would arrive so that he or she is asked again to conduct themselves in a certain appropriate way.

Hon Boakye Agyarko made a solid statement that Alan’s departure from the party is not the problem. Many have departed in their hearts and would only make this evident on voting day. The neglecting of the ordinary party person is not new in the history of politics in this country and it is like Boakye Agyarko was recalling an event from our political history. And it is this:

The United Gold Coast Congress (UGCC) was founded on August 4, 1947 and it was poised to become the first political party to form government of the independent Ghana. This strong and powerful party had an Achilles Heel. Almost all of the leadership prefer not to associate themselves with the youth and commoners, except Nkrumah.

Whenever they came around Nkrumah would buy food and he will sit and eat together with them. Nkrumah’s association with the youth and commoners greatly displeased his colleagues. In August 1948, the working committee decided to suspend Nkrumah as General Secretary and offered him the post of Treasury, which he accepted in November 1948. Relations became strained and attempts of reconciliations failed. The final break came on June 11, 1949.

The youth and commoners were denied entry into the conference place and they mounted a stage outside, demanding Nkrumah came to them or they would leave the UGCC. Nkrumah initially did not want to break with the UGCC, but for the acts of the executives and the demands of the youth, he tended in his resignation and he was appointed leader by the youth.

The following day, June 12, 1949, Nkrumah announced the formation of the Convention People’s Party (CPP). It grew from strength to strength because of the large following of youth and commoners. And of course, Nkrumah had a good message which pleased them.

The results of the first General Elections of the Gold Coast, had the CPP winning34 out of the 38 elected seats in the Legislative Assembly, the UGCC taking three seats and an independent candidate won one.

One of the most remarkable victories for the CPP was at one of the Sekondi-Takoradi constituencies. A straight fight between Nana Sir Tsibu Darku IX, Omanhene of Assin Atandasu, Knight of the Order of the British Empire, a leader of the Joint Provincial Council and a senior African member of the Executive Council under the Burns Constitution, who was on the UGCC ticket and Alfred Pobee Biney, a former engine driver of the Gold Coast Railways who was on the CPP ticket. After the results were collated and declared, the commoner, Pobee Biney won almost 80% of valid votes cast, beating the elite by 51 votes to 13.

The fact was that the UGCC underrated Nkrumah as a butterfly in the wind, so it did not bother to take the trouble to recall Nkrumah to negotiate his return to the party. It took it that his CPP was going to be ignored by the people and dry out before it could even sprout. Unfortunately, the UGCC rather collapsed after the 1951 General Elections after only less than four years of formation.

In this case, if history is to repeat itself, in the case of NPP vs Alan Kyerematen as was the case of UGCC vs Kwame Nkrumah, then Alan’s strong message in his movement for change can pose problems for the Elephants. Arrogance and complacency may lead the NPP down the drain and be quickly forgotten just as the UGCC encountered in 1951.

Should the NPP come out poorly in the 2024 General Elections, it could mean the UP Tradition will die out soon after, unless another party with the Tradition’s roots is founded.

The lack of respect for the grass roots which cost the UGCC, seem to be showing its head in the NPP. The Party must as urgently as possible sit down and have a thorough deep introspection and come out with the reasons why Alan left and who else would want to go. Going about saying that Alan is finish is like burying one’s head in the sand.

Saying that no independent candidate can win presidential elections is like not accepting what happened in Benin. And to say that Alan will find it difficult to form government since at least 51% of his ministers and deputies must come from Parliament is like forgetting the rules of the game.

If Alan wins 2024 on independent ticket, all he has do is to go to the House and pick the tough nuts from both the NPP and the NDC and put them in his government. This form of unity government will make both sides perform well and they will endeavour not to have anything wrong in the government they belong to. People will then see how well the NPP and NDC can perform in government.

Will the NPP follow after the UGCC is something God should not allow to happen. But the NPP must sit up in humility and seek the right course. Blasting or insulting Alan will rather weaken the Elephant Party.

Inter thrash Salernitana to return to the top of Serie A

Martinez came off the bench to score all four goals

Lautaro Martinez came off the bench to score all four goals for Inter Milan as they thrashed Salernitana to return to the top of Serie A.

The hosts had kept Inter at bay for the first hour, but fell apart after Argentina’s Martinez came on nine minutes after the break and plundered four goals in 27 minutes, including a penalty.

Inter had dropped three points below AC Milan in the table after their rivals won 2-0 against Lazio earlier on Saturday, but returned to the summit on goal difference with 18 points from seven matches.

Christian Pulisic gave Inter the lead on the hour at the San Siro when he slammed in a bobbling pass from Rafael Leao for his third goal since joining from Chelsea.

Leao was again involved as Inter made sure of the points in the 88th minute, the Portugal winger bursting into the area before cutting the ball back for Noah Okafor to slide home.

Elsewhere, Napoli secured their second victory in four days as Victor Osimhen came off the bench and scored in a 4-0 win at Lecce, lifting the Italian champions third.

Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig in four-goals thriller

0
Harry Kane scores eighth Bundesliga goal

Harry Kane’s eighth Bundesliga goal inspired Bayern Munich to come from behind and earn a 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig. Kane has now scored nine goals in all competitions for the Bundesliga champions since his summer move from Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite being defeated 3-0 by Leipzig in the German Super Cup in August, Bayern almost had an early lead this time round, but Jamal Musiala fired tamely at Janis Blaswich.

Moments after Emil Forsberg had fired wide, Leipzig striker Lois Openda opened the scoring, rounding Sven Ulreich and slotting the ball into the net.

After the Belgian forward’s effort from a corner was thwarted, Castello Lukeba tucked home the rebound to double the hosts’ lead.

After a toothless first half, Bayern were presented with the opportunity to halve the deficit soon after the restart, when a VAR review concluded Leon Goretzka’s free-kick had struck Benjamin Heinrichs’ arm. Kane fired the resulting spot-kick into the bottom corner, and it appeared to light a fire inside the reigning champions, too.

Bayern’s increased pressure told when, after dangerous efforts from Raphael Guerreiro and Mathys Tel, Leroy Sane broke through on the counter-attack and finished devastatingly.

Bellingham scores as Real Madrid move top of La Liga

0
Jude Bellingham is the top scorer in La Liga with six goals to his name so far

Girona, who topped the table going into the latest round of La Liga fixtures, started with a spring in their step and created two golden opportunities to take the lead.

Madrid gradually found their rhythm and eventually took the lead thanks to a marvellous piece of play from Bellingham, who picked out Joselu with the outside of his right boot to give an easy finish. Tchouameni doubled Madrid’s lead four minutes later after being left completely unmarked from Toni Kroos’ inswinging corner.

Bellingham got Madrid’s third with 20 minutes remaining, finding the far corner after Paulo Gazzaniga had parried Joselu’s initial effort. The 20-year-old is only the second player to score at least six goals in his first seven La Liga matches for Madrid this century, after Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

The game ended on a sour note for the visitors as Nacho was dismissed deep into added time for a reckless challenge on Portu, who left the field on a stretcher.

Wolves devour Man City to end their perfect run

0
Hwang Hee-chan has now scored in his last four Wolves home games

Manchester City’s 100% Premier League record came to an end at Molineux as Hwang Hee-chan scored a second-half winner to give Wolves a shock victory against the champions.

City manager Pep Guardiola, forced to watch from the stands as he served a one-match touchline ban, was unable to intervene as his side failed to take control in their usual manner and free-scoring striker Erling Haaland was limited to a single chance.

Still, it did seem as though the visitors were on course to emerge victorious after Julian Alvarez curled home a brilliant free-kick to level Ruben Dias’ early own goal.

But, just as Pedro Neto had gone on a right-wing raid before the opener, Nelson Semedo’s forward surge inspired a second for Wolves, who ended a run of six straight defeats against City.

The Portugal international went on strike to secure his £53m move to City last month and the home fans evidently have not forgotten as they jeered him every time he touched the ball before he was substituted at half-time.
