Lagos State Government has suspended the annual public parades organised to celebrate Nigeria’s independence anniversary. In a statement on Sunday, the State commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the government’s decision to scrap the parade is due to economic challenges.

The government’s spokesman also said other elements associated with the anniversary celebration are suspended.

“There will be no elaborate celebration of the 63rd Independence Anniversary in Lagos. This is in line with the economic challenges of the times. The usual parades and other elements of the celebration are being shelved.

“Prayers have been held in mosques and churches to mark the anniversary,” the statement read in part.

Terrorists refuse to release captives after N17 million was paid as ransom

Residents of Janbako, an agrarian community in Maradun Local Government, Zamfara State have resorted to prayers after terrorists refused to release members of the community after collecting a ransom of N17 million and a motorcycle.

The captives have spent more than 40 days in captivity.

The residents of the community said they expected the victims to be released after the ransom was paid but the terrorists are still holding on to the captives

The terrorists attacked the community on 15 August and abducted 21 residents of the community mostly women and children.

Three days later, the terrorists reached out to the community and demanded N50 million as ransom. But residents said they couldn’t raise such a huge amount.

“They abducted my two wives, Rayyanatu and Farisha, my daughter, Halimatu and my niece, Sha’awa when they came. In all, they took about 21 people in our town, most of them being women and children,” Saidu Samaila, a resident of Janbako said.

He said he has not heard from any of his immediate family members since the abduction.

Another resident who only gave his name as Kasimu said the community met and decided to discuss the ransom demanded by the terrorists.

“When they said N50 million, we knew it would be impossible because we couldn’t gather such an amount. We’re nothing but farmers and local traders and farming is near impossible now. Even trading, how many people now go to local markets? It’s impossible because the bandits are all over the place abducting and killing people. So, we met and decided to ask them for a reduction,” Mr Kasimu, whose sister was among those abducted, said.

After a series of negotiations, the terrorists agreed to accept N17 million and a brand-new Boxer motorcycle as ransom.

Residents of the community gathered N10.5 million. They reached out to people from the community living or working in other places in the country and taxed themselves.

“When we took the money, they said we should try to get the balance before they kill our people,” a community leader, who asked not to be named for security reasons, told PREMIUM TIMES over the phone. “We had to source for the remaining N5.5 million to make it N17 million but before we took the money, they called and asked that we buy a brand new motorcycle as part of the ransom. It was a new request but we had no option.”

The community leader said seven days after the balance and the motorcycle were given to the terrorists, they are yet to release the captives.

“We’ve resorted to prayers now because we don’t know why they’re yet to release our families for us,” Mr Samaila said.

PREMIUM TIMES reached out to the police spokesperson in the state, Yazeed Abubakar, to seek more details on the development but received no response.

Investigation underway into cause of deadly blaze at Spanish nightclubs

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that tore through three adjacent nightclubs in the south-eastern Spanish city of Murcia over the weekend, killing at least 13 people.

The blaze broke out at about 6am on Sunday in La Fonda Milagros club, before spreading to the neighbouring Teatre and Golden clubs, officials said.

Francisco Jiménez, the central government’s delegate to Murcia, confirmed 13 people had died in the fire, adding that the victims included individuals with Colombian, Nicaraguan, Ecuadorian and Spanish nationality. Two people were still missing on Monday afternoon.

Murcia city council said it appeared that the Teatre and La Fonda Milagros nightclubs had been operating without a licence since January 2022 after planning concerns were raised about the decision to split the original Teatre club into two venues: Teatre and La Fonda Milagros. Antonio Navarro, Murcia’s councillor for urban planning, said the clubs had been ordered to close in October last year, adding that the council would be taking legal action against the company that owned the venues.

Turkey launches airstrikes against Kurdish militants

Police officers stand guard in Ankara following the blast

Turkey’s military carried out airstrikes targeting Kurdish militants in northern Iraq on Sunday, just hours after the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) claimed responsibility for a deadly bombing in the capital in the latest attack of its nearly four-decade long insurgency.

In a statement, the Turkish Defense Ministry said its warplanes destroyed 20 PKK targets including caves, bunkers, shelters and warehouses in the regions of Metina, Hakurk, Kandil, and Gara.

“Many terrorists were neutralized by using the maximum amount of domestic and national ammunition,” said the statement, which cited self-defense rights from Article 51 of the United Nations Charter to justify the strikes.

The PKK, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, earlier said it was behind the blast Sunday outside Turkey’s Interior Ministry building that left one dead and two injured, the pro-PKK Firat News Agency reported.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

The United Kingdom has awarded three UK companies a 4 billion pound ($4.9bn) contract to design and manufacture a nuclear-powered attack submarine as part of the country’s AUKUS programme with Australia and the United States.

The UK Ministry of Defence, in a statement on Sunday, said the contract with BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Babcock “represents a significant milestone for both the UK and the trilateral AUKUS programme as a whole”.

The new submarines, known as SSN-AUKUS, “will be the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarines ever operated” by the Royal Navy and will “combine world-leading sensors, design and weaponry in one vessel”, it said.

The first of the submarines will be delivered into service in the UK in the late 2030s and the first Australian ones will follow in the early 2040s.

The plans for SSN-AUKUS were unveiled in March by the leaders of Australia, the UK and US and came as the three countries ramp up their efforts to counter China in the Asia Pacific region.

Nobel Prize-winner to contest DR Congo presidency

2012, Nobel Prize-winner Dr Denis Mukwege

In 2012, Nobel Prize-winner Dr Denis Mukwege was attacked by gunmen – a consequence, he believes, of criticising the Democratic Republic of Congo government’s policies on gender-based violence. A decade later, living under the protection of UN peacekeepers, Dr Mukwege has launched another challenge against the nation’s leadership. He will be running for president in elections due in December, he announced on Monday.

Known as “Dr Miracle”, the 63-year-old rose to global fame for performing reconstructive surgery on women who had been raped in the country’s war-torn east. His hospital has so far treated more than 50,000 survivors of sexual violence, while he has cemented himself as one of the world’s foremost experts in his field.

Dr Mukwege was born in 1955 in Bukavu, a city in eastern DR Congo. After numerous visits to see sick members of the community with his preacher father, he decided he wanted to become a doctor. He began his training at a medical school across the border in Burundi, later studying gynaecology and obstetrics at the University of Angers in France.

Ten dead after Mexico church roof collapse

Mexican church roof collapses

At least 10 people, including three children, were killed when the roof of a church collapsed in northern Mexico. The collapse happened on Sunday afternoon local time as around 100 people were attending a baptism at Santa Cruz church in Ciudad Madero.

Sixty people were injured, at least two of them seriously, and dozens were trapped underneath the rubble. Local residents rushed to the building with shovels and pickaxes to try to free those trapped. Search and rescue teams have since arrived at the scene and two cranes are on site to remove the debris. The governor of Tamaulipas has said that all of those missing have been accounted for. Rescue workers used thermal imaging cameras to ensure no one remained under the rubble.

It is not yet clear what may have caused the collapse but the mayor of Ciudad Madero said it was probably due to “structural failures”.

Ángel Vargas, the priest who was celebrating the baptisms when the collapse occurred said that a day of celebration had turned into a tragedy.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, left, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell shake hands

The foreign ministers of all 27 European Union member states are meeting in war-torn Ukraine in their first-ever meeting outside the bloc’s borders, displaying support for Kyiv.

The unannounced meeting takes place as the Ukrainian government pushes to join the EU in the future, amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which is in its 20th month.

“I am convening today the EU Foreign Ministers in Kyiv, for the first-ever meeting of all 27 Member States outside the EU,” the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a post on social media platform X on Monday. “Ukraine’s future lies within the EU,” he added.

Top officials from EU capitals have often visited Kyiv since the beginning of the war, but this is the first time an official EU summit is being held in the Ukrainian capital.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba hailed the ministers’ meeting “within future borders” of the EU in a post on social media platform X.

“Glad to welcome EU foreign ministers at the historic meeting in Ukraine,” he said, adding: “For the first time in history, outside current EU borders. But also within its future borders.”
