Management of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) has explained why it decided to end the sponsorship of Medeama Sporting Club (Medeama SC), a Tarkwa-based Premier League Club in the Western Region.

According to the management, the Foundation realised that it was being overstretched in the area of finance with the sponsorship of the club, given that it had other equal priorities to channel investments.

The Foundation mentioned the refurbishment and upgrade of the Apinto Government Hospital, where it was channeling investment towards the critical area. The project included the construction of an Accident and Emergency Center equipped with modern diagnostic and imaging equipment such as a CT scans.

Addressing a press conference in Tarkwa, the First Executive Secretary of GFGF, Abdel Razak Yakubu, said that since 2012, the Medeama Sporting Club had benefitted from a total sponsorship package of approximately US$1,432,585 million from the Foundation.

That aside, between 2017 and 2020, the Foundation expended US$421,000 to rehabilitate the Abontiakor Park to be used exclusively by the Club as its home grounds, when the reconstruction of the T&A Park commenced.

Executive Secretary Abdel Yakubu told the press conference that in 2022, the Foundation, however, informed Medeama of ending its sponsorship following a package worth US$150,000 for the 2021/2022 Ghana Premier League Cup competitions.

“Gold Fields believes the support given to the club has gone a long way to propelling Medeama SC to where it is today. Gold Fields and its Foundation are proud to have been part of the Medeama success story, and we wish the team all the best.”

Currently, Gold Fields, Abdel Yakubu disclosed, was providing advertising package worth US$100,000.00 to the club for the African Championship League. The package covers various areas, including jersey and bus branding for a period of one year. The Foundation and Medeama, he told the conference, had agreed on GFGF logo on the sleeve of players’ jerseys, GFGF logo embossed on Medeama Sporting Club team bus, and branded pitch panels at the stadium amongst others.

Turning attention to the reconstruction of the US$16 million Tarkwa and Abosso (T&A) stadium, the Executive Secretary told the media that the project had been projected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. This was, because, there were several things to be done before the facility could be handed over to the Municipal Assembly and the National Sports Authority (NSA).

For instance, he mentioned work outstanding to include the playing pitch, external work, installation of flood lights, and completion of external cladding amongst many others.

He also mentioned the full inspection for defects to be rectified, project sign-off by the supervising engineering consultants and regulatory agencies, testing of emergencies equipment and emergency preparedness strategies amongst others as processes “we need to go through before the stadium is handed over.”

The work that is to be done before the stadium is eventually handed over parries newspaper reports that the mining company was deliberately delaying the handing over of the stadium to Medeama.

The Foundation made it clear at the press conference that, the stadium was not constructed for Medeama. According to the Executive Secretary, the stadium, when fully handed over, would become a public facility managed by the Assembly and NSA.

Robert Siaw, Regional Manager for Community Affairs, also debunk allegation that the mining company was deliberately delaying the completion of the stadium with the intent to sabotage the club.

According to him, the allegations were untrue, and given that the mine had sponsored the club since 2012 to date, he questioned what the mine would gain by sabotaging a club it had sponsored for years.

Roger Adama, Project Manager for the Stadium, conceded and explained that, though the mine had scheduled last quarter of this year for the completion of the stadium that could not come off given the work to be done.

He expressed the hope that the next projected quarter (first quarter of 2024), everything would have been done for the completion and handing over of the facility.  Present at the media encounter was Emma Morrison, Regional Manager for Public Affairs.

The journalists, mainly sports writers, were taken round the reconstructed stadium by the Project Manager.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (m) at Lagos Fashion Week

Governor Sanwo-Olu wore a beautiful light blue jacket over a plain navy black T-shirt and darker blue trousers. Pulling a confident swagger in true “man of the people” style, with a large crew surrounding him as he made his way onto and off the season’s most amazing runway, he served a magnificent fashion moment that no one would soon forget.

Lagos Fashion Week was a fashionable event, with many celebrities and fashion influencers displaying their flair and style.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bolstering the creative industry, writing on X (previously Twitter) about it.

At #LagosFashionWeek 2023, I stood proudly in the heart of a city that’s the epicentre of art, culture, and expression. Lagos is where creativity thrives. We continue to support this vibrant community because we believe in its power to transform our city and our economy.

Closing the Emmy Kasbit show yesterday, I’m reminded of how creativity isn’t just about fashion; it’s an economic force.

The Lagos Governor was present, concluded the show, and walked the catwalk for Nigerian designer Emmy Kasbit, even wearing a blazer designed by the same designer.

Suga Belly, an X user, said: “Wait, so you Lagos people invited Sanwo Olu to Lagos Fashion Week in the same October that the Lekki Toll Gate Massacre, which Sanwo Olu admitted inviting the Army to? Anyway, what did I expect? Lagos people are shallower than an Nkwobi bowl.”

VikkyVee on Instagram commented, “Sanwoolu is always going everywhere not like he is seeking reelection or something. I think he’s just a cool man.”

Advocate for Social Justice

A group, Advocate for Social Justice, has called on the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to probe the total cash declaration of Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.

The Executive Director of the group, Gamji Joseph made the call while addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

He also urged the Governor to without further delay, avail the people of Zamfara with facts and figures behind his financial deposit declarations.

He said Zamfara State is one of the most affected states on issues of insecurity, terrorism and syndicated illegal mining.

Joseph recalled that on October 17, an annual report released by ONE campaign, ranked Zamfara as the most difficult state in Nigeria to access primary healthcare services.

He lamented that the people of Zamfara have been appalled by the constant social activities of their Governor, which he alleged is centered on attending weddings and parties while citizens cower in fear of abductions and deaths.

Joseph noted that several attempts by various civil organisations to engage the state government on issues of governance and his plans on insecurity have failed woefully.

The group claimed that in its quest to unearth more about the state’s chief executive, it approached the code of conduct bureau (CCB) to ascertain background information about the state governor.

The group noted: “The documents show that the incumbent governor of Zamfara State should be listed on Forbes as one of the richest men in Africa, with cash deposit in one account alone, out of several others, showing a balance of $5 billion!!!

No plans to redenominate Naira –Central Bank clarifies

New Naira notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria has denied claims that it plans to redenominate the country’s currency, Naira, with effect from January 2023.

Isa AbdulMumin, CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, made this known on Tuesday in a statement.

The reaction of the apex bank comes following a claim suggesting it plans to redenominate the country’s legal tender.

The Bank refuted the claim, noting that it has no plan to restructure and redenominate the Naira.

“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to the wide circulation of a text message suggesting that the Bank plans to redenominate the Country’s legal tender, the Naira, with effect from January 2024.

“We are concerned that this narrative, which we had refuted before now, appears to be gaining traction with several debates on the implication of such a policy for the Nigerian economy.

“We wish to reiterate that the contents of the message are misleading. The authors of the message, in their mischief, modified text taken from an old policy move by a previous CBN Governor in 2007 to make it appear recent.

“To avoid doubt, there is currently no plan by the Bank to restructure and redenominate the Naira. Whilst the Bank may be considering reforms, such are subject to laid down procedures in line with the provisions of the CBN Act, 2007.

“The public is hereby advised to ignore the news report, as it is speculative and calculated to cause panic in the polity”, the statement contained.

NPA to consumers: Stop using wood fuel; save the environment

0

The public has been urged to avoid using charcoal and firewood as fuel for cooking to protect their health and stop degrading the environment.

A Deputy Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Perry Okudzeto, who made the call, said that people should rather use LPG as it is safer, cleaner, and healthier fuel for cooking.

He said the reduction in the use of firewood and charcoal for cooking would greatly decrease the inordinate felling and burning of trees for the production of charcoal.

That would reduce the number of harmful substances released into the atmosphere, curb rapid deforestation, and ultimately save the country’s forest cover.

Mr. Okudzeto was speaking at an LPG sensitization durbar in Sukura, a suburb of Accra on Monday.

Representatives of the Oil Sustainability Program (OSP) of Saudi Arabia attended the community engagement to observe the proceedings. Officials of the Ghana National Fire and Rescue Service provided education on the safe use of LPG and did simulations on how to put out the fire.

Mr. Okudzeto noted that the world was currently shifting toward the transition of energy supplies from fossil fuels to renewables due to climate change concerns.

He said gas had been accepted as the transition fuel and LPG is the most dependable transition cooking fuel, especially for homes as “it provides health, environmental, and economic benefits, especially to poor households.”

However, the NPA Deputy CE said LPG uptake in the country was low, around 37 percent, and must be actively promoted.

He said biomass such as firewood and charcoal were popularly used for cooking in most homes in the country.

Mr. Okudzeto said in line with the energy sector’s global and continental development agendas (United Nations Sustainable Goals 7, 11, and 13), the government had committed to providing modern, efficient, clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy for households, businesses, industries, and institutions.

In this regard, the cleanest and more accessible alternative to biomass is LPG. He said it was in that vein that the NPA had initiated an LPG sensitization and awareness campaign to encourage the use of LPG for domestic, commercial, and industrial activities is laudable.

That, he said, would be anchored on the implementation of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) by the NPA to ensure that at least 50 percent of Ghanaians have access to safe, clean, and environmentally friendly LPG by 2030.

The Director of Policy Coordination, Dr. Sheila Addo, indicated that the CRM would prevent accidents associated with the current LPG distribution model and facilitate access to the product.

Besides, she said, it would provide opportunities for businesses such as the establishment of LPG exchange points and transportation of filled cylinders to customers.

The Director of Downstream at the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Ali Abeka Nuhu, affirmed the commitment of the ministry to support efforts at promoting the use of LPG in the country.
