Storm Ciarán batters France and England, cutting 1 million off power grids

Storm Ciarán has brought hurricane-strength winds to France, the Channel Islands and southern England, leaving more than a million people without access to electricity and forcing hundreds of schools to close.

At least one person in France was killed, while 1.2 million people in the country were without power, as winds of over 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour), and gusts of more than 200kmh (124mph) hit the department of Finistère in the northwest, according to the country’s meteorological agency Meteo-France. The wind speeds broke several local records.

“The very violent winds and gusts which followed one another throughout the night had the effect of causing many trees, branches and electrical and telephone lines across the entire road network to fall to the ground,” a statement from the Finistère government said.

Around 780,000 of those without power are in the northwestern region of Brittany, French energy supplier Enedis said in a statement. Fallen trees and electricity pylons uprooted by the storm were to blame for the cuts. Enedis has mobilized around 3,000 workers and 30 helicopters to re-establish power to affected areas.

The person who was killed was hit by a falling branch while driving, according to the French Transport Minister Clément Beaune in an interview with French broadcaster Franceinfo.

The storm has also hit the British Isles and Channel Islands, where red alert warnings are in place. On the island of Jersey, all schools and the airport were closed, according to the government’s website. In the southwestern county of Cornwall, 8,500 people were without power, the local council said on X (formerly Twitter), trees were blocking dozens of roads, and more than 100 schools were closed.

Suspected mushroom poisoning: Australian woman charged with three murders

0
Erin Patterson has been charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder

An Australian woman suspected of poisoning her former in-laws and others with deadly mushrooms at a lunch she served has been charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.

Three people died after Erin Patterson, 49, served beef Wellington, a dish that includes mushrooms, to guests in July.

While three murder charges relate to the lunch, three of five attempted murder charges are linked to separate incidents between 2021-22, police say.

Ms Patterson maintains she is innocent.

She has said she did not intentionally poison her guests at the family lunch at her home in the Victoria town of Leongatha on 29 July.

Toxicology reports suggest the victims consumed deathcap mushrooms.

Her former husband Simon Patterson had also been invited to the meal, but was unable to make it at the last minute.

Along with the three murder charges, Ms Patterson has been charged with two attempted murder charges relating to the July lunch.

The police have not provided details of the two attempted murder charges. However it is known that one of the guests at the meal fell critically ill but survived.

Ms Patterson has also been charged with three counts of attempted murder linked to what police said were three separate incidents where it is alleged a 48-year-old man became ill following meals between 2021 and 2022. No further details have been given.

Israel’s army meets fierce resistance ‘at the gates of Gaza City’

This photo released by the Israeli military shows ground operations inside the Gaza Strip, on November 2

Israeli troops have advanced towards Gaza City, the enclave’s largest population centre, but are facing tough opposition from Palestinian fighters in the fight for the city as the total death toll in Gaza exceeds 9,000.

Fighters of Hamas, the group that rules Gaza, and its ally Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) jump out of tunnels to fire at incoming Israeli tanks, before slipping back into their vast underground network, residents said and videos from both groups showed on Thursday.

The guerrilla-style combat has forced Israel, which often utilises its powerful air force to hit Hamas hideouts from above, into a ground war as it seeks to overthrow the Palestinian group entirely.

The Israeli military on Thursday said it had lost the commander of its 53rd battalion in the fighting, bringing the total number of Israeli soldiers killed since it intensified its ground raid to 18.

The commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Salman Habaka, is believed to be the most senior Israeli officer killed since ground operations began in late October.

Israel said it had also killed dozens of Palestinian fighters in the offensive.

As the casualties grow, the war is also drawing closer to Gaza’s northern population hub, where Israel has ordered citizens to evacuate from or risk being seen as “terrorist accomplices”.

Israel has continued to pound the area with air raids, as military officials said they were amassing troops “at the gates of Gaza City”.

Hamas ‘well-prepared’

Israel acknowledged that Hamas was “well-prepared” for the battle, citing “minefields and booby traps” that were making access to the city difficult.

Moses and the Mediator’s Mantle:Navigating Challenges on the Journey to the Promised Land

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:7-8

INTRODUCTION

The book of Numbers picks up with the story of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the promised land where it left off in the books of Exodus. After the people built the tabernacle, they resumed their journey to the promise land, but their lack of faith in God again became evident when they complained about their condition. The complaints stirring up God’s anger, but Moses interceded on behalf of the people, and God held back his anger.

This unique relationship Moses had with God stirred up jealousy in his brother, Aaron, and his sister, Miriam. When Miriam criticized Moses’s marriage and questioned his leadership, God struck her with leprosy, banishing her from the camp. However, Moses again interceded to God for her healing. Both of these accounts remind us of the human bent toward sinfulness and our need for an intercessor, which we have in Jesus.

NUMBERS 11:1-30

Now the people began complaining openly before the Lord about hardship. When the Lord heard, his anger burned and fire from the LORD blazed among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp. Then the people cried out to Moses, and he prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down. So that place was named Taberah, because the LORD’s fire had blazed among them.

The riffraff among them had strong craving for other food. The Israelites wept again and said, who will feed us meat? We remember the free fish we ate in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. But now our appetite is gone, there’s nothing to look at but this manna!”The manna resembled coriander seed, and its appearance was like that of bdellium.

The people walked around and gathered it.They ground it on a pair of grinding stones or crushed it in a mortar, the boiled it in a cooking pot and shaped it into cakes. It tasted like a pastry cooked with the finest oil. When the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna would fall with it.

Moses heard the people, family after family, weeping at the entrance of their tents. The LORD was very angry; Moses was also provoked. So Moses asked the LORD, why have you brought such trouble on your servant? Why are you angry with me, and why do you burden me with all these people?

Did I conceive all these people”? Did I give them birth so you should tell me, ‘Carry them at you breast, as a nanny carries a baby, to the land that you swore to give their fathers? Where can I get meat to give all these people? For they are weeping to me, ‘Give us meat to eat! I can’t carry all these people by myself.

They are too much for me. If you are going to treat me like this, please kill me right now if I have found favor with you, and don’t let me see my misery anymore.”

The LORD answered Moses, “Bring me seventy men from Israel known to you as elders and officers of the people. Take them to the tent of meeting and have them stand there with you. Then I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them.

They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.“Tell the people: Consecrate yourselves in readiness for tomorrow, and you will eat meat because you wept in the LORD’S hearing, ‘Who will feed us meat? We were better off in Egypt.

‘The LORD will give you meat and you will eat. You will eat, not for one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, but for a whole month – until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes nauseating to you –because you have rejected the LORD who is among you, and wept before him.

‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’”But Moses replied, “I’m in the middle of a people with six hundred thousand foot soldiers, yet you say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat for a month.’ If flocks and herds were slaughtered for them, would they have enough? Or if all the fish in the sea were caught for them, would they have enough?”

The Lord answered Moses, “Is the LORD’S arm weak? Now you will see whether or not what I have promised will happen to you. “Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD. He brought seventy men from the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent.

Then the LORD descended in the cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and placed the Spirit on the seventy elders. As the Spirit rested on them, theyprophesied, but they never did it again.

Two men had remained in the camp, one named Eldad and the otherMedad; the Spirit rested on them – they were among those listed, but had not gone out to the tent –and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

Joshua son of Nun, assistant to Moses since his youth, responded, “Moses, myLord, stop them!” But Moses asked him, “Are you jealous on my account? If only all the LORD’s people were prophets and then LORD would place his Spirit on them! “Then Moses returned to the camp with the elders of Israel.

CONCLUSION

Revelation has often caused controversy among God’s people. Humble Moses’s unique position as the authoritative mediator of God’s revelation aroused jealousy in his own family. God told them he did reveal Himself to other prophets (Ex 15:20) through dreams and visions, but only Moses was permitted direct access to God.

Thus God confirmed the authority of Moses’s teaching over that of anyone who dared oppose him. The bible reveals Jesus Christ as the perfect Mediator (1 Tm 2:5, Heb 8:6,9:15,12:24) through whom all believers have direct access to God.

Let’s embrace right leadership for society to survive -Abbey

Resource persons, stakeholders and students in a group photograph

Dr. Victor Abbey, a Leadership Consultant and Convener of the LURA 2023 Summit, has stated that the only way society could survive the economic challenges was to choose the right leadership.

According to him, leadership was not about position or degree, but how one leads and relates with people, adding that the world was moving faster, and “we must put our shoulders to the wheel in our own small communities and look for credible leadership in our part of the world.”

Speaking at the Learn, Unlearn and Accelerate (LURA) 2023 Summit, organised for some selected Senior High School (SHS) students and some military officers from the Central Command Barracks at the Prempeh Assembly Hall last Friday in Kumasi, Dr. Abbey noted that one needed the requisite skills to move forward, especially the students who were the future leaders.

The LURA 2023 Summit was under the theme, “Promoting Selflessness and Timeless Leadership Skills for Sustainable Development.”

Dr. Abbey challenged them to make life-changing opportunities while being selfless in their leadership roles that would change society, whether one was worthy or in the process to become a leader.

According to him, leaders must not discriminate, and must have faith, hope and resilience, sensitive and discerning, humility, and love team members, adding that unity in purpose and mentorship, and not abandoning the young ones as leaders, whether in challenging times or not.

Dr. Farouk Khaillann, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Premium Holding, also advocated continuous learning so that what happens to the world does not have a negative impact, but rather help with growth.

He stressed the need for the youth, as potential future leaders, to make reading a habit, since social media was taking away that habit.

According to him, leadership was about accountability, and for that matter, one needed to always account to the subordinates, and that right from home and as children, one needed to find out from parents when things were not going right between them.

He challenged the youth to start something small, because business was the only avenue to change the economy.

The Premium Holding CEO noted that those with the idea of corporate governance had to help the young people to be in the shoes of the outgoing leadership, and advised them to embrace partnerships.

According to Dr. Khaillann, failure was a blessing to ensure that one understood what worked and what did not, adding that self-development was very important in terms of doing business.

Brigadier General Kwadwo Frimpong (Rtd), as Chairman for the Summit, tasked the participants to learn leadership, as new things happened in management. He stated that the world would not wait for Ghana, for which we must always learn.

Feature: William Atuguba, Please Come Again!

On Tuesday October 24, 2023, a former Supreme Court justice, William Atuguba, delivered a lecture at the University of Ghana at an event organised by Solidare Ghana on the theme: Protecting our Democracy, the Role of the Judiciary.

His twenty-four-page long speech dealt a lot about the judiciary system in Ghana, but very little about himself. He was able to bring out what he thought were faults of other judges but cleverly hid his own.

He said there were perceptions of political inclinations on the part of some judges and here he cleverly excluded his very self, even though in his speech he could not hid from the fact he is a political animal.

Justice Atuguba pointed out what was behind the rulings made against the Busia Administration in the Court of Appeal in April 1970 in the case of Sallah vs The Attorney General. Two of the judges were biased (corrupt) and attempts to get them replaced failed. Justice Apaloo was a very close friend of the plaintiff and Justice Sowah was influenced by his brother-in-law’s wife to make sure that Sallah won the case.

Instead of reviewing the judgment, as he did with the Gyekye Quayson’s case, William Atuguba’s political bias came to play by informing us of Busia’s response that‘no court can enforce any decision that seeks to compel the government to employ or re-employ anyone.’Anyway, did Busia violate any law by laying off workers?

Art. 140 of the 1969 Constitution which gave the power of appointment to a public officer, and the Prime Minister was the top public officer.

Atuguba did not tell Ghanaians that the dismissal of workers in 1970 was couched in the 1969 Constitution prepared under the NLC government where some workers were to be dismissed for wrong conducts. A person in the calibre of Justice William Atuguba certainly could not have forgotten all these. Is he being politically inclined, as to protecting his political lineage?

How could the renowned judge claim that President Kufuor came out with executive intimidation when he gave notice to overturn the Fast-Track court verdict which went against him and go on to compare it to the institutional murder of three high court judges and a retired army officer during the Rawlings’ PNDC era?

Was Atuguba not aware that the Fast TrackCourt system was introduced by the NDC before Kufuor took over? Was a former NDC minister not jailed for financial malfeasance in the Fast Track Court deal?Unlike Nkrumah who would have dismiss the judges from office, Kufuor used the same legal process to seek review.

William Atuguba gave glowing tributes to Chief Justice Akufo-Addo and even went on to state that even though he served as Supreme Court judge for a total of five years, he excelled with distinction in judicial service. He cleverly run away from the reasons Akufo-Addo was dismissed by Nkrumah. This would have condemned Nkrumah, and this Atuguba did not want.

After the overthrow of Nkrumah, as William Atuguba stated, the judiciary came under much criticism for the role it played under the CPP administration. He could have continued to express dismay in some judges who came out with landmark judgments against the Busia Administration after tasting freedom for the first time.

Judges like Apaloo and Sowah were biased and set aside what was in the constitution to give the judgment, they did. Talking about setting aside the Constitution and William Atuguba can be a good example.

The former Supreme Court judge did not educate us on what happened to the judiciary in Ghana during the first republic. He needed to explain to us whether for the sake of democracy it was good for Nkrumah to dismiss judges who came out with verdicts not pleasing to him. Why should he overlook the Nkrumah days?

The way William Atuguba tore, to shreds the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Gyekye Quayson, one is tempted to ask whether if he was on the panel and differed from the rest, would he come public to condemn the majority?

Going round to establish that once Gyekye Quayson produced a certificate of denunciation of his Canadian citizenship before Election Day 2020, he should have been allowed to go through, is unfair to justice.

There are three major steps to taking up employment after the job had been advertised. They are interview, appointment letter and date to start work. In the advert, requirements are stated, like academic qualification and years of experience.

The first step is to attend interview, where the requirements will be scrutinized among other things. And here, one cannot say he is yet to acquire this or that certificate to prove he is qualified for the job. Once he does not haveall the requirements,he is out, and cannot proceed further to the next stages.

In the case under review, step one is the submission of nomination papers, step two is Election Day and step three is the inauguration of Parliament. So, it does not make sense for someone to be admitted as qualifying to stand elections when they have not satisfied all the requirements.

In the Gyekye Quayson case, the judicial precedent on time for qualification and eligibility under Article 94 (1), an authority can be found in the Republic v. High Court (General Jurisdiction), Accra; Ex Parte Zanetor Rawlings (Ashittey and National Democratic Congress.

In this case, Zanetor’s election as parliamentary candidate for NDC in the Korle Klottey constituency was challenged on the grounds that she was not a registered voter and thus fell short of the eligibility requirements of Art 94 (1).

The issue went to court and the Supreme Court ruling in her favour, said the Art. 94 (1) becomes operative at the time the Electoral Commission, commences the statutory processes for nomination and filing for parliamentary candidates and not at the time of primaries by political parties.

In other words, the day of filing of nomination would determine the eligibility of the candidate and not any other time.

Talking about the birth certificate no longer being a legal proof of nationality is a case to be passionately discussed. We need a base document as the form of national identification and the birth certificate is supposed to be the one.

However, how authentic can it be, if the only proof of identity of the parents’ nationality, which would become the baby’s nationality, is just word of mouth? Before we condemn the Supreme Court, we must think this through and come with a solution.

William Atuguba is saying that the mode of nominating people to the bench should not be determined by the president but solely by an independent body because as things stand President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed only his cronies to the bench. Where from this? Is it only when the courts rule in favour of the NPP that the judges on the panel are cronies of the president?

If this is to be accepted as the norm, then how come that with seven out of the nine judges on the 2012 Presidential Elections Petition, who were appointed by an NPP government, the verdict returned 4-5 against the NPP?  And an NDC appointee, Justice Yaw Appau, once ruled against the NDC in a recent case?

I may not always agree with the rulings from the courts but where I disagree, I will never ascribe cronyism or other vices. This current system is okay, since the final approving authority is the House of Parliament.

And the House has rejected an appointee or two, before. Unless William Atuguba will prove that Parliament is a corrupt institution. How sacrosanct will an independent body be in solely appointing judges to our courts, when most likely some members will have their favourites.

Justice William Anaam Atuguba came into the limelight when he headed the panel of nine judges to deal with the 2012 Presidential Petition. That was when all of Ghana got to know him. Why he never discussed his conduct during the eight-month long case, in his lecture at Legon, is very obvious.

One day in court, he bellowed and announced to all Ghanaians that he was more powerful than the president. Is it what our 1992 Constitution states?

The Supreme Court dragged three NPP members and one NDC member before it for making contemptuous statements about the proceedings in court. When the Supreme Court was petitioned about another NDC member who also made contemptuous statements, William Atuguba told us that the petition was not properly written so the man was left off the hook. Explanations are needed here.

When he was about to read the judgment in August 2013, William Atuguba said that nowhere in Africa had results of elections in favour of the ruling party, been overturned in court, and Ghana cannot be the exception.

William Atuguba in his lectures, quoted one Dr. Lawrence who said in Ghana, the Judiciary is gradually becoming a thin god, allowing them to pass some outrageous judgments. Unfortunately, Atuguba’s pronouncement that he was the most powerful man in Ghana makes him a tin god.

Then in order to make sure that the plaintiff lost his case, he did what the Supreme Court did in 1970, when Art. 140 of the 1969 Constitution was set aside. Atuguba also set aside Art. 49 (3) of the 1992 Constitution which made it mandatory for the presiding officer at the polling station to sign the results slip.

Thousands of presiding officers did not sign the declaration and that was an integral part of the petition. If William Atuguba had been honest and fair, and accepted that the wrong thing was done, the plaintiff would have won the petition.

This act directly reflects his quotation from Prof. Date-Bah on page 18, which stated that “this must be a cause of worry to students and practitioners of Constitutional Law.”For William Atuguba to publish Dr. Lawrence statement that only John Mahama can come and lead the process to repair the judicial system in Ghana, clearly betrays his political lineage.

If there have been problems with some judges in this country, it is about their selfish ways of doing things and not about the system of appointment.

William Atuguba had the opportunity to speak on the judiciary from 1957 to date but cleverly left out areas that would injure his political lineage. His attempt was to condemn the UP Tradition and rewrite history. His presentation did not treat the topic fairly at all. It was more of a propaganda campaign for the NDC. And is William Atuguba saying Ghanaians must kick against transfer of judges? Please Justice William Anaam Atuguba, come again.

Hamza Issah is like Romario- Hearts coach praises 21 year old forward

0
Hearts coach embracing Hamza Issah

Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club head coach, Martin Koopman, has doubled down on his belief that Hearts forward Hamza Issah plays like Romario.

Romario is a retired Brazilian football legend who starred in and won the 1994 FIFA World Cup and played for FC Barcelona in Spain.

He said this after watching Issah score a brace in Hearts 3-1 win over Medeama in the 2023-2024 BetPawa Premier League Week 8 fixture.

However, Issah missed out on the chance to register a hat-trick in the game as he had to leave the game after the first half due to a stomach issue.

“It was a pity that Hamza was sick at half time, he had a little problem with his stomach…so I must change him but you see the qualities of Hamza.”

“He has something from Romario, low on the ground, turns very fast. I like him very much. It was a pity that we had to change him but all the other players did a very good job.”

Weekend European League Matches

Atletico Madrid take on Las Palmastoday

Atletico Madrid will be bidding to make it seven straight wins in La Liga when they travel to Estadio Gran Canaria on Friday evening to take on Las Palmas.

Diego Simeone‘s side are third in the table, three points behind leaders Real Madrid with a game in hand, while Las Palmas occupy 10th, boasting 14 points from their opening 11 matches of the campaign. Las Palmas struggled in the early stages of the campaign, winning just one of their opening seven La Liga matches, but they have been in excellent form over the last month, boasting four wins from their last five games in all competitions.

As is often the case, a lot of the focus in La Liga this season has been on Real Madrid and Barcelona, meaning that Atletico’s excellent start has somewhat gone under the radar.

Simeone’s side have won eight, drawn one and lost one of their 10 league games this season to sit third in the table on 25 points, only three points behind leaders Real Madrid with a match to spare.

Atletico have won their last six in the league, with the team responding impressively to their 3-0 loss at Valencia in the middle of September, which was undoubtedly the low-point of their campaign thus far.

Both teams have been strong defensively this season, while Las Palmas have found it difficult to hit the back of the net, so we are predicting a low-scoring away win here.

Can morale-depleted Man Unitedmake amends against Fulham

With their crisis worsening by the week, a morale-depleted Manchester United team seek to make amends for a disastrous few days when they meet Fulham at Craven Cottage in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff.

Manchester United players

If the Old Trafford panic button had not already been pressed after a harrowing 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City, Red Devils chiefs’ fingers may now be hovering dangerously above the red switch after Newcastle subjected the Red Devils to an identical pummelling in the EFL Cup.Three wins, three draws and four losses in the Premier League so far can certainly be described as a mixed bag for Manchester United.

Breaching the Ipswich backline was not a problem for Fulham, but the Tractor Boys have struggled for defensive solidity all season long.Whether Muniz can solve the hosts’ attacking conundrum in the long-term remains to be seen, but with several well-rested Man United players desperate to prove a point at Craven Cottage, we have faith in Ten Hag’s men to get back on track and condemn the Cottagers to a fourth defeat in a row in this fixture.

Newcastle, Arsenal in blockbuster battle at St James’ Park

On the back of contrasting evenings in the EFL Cup, Newcastle United and Arsenal return to Premier League duty with a blockbuster battle at St James’ Park on Saturday evening.

Newcastle players

While the Magpies eased past holders Manchester United 3-0 on Wednesday evening, the Gunners’ knockout run came to an end with a 3-1 fourth-round beating at the hands of West Ham United.

The hosts are more than capable of putting a dent in Arsenal’s title aspirations while boosting their own hopes of glory, though, as Newcastle have won each of their last three Premier League home games without conceding, recovering the defensive nous that made them quite the force to be reckoned with in 2022-23.

Newcastle’s Old Trafford exploits are even more commendable when taking Howe’s team selection into account, as the Magpies rested several regular starters. Both sides will be recalling integral performers to their starting XI, but with the Magpies flaunting a resolute defence at home and Arsenal boasting an unparalleled rearguard streak on the road, we can only envisage a low-scoring affair ending all square as the Gunners prolong their unbeaten top-flight record.

Bologna in a home encounter against Lazioon Friday

Fresh from their Coppa Italia second-round success in midweek, Bologna return to Serie A action with a home encounter against Lazio at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara on Friday night.

Bologna players

While the hosts currently sit eighth in the Italian top-flight standings, the visitors are just one place and one point above their upcoming opponents in seventh.

Bologna extended their impressive unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 matches when they secured a 2-0 home victory over 10-man Hellas Verona in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday, setting up a last-16 tie with holders Inter Milan next month.

Lazio boasted the second-best away record in Serie A last season en route to securing second place, but they have since endured a mixed start on the road this term, winning two – including a 2-1 success at champions Napoli – and losing three of their first five top-flight away matches.

The Eagles will fancy their chances of claiming a positive result on Friday, though, as they have only lost two of their last 20 top-flight games against Bologna

A goalless stalemate was played out the last time these two teams butted heads in March, and another closely-fought contest could be on the cards.

Accra Lions roar louder against Heart of Lions

Accra Lions return to winning ways with an impressive performance to beat Heart of Lions 2-1.

First-half goals from Ali Mohammed and Daniel Awuni were enough for the host to collect all three points, despite a second-half consolation from Christian Agyemang.

Accra Lions got off to a bright start after Bernard Kesse came close to giving them the lead following a neatly weaved pass from Baba Apiiga.

Two minutes later, Accra Lions were rewarded a freekick at the edge of the box, which was taken by Apiiga, with Hearts of Lions goalkeeper failing to grab it for the first time as Mohammed fired home for the opener after 12 minutes.

The home side doubled their advantage after a brilliant inter-play between Awuni and Kesse resulted in the winger clinically putting the ball at the back of the net.

Awuni almost made it three before half-time but his strike from outside the box went wide.

After the break, the visitors improved their game as they chased a consolation but it was the host that got the better chances with defender Ali Mohammed and second-half substitute Mohammed Yahaya coming close.

Heart of Lions pulled one back from Christian Agyemang with 15 minutes remaining.
