Trobu MP touts achievements

0
Mr Moses Anim, MP for Tromu

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears for its nationwide parliamentary primaries on Saturday, one of the sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Greater Accra Region is determined to retain his seat and lead the campaign to ‘break the eight’ for the party.

Mr Moses Anim, MP for Trobu and Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has made it clear in an interview that he has served the party very well at the constituency, regional and national levels, for which he deserves another term.

He urged the delegates to do him the honour by electing him as the parliamentary candidate on Saturday, to retain the seat for the NPP.

The MP for Trobu said he has served the people in the constituency very well and is providing for their needs, regardless of the post Covid challenges.

According to Mr Anim, his constituency, which used to be part of the hitherto Ga Rural district, can no longer be regarded as such because of the rebuilding of social infrastructure in Trobu.

He said he has managed with his share of the Common Fund and support from the government and donors, as well as from his resourcefulness to provide health, education, water and sanitation and road infrastructure, to open up the constituency to the rest of the country.

The MP named some of the projects he has executed in the health sector to include the Amamorley hospital, provided equipment for the Atiato, Pokuase Anglican and Amanfrom clinics. He said he has also donated clinical equipment to the Ga North Municipal hospital at Ofankor, power plant to the Ga North Municipal hospital, patient monitors to Amasaman hospital and a printer and canning machine to the Ga North Health Directorate.

In the education sector, Mr Anim named some of the projects as; furniture for basic schools and the St John’s Grammar SHS and the provision of nursery blocks with GETFUND support at Afiaman Basic School, Abensu, Nii Otoo Kwame Basic School, Ofankor MA Basic school and a nursery complex at Usman Bon.

Others are six classroom blocks at the Sylvanus Basic School at Pokuase, Atiato Basic School and Amamorley Basic School, as well as one storey six classroom blocks at the St Joseph’s Basic School, M7 Basic School, as well as nursery blocks at the Ayawaso Quarry Basic School and Asofan Basic School which are ongoing.

He said through his initiatives, he was able to secure GETFUND scholarships for some tertiary students in the constituency.

Mr Anim said roads in the constituency have not been neglected, as he was able to secure support for asphaltic overlay from GOIL filling station at Tantra to Fishpond, Mile Seven and New Achimota to Achimota Neoplan, linking Nii Boi Town, Ofankor roundabout to Asofan and Ofankor Atta Mills junction, through Sowutuom to the N1 highway.

He named other road works to include bituminous sealing from Atiato Pokuase Awoshie junction, through Atiato to White House at Agya Herbal, John Teye branch road through Franco Estate, to link Pokuase Kwabeny road, Victoria College road linking High Speed school through to Pokuase cemetery.

The Sowutuom road branching to Mensah Addo school through Omanjor to Omanjor lorry station and the three junction through Ga Odumase to Ga Odumase Amamorley junction linking the Pokuase Awoshie highway and the Pokusse Festus through Amanfrom to link Three junction to Ga Odumase  Amamorley road.

He also mentioned some ongoing road projects to include; Pokuase to Nsakyi road, Abensu junction to Abensu to Allosam, Pokuase Mayera junction through Afiaman Mayera Adusa road, Fise Railway crossing through W O and linking Mericrescent School to Transformer at Amanfrom.

Seven Days road to link Asofan, Fried Rice Junction to Apedwa House road and Yellow House roads to link the  Ofankor cemetery road.

Touching on water supply, Mr Anim mentioned the provision of boreholes at Fise near the Mericrescent School, Abensu Agric quarters, boreholes at Afiaman Olympic stadium, Adofan Mother Rebecca community, Ofankor, near Church of Rabbi and Asofan Yahwe community.

The MP said he has also initiated storm drains and bridges projects to address the floods menace and accessibility in the constituency, saying ” these projects, which are at various stages of completion are located at  Ofankor North, Ofankor Cocoa Powder, Tantra Rockster Factory to link the Muus Timber Market to the Ofankor cemetery.

Mr Anim said as at 2016, fairly good roads in his constituency were only nine percent, but by 2020, this had gone up to 30 percent indicating that because he had initiated many projects, he deemed it necessary to offer himself again to represent Trobu in Parliament from 2025.

Mr Anim said he also spearheaded the recruitment of some youth to work in government institutions in the country and companies working on construction projects in the country.

He appealed to the delegates to renew his mandate to continue to represent Trobu in Parliament because, “I am convinced I have served them well. Please do not change someone who understands your needs and aspirations, “he appealed to the NPP delegates.

Feature: Where Are The Elders Of The New Patriotic Party?

Proverbs 22:26: Manhyia v Wontumi

If there is any political party that will have clashes with the Asanteman Kingdom, it should not have been the New Patriotic Party.

Asanteman led by its kings have been principled ever since this kingdom was founded. It was through one of its principled ways that the National Liberation Movement (NLM) was founded on September 19, 1954. Initially, a CPP stronghold, Asanteman turned against Nkrumah when it found that he was not been genuine, principled and truthful to the state.

Nkrumah came and started imposing chiefs on the people, with some not even in the line of succession. This, Asanteman would not accept.

Democracy gave every adult, the right to choose who should lead them. Nkrumah on the other hand, began imposing legislators on the people. This, Asanteman would not accept.

The Ashanti region at that time covered the current Ashanti, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions and it was the most populated region in Ghana and yet Nkrumah made sure fewer constituencies were created for the region. This was not acceptable to Asanteman.

Nkrumah promised in a campaign message to increase the producer price of cocoa, but after he won elections, he decreased the price and hedged it over four years. With the bulk of cocoa farmers coming from Asanteman, the people were very much disappointed and Asanteman did not take lightly to this.

Out these reasons, majority of CPP members, including political giants like Victor Owusu, R.R. Amponsah and Joe Appiah, defected to join the National Liberation Movement, which had the blessing of the king of Asanteman. In October 1957, the NLM joined five other parties to form the United Party (UP).

The UP and its descendants, the Progress Party, the Popular Front Party and the New Patriotic Party became the political soul of Asanteman, who stood firmly behind them through thick and thin.

Rawlings attempted to break up the UP Tradition in more ways than one but failed. The only way to break up Asanteman was to break up businesses and industries owned by Asantes, he thought. Because murdering of prominent Asantes, and dehumanising of chiefs, could not break the Asantes bondwith the UP Tradition, Rawlings attacked and collapsed businesses and industries belonging to Asantes.

Asante owned businesses and industries crushed by the Rawlings’ administration included those belonging to Appiah-Menka, Dr. Safo-Adu, Edward Osei Boakye, B.A. Mensah and Kwabena Darko among others.

In 1992, Ashanti region proved its love and loyalty to the UP Tradition and became the only region that voted for the New Patriotic Party and has consistently been voting massively for the NPP. That Ashanti region and Asanteman has remained very faithful to the NPP, is an understatement.

Unfortunately, this era of NPP administration is not returning that gesture, taking things for granted that no matter what happens, at least 70% of Ashanti region will vote for the party’s presidential candidate.

In Proverbs 22: 26, the Word of God says, “train up the way a child must go and when he grows, he will not depart from it.”

In 2014, a young man called Bernard Antwi Boasiako, then aged 36, became the Ashanti regional chairman of the NPP, when he beat Hon Kwame Osei Prempeh by 559 against 209 votes.

Calling himself, Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti regional chairman, displays an unorthodox approach when addressing issues. This was always seen as a sign of disrespect, but as he never attacked the top hierarchy of the party, the elders seem to always applaud and maybe, even cheer him on.

A position that was once held by very eminent gentlemen, like Dr. Kwame Donkor Fordwor and Appiah Menka, should be seen to be always occupied by people with such character. Unfortunately, the elders of NPP could not put Wontumi on a leash and were seemly seen to be urging him on as he descended heavily and crudely on persons perceived to be their “enemies.”

Wontumicould flout party rules and no one would call him to order. But let another party member do same and he or she will be lucky not to be suspended. Suddenly, it was like Wontumi was the national chairman of the NPP. Some of the things he did and said were wrong and he should have received suspension, but no one dared to attack him.

He had the support from those behind the scene who want to make NPP, their property. Wontumi could slap a Member of Parliament, Hon Collins Owusu Amankwa (Manhyia North), and get away with it.

The NPP Council of Elders were not able to invite him and demand from him why disciplinary measures should not be taken against him for his criminal assault on a state legislator.

Whenever one looks on and supports the waywardness of his child, one day that child would bring problems home.

So it iswhen, it was alleged that Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka Wontumi believing he is king over all, dared the One Who Should Not Be Dared; the King Who Is Acknowledged As Such By The Rest Of The World;the King Who Is Not Boastful Or Proud But The Air Around Him Always Blows Out Power And Authority, the Occupant Of The Golden Stool, the One And Only Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.

Wontumi was said to have challenged the authority of the Asantehene, by making pronouncements, which is similar to some things he used to say in the NPP circles.

When Manhyia heard this and anger started energising itself from the Palace, the Kumasi Traditional Council and the whole of Asanteman, suddenly all the elders of the NPP who may always benefit from Wontumi’s diatribes were now missing. No one is standing on the same platform with him, any more. I guess, they must now be scolding him and saying, “but you also went too far.”

The NPP had to push its general secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, to face a council of very angry chiefs led by the state warlord, the Bantamahene,Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI,and pleaded that by Monday January 29, 2024, the party will deliver Wontumi.

This should not have happened, because if there is any region that the NPP should disrespect, then it should not be the Ashanti region. If the party accords respect to traditional leaders and regions all over the country, it beats the mind that the party could lead a member on and allow him todisrespect the Golden Stool. One cannot claim to own a kingdom in Asanteman since that is an affront to the Asantehene.

The New Patriotic Party is no longer like it was before. The respect and discipline that was the hallmark of the party in the 90’s and early 2000’s has now disappeared and look like going extinct.

The powers-that-be who hide in the background and push members on to do their dirty jobs, should know the disservice they are doing to the party in general and those members in particular.

In recent days, personalities like Paul Adom-Otchere and Hon Sylvester Tetteh could come on air and speak like polling station social commentators, spewing insults in the most uncultured and uncouth manner on people of higher standing like the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Dampare, the Special Persecutor, Kissi Agyebeng and internationally renowned cardiologist, Dr. Frimpong Boateng.

Today, we have people in the NPP who feel they have godparents within the party so they can do and say whatever pleases them. Such people believe that the only way to win arguments is to lie, insult and use very abusive languages.

What is happening to Bernard AntwiBoasiako today, should be a great lesson to such characters in the party.

Wontumi crossed borders and entered into a territory which does not take such irresponsibility lightly and he is going to face the music. The lesson here is that, the NPP is not going to defend him, but rather it is going to hand him over to the “judge”, to be dealt with accordingly.

This should make those who are on the same tangent as Wontumi, to start thinking about themselves and know that whatever support they have in the party that energises them to do as they please, the party will not be there whenever they get into trouble.

It is about time that elders of party start repairing damages in the party. All those who urge the youth on, to misconduct themselves should bow their heads down in shame and repent their ways. They should endeavour to make their conducts good examples to the younger ones. They should be principled and decent and let people speak highly of themselves with respect.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, could violate sacred rules in the NPP Constitution and no one could call him to book. Not even the national chairman or NEC who have powers to take decisions for the party. In 2015, NEC overturned the decision of the highest decision-making body of party, the National Delegates Conference who in 2014, elected Paul Afoko, Sammy Crabbe and Kwabena Agyepong asnational chairman, 2nd vice chairman and general secretary, and handed them suspension.

If the NEC can make such decisions, how come it could not tame members like Wontumi?

The NPP through Wontumi, has dishonoured the only region that is its stronghold. The Ashanti region and Asanteman has been slapped in the face by the very party they hold in high esteem. What will happen in December 2024? If only the elders of NPP had understood the wisdom in Proverbs 22: 26 and implemented it, this would not have happened.

Manchester Utd Martial out for 10 weeks after groin surgery

0
Anthony Martial

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial will be sidelined for around 10 weeks following “successful” groin surgery, the club have confirmed.

The 28-year-old has not featured for United since the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth on 9 December.

The injury rules Martial out until April, with the Frenchman’s United contract due to expire in the summer.

“We wish Anthony a speedy recovery and look forward to his return,” United said in a statement. Martial was absent through illness over Christmas, before the groin injury was identified, and has missed United’s past seven games across all competitions.

The former Monaco forward has scored just once in the Premier League in 13 appearances this season, and only played in 28 of United’s 62 matches last season.

Martial signed for United from Monaco in 2015 for £36m, but a drop in form saw him loaned out to Sevilla for the 2021-22 season.

Managing Everton was harder than Chelsea job -Frank Lampard reveals

0
Lampard reflects on his struggles at Goodison Park

Frank Lampard claimed managing Everton was a tougher task for him than managing Chelsea because he was battling the ‘Wild West’ at Goodison Park.

Lampard was ruthlessly sacked by Everton after less than a year in charge in January 2023.

They were sat second bottom of the Premier League when he was shown the door and he has now opened up on where things went wrong on Merseyside.

‘At Everton in the end, there were a lot of issues in and around it – we all know that there was an issue between the fans and the board at the time,’ Lampard, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, said.

‘I was on the phone a lot in the evenings, trying to connect with the owner, chairman, CEO, then go in and do the day job the next day. During this time, I found it an intense period.’

He would go on to take over at Chelsea for a second time, this time on an interim basis and given it was a temporary post, the pressure was, at least somewhat, off in Lampard’s head.

‘I didn’t find Chelsea as difficult, personally, because I knew it was finite, it was going to be six or seven weeks,’ he said.

‘I learnt very quickly in my head, what the issues were there, and they were not my issues to solve long term. I don’t want to sound like I palmed them off, it’s just that you want results, but at the same time if you go into a place where there are a lot of problems here, can I turn it around in nine games when motivation has just gone down?

‘I came to peace with that a little bit – I wanted to win games because it was my reputation on the line, but at the same time I wasn’t so bad. Probably at the end of Everton would be the biggest spell where it’s been a challenge, but it makes you a better person.’

Not long before Lampard was axed he battled what he has termed the ‘Wild West’, the January transfer window.

‘The minute January came, it was like the Wild West,’ he said.

‘Agents, and everyone, it was all about what it was going to be and who we could bring in.

‘We were struggling to spend money because of the FFP situation, but I desperately wanted to bring in some players, and in the end after I’d left, where Sean Dyche came in the back end [of the season], he couldn’t make any moves anyways and Anthony Gordon left the club.

‘There was a lot of tension at the club through that and I think it would have been a build up over the past few years, I felt it from the minute I came in until the minute I left – it was almost like we were in a crisis but there is going to be another crisis, it was quite difficult.’

Lampard would go on to tell Gary Neville and Co about his confusion around Farhad Moshiri’s plan at Everton, and why he is enjoying his time away from management.

‘When you’re unemployed, as such, everyone thinks you’re available every day and I just like being at home to be honest,’ he said.

‘I’ve been happy out the game and watching a lot of football, doing all those things.’

Maddison back to Tottenham after 3-months out with ankle injury

0
Maddison back to Tottenham

James Maddison is back in training with Tottenham after two-and-a-half months out injured.

The midfielder picked up an ankle issue during Spurs’ 4-1 loss to Chelsea on November 6, and was substituted at half time with manager Ange Postecoglou revealing the news after the match.

There were concerns Maddison was facing a lengthy injury lay-off, but he seems set to return to action around three months after sustaining the issue.

Maddison, who joined Tottenham from Leicester for £45million from relegated Leicester in the summer, has picked up three goals and six assists in 11 Premier League appearances so far.

Spurs will be hoping he can pick up from where he left off upon his return to action, which could come as soon as his side’s Premier League game against Brentford on Wednesday.

Maddison, 27, has been central to Spurs’ progression under Postecoglou, and was a vital player in the Australian’s system before his injury late last year.

As a result, he has missed 10 Premier League matches but will be hoping that those days are behind him for the foreseeable future.

Algeria coach at a loss to explain painful Afcon elimination

0
Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi

Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi cut a disconsolate figure as he assessed a second successive group stage exit from the Africa Cup of Nations for the 2019 winners following the shock 1-0 loss to Mauritania in their final Group D clash on Tuesday. Belmadi, who also failed to take the Algerians to the World Cup in Qatar following a dramatic playoff loss to Cameroon, was left to rue missed chances as he left the question about his future open.

“If we concede a lot of chances, I would say that’s where the problem comes from,” he said. “But I can’t explain why we can’t win. We have to be more clinical, we hit the post, we never managed to make a break, we never calmed down. If it’s the end of the cycle? Maybe.”

Belmadi says he expected much more from his players, especially after their group stage exit in Cameroon two years ago.

“No, I didn’t expect this to be like the last one. There is no way. Difficult, yes, but not with this sad ending. What’s next? I’m not going to tell you that. Keep trying, but I have people to talk to first.”

He also defended his record since taking the job in 2018, which included that Cup of Nations victory in 2019.

Ivory Coast sack Jean-Louis Gasset as coach

0
Jean-Louis Gasset

Jean-Louis Gasset has been sacked as coach of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations hosts Ivory Coast two days after their 4-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea.

It was the heaviest home defeat in Ivory Coast history and they are the first Afcon host to lose two group games since they did so in 1984.

The Elephants still carry faint hopes of progressing to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

They will be led by Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches, on an interim basis.

The country’s football federation said it had “terminated the contracts” of 70-year-old Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant “due to insufficient results”.

Ivory Coast finished the pool stage on three points in Group A having also lost 1-0 to Nigeria following a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau in their opening match.

The hosts must now wait on the results of the last group games on Wednesday to see if they sneak through.

Their hopes of progressing despite their shock defeat in Abidjan were boosted when Group B ended with Ghana finishing third in the table on two points.

Former Bordeaux coach Gasset was appointed by the federation in May 2022, replacing his compatriot Patrice Beaumelle.

Beaumelle’s contract was not renewed after the Elephants missed out on 2022 World Cup qualification and exited the last Nations Cup in Cameroon.

Saintfiet resigns as Gambia coach following Afcon exit

0
Tom Saintfiet has resigned as Gambia coach

Tom Saintfiet, the coach of Gambia, has promptly resigned following their elimination from AFCON 2023.

The 50-year-old Belgian coach made the decision after Gambia failed to secure any points in the group stage, experiencing a 3-2 defeat against Cameroon in their concluding match.

Despite initially taking the lead, Cameroon’s Christopher Wooh sealed their victory with a late free-kick, propelling them to the next round.

Gambia concluded the group phase without earning a single point, having lost all three games against Senegal, Guinea, and Cameroon.

Expressing gratitude to the Football Association and his staff, Saintfiet declared, “This was my last match as coach of Gambia. My contract expires in August 2026, but I step down.”

Despite leading Gambia to the quarter-finals in the previous AFCON, where they lost to the hosts, Saintfiet chose to conclude his tenure prematurely due to the disappointing campaign in Cote d’Ivoire.

Having guided Gambia to their inaugural AFCON appearance two years ago, the experienced tactician opted to part ways, citing the timing and his dedication to the nation.

“Thank you for your service,” the Gambia Football Federation said on to our nation, by qualifying for two consecutive CANs, which was no coincidence. We wish him good luck.”

Ghana sack boss Chris Hughton after group-stage exit

0
Chris Hughton

Ghana have sacked coach Chris Hughton after their group-stage exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars finished on two points in Group B, drawing 2-2 with both Egypt and Mozambique following a 2-1 defeat by Cape Verde in their opener.

Ghana had distant hopes of progressing as one of four best-ranked third placed sides, but were eliminated on Tuesday when results went against them.

Hughton had been appointed as Ghana head coach in February last year.

“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said., external

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Former Newcastle United and Brighton boss Hughton began working as a technical adviser for the four-time continental champions in February 2022.

He replaced Otto Addo as boss after Addo stepped down following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana finished bottom of Group H with one win from three matches.

Ghana also exited the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon at the group stage, and the West Africans suffered the same fate in Ivory Coast.

The GFA said it was “100%” behind Hughton after a fan had a “verbal altercation” with the coach following their shock defeat by Cape Verde.

It had looked like the 65-year-old would guide the Black Stars to the last 16, with Ghana sitting second in Group B while holding a 2-0 lead over Mozambique in their final group game.

However, the Mambas scored twice in second-half stoppage time to clinch an unlikely draw which ultimately sent the Ghanaians home.

The West Africans had also endured a mixed start to 2026 World Cup qualifiers under Hughton, beating Madagascar with a stoppage-time goal before losing 1-0 in Comoros.
