Russian woman jailed for 27 years for cafe bomb killing

0
Darya Trepova

Russian woman Darya Trepova has been sentenced to 27 years in jail for the killing of pro-war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky last April.

Tatarsky was killed by a bomb in a statuette Trepova gave him, as he was about to give a talk in St Petersburg. Dozens were injured in the blast.

Trepova, 26, denied the charges, saying she thought the statuette contained a listening device.

She said she had acted on the orders of a Ukrainian contact, and was set up.

The sentence is one of the harshest imposed on a woman in Russia’s history.

The attack on Tatarsky, 40, (real name Maxim Fomin) happened on 2 April, 2023.

Trepova was charged with “a terrorist act carried out by an organised group causing intentional death” and the “illegal possession of explosive devices by an organised group”.

Russian investigators have accused Ukraine of being behind the attack, and Ukrainian officials have neither confirmed nor denied this. But Trepova gave evidence in court that she was following orders from a man in Ukraine known as Gestalt (German for “shape”). His identity is not known.

Norway to assist in tax funds transfer between Israel and Palestine

0
Foreign Minister of Norway, Espen Barth Eide

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide says Norway has agreed to act as an intermediary to help unfreeze tax funds earmarked for the Palestinian Authority (PA) that are held by Israel.

Under the terms of a deal reached in the 1990s, Israel collects tax on behalf of the Palestinians and makes monthly transfers to the PA pending the approval of the Ministry of Finance. But since November, taxes that would ordinarily be sent to the Gaza Strip have been frozen by the Israeli government.

On Sunday, Israel approved a plan for the taxes to be held by Norway instead of transferred to the PA.

“Work is now under way to try to establish the framework for such a solution. We are in dialogue with both the Israeli and Palestinian authorities and other stakeholders,” Barth Eide told Reuters, without giving further details.

He also expressed deep concern about the PA’s financial situation, which he described as “grave”.

What to Eat (or Not) When Your Stomach Hurts

0

What to Eat

When your stomach hurts, cramps, or you feel like you might throw up, the last thing you want to do is eat something that makes it worse. It can be even harder to know what to try if you’ve been vomiting or have diarrhea. But some foods can give you nutrients you need without making you feel worse.

Start With Liquids

If you can’t keep solid food down, there’s no point in trying to eat. Things like sports drinks, clear broth, or coconut water have minerals you need like potassium, calcium, and sodium (salt).

Try: Bananas

They’re easy to digest and have lots of potassium — an important mineral you may start to lose if you have diarrhea or have been vomiting.

Try: Rice

Make sure it’s plain white rice. Wild, brown, or black rice — generally healthy — are harder to digest, especially on an upset stomach. Starchy, low-fiber foods like white rice also can help firm up your stool and stop the diarrhea that can come along with stomach trouble.

Try: Applesauce

It’s easy to digest and has plenty of nutrients, including pectin — a kind of fiber that dissolves in water. It can add bulk to your stool and help get rid of your diarrhea.

Try: Toast

Simple white-bread toast is better than fiber-rich whole grains when you have an upset stomach. Whole grain has a kind of fiber that’s good when you’re not sick, but it can make an unhappy tummy worse, especially if you have diarrhea or nausea.

Next Steps

If those foods stay down, you can start to branch out to things like baked potatoes and maybe some boneless, skinless chicken breast. Once you’re feeling better and haven’t thrown up or had diarrhea in 24 to 48 hours, you can try to add in some fruits and vegetables.

Don’t Eat: Dairy

Milk, cheese, and ice cream are all no-no’s with an upset stomach. They’re hard for your body to digest, in part because they’re high in fat. Plain, nonfat yogurt may be OK sometimes, but start with a little and see how it goes.

Don’t Eat: Fried Foods

These have lots of oil and fat, so they’re harder to digest. Fried foods aren’t great for you even when you’re healthy, but they can make an already upset stomach even worse.

Don’t Drink: Soda

The bubbles can be a problem because gas gets into your digestive system. And if lots of sugar hits you all at once, it can make diarrhea worse. Small sips of a flat soda may be OK.

Don’t Eat: Spicy Food

It’s probably the last thing you feel like having with an upset stomach — and there’s a reason for that. Your digestive system may have to work harder to digest it, and that can make your rumbly tummy worse. Stick to the bland stuff until you feel better.

Don’t Eat: Raw Fruits and Vegetables

They’re great when you’re healthy. But when you have an upset stomach, the fiber in them — which normally makes your poop easy to pass — can make things worse. It’s best to wait until you feel better to add them back into your diet. Start with small portions of cooked vegetables and juices.

Keep Your Belly Happy

A balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can help keep your digestive system healthy and your immune system strong and ready to fight off bugs that might upset your stomach. And watch for triggers — anything from foods that have acid like tomatoes, to fizzy drinks, to stress at work.

When to Call Your Doctor

Everyone gets an upset stomach from time to time, but talk to your doctor if you’re losing weight without trying, you don’t have much of an appetite, you’re fatigued or have cramping, bleeding, pain, or other symptoms, or it goes on for too long.

Nam1 created ‘playboy’ office for customers -Witness

0
Court

Nana Appiah Mensah, alias Nam1, is alleged to have created an office by name ‘playboy’ and directed customers to make payments before their investments with Men’s Gold and Brew Consultant would be released to them.

Fred Odame Aseidu, fourth prosecution witness (PW4) and a customer of the defunct companies of Nam1, testified before the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Ernest Owusu-Dapaa, that in order for his investment to be released to him, he was required to acquire a card for the validation.

Nevertheless, none of these steps he took yielded a desirable result, as his investments are still locked up in Menz Gold and Brew Consult.

The following is the cross examination;

Q. Please give your full name to the court.
A. My name is Fred Odame Aseidu.
Q. What work do you do?

A. I’m a trader.
Q. Do you know Nana Appiah Mensah, alias Nam 1?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you know Menz Gold Ghana Company?
A. Yes.
Q. Do you also know Brew Marketing Consultant?

A. Yes.
Q. In respect of these three; Nam 1, Menz Gold Company Limited and Brew Consult, did you cause a witness statement to be made for you?

A. Yes.
Q. Take a look at this statement and turn to the last page, can you identify your name and signature?

A. Yes, I have my name and signature on it.
Q. Please tell the court the date you signed on the witness statement?

A. It was signed on 25th October, 2023.
Prosecution: We wish that the witness of Fred Odame is adopted by the court.
Counsel: No objection.
Court: Let the witness statement of Fred Asiedu, filed on November 16, 2023 at 11:07am be admitted as his evidence in chief and so adopted.
(The witness read his witness statement to the court. Indicating that he has a shop at Kantamanto and invested money to the tune of GH¢1.2 million in Menz Gold and Brew Consultant)
Cross Examination by Defence Counsel

Q. So on 25th October, 2023 you gave your statement to the Ghana Police Service?
A. Yes.
Q. Where was it taken?
A. At the Police Headquarters.
Q. And it was the same day that you also signed a witness statement with the Attorney-General?
A. Yes.

Counsel tenders the statement through the witness;
Court: The statement given by the witness to the police on October 25, 2023 is marked as Exhibit A4.
Q. Your signature appears at the bottom of Exhibit A4?

A. That is so.
Q. I’m suggesting to you that this statement was not given to the Ghana Police Service?
A. I gave it to the Ghana Police Service.
Q. The Ghana Police Service has not signed onto the statement you tendered today?

A. I cannot tell why the police did not sign, but the Exhibit is a form from the Ghana Police Service.
Q. There is no evidence that this statement was given to the police?
A. I visited the police headquarters myself and I gave them my statement.
Q: The events you complained about in Exhibit A4 occurred in 2018 and the date in Exhibit A4 is 25th October, 2023, five years later.

A. Yes, before then I had already lodged a complaint with the Police. The reason I lodged the complaint was that I realised there was deceit in my dealings with A2 & A3.
Q. On 25th October, 2023 you did not make a legitimate complaint with the police?

A. I lodged a complaint with the police because I realised there was deceit in my dealing with the accused person. It compounds our problem.
Q. There is no evidence before this court that you made a previous complaint to the police?

A: The first time I went to the police, I was given a form and I wrote the amount Menz Gold was supposed to pay me. And that was my first time visiting the police headquarters.
Eventually, l realised that I have been deceived in the business.

The first complaint was not official. The reason why the complaint was not official was because I was given a form and I write all the debt A2 owes me. My lord, I apologise for saying that the first complaint was not official because it was not written as the one on 25th October 2023 when I went to the police.

Q. You just told the court that you went to police to make a complaint because after 5 years, you now feel that you were being deceived?

A. Yes. After 2018 and 2019 he (Nam1) asked us to do validation, whereby I presented all my documents and all this while I thought the transaction were genuine. Later on, he introduced something called playboy and we were directed to the playboy office to make payment, after which our monies will be paid to us. All this still while l though it was genuine.

He further introduced another card for validation and it was after I bought this card that I realised that I was being deceived. That is why from 2018 to 2023, I have not sent the matter to the police. This was because every year he introduces something new. That is why it took me this long to make the complaint.

Q. Please show to the witness Exhibit A4. It is in your own handwriting?
A. No. It was written for me and I signed.
Q. Whoever wrote it down for you did not sign?
A. My lord, the person who wrote the statement for me is not my witness.

Q. Please, look at Exhibit A4 and tell the court, which part of the exhibit reflects your words about being deceived?

A. I did not write deceit but I made the complaint.
Since 2018, if the business he was running was not deceitful, he would have paid us our money.

The Biblical Names And Titles Of Jesus Christ (Part 1)

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy.

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. – Colossians 1:15-20.

INTRODUCTION

Throughout Scripture, we discover that names hold significant value and meaning. They tell us something specific about someone’s character. The name of Jesus is significant. We see this in the angel’s message to Mary in Luke 26:31-32a; You will become pregnant, give birth to a son, and name Him Jesus. He will be a great man and will be called the Son of the Most High.

By looking closely at the labels used throughout the Bible to describe Jesus, we can discover a new appreciation for the ways Jesus ministers to us. A wealth of information concerning His person and work can be obtained from studying the names and titles ascribed to Him. Some of them are:

  1. ADAM; “So it is written: The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. – 1 Corinthians 15:45
  2. ADVOCATE; My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. – 1 John 2:1

  7. AUTHOR; fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:2
  8. ALPHA; “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. – Revelations 1:8
  9. BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHETR; The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:14
  10. BISHOP; For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. – 1 Peter 2:25
  11. BLESSED; which God will bring about in His own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, – 1 Timothy 6:15
  12. BELOVED; To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. – Ephesians 1:6
  13. BRIGHT MORNING STAR; I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give youthis testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star. – Revelations 22:16
  14. CARPENTER; Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s name Mary, and aren’t His brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? – Matthew 13:55

Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry City battle at Hillsborough

0
Coventry City players

In a replay of Saturday’s Championship contest, Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City will again do battle at Hillsborough on Friday with an FA Cup round-of-16 place on the line.

The visitors picked up a 2-1 win in South Yorkshire to complete a league double over their hosts, with both sides now battling for a place in the final 16 of the FA Cup.

Sheffield Wednesday will return to FA Cup action on Friday with the aim of advancing to the round of 16 for the first time since the 2019-20 season, after advancing through the third round in emphatic fashion early this year.

Coventry City also entered this year’s iteration of the FA Cup in the third round and advanced in similarly dominant fashion to the Owls.

That result came in the midst of an impressive league run for Mark Robins‘s side, who have quickly scaled the Championship table with a nine-match unbeaten streak producing six victories including two triumphs over Friday’s opponents,

Now sitting sixth in the Championship thanks to their climb, and having gone unbeaten for 10 matches and picked up four straight wins in all competitions, Coventry City will set out to again get the better of Sheffield Wednesday on Friday and further add to a promising season with a victory to advance in the FA Cup.

We expect both sides to rotate heavily for the clash at Hillsborough, and given the visitors have more quality and depth throughout their squad, we back them to make it back-to-back wins in South Yorkshire and advance on Friday.

Nottingham Forest travel away to face Bristol City

0
Nottingham Forest players

Nottingham Forest travel to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City in one of four FA Cup fourth round ties on Friday night.

Liam Manning‘s side were the only lower-league club to knock out a Premier League side in the third round, as they got the better of West Ham United in a replay here.

Tommy Conway was the hero for Bristol City, as it was his early strike in a replay last Tuesday that sealed their place in the fourth round.

It was also his goal at the London Stadium which forced the tie to a replay, and the Robins will now welcome another Premier League side to Ashton Gate.

The two clubs have recent history considering they shared the same division for many years, and Forest got the better of Bristol City in both meetings during their promotion campaign in 2021-22. That was under the since-departed Steve Cooper though, and even though results have been hit-and-miss under Nuno Espirito Santo, Forest have been incredibly entertaining to watch.

With Forest potentially lacking options in attacking areas, they may struggle to impose their superiority on Bristol City in an intriguing cup tie.

The visitors are also without a clean sheet in 12 games, so Bristol City can expect to create chances, but may still need some individual inspiration like they got against West Ham.

Tottenham host Manchester City in mouthwatering contest

Tottenham host Manchester City

Arguably the pick of the FA Cup fourth-round ties, Tottenham Hotspur host defending champions Manchester City in Friday’s mouthwatering North London contest.

The Lilywhites edged past Burnley 1-0 to earn a date with the treble winners, who began their quest for back-to-back titles with a 5-0 drubbing of Huddersfield Town in the third round.

With no European trophy to compete for and an early EFL Cup exit representing the first blot on Ange Postecoglou‘s notebook, the FA Cup is Tottenham’s best hope of ending their unsightly 16-year streak without a piece of silverware, unless the capital giants enjoy an unexpected Premier League title renaissance in the coming months.

City on the other hand commenced their bid for back-to-back FA Cup crowns with a customary Etihad annihilation of lower-tier opposition, putting five past Huddersfield Town without reply to kick off the New Year in emphatic fashion.

After an engrossing and controversial six-goal stalemate between Tottenham and Man City at the Etihad in December, another goal-laden contest ought to be on the menu on Friday, especially with both clubs enjoying the luxury of a weekend off following all-action top-flight affairs.

Owing to Tottenham’s midfield shortages, Man City’s scoring hoodoo at Spurs’ headquarters should finally be banished, but an unwanted replay may be required to determine which heavyweight punches their ticket to the fifth round.

Aston Villa storm Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea

0
Chelsea players

Still on track for a domestic cup double, Chelsea seek a spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup when Aston Villa travel to Stamford Bridge on Friday evening.

The Blues will compete for EFL Cup glory thanks to a 6-1 battering of Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, while their visitors coincidentally overcame the same opponents in FA Cup round three.

Before the Blues faithful can get overly excited about a EFL Cup Wembley sojourn, Pochettino’s men have an FA Cup fourth-round tie to win after they cruised past Preston North End 4-0 in their opening encounter, and it has been nine years since Chelsea were last forced to exit in the fourth round.

Still rebuilding the Stamford Bridge walls, Chelsea’s crushing of Middlesbrough represented the Blues’ seventh home win on the trot across all competitions, and the hosts are also on an eight-game Stamford Bridge winning streak in the FA Cup, but a perpetual knockout specialist will be barking orders from the visiting dugout this week.

Not since 2010 have Chelsea and Villa shared the spoils in a goalless draw, though, and the Lions also clinched back-to-back wins and back-to-back clean sheets over the Blues at Stamford Bridge in 2023, offering hope to the visiting faithful that Emery’s crop can subject the EFL Cup finalists to a rude awakening.
