Tunisian police destroy migrant camp by UN office

Migrant camp

Police in Tunisia’s capital have forcefully removed homeless sub-Saharan Africans who had been camping outside UN buildings in Tunis for several weeks.

Many black Africans have been seeking repatriation after recent remarks by President Kais Saied unleashed a wave of violence against them.

He denies inciting hatred by saying they were part of a conspiracy to change the demographic composition of the North African country, which has a predominantly Arab-Muslim culture.

What followed was a crackdown on migrants with many subjected to detentions, abuse and evictions from their houses.

Journalists have been tweeting from the scene of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) office, saying a camp where migrants had gathered has been completely destroyed.

“Police have arrested many people, and having spoken to one migrant, he says he cannot find his wife and child now,” tweeted freelance journalist Elizia Volkmann, adding that many of them were registered refugees.

“Lawyers are investigating where those arrested have been taken,” she said.

Teargas was reportedly fired and batons used to remove people.

“Devastation here. The camp’s destroyed, with people’s goods being taken away as rubbish,” another freelance journalist Simon Cordall tweeted.

It is not clear how many people were camped outside the UNHCR.

Ivory Coast, Guinea and Burkina Faso are among countries which have organised the repatriation of their citizens over the last month in the wake of the race row.

Hernia permanently treatment without surgery at home

Umbilical-hernia and femoral hernia

A hernia is a medical condition that occurs due to the weakening of muscle tissues in an organ near the abdomen causing the intestine or tissues to protrude through the weak spots nearby.

Hernia

Mostly, a hernia can occur in the abdomen between the chest and hips but can also appear in the upper thigh and groin areas.

How Does Hernia Form?

A hernia forms when muscle tissues become weak or ruptured, causing internal organs like the intestines to protrude. Hernias can be classified into two categories which are, acquired and congenital.

What Are The 6 Types of Hernias?

Inguinal/Groin Hernia

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles.

Umbilical Hernia

An umbilical hernia occurs when part of your intestine bulges through the opening in your abdominal muscles near your bellybutton (navel).

Incisional Hernia

An incisional hernia is a protrusion of tissue that forms at the site of a healing surgical scar. This type of hernia accounts for 15-20 percent of all abdominal hernias

Femoral Hernia

A femoral hernia usually occurs when fatty tissue or a part of your bowel pokes through into your groin at the top of your inner thigh.

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of your stomach bulges through the large muscle separating your abdomen and chest (diaphragm).

Epigastric Hernia

An epigastric hernia is a lump in the midline between your belly button and sternum (breastbone) which can cause pain.

What Are The Causes Of Hernia?

  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Increased physical exertion in the abdomen
  • Heavy and frequent coughing or sneezing
  • Heavy or regular weightlifting
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Some of them revolve around smoking, poor nutrition, chronic constipation, consuming tobacco etc.

What Are The Symptoms Of Hernia?

  • A small lump initially in the affected area
  • Discomfort or pain in the groin or abdomen while performing physical activities
  • Discomfort while coughing or sneezing
  • Constipation
  • Discomfort while walking, sitting
  • Burning and aching sensations in the abdomen of groin
  • The lump might disappear or get reduced in size while lying down

In the past, if you had a hernia, you would have to go through surgery to fix it. However, the surgical side effects for hernia is dangerous and potentially deadly.

Feature: The Season of Politics & Politicking is Here!

0
John Dramani Mahama, former President of Ghana and Dr. Kwabena Dufuor, Minister of Finance in the Mills Administration

A nine-year-old boy talking to the father asks a pertinent question one evening, according to a tik-tok received via WhatsApp, just before the Easter holidays.

“Daddy, what is politics?” The father is initially shocked by the kind of question coming from the kid.

He rakes his memory before attempting an answer.

“Son, let me put it this way. I have to provide for you, so I am the capitalist. You are the people. Your mother who keeps the house-keeping money is the Government. The babysitter is the working class and your baby brother is the future. Do you understand?”

The boy cannot make out the jig-saw and simply says: “Well…I think so,” and tucks himself in bed and sleeps.

While sleeping, he hears his baby brother crying. He goes to peep through the window and finds the baby’s diaper in a mess. The boy tries to communicate with his mother and finds her deeply asleep. He decides not to disturb her.

He tries to alert the babysitter and peeps through her window only to see his daddy having an affair with her. He decides not to disturb them either and goes back to bed and sleeps.

At the breakfast table the next morning, the boy enthusiastically approaches the father. “Daddy, I think know what is politics.”

The enthusiastic father welcomes the son’s ability to understand such a complex issue and invites him to share his knowledge with the family. “Tell us in your own small way, what is politics.”

“Well,” the boy begins. “It is something like this…Whiles the Government is asleep, the capitalist screws the working class. The people are ignored while the future is in a mess.”

It is that kind of season again.  Politics is all over in the air. Those seeking the people’s mandate are on the road making all sorts of promises. ‘Bosheaba’ John Dramani Mahama was the first to lace his boots and hit the road.

The former Head of State began his campaign with a huge promise at Ho, the Volta Regional capital, where Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, officially listed as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, was denied audience with Togbe Afede, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, in a dramatic event that still resonates with political gimmicks than a chieftaincy issue.

Mr. Mahama, though, is not a newcomer to promises. In the 2020 election campaign he drew the wrath of the various Zongo and Muslim communities by promising to build mortuaries for them in the country to preserve their dead. At the time he made that promise, I do not believe he was unaware of the need to dispatch the Muslim dead to the Father in time to have audience with the Creator of Heaven and Earth, in line with Koranic teachings.

Needless to state, the controversies raised by the ‘Mortuary for Muslims’ pledge is still unresolved. John, the campaign strategist, then incurred the displeasure of the Christian communities in this Land of Our Birth by hinging his campaign on John 3:16 in the Christian Holy book. “For God so loved the World that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him would not perish, but have eternal life.”

It is not known as I composed this piece, whether or not John 3:16 would be revived on the campaign trial as we head towards December 7, 2024. One thing is certain, ‘Boshieba’ Mahama is still in the promising mood.

At Ho in the Volta Region, where the airport, constructed under his watch, is now a white elephant, Mr. Mahama promised to cancel ex-gratia paid to Article 71 office holders after their term of office. One significant thing about this promise is that at the time Mr. Mahama made this promise, he knew, or ought to have known, that he is the single highest recipient of ex-gratia in the political evolution of this Land of Our Birth.

The former resident of Jubilee House is on record to have received ex-gratia as a Member of Parliament (four times at the last count.)  The former MP for Bole/Bamboi was also paid ex-gratia as a Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President, and President of the Republic of Ghana.

When he was defeated at the polls in the presidential race of 2016, he laughed all the way to the bank, while officials of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) were gnashing their teeth at the loss. Mr. Mahama was paid a whopping GH¢245,000 in ex-gratia for being retired as head of state of this country. What has still not been resolved is whether or not a person who has been retired constitutionally and been paid his entitlement as such, could return to the body politic without any effort at returning the retirement benefit.  All the same, Ghanaians welcome his decision to delete ex-gratia as a political requirement for Article 71 office holders.

As a sign of goodwill, one man suggested on radio that the ex-Head of State should return all that he had previously taken in the name of ex-gratia to serve as a goodwill gesture and his determination to end what he himself identified as a drain on the national resources.

Sadly, the man calling for an end to ex-gratia hit the roofs in anger. Calling such suggestions ‘silly’ – the statesman seeking to return to Government House, turned his anger on those making demands on him to return what he has collected in the name of something he himself is pledging to eliminate.

Politics, as the small boy suggests in our opening paragraphs, is when capitalists screws the working class, while the Government is asleep. “The people are ignored, while the future is in a mess.”

Politics and politicking is in season. It promises to be very active.

Whiles Mr. John Mahama promises to abolish ex-gratia, and ironically gets annoyed at the suggestion to return the quantum of money paid in the name of an Article 71 office holder, his main challenger for the NDC presidential slot, is also in the art of promising. Dr. Kwabena Dufuor, Minister of Finance in the Mills Administration, has thrown down the gauntlet in a bid to defeat Dramani, the John 3:16.

Within the NDC, foot soldiers refer to Dr. Dufuor as ‘Ahotor.’ It stems from the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana’s financial donation to the grassroots. He has now upped his game, promising to pay party office workers around the country monthly wages, if he is given the nod. What has still not been resolved, under umbrella politics, is how the man making those promises is going to redeem these pledges if he ever makes it to Jubilee House. Would the payments come from his private pocket or the public purse? It is one huge question waiting for answers.

We are yet to hear by way of promises from Mr. Kojo Bonsu, the former boss of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, who once courted trouble for himself by claiming, in huge billboard advertisements, that the entire Asanteman had welcomed him to the land of the Golden Stool, at a time when his authority did not reach Mampongten.

While the NDC’s promises are still unresolved, the route to power under the Elephant is getting even more intense. So far, nine aspirants are on the campaign trail. The two front-runners are, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the sitting Vice-President, and his immediate challenger, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, immediate past Minister of Trade and Energy, and are being trailed by seven other campaigners.

These are Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who has resigned his position as Minister of Agriculture to contest the Presidency, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, one-time Minister of Energy, Dr. Kofi Konadu Aprako, one-time MP for Offinso, Mr. Francis Nimo, who was serving at a point in time as MP for Asante Mampong, Mr. Joe Ghartey, immediate past Minister of Railway Development, and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a very fine communicator and one-time Press Secretary to President John Agyekum Kufuor.

When I saw a huge bill-board the other day advertising the presidential ambitions of my good friend, Kwabena Agyapong, I screamed to the hearing of people nearby: “Money swine.” Whether or not he has the resources to finish the race is one issue that makes politics the art of convincing the majority of the people to believe in you, even when you fall short of expectations.

I shall return!

Mario Balotelli’s wild ride at the Etihad His car impounded 27 times, fined £100,000 in one MONTH, rows with Mancini

Mario Balotelli

A former Manchester City kitman has revealed hilarious tales from Mario Balotelli‘s stint at the club, including the backstory to the Italian’s infamous ‘Why Always Me?’ shirt.

Balotelli, who now plays for Swiss Super League club Sion, spent three years at City and became renowned for his conduct both on and off the pitch.

From setting off fireworks inside in his own house to a long list of unpaid parking fines, the Italian was about as unpredictable as they come.

And, on a recent podcast, even more details about the striker’s habits in Manchester have been revealed – including the story surrounding his celebration against Man United in their famous 6-1 win at Old Trafford.

Appearing on the Ninety Three Twenty Podcast, ex-City kitman Les Chapman said: ‘Every morning we used to go to this little area at the back of the dressing rooms. There was this little area with a few tables where you could have a tea or coffee.

‘He’d have one my fags – I used to smoke then – and he’d probably have two cigarettes, one after the other. Never brought his own. He must have had 80 packets and 70 lighters but never got me one cigarette.

‘This particular day Mario took me around and said “I want this printed on my shirt, what do you think?” I said yeah I’ll print it up, but [I told him] you can’t have anything that’s offensive to United fans or anybody really.

‘He came out with one or two things and I said “No, Mario” and then he said “what about why always me?” As soon as he said it I thought that’s just about perfect and then I got in trouble after the game.

‘They wouldn’t let me print anymore shirts after that game because instead of just lifting his shirt up to there, he lifted it over his head and got booked so David Platt said “message from Mancini, don’t print anymore shirts”.

‘After five minutes it had gone global so Mario said to me “Get onto Umbro, we want commission on this stuff being sold”. So I rang Umbro and requested and they said “we can’t do anything about it”.

‘He came out with it and it’s the most ideal thing he could have said.’

Balotelli brandished the shirt during Man City’s 6-1 win over rivals Man United in the 2011-12 campaign.

The Italian scored twice in the game, including the opening goal, and celebrated it by looking unimpressed and revealing the message on an undershirt.

It came as a reponse to recent media reports surrounding the forward. Just one day before that match, Balotelli had made headlines for setting fireworks off in his home.

A friend of the millionaire footballer set off dozens of fireworks from ‘multi-shot barrage cannons’ in his first floor bathroom a decade ago, starting a serious blaze.

Later that week, the Italian forward was unveiled as Greater Manchester’s ambassador for firework safety.

Real Madrid, Chelsea lock horns in Champions League quarter-final

The last two winners of Europe’s most coveted footballing prize lock horns in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, as holders Real Madrid play host to Chelsea.

Carlo Ancelotti reunites with his former club after overseeing a 6-2 aggregate win over Liverpool in the last 16, while the Blues overcame a first-leg deficit to defeat Borussia Dortmund 2-1.

Amid talk of a shock return to the Stamford Bridge dugout as the Blues hierarchy search high and low for a new permanent head coach, wily Real Madrid manager Ancelotti has a fab five in his sights as he looks to add to his glistening continental trophy haul.

The four-time Champions League-winning manager typically showed no signs of panic when Liverpool roared into a 2-0 lead at Anfield during their last-16 first leg, as Los Blancos left the Anfield crowd shell-shocked by scoring five without reply before a slender 1-0 win at the Bernabeu got the job done with minimal fuss.

Not since an astonishing 3-0 loss to CSKA Moscow in December 2018 have Real failed to score in a Champions League home match, and each of their last five European games at the Bernabeu has ended in victory, but there are no prizes for guessing who inflicted Los Blancos’ last continental loss in front of the sea of white shirts.

The second managerial baptism of fire for Frank Lampard was expected to take place at the Bernabeu rather than Molineux, but there was no new manager bounce for a toothless Chelsea side on Saturday, as Wolverhampton Wanderers ruined the Englishman’s Premier League homecoming.

The 2022-23 season marks the third time in a row that Chelsea have reached the Champions League quarter-finals, and the Blues have remarkably not lost to the defending champions since being put to the sword by Porto in 2004-05 – winning two and drawing four for the longest-ever unbeaten streak against the European cup holders.

Fans were treated to a blockbuster quarter-final between Real Madrid and Chelsea last year, where a 3-2 Bernabeu win was in vain for the Blues as Real advanced 5-3 on aggregate to end the West London club’s defence of their crown. Exactly 365 days on from triumphing in the Spanish capital, Lampard and co will commence an identical revenge mission.

Villarreal proved that Ancelotti’s men are far from watertight at the back, but Los Blancos rested several big-name stars at the weekend and should feel wholly confident of gleaning a healthy first-leg lead before a trip to Stamford Bridge next week.

AC Milan welcome first-time quarter-finalists Napoli to San Siro

A clash of Calcio titans plays out on the continental stage this Wednesday, as seven-time European champions AC Milan welcome first-time quarter-finalists Napoli to San Siro.

Osimhen will be missing

In the teams’ first-ever Champions League meeting, Milan will aim to emulate their four-goal victory in Naples earlier this month, while their visitors – surely soon to succeed the Rossoneri as Italian champions – seek to continue some scintillating form in Europe’s top club competition.

Though the defence of their Scudetto has not gone entirely to plan, as Wednesday’s opponents have streaked clear at the top of the table, Milan have still managed to navigate their way to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2012.

Ahead of their first leg contest this week, the Rossoneri preserved their place in Italy’s top four with a grim goalless draw at home to Empoli last Friday.

Napoli will prefer to focus on the fact that Milan have won just three of their 16 most recent Champions League knockout matches, failing to score in 10.

Without the totemic presence of star striker Victor Osimhen, though – due to an injury sustained on Nigeria duty – they stumbled badly when meeting Milan at Stadio Maradona two weeks ago.

Having just won their seventh straight Serie A away fixture, Napoli may expect to continue their recent dominance over Milan at San Siro. However, absences could blunt a prolific attack enough for the Rossoneri to shut them out for the second time in a fortnight – setting up a tantalising return in Naples next week.

Official presentation of samples of the environmental management logistics to authorities

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Maritime Authority, and the stakeholders of the ABS Fishing Harbour in Sekondi Takoradi have collaboratively stepped up efforts to ensure the Fishing Harbour is clean at all times.

Following a series of engagements with by the Port Authority and the Maritime Authority, the fisher folk have recently demonstrated a commitment to this cause.

Members of the Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association(GIFA), Canoe Fishers Association, the GPRTU, Fish Market Mammies and the Essikado Chief Fisherman, all operating from the ABS Fishing Harbour in Sekondi, have donated environmental management logistics in support of the joint effort.

The Essikado Chief Fisherman acknowledge the need for the joint effort and assured the authorities of each boat owner’s commitment to using the various equipment for appropriate waste management at sea and on shore.

Henry Papa Oppong, the Manager of the ABS Fishing Harbour revealed that this initiative is under the theme coined by his outfit: “Own the Port and Create a Better Future.”

Mr. Henry Papa Oppong, stated that the rationale behind the event is to sensitize the stakeholders, that is, the fishermen, fishmongers, fish mummies and boat owners on the need to keep the Seas Clean. To this end, the ABS Fishing Harbour Manager cautioned the fishing community not to litter the environment and that those who go against the directive will be fined.

The Western Region Deputy Director, Technical at the Ghana Maritime Authority, Capt. expressed satisfaction at the collaborative effort.

“I’m very happy to say that the contribution has been very encouraging, the local men are ready to participate. A couple of years back, when you talk of cleanliness along the beach it’s like a story.

GPHA sends off Samuel Adjetey after 33 years of service

Outgoing Deputy Port Security Manager, Samuel Adjetey (left)

A send-off parade has been held in honour of outgoing Deputy Port Security Manager (DPSM) at the Port of Tema, Samuel Adjetey, who retires from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority after 33 years of service.

Stakeholders from the Tema Port business enclave, current and former Port Security Managers, and Authority workers gathered to pay tribute to the security veteran, described by all as a dedicated hardworking servant of the Port.

DPSM Samuel Adjetey is recognized by the Port Authority for his crucial role in ensuring compliance to the ISPS Code.

According to the Port Authority, his vast knowledge in maritime security and port operations always made it easy for successive Port Security Managers to effortlessly filter into the operations of GPHA.

The Director of Port, Sandra Opoku noted that DPSM Adjetey was a very a reliable subordinate who made her work easier.

Indeed every department or section has a go-to person; the person who knows how to handle the difficult situations and customers. The person who can be called upon at the most ungodly hour and will respond as though they have been expecting or they have been waiting for the call. That person who often has their wits and composure in check in the direst circumstances. Officer Sammy or Manager Sammy has been that person for most of us.”

The retired officer in turn urged the various security officers to give off their best in service to the Port Authority.

We should therefore see our service to the authority as an opportunity to serve and give off our best. This requires the need to be professional, dedicated to the core values of the organisation and be loyal to the leaders of the authority. We are all a team fighting for a common goal.”

Investment in transportation key to creating sustainable supply chains in Africa

0

Africa’s private sector has over the past few years often lamented that, the low zeal in engaging in intra-continental trade is a result of a lack of faith in the available transportation systems.

According to them, the requisite transportation systems to support economically sustainable trade is non-existent, or what is available is simply too costly and inefficient.

As such, experts are calling for increased investments into transportation in a bid to help create and enhance supply chains in Africa.

Gertrude Ohene Asienim speaking on Eye on Port

Given the stagnancy demonstrated by the continent’s private sector in the Free Trade era, investments into sustainable and efficient multi-modal transport systems are seen as a step in the right direction towards integration efforts.

The Secretary General for the International Chamber of Commerce Ghana, Emmanuel Doni-Kwame, a Senior Economist at the United Nations Development Program, Dr. Fatmata Lovetta Sesay and the Executive Director of Whitestone Shipbrokers Ghana and the West Africa School of Shipping, Gertrude Ohene Asienim are the latest to add their voices to this call on the Eye on Port TV program.

According to Gertrude Ohene Asienim, the issue of connectivity among African countries should be tackled as a matter of priority when it comes to efficient supply chain management.

She said governments should collaborate with private sector for the development of intermodal transport systems to support the Africa Continental Free Trade.

“We have moved from the age where production, distribution and carriage of goods were separate entities. Now, a customer expects door-to-door delivery of services. So, intermodal transport is necessary and should be promoted.”

She said developed countries who have succeeded in efficient supply chain management have practiced multi-modalism in transport.

Mrs. Ohene Asienim explained that by leveraging road, rail, air and water, the necessary synergies are harnessed for the efficient movement and delivery of goods.

The seasoned academic and chartered shipbroker emphasized that without developing these, there will be disruptions in supply chains.

“Someone was citing that you transport goods by sea to Nigeria in 3 days and you wait so many days at the port due to delays and congestions. It is so frustrating. Imagine having chartered such a vessel, you are going to accrue demurrage and other port costs. At the end, this is going to be added to the cost of the goods, and the ordinary consumer will pay for it. So it is important that these bottlenecks are removed and prioritized,” she pointed out.

The Executive Director of Whitestone Shipbrokers Ghana said Africans should expedite efforts towards its own coastal shipping systems so that goods traded along the continent’s coast are done in a faster, cheaper way.

She however cautioned that investment into transport infrastructure without the removal of non-tariff trade barriers will yield little results.

Emmanuel Doni-Kwame speaking on Eye On Port

The Secretary General of the ICC Ghana, Emmanuel Doni-Kwame, added that Africa can by itself create the necessary transport infrastructure to support integration efforts.

“Dangote is building an oil refinery. One main by-product of an oil refinery is bitumen so we have enough bitumen to fix our roads. There are very good local contractors with the necessary equipment to construct these roads. So the excuse of finding foreign contractors, I do not buy it,” he said.

“We got to know that there are about 97 checkpoints from Lagos to Abidjan. If you have a direct road which is tolled for the investor, with just four stops, in each country with the latest technology to check our goods, goods will be moved much quickly as it pertains in Europe,Mr. Doni-Kwame added.

He said through responsible public-private partnerships, Africa can secure its own transport systems to support integration efforts.

Dr. Fatmata Sesay speaking on Eye on Port

Dr. Fatmata Lovetta Sesay, on the other hand underscored that access to finance remains a bane for investors in the private sector, making it unattractive to take such initiatives.

She explained that investments into mechanisation and energy are critical for Africa to reach its productive capacity for trade.

The Senior Economist with the UNDP Ghana, also urged producers in Africa to collaborate when it comes to value addition and manufacturing in order to develop economies of scale.

She said research and the application of technology is key to drive the objectives of AfCFTA so far as the UNDP is concerned.

MPS keen on eliminating waste for sustainable supply chain

0

Management of the Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS), has stated the readiness of the Port of Tema to serve as logistics hub for intra-continental trade.

The Head of Legal and Compliance at MPS, Frank Ebo Brown was speaking during the plenary session of the ICC Sustainable Supply Chain Summit in Accra.

The 2-day conference in Accra created the opportunity for participants, largely private sector, to examine how to navigate supply chain disruptions within AfCFTA as well as how sustainable supply chain management, advanced technologies, process improvement and automation are being rolled out and can be leveraged in Africa.

He said, the world class Terminal 3 at the Port of Tema has been positioned with the necessary port and IT infrastructure necessary to receive the very large cargo carriers in the world today, as well as store and deliver cargo in a very seamless manner.

We are just saying Ghana is ready. We have a facility that can be of service to unlocking the whole continent. We have 16 metres of draft, a vast yard space for cargo. Why do we have to go Tangiers, Pelepas, Oman and other hubs and bring in cargo. We can have direct service. We have even started having the direct service now,” he asserted.

He said MPS has ensured to align and automate its processes within its three key clients, who are the shipping lines, the regulatory agencies and cargo owners.

He said due to its digitalization and innovative solutions, MPS has ensured that movement within the terminal facility are well coordinated and expedited to avoid congestions and delays.

“We have ensured that truckers, who are a major stakeholder of ours, come to the terminal with only their fingerprints and they will be able to identify and collect their containers,” Mr. Brown disclosed.

Similarly, he said, the terminal operator has successfully collaborated with Customs and the key regulatory agencies at the port for the needed connectivity towards trade facilitation.

He assured that the terminal operator will continue to ensure that its operations are not only sustainable but efficient in order to play its part for a sustainable supply chain within the maritime trade sector.

Maiden Africa sustainable supply chain summit held in Accra

0

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Ghana in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has organized the maiden edition of the Africa Sustainable Supply Chain Summit in Accra.

The annual event is designed to serve as a platform to exchange ideas and collaborate on the impact of market dynamics and new technologies for current and future supply chain and operations leaders.

The just ended 2-day conference in Accra created the opportunity for participants, largely private sector, to examine how to navigate supply chain disruptions within AfCFTA as well as how sustainable supply chain management, advanced technologies, process improvement and automation are being rolled out and can be leveraged in Africa.

The various speakers at the opening ceremony highlighted the need to accelerate Africa’s market integration on the back of sustainable and efficient supply chain systems.

The ICC Secretary General John Denton, speaking virtually noted that a robust foundation will help increase resilience and with clear and efficient processes in place, people will have certainties and businesses will have a framework to follow.

“Simply said, with lower trade costs, more trade will happen and this will long term create more growth and more revenues and more opportunities for better and more decent jobs and investments,’’ Mr. Denton said.

Dr. Angela Lusigi, Resident Representative, UNDP Ghana indicated that the delays and disruptions that affected global supply chains due to the Covid pandemic and more recently, the war in Ukraine and the global economic crisis should serve as a reminder that broken supply chains are one of the greatest threats to inclusive growth and sustainable human development in the continent. Therefore, “strengthening the resilience of Africa supply chains and enhancing the implementation of integrated supply chain solutions to advance economic, social and environmental goals is now more important than ever.”

The Secretary General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, Wamkele Mene revealed that Zimbabwe has annually 200 million dollars’ worth of excess grains. This excess grains go to waste because of the lack of capacity to store, process the grains and to export them to the rest of the continent. Sadly, according to Mr. Mene, Africa relies on Eastern Europe for 70% of grain requirements.

So the challenge for us is to establish supply chain networks, technologies, and capabilities that will enable notjust Zimbabwe in this case but also Malawi, Ethiopia and any other country that has the capacity to export and provide food security for the African continent to do so.”

The Key Note speaker and Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry Michael Okyere Baafi, urged experts to come up with fruitful pragmatic interventions to solve the challenges of AfCFTA due to the economic breakthrough it promises.

He said domestically, it should be made easy and affordable for traders to connect with logistic networks on the continent especially with the introduction of the Pan African Payment System.

The Ghanaian Chronicle
