Osofo Kyiri Abosom Promises Sharia Law

0
Osofo Kyiri Abosom

The founder of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, better known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has threatened to cause physical harm to his appointees who attempt to lootfrom state coffers, if voted to power. He has also pledged to retrieve and return to the nation all state lands and other properties stolen by political actors.

“I will cause physical harm to those who steal from the state, even if you have to lose your arm”,Osofo Kyiri Abosom threatened and added that: “Those who have taken state lands and other properties belonging to the state would be taken back.”

He issued the threat during an interaction with the media in Kumasi at the newly refurbished Prempeh Assembly Hall yesterday.

The event was attended by supporters of GUM, who came from Kintampo,Wenchi, Oti, Kwame Danso and Kumasi among other places.

Complementing the attendance were organisations such as Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), and GARAGES among others.

OsofoKyiriAbosom further described the 24-hour economy mantra of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as concert.

KyiriAbosom argues that the 24-hour economy campaign of the NDC is not formidable, but rather a rhetoric, which cannot put food on the table.

“24-hour is a mere statement and it cannot be accomplished until companies are available”, he said.

The Prelate cum Politician, who is an Nkrumah-ist, expressed worry about the competence of the NDC and NPP.

He was particular about their inability to revive factories established by the first president of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, citing the Akomadan Tomato factory, Kumasi Jute factory, Bolgatanga Meat factory and Aboso Glass factory among others, as prime example.

According to him, GUM believes state-owned enterprise have to be revamped, else Ghanaians will suffer.

He has, therefore, called on Ghanaians to do away with the NDC and NPP and vote for GUM. “Our leaders speak English, but they cannot put anything on the table. They are not helping us.

We need to change our mindsets…. Ghanaians have to refrain from the NPP and NDC….they are causing more harm than good,” he said.

In an address which was interlaced with Twi and English language, the flagbearer for GUM was of the view that the above mentioned two political parties come to power only to saddle Ghanaians with debt, which put Ghanaians in uneasy economic mess.

Launching a scathing attack on the candidature of Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2024 General Elections, KyiriAbosom described the Veep as a ‘liar’ who has not been able to do what he promised Ghanaians.

Kyiri Abosom expressed worry about mounting taxes on Ghanaians by the government of the day, assuring that when GUM is voted to power, they would operate a duty-free port in Ghana, where government would not tax imported items.

He said “The taxes are too much. We will do away with all these taxes. We cannot continue in this situation… How can you tax us on electricity?”

Kyiri Abosom, who spoke on a wide range of issues, such as education, agriculture, employment and governance among others, where he critiqued and proffered solutions, described the Parliament of Ghana as unimportant, which is a liability to the good people of Ghana.

According to the flagbearer of GUM, when they come to power, each region would have one parliamentarian, a policy he believes would save state money.

He added that organisations such as teachers and farmers among others shall have a representative in Parliament.

The GUM leader further noted that his party would develop Ghana with indigenous resources, giving credence to barter trade where Ghana would use her resources to transact trade with other nations.

Touching on education, he accused government of poorly running the Ghanaian education system.

“If you take a look at the way and manner that we are educating our kids, nothing better is coming out from there.

“Our interest is to teach the children how to produce items. We want to teach them how to rear animals and other practices,” he claimed.

On social benefits for the aged, GUM, which appears to be a socialist inclined political party, told the media that when given power, they will introduce Old Age Benefits, a policy which would cater for anyone who attains the age of 60 years, whether the person is a government worker or not, he or she would be taken care of by the state.

“Anyone who attains the age of 60 years under the tenure of GUM would be given a social protection,” he assured.

Annul Yendi election -Habibata

0

One of the two aspiring parliamentary candidates of the Yendi constituency, Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama, has petitioned the national office of the New Patriotic Party to declare last Saturday’s polls in the area invalid.

According to her, the process, which commenced freely and fairly ended with substantial irregularities, infractions, violations and, therefore, “lost its validity.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, addressed her petition to the General Sectary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama

She made ten requests, some of which are; that the party should make an order prohibiting the incumbent MP, Farouk Mahama, from holding himself out as the elected parliamentary candidate.

She also wants all complices sanctioned, and an order for fresh elections to be held in the Yendi constituency.

Below is the full petition details what transpired

Dear Sir,

PETITION OVER THE CONDUCT OF THE 2024 NPP PARLIAMENTARY PRIMARIES IN THE YENDI CONSTITUENCY

Respectfully, I write to bring the following critical issues concerning the chaotic conduct of the failed New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held on Saturday, the 27th of January 2024 at the Yendi Senior High School for your urgent attention and redress.

  1. By the Parliamentary Primaries Protocols for Incumbent Members of Parliament of the NPP issued by the Party on the 22nd of January 2024 with reference number NPP/HQ/PR/2024/01/22/GS/PP, the Party mandated the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to supervise the Parliamentary Primaries and granted the Commission with the full responsibility for ensuring transparent, free and fair elections.
  2. That by the same protocols, the Party further prohibited party officials, government appointees, and other persons from acting in contravention of the Electoral Commission and the Guidelines referred supra.
  3. The Yendi Constituency Parliamentary Primaries had two contestants – Hon. Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), and Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama (Petitioner herein).
  4. There appears to be a grand ploy by some officers of the party to conspire with election officers and the incumbent MP to rig the elections in favour of the incumbent MP against the established democratic tradition of our great party, and the wishes of the delegates and the members of the party in Yendi.
  5. The key actors in the ploy included Alhaji Masawudu Osman (3rd National Vice Chairman), Alhaji Salifu Rashid C.O.P., the Northern Regional Organiser, Alhaji YussifToyibu, the Regional Treasurer, Mr. Fusheini Bawah Kpana, the regional Research and Elections Officer, Mr. Mohammed Adam Bantima Samba, the Northern Regional Chairman, some members of the Party Elections Committee, some officers of the Electoral Commission and the Security Service.
  6. On the Election Day, Saturday, 27th January 2024, voting started freely, fairly, and transparently. Voting ended at around 12:30 pm and they started sorting ballots at 2PM.
  7. A cursory look at the sorted and compiled ballot papers for each aspirant showed that I obtained the highest number of votes and was anticipating a declaration to that effect after due process had been complied with.
  8. It must be noted that the Regional and National Officers who had a grand agenda to rig the elections massed up at the collation to block our views and cover up their ploy.
  9. In pursuit of the grand agenda to rig the elections, an officer of the EC (Regional Storekeeper) tainted his fingers with indelible ink and was touching the sorted ballots (yet to be counted) in favour of me to taint them with a malicious intention of having them compromised and reclassified as rejected ballots.
  10. Further, whilst the counting of the ballots of Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama was ongoing, the same EC Officer, picked the sorted, yet-to-be-counted ballots papers in favour of me and pocketed them. However, luck alluded him and he was caught red-handed.
  11. A member of my team went to complain to the Police and get the pocketed ballots removed from the pocket of the said EC Officer. The ink pad used to taint my valid votes was also retrieved. Despite the obstruction by some party officers at the scene, the pocketed ballot papers were also retrieved.
  12. By this time, ballots counted in favour of the incumbent MP, Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama were around 213 with approximately less than 100 ballots yet to be counted in his favour.
  13. Sensing the danger that the incumbent MP was losing the elections, the supporters of the MP fetched my uncounted ballots, scattered them, and destroyed a significant number of them. This act infuriated my supporters who also picked the counted and uncounted ballots of the MP and scattered same with some destroyed.
  14. The ballot papers were all scattered; a significant number were destroyed, and some were taken away from the scene. The EC did not have the ballot papers to re-sort or count. Appendices A, B, C, D, E, F and G are videos and pictorial evidence of destruction of uncounted ballots.
  15. It was practically impossible for valid votes or ballot papers to be identified or re-sorted and counted as some party members made away with them and some were destroyed. The EC lost control of the election process and materials were damaged.
  16. The Electoral Commission team from Yendi to conduct the elections were; The Municipal EC Director (Madam Millicent), Iddrisu Yussif (Returning Officer), Issah Mohammed Saani (Name Reference List Officer), Alhassan Osman (Ballot Issuer) and other two supporting staff.
  17. The Electoral commission also brought the EC Directors from Saboba and Kpandai, a deputy director from Sagnarigu district, Regional Technician and Regional Stores who worked hand-in-hand with the Yendi EC team. Meanwhile all elections in Yendi Constituency including the recent NPP Presidential Primaries were conducted by only the team without any problems.
  18. The EC officer (Regional Stores) who maliciously destroyed and pocketed some valid votes sorted in my favour was arrested amid the chaos and sent to the Yendi Police Station.
  19. The Divisional Police Commander for Yendi Division was asked to man the main gate which is far from the elections centre whiles the Regional Police Commander and his team took over the elections centre. Meanwhile all previous elections including the recent NPP Presidential Primaries were all manned by the Divisional Police Commander and his team and it was very successful.
  20. I went to the Yendi Police Station to make an official complaint about the situation in anticipation that the relevant bodies would take up the matter and deal with the culprits whose actions resulted in the chaos.
  21. Later in the night, the information I received confirmed that the 3rd National Vice Chairman, the Northern Regional Chairman, the Northern Regional Organizer, the incumbent MP, the Regional and Divisional Police Commanders, and the EC Officers held a meeting at the Yendi Police Station purporting to resolve the matter.
  22. Neither I nor my agents were invited to the meeting. Some of my supporters who got a hint of the information followed up at the Police Station and were denied access to the meeting by the Police Officers.
  23. The failure of the Police, the EC Officers, National and Regional Party Officers to invite me or allow my agents access to the meeting purporting to resolve the issue was in clear violation of the rules of natural justice. Consequently, any decision arising thereof which affects my interest ought to be declared invalid and of no effect.
  24. On the night of 27th of January, 2024, we saw a video taken at the Yendi Police Station in which the 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masawudu Osman in the company of the Northern Regional Chairman and his team, and some Constituency Executives, purportedly declared Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama as the winner without the appropriate authority, or recourse to any counting of ballots or any due process of law, and in clear violation of the guidelines issued by the party on the 22nd of January 2024.
  25. In view of the foregoing, I respectfully request the National Executive Committee to: a) Hold that NPP Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held in Yendi on the 27th of January 2024 were tainted with substantial irregularities, violations, infractions and therefore lost its validity.

(b) Declare that the 2024 NPP Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held in Yendi on the 27th of January 2024 as null, void and of no effect whatsoever.

(c) Declare that under the Parliamentary Primaries Protocols for Incumbent Members of Parliament of the NPP issued on the 22nd of January 2024 with reference number NPP/HQ/PR/2024/01/22/GS/PP, the only body mandated to conduct and declare results of the 2024 Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency is the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

(d) Declare that neither the 3rd Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, nor any party executive, party officer, nor any government appointee has the mandate to conduct or declare results or winner of the NPP Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held on the 27th of January 2024.

(e) Declare that the purported declaration of Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama by Alhaji Masawudu Osman (3rd National Vice Chairman) as the winner of the 2024 NPP Parliamentary Primaries for Yendi Constituency on the 27th of January 2024 is null, void and of no effect whatsoever and he as a National Officer should be sanctioned for disregarding party protocols.

(f) The Regional Party Officers who were also involved in the misconducts should be sanctioned.

(g) All EC officers who were complicit in the process should be sanctioned by the EC.

  1. h) Make an order prohibiting the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama from holding himself as the Parliamentary Candidate (PC) Elect of the Yendi Constituency for the 2024 Elections.

( i) Order for fresh elections to be conducted and supervised by competent, independent, and sincere Electoral Commission Officers, Party Officers, and Security Officers.

( j) Make any other order(s) as the party may deem fit under the circumstance. I respectfully submit above trusting that the leadership of the party will act decisively and in the greater interest of our enviable party for justice and true democratic credentials of our party to prevail over all other interests. God bless our homeland Ghana and our great New Patriotic Party.

Thank you.  HajiaAbibata Shanni Mahama NPP Parliamentary Aspirant, 2024 Yendi Constituency

Ghana’s economy has not turned any corner -JM

0
John Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama says there is no truth to the claims being made by the government that the economy is improving.

He said this at the Council of Indigenous Business Association’s (CIBA) forum with the NDC Presidential Candidate in Accra, yesterday.

This comment, he said, was in reference to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Staff Report on Ghana.“Just two days ago the IMF said despite debt restructuring, Ghana’s debt is still unsustainable so all talks about turning the corner, we haven’t turned any corner yet,” he stated emphatically

Addressing the gathering under the theme: ‘Formalising informal sector business through CIBA and Cooperative for socio-economic growth and development – The role of National Leadership’ the former president said there are several mistakes the government has done and as a result the country is going through crises.

He reaffirmed that ensuring the stability of the economy will be the primary priority of his administration when it assumes power next year.

Mr Mahama emphasised on the need to pay attention to small and young enterprises, especially in the indigenous businesses and individuals.

“GDP growth includes the Gross National Product, which is the contribution of indigenous businesses and individuals to the economy’s growth”, he added.

To him, the foreign control of the country’s economic growth supersedes that of the indigenous businesses and individuals and as such the government should focus on the contribution of Ghanaian indigenous business to the total economic growth.

Mr. Mahama further told the gathering that his government had plans for the indigenous businesses in their 24-hour economy.

“We must have the safety and secured environment for businesses that work 24 hours because if we have armed robbery around at night nobody feels safe”, he explained.

Moreover, he emphasised the importance to have an efficient and reliable transport system to make sure that it is safer and easier for people to go to work especially at night.

Touching on fuel, he said his government will also address the high cost of fuels in the country because “a lot of businesses depend on transport of raw materials and finished goods and as such if fuel prices are high, their production cost will also go high”.

The Executive Secretary of CIBA, John K. Momo, who also gave the keynote address, said the CIBA is in line with Ghana’s digitization drive, with the intrinsic goal to accelerate economic growth and facilitate job creation.

12 sentenced over murder of Major Mahama

0
Law Court Complex, Accra

Twelve (12) persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering an officer of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Major Maxwell Mahama.

They are William Baah, Bernard Asamoah Kofi Nyame, Charles Kwaning, Kwame Tuffuor, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim William Baah, Bernard Asamoah and Kofi Nyame.

The rest are Charles Kwaning, Kwame Tuffuor, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim, John Bosie, Akwesi Asante, Emmanuel Baidoo and Kwadzo Anima.

However, verdict was also passed to acquit and discharge two of the 14 residents of Dankyira Obuasi, who were accused of the murder of Major Mahama, who was on guard duty at Dankyira Obuasi, in the Central region.

Bismark Donkor and Bismarck Abanga were acquitted by the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu, after being found innocent by the jury yesterday.

Hitherto, all of the convicts and discharged pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime, abetment of a crime and murder.

Nevertheless, on July 4, 2022 the court ruled that prosecution made prima facie case and called on all of the convicts and discharged persons to open their defence.

The subject matter of the case was that Major Mahama is dead, but died through harm, the harm was unlawful, the death was intentional and that the convicts were the cause of the death.

As it was established by autopsy that Major Mahama died from multiple head injuries from blunt object and gun wounds.

The court stated that circumstances leading to his death were captured in video, including the role each of the convicts played in lynching the soldier, who was by then a Captain.

Recounting the incident in the year 2017, the court noted that Bernard Asamoah was seen hitting the deceased with a stick, as well as a stone.

Kofi Nyame was seen dropping a cement block on the head of the deceased and Charles Kwaning, as well as Kwame Tuffuor admitted doing same.

Joseph Appiah Kubi admitted the crime by stating that he pelted ‘small’ blocks he picked at the deceased. Michael Anim on his part said he only threw a blow at the deceased. Another accused person admitted throwing a cement block at the deceased, but said it did not hit target because the deceased blocked it with his hand.

Akwesi Asante was captured in the video holding a gun at the crime scene and fired same at the deceased.

Kwadzo Anima was at the scene and took part in the crime by removing the clothe of the deceased.

Families of the deceased were content with the verdict and hoped that no other person suffers the fate of their son.

Editorial: Gov’t should insist on security of tenure clause in next Black Stars manager’s contract

0
Editorial

In our Friday, January 26, 2024 edition, we expressed concern over a series of allegations that have rocked the senior national soccer team, the Black Stars, after their painful exit from the AFCON 2023 currently underway in Ivory Coast.

The Chronicle, for instance, picked information that because of the bad relationship between some of the FA officials and agents of some of the players, the latter is not being invited into the team and in cases where they are even invited, their services are not properly utilised.

In view of this, we suggested a total overhaul of the team, which is owned by the state to ensure that they perform well in their next international assignments. Indeed, a lot have happened since we made these suggestions. In fact we are being told that the manager of the national team does not allegedly have full control over who to invite and which player to use.

We are also being told that some of the FA members have teams across all football divisions in the country. Coaches selected to handle these national teams allegedly call the bulk of the players from these teams, owned by the FA officials. To make matters worse, management members of the Black Stars are being paid huge sums of money for the role they are playing.

If we all agree that the national teams, and most especially the Black Stars, is owned and funded by the state, then the government of the day should play a crucial role in the selection and appointment of coaches to handle the national teams, but unfortunately, this is not happening.

As we speak, the GFA after the abysmal performance of the team in Ivory Coast has set up a committee to search for a new coach. This is like putting the cart before the horse, because how does the FA go hunting for a new coach when they have not done any technical assessment and come up with a comprehensive report on why we failed abysmally at the tournament.

If for anything at all, since we all know that the team belongs to the state, one would have expected the government to take the initiative to search and appoint its own coach, but for fear of being accused of interfering in football administration by FIFA, we are allowing the FA to do the selection again.

Nevertheless, to avoid the dissipation of state resources without corresponding results, as we are experiencing now, The Chronicle expects the government to sit down with the new Black Stars coach, when selected, and charge him to do an independent work.

As a matter of fact, a clause should be inserted in his contract to assure the coach that the government of Ghana will not support his dismissal if he decides to invite his own players without any interference from the football people. We believe that if the coach is given this assurance, he would defy any FA member that may try to influence his selection of players.

We insist that the Black Stars is owned by the state and must, therefore, have crucial role to play as to who manages the team. Whilst we admit that football is a big time business, it does not mean that we should allow private individuals to turn the national soccer teams into their private business venture at the expense of the state.

This also brings us to the issue of fat bonuses that are allegedly paid to management members of the Black Stars. According to various media reports, each member of the management team allegedly pocketed a whopping $100,000 after the 2022 World Cup. We hope this is not true, but if the opposite is the case, then The Chronicle will be surprised that the government also sanctioned such payments.

Medical doctors who help save lives in Ghana and university lecturers who impact knowledge to the next generation do not earn even a quarter of the package as their retirement benefits. The big question is: can the government look at the faces of the agitating workers and tell them there is no money, when it has signed off such a huge sums of money to individuals for playing roles that

do not even bring us success?

Certainly, there is no justification for such huge payments even if the money is coming from FIFA. If the national team had not qualified for the World Cup, FIFA wouldn’t have paid any appearance fee to the Ghana FA. Again, if this is the case, why should we allow people to use the name of Black Stars to make money and yet Ghanaians cannot question them because the money is from FIFA?

The last time we checked, the only product GFA has is the local league, which is almost dead, as Ghanaian teams have failed to perform well in Africa in recent years. All the cash cows – Starlets, Satellite, Black Meteors and Black Stars – are owned by the state of Ghana. This is the reason why we should be concerned about how football money is being dissipated.

We pause here and shall be back.

Ho municipal assembly to demolish illegal structures

0
The MCE showing journalists one of the buildings that has been built in the middle of a road

The Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Divine R.K Bosson, has cautioned developers against building in areas earmarked for roads, saying the Assembly would not compromise on the demolition of such structures to ensure standard planning of the city.

Mr Bosson said since 2022, the Assembly had informed those who started building at the foundation level in areas marked for roads to stop, but they had refused and stressed that the Assembly would definitely remove all structures on the roads.

The Ho MCE who made this known when he took the media round roads under construction in the Ho township  and challenges that the Assembly faced in carrying out construction activities, explained that the new roads being constructed would help open up the municipality to reduce traffic as well as ensure proper planning of the city.

Construction work progresses on Housing Junction road

According to Mr Bosson, many developers had failed to obtain building permits from the Assembly, and when they are ordered them to stop work because they were either building on roads or building without permit, they refused. The MCE warned that the Assembly would not countenance such acts of lawlessness.

He said the city of Ho was planned over 70 years ago, and that the development plan would still be maintained to ensure that the city becomes one of the best in the country.

According to him, drainage systems would be improved to prevent flooding in parts of the municipality, as experienced 2023, and asked residents to cooperate with the Assembly and to support it to effectively implement its development agenda.

He said as part of the development plan of the Assembly, trees would be planted along roads in the municipality to beautify the city and also maintain its status as the oxygen city of the country.

The Works Engineer of the Assembly, Mr John Ntibre said major roads under construction included the 1.2 kilometres Dave-junction –Barracks road, OLA –top road, charcoal market road and Zion School junction roads, which would be completed within six months.

Modern private hospital constructed in Ho

0

A new medical health facility, Fountain Medical Services (FMS) has been inaugurated in Ho to bridge the gap between critical health provision to the people of the Volta and the Oti Regions.

The FMS vision and mission is for the two regions in particular and Ghanaians in general is to provide holistic healthcare accessibility and special healthcare services that would prevent people in the two regions from travelling long distances to Accra before they could benefit from critical healthcare services.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FMS, Dr Anthony Kobla Kpetsey, who made this known at the inaugural ceremony of the facility, said it would deploy cutting edge technology in healthcare, by providing excellent healthcare in the regions and to Ghanaians in general.

Dr Kpetsey stressed that the facility would ensure that clients derive quality healthcare through the use of medicine, exercise and regular health education that would keep the people healthy at all times. He added that FMS management had short and medium term goals of providing quality but affordable healthcare in the areas of eye care, wound care with the state-of the art hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

He said general consultation, dialysis services and laboratory services were part of the short term and that the medium goal was to add obstetrics, gynaecology, maternity and paternity wards and roll out dialysis services across the country.

According to Dr Kpetsey  the management of the facility also aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle through education to keep people out of the hospital and ensured that those who needed special care had been taken care of, including developing an end stage kidney failure, saying having a wound that is not healing should not necessarily result in amputation.

Dr Kpatsey also said visual impairment should no longer deny people access to quality of life and promised that FMS had modern equipment to deal with emerging health challenges of society.

A Supreme Court Judge, His Lordship Justice Ernest Gaewu, called on workers at the new health facility to be more dedicated to their work to ensure accelerated growth of the facility. He observed that many private sector institutions had collapsed due to the attitudes, actions and inactions of workers.

His Lordship Justice Gaewu said there are hundreds of unemployed youths looking for jobs in the country, but unfortunately when they were employed, these workers normally adopt negative attitudes towards work by either absenting themselves, reporting late to work or at times stealing equipment.

He, therefore, called on the youth to change their attitudes towards work whenever they are employed because businesses would only engage serious workers who would work hard to generate more profit that would sustain the company to develop.

The Chief of Ho –Bankoe, Togbe Dzomatsi, commended Dr Kpetsey for his vision that led to the establishment of the facility, which he was confident would provide quality healthcare in the Ho municipality and stressed the need for affordable services to clients.

Medical, dental consultants issue fresh six-week strike notice

Doctors during a protest

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria has extended the ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government to address all pending issues by six more weeks.

MDCAN made this known in a communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Sunday.

The communique which was read during a press conference was signed by its President, Prof Mohammad  Mohammad and Secretary-General, Dr. Daiyabu Ibrahim.

Recall that there was an ultimatum handed to the Federal Government by the association in 2023 which was to expire on January 31, 2024, and the decision to go on strike was to be taken at the Uyo NEC meeting.

However, the association decided to extend the ultimatum by six more weeks to allow for consultation with the government.

The association said it would no longer guarantee industrial harmony if its demands were not met after the expiration of the six weeks grace.

The NEC expressed dismay that despite its numerous engagements with relevant government agencies on the demands of the association, much is yet to be achieved.

It also observed that the issue of shortfall in salaries/income loss by Honorary consultants (Clinical lecturers) occasioned by the failure of the government to implement universal applicability of CONMESS to all medical and dental officers in public service and increase (harmonisation) in retirement age of hospital consultants, among others are yet to be addressed fully.

The communique read in part, “NEC resolved to extend the ultimatum earlier given to the government by six weeks (up to 10/03/2024), to address all pending issues between government and the association. MDCAN cannot guarantee industrial harmony after the expiration of the above ultimatum if its demands are not met.”

NEC also observed that budgetary allocation to the sector has remained at less than 5% of the budget of the country adding that Per Capital spending on health has also shown a marked decline

She pledged the support of her outfit in the care and treatment of childhood cancers in the future.

The Ghanaian Chronicle
