New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Bekwai constituency in the Ashanti Region have chosen a new path to progress and development in their constituency by electing for a young Ghanaian lawyer, Ralph Poku-Adusei to contest and represent them in the next parliament.

The election, held on Saturday, 27 January, 2024 saw Ralph Poku-Adusei, who was second on the ballot paper, which had four candidates, polled six hundred and sixty-two (662) votes of a total of nine hundred and thirty-eight (938), representing 70% of the valid votes cast.

His closest contender, Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah (Rtd), polled two hundred and forty-five (245) votes, representing 26% of the valid votes cast.

The other aspirants, Kingsley Opoku Agyeman, secured only one (1) vote, representing 0.001% and Henry Opoku Adusei, secured thirty (30) votes, amounting to 3% of the valid votes cast.

Joe Wise candidate rejected

The delegates are said to have chosen a new path because they rejected the candidate who was openly supported by the outgoing Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bekwai constituency and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu (Joe Wise).

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament endorsed the candidature of COP George Alex Mensah (Rtd) and was seen campaigning for him in various towns and villages in the Bekwai Municipality.

However, the candidate of the sitting MP managed to secure only 26% of the valid votes cast, which was certainly not enough to win the Bekwai constituency candidature.

Endorsements

The vetting committee, chaired by Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), before whom Ralph Poku-Adusei appeared, praised him for his unwavering support and commitment to the people of Bekwai and to all NPP faithful in the constituency.

Speaking on behalf of his two other colleagues on the committee, after vetting Ralph Poku-Adusei, Henry Nana Boakye said Mr Poku-Adusei demonstrated pure love and dedication to the NPP and to the people of the Bekwai municipality.

“Everything you have said in response to our probing questions at this vetting has established that you have a genuine desire to ensure that the NPP as a Party stays in office to develop the country and that the Bekwai constituency gets it first share of this development.

“You have earned my personal admiration and that of the committee, and we wish you a successful primary contest on 27 January, 2024. We are fully persuaded that the delegates of Bekwai will reward your hard work, support and commitment to them by electing you as their parliamentary candidate for the 7 December, 2024 elections, “Nana Boakye said to the admiration of Lawyer Ralph’s supporters, who accompanied him to the vetting.

The NPP Ashanti regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), at the vetting also commended Ralph Poku-Adusei for his selfless support and contribution to the growth and development of the NPP, particularly in Bekwai. He also endorsed Ralph Poku-Adusei’s candidature.

The Secretary to the committee, Iddi Muhaya-Deen, after Ralph’s vetting called for a standing ovation in his honour, and the same was observed by all present, amidst a loud round of applause.

13 out of the 17 executive committee members (10 elected, 3 appointed) and 29 out of the 34 electoral area coordinators also endorsed the candidature of Ralph Poku-Adusei, ahead of the primaries.

Julius Malema, How Dare You?

0
Opinion

South Africa’s politician and leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters,Julius Malema, stormed Ghana and said things he should not have said.

Heinvited Ghanaians to visit South Africa, for studies, work and tourism, andlied that South Africa is not a xenophobic country. Hesaid, “South Africans are not xenophobic, South Africans are peace-loving people.”

In June 2019, during the height of xenophobic attacks on Black African migrants by Black South Africans, Julius Malema made this statement: “Stop Xenophobia! There is no foreigner that took your jobs. If you fail in business, do not blame other people,”

But today, he is saying South Africans are not xenophobic. Does he think we are simpletons in Ghana?

In May 2008, during one of the worse xenophobic violence in South Africa, sixty-two Black African migrants were killed, with hundreds injured and at least 100,000 displaced.

In the September 28, 2023 edition of Human Rights Watch, South African, Nomathamsanqa Masiko-Mpaka, reported, that xenophobia was rearing its ugly head in South Africa and foreigners were scapegoated for the country’s problems.

An anti-immigrantvigilante group, called Operation Dudula Movement (ODM), founded in Soweto in 2021, growing fast, with branches all across South Africa, was calling for the mass deportation of Black African migrants and blocking immigrants from accessing healthcare; raiding businesses belonging to foreign nationals and forcing their shops to close.

Members use derogatory words on migrants and sing struggle songs signifying readiness to go to war against the foreigners, with one of them, heard saying, “To tell you the truth, I hate foreigners. How I wish they could just pack and go and leave our country.” Dudula is the isiZulu word for “to push out,” denoting pushing foreigners out of South Africa and back to their countries of origin.

Is this the country, Julius Malema is inviting Ghanaians to?

Xenophobia against Black African migrants by South African Blacks began during the apartheid era. Butgotworsened and more deadly, after the Blacks took over power.

And Julius Malema is saying nothing like this ever took place? Was henot the one who condemned his own President Ramaphosa, whose speech incited the Black South African youth to embark on the 2019 xenophobic attacks on Black African migrants?

Pew research has it that 62% of Black South Africans believe that Black African migrants have taken over their jobs and must be made to leave their country. Julius Malema cannot come here and show us disrespect.

Julius Malema slammed Ghana’s leadership for supporting Israel, declaring that anyone supporting Israel is an enemy to South Africans. And so what? Black South Africans have transformed South Africa from an apartheid to a xenophobic state, which attacks and kills other Black Africans. So, If Israel is accused of genocide, then what about South Africa?

The Hamas Palestinians provoked Israel into this war, by committing genocide against innocent Israelis on October 7, 2023. Ghana and a few nations, condemned the act. South Africa did not see anything wrong with that because given the opportunity, it would have done worse than Hamas. Now that the tables have turned, they dragged Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

I have a problem, here. How can South Africa which is xenophobic accuse another country of genocide?

During the apartheid era, South Africa and Israel who then occupied Egypt land, were in strong relationships. Today while South Africa regards Israel as enemies and is accusing it of genocide and headed to the ICJ, its hands are dripping with innocent blood of Black African migrants. Yes, “Whenever a thief is pursued, other thieves join in the pursuit.”

Julius Malema is saying, “Shame on the Leadership of Ghana for supporting Israel.” And I will say, “Shame on Julius Malema and shame on South Africa.”Julius Malema, without shame, camehere and lied to us that South Africa is not xenophobic, when this barbaric act is rising to dizzy heights, there. And the authorities are very helpless and cannot do anything about it. Shame On Julius Malema!

With most South African youths opting for xenophobia, what canSouth Africa political parties, including EFF, tell the youth in this Election Year?

But why did South Africa go to the ICJ? Reports reaching me from Israel, strongly alleged that the current South Africa’s president was given a gargantuan envelope to take Israel to court and use the money to support his campaign. Then Julius Malema comes to Ghana to condemn our leadership for supporting Israel. Did he also receive something?

For himto suggest that the global community should honour the desires of the Palestinians, when Black South Africans are not honouring the desires of Black African migrants, shows he is not sincere.

If those who support Israel are enemies of South Africa, then why is Malema not demanding that South Africa breaks links with those countries? South Africa was an enemy of Free Africa, in the apartheid days and still is today, in its state of xenophobia.

Black South Africans could not deal with the Whites who molested and tortured them during the apartheid regime, but after gaining freedom, largely due to the contributions of other Black African nations, they have rather turned against Black African migrants, hunting them down and killing them. Julius Malema must address this and stop disturbing our peace with his lies and selfish political desires.

Editorial: We congratulate NPP for peaceful primaries

0
Editorial

Since returning to democratic governance over two decades ago, competitive elections have been salient features of Ghana’s multi-party politics. Regular elections between competing political parties and candidates have been the dominant method of choosing representatives to the legislature and composing the government.

It is in the light of the above that President Akufo-Addo has congratulated the winners of the New Patriotic Party’s just-ended parliamentary primaries in areas where the party has sitting Members of parliament. In a notice yesterday, January 28, 2024 the President said “We have elected a good blend of experienced and youthful parliamentary candidates whom I warmly congratulate.”

He expressed confidence that elected candidates would “help secure a majority for the NPP in the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic and help return an NPP presidential candidate into office on 7th January 2025.”

The president extended his warm congratulations to the rank and file of the party, and applauded all stakeholders – the national, regional, constituency, electoral area and polling station executives of the party, the Electoral Commission, the security services and the media for a job well done.

The Chronicle also congratulated the NPP for a peaceful primary. The NPP’s decision to hold primaries for Members of Parliament demonstrates the party’s commitment to internal democracy. By allowing party members to participate in the selection of their candidates, the NPP has set a positive precedent for political engagement and inclusivity.

Over the years, the NPP has adopted internal party reforms to ensure democratic practices and operations. The reforms include widening the electoral base of the party in the selection of candidates, simultaneous conduction of polls across constituencies, and restriction of candidates eligible for elections.

This has helped to reduce the rancour associated with parliamentary primaries and has gone a long way in consolidating democracy with a peaceful conduct of the primaries

As the December 7, 2024 national elections approach, it is crucial to emphasise the need for an open and transparent electoral process that upholds the spirit of democracy. Ghana has a long-standing tradition of peaceful transitions of power and it is crucial to maintain this reputation. To achieve this, several key factors must be considered.

The Electoral Commission must ensure that all steps, from voter registration to the announcement of results are conducted openly and with integrity. Political parties should also play their part by promoting transparency within their ranks and holding their members accountable for any misconduct.

Also, access to accurate and unbiased information is vital for voters to make informed decisions. Media organizations, civil society, and political parties should work together to provide citizens with comprehensive and balanced coverage of political campaigns, manifestos, and debates.

We believe that ensuring a secure and peaceful environment during elections is crucial for citizens to exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation. The government, security agencies and all stakeholders must collaborate to prevent any form of violence, electoral fraud, or voter suppression. It is essential to create an atmosphere that encourages participation and respects the will of the people.

Upholding the principles of democracy, transparency, accountability, equal access to information, and a peaceful environment are crucial for a successful and credible election. Let us embrace these values and work together to ensure a bright and prosperous future for Ghana.

Fubara makes fresh appointments amid fight with lawmakers

0
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has made four new appointments amid the State House Assembly voting to override him to pass four new bills into law.

The governor on Friday appointed Goodlife Ben as the Acting Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Tonte Davies as the Acting Administrator of New Cities Development Authority, NCDA, and Ine Briggs as the Acting Director General, Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP.

In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, the governor said the appointments take immediate effect.

On Friday, the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly voted to override Governor Siminalayi Fubara and pass four new bills into law.

The bills include the Rivers Local Government Amendment Law, the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Amendment Law, the Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State-Owned Property Prohibition repeal law, and the Rivers State Funds Management and Financial Autonomy Law.

The House decided on Friday during plenary after Amaewhule read four letters addressed to him by the governor, wherein he declined his assent to the four new bills which had been sent to him for assent.

According to the House, its decision relies on Section 100 subsection 5 of the constitution, which said the assent of the governor is not required for the passage of the bills into law.

The house stated that where the governor withholds assent and the bill is again passed by two-thirds majority of the House, the bill shall become a law and the assent of the governor shall not be required.

Amaewhule further accused the governor of having no plans of conducting local government elections in the state.

This is coming 24 hours after the Supreme Court upheld the election of Governor Fubara.

The assembly, led by Amaewhule comprises 27 members who are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Four members of the State Assembly, formerly led by Edison Ehie, who has now resigned as Speaker and member representing Ahoada East Constituency 2, are loyal to the governor.

President Bola Tinubu had waded into the political crisis in the state, which is predicated on the rift between Fubara and Wike.

The intervention of the President had led the concerned parties in the crisis to sign an eight-point resolution (peace accord) to end the crisis.

FG Not Recruiting ‘Area Boys’ To Collect Taxes – Oyedele

0
Chairman of Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has said the Federal Government is not recruiting ‘area boys’ to collect taxes.

On January 17, Oyedele exclusively told Channels Television that the government could train area boys for tax collection and pay decent salaries to forsake their old ways.

Following the public outcry that trailed the statement, Oyedele took to his X handle on Saturday, to say his comment was taken out of context.

He argued that a person cannot be recruited to do the job they are already doing, whether they are legally engaged or otherwise.

You cannot recruit a person to do the job they are already doing, whether they are legally engaged or otherwise.

We have over 40 taxes and levies which States and Local Governments are authorised by law to…

“We have over 40 taxes and levies which States and Local Governments are authorised by law to collect across Nigeria including road taxes on trucks, buses and bicycles, wheelbarrow, kiosks and shops levies,” he said.

“In many cases, area boys are engaged to collect these taxes which they often do through crude, unorthodox means and harassment.

“Painfully, these taxes yield very little revenue to the government despite the huge burden they place on small businesses, artisans and transporters.”

Oyedele said the issue he raised in the interview was not about employing more tax collectors but about finding common ground with those already involved, who have an unofficial stake in the system.

“We propose to eliminate many of these taxes and harmonise a few of them that may be appropriate and devise a civil means of collection using mobile phones,” he said.

Oyedele said the issue he addressed was sensationalised and taken out of context.

According to the tax expert, he was talking about how to “get the buy-in of those who currently collect these taxes (and benefit from doing so beyond whatever they are being paid officially)”.

“I did not mention any word like recruit or employ. My thought on it beyond the legal aspect was to consider the social dimension and find a practical solution that has a high chance of success,” he said.

“The idea is that the government could train the collectors to behave in a civilised manner and pay them decently so that it is comparable to what they currently make.

“Their new role will be to drive and monitor compliance. The payers will pay less and be treated with dignity. Government will earn more, and society will benefit – a win-win outcome for everyone.”

In October 2023, the presidential committee led by Oyedele presented a quick win report which contained 20 recommendations.

President Bola Tinubu, upon receiving the document, directed an immediate implementation of the recommendations.

We’ve returned to Buhari era – CUPP kicks over Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips

0

The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has disagreed with President Bola Tinubu over his recent private trip to France.

The group wonders why the president would be embarking on such a trip while, according to it, Nigeria is in dire need of leadership.

CUPP said it is disturbed and not happy by the frequency of Tinubu’s so-called private trips to France, adding that the country may have just returned to the Buhari era.

It recommends that, while choosing a leader, a comprehensive health and fitness test be made compulsory so that Nigerians will avoid this situation in the future.

“It is our hope and belief that these private trips do not involve something untoward that is hidden from Nigerians who voted for him to salvage the country, which has been in a downward spiral,” the coalition said in a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Peter Ameh.

“Tongues have begun to wag, and speculations are beginning to abound about the real reasons for these private trips.

“We hope that Nigeria is not about to witness another Buhari 2.0 presidency where, from time to time, without any form of announcement, the President would sneak out of the country to a foreign country for medical treatment in the name of private visit.

“President Tinubu should realise that Nigeria is beset on all sides by insecurity, galloping inflation, hunger and starvation, unemployment that is running wild and out of control, etcetera. The value of the naira is speeding southward, with our currency exchanging at almost a thousand five hundred naira to the United States dollar.”

CUPP said it feels and recommends “that the country needs a hands-on-deck president, and whatever the reason for these private visits can be conveniently handled in Nigeria or in the absence of such facilities being available, provision should be urgently made to have them brought to Nigeria.

“Nigeria needs the physical presence of their president to have that assurance that the job of Mr. President has not been outsourced to those who have no business exercising it.”

Sentuo Refinery will help reduce dependence on foreign products -Prez

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the Sentuo Oil Refinery on January 27, 2024 describing it as a symbol of the government’s commitment to being energy self-sufficient.

According to the President, the prevalent situation where ninety-seven percent of the country’s current consumption of petroleum products is imported is worrying. This situation, he observed, results in a heavy reliance on external sources.

“This over-reliance not only poses economic challenges such as high costs and the constant drain on our foreign currency reserves, but also limits our ability to control prices and ensure a stable supply,” he said.

He continued that: “it is why the establishment of this refinery signifies our commitment to reducing this dependence, achieving self-sufficiency and driving the growth of our domestic petroleum industry.”

FACILITY

The Sentuo Oil Refinery, owned by Sentuo Group, a Chinese conglomerate, is Ghana’s first private refinery.

The President cut sod for its construction in 2022 under the ‘One District, One Factory’ initiative.

A front view of the Sentuo Oil Refinery in Tema

The Sentuo Oil Refinery has an initial processing capacity of 40,000 barrels per day and a 100,000 barrel capacity when in full operation.

Phase one of the refinery will refine two million tonnes of oil per year and phase two, to be completed in 2024, will produce five million tonnes annually.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

In his view, the facility represents not just brick and mortar, but also the nation’s determination to reduce dependency on foreign oil and inspire investment in the economy.

He commended the efforts of the Chinese promoter, Mr. Xu Ning Quan, saying that his collective work in the past fifteen years has culminated in strengthening the industrialisation agenda of the government.

He mentioned that beyond providing a stable supply of petroleum products, the refinery will create jobs and drive investment, adding to the Fujian Sentuo Ceramic Company Limited he commissioned in February 2018.

TOR

The new private oil refinery has become a neighbour to the publicly owned Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), which has been rendered unproductive.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo assured the gathering of the government’s unflinching commitment to revamp TOR.

He said the government “will stop at nothing to bring it (TOR) back on stream, so that, together with Sentuo [Oil Refinery] more and more of our oil will be refined right here in Ghana.”

LONGSTANDING TIES

The Executive Chairman of the Sentuo Group, Xu Ning Quan, noted that the setting up of the refinery in Ghana reflected the long-standing ties between his country, China and Ghana.

He observed that the development underscored what nations can achieve when the private sector is supported.

Xu Ning Quan thanked the government for creating a conducive and enabling atmosphere for the sector to thrive, adding that the refinery would bolster Ghana’s quest for energy efficiency and sustainability.

In attendance were the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, former President John Agyekum Kuffuor the first Deputy Speaker, Joseph Owusu, the Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey and others.

Mahama promises to transform Obuasi

0
Mr. John Dramani Mahamah

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mr. John Dramani Mahamah has stressed the need for a possible facelift for Obuasi, as a town, where gold has been mined for over a hundred years. He said the present state of Obuasi is an eyesore that must be rectified.

Speaking at the Bonsra Afriyie Palace, at Adansi Fomena, where he and his entourage had called on the Adansihene Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II, on their way to New Edubiase for a Town Hall meeting, Mr. Mahamah said Johannesberg in South Africa is a city to behold, for the mere fact that profits from gold were used to beautify the city, and said the same can be done for Obuasi.

“Nana, when I come back as President, we shall put our heads together to change the present state of Obuasi”, he said.

He assured Ghanaians that the NDC will do everything within its power to ensure peaceful elections in December, this year, noting “we are the sons and daughters of Prof. Atta Mills, the Asomdweehene”.

NDC flagbearer Mahama shaking hands with the Adansihene

The Adansihene, on his part, said the country’s biggest problem is the constitution and urged Mr. Mahama to do something about it if he wins political power.

“The constitution should be structured in such a way that it will punish people who perpetuate corruption”, the Adansihene suggested.

Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia paid glowing tribute to the late Mr. P.V. Obeng, a native of Adansi Akrokerri, for nurturing the NDC to become what it is today.

Speaking at the Town Hall meeting at New Edubiase, Mr. Mahama pledged to complete the local sports stadium he started when he comes back.

He also pledged to increase the percentage of PWDs share of the District Assemblies Common Fund.
