Ghanaian revered politician, Sam George has sparked a debate concerning the prevalence of divorce in modern society as he attributes it to telenovelas.

According to him, individuals these days perceive the events depicted in these television shows as reality and strive to emulate them in their own lives which is a far-fetched situation.

He added that, these foreign films have portrayed a specific cultural perspective on marriages, which individuals in the real world also strive to adopt in their own lives.

Additionally, he highlights the reluctance of many people to invest their time and efforts into sustaining a successful marriage.

Taiwan's President-elect Lai Ching-te (centre left) celebrates his victory

William Lai Ching-te from the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has won Taiwan’s presidential election, despite warnings from China – which claims Taiwan as part of its territory – not to vote for him.

The DPP does not represent the mainstream public opinion on the island, Beijing said after Lai was named the winner of Saturday’s vote, adding that the vote “will not impede the inevitable trend of China’s reunification”.

Lai, the current vice president, was in a three-way race with Hou Yu-ih from the conservative Kuomintang (KMT) and former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je from the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), which was only founded in 2019.

With votes from all polling stations counted on Saturday, the Central Election Commission said Lai won 40.1 percent, ahead of Hou’s 33.5 percent.

Hou conceded defeat and congratulated Lai on his victory. He also apologised to KMT supporters for not being able to remove the DPP. Ko also conceded defeat.

Boeing flight returns to Japan airport due to window crack

Boeing flight

A domestic flight of Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) has returned to its departure airport after a crack was found on the cockpit window of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft midair.

Flight 1182 was headed to Toyama airport in Japan but headed back to the Sapporo-New Chitose airport after the crack was found on the outermost of four layers of windows surrounding the cockpit, a spokesperson for the airline said on Saturday.

There were no injuries reported among the 59 passengers and six crew, the airline added.

“The crack was not something that affected the flight’s control or pressurisation,” the ANA spokesperson said.

This is the second incident involving a Boeing aircraft in a week.

The ANA plane, also a 737 model aircraft, is however not one of Boeing’s 737 MAX 9 aeroplanes which have been in the spotlight since an Alaska Airlines flight suffered a blowout that left a gaping hole in the side of the fuselage last Saturday.

While the Alaska flight also landed safely with all 174 passengers and six crew members, flight data showed the plane climbed to 16,000 feet (4,876 metres) before returning to Portland International Airport.

Alaska Airlines has said it was grounding its fleet of 737-9 aircraft.

Namibia criticises German support for Israel over ICJ genocide case

President Hage Geingob has appealed to Germany to retract their support of Israel

Namibia has condemned former colonial ruler Germany for rejecting a case at a UN court accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

Germany has offered to intervene on Israel’s behalf in the case brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

President Hage Geingob urged Germany to “reconsider its untimely decision to intervene as a third-party in defence”.

In 2021 Berlin acknowledged committing genocide in Namibia.

German colonisers massacred more than 70,000 Herero and Nama people between 1904 and 1908. Historians consider this to be the 20th Century’s first genocide.

President Geingob said Germany could not “morally express commitment to the United Nations Convention against genocide, including atonement for the genocide in Namibia” and at the same time support Israel.

“The German Government is yet to fully atone for the genocide it committed on Namibian soil” he added.

On Friday the German government said the accusation of genocide against Israel was completely unfounded and amounted to a “political instrumentalisation” of the UN genocide convention.

The CHIPS compound being inaugurated

The chief of Battor-Atsiekpoe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, Torgbe Akatti V, has made a passionate appeal to government and philanthropists to help them reconstruct their Museum, which was collapsed by the recent flood waters from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams spillage.

The chiefs and their MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa after the inauguration of the CHIPS compound

He noted that, as the village was cut off by the floods, parts of the community were inundated by the flood waters, which collapsed some mud houses, including the Museum.

A new CHIPS compound that was inaugurated in the town

The Museum, he disclosed, had been in existence for many years and was one of the major tourist attraction in the village and Ghana.

‘As it is now, we don’t have a place to store our artefacts and antiquities because the Akosombo Dam flood has collapsed our Museum,’ the chief lamented.

In a release by Ex WOI Bright Segbefia, an opinion leader of the community, Torgbe Akatti V was speaking at the community’s annual fund-raising festival, attended by dignitaries, including Rev Francis Amewuho Segbefia of God’s Power Mission and Torgbe Tuidedzi.

Torgbe Akatti V described the collapse of the Museum as a huge blow to the preservation of their heritage and that urgent attention is required to reconstruct it.

The target of the festival was to raise funds to put up an official residence for the midwife of the CHPS Compound put up by the community through Self-Help.

The chief said the absence of official accommodation for the midwife is hampering her smooth operation, since she lives far away from the health facility, which was commissioned in 2022.

He appealed to the indigenes to maintain unity and love for the development of the community. According to the release, the occasion was also used to outdoor the Queen mother of the community, Mama Kekesi Nyadeasi III.

She pledged her preparedness to work for the unity and progress of the community and appealed for support from the natives.

Another project in the town

In his speech, Patrick Amega, chairman of the occasion, entreated parents to prioritise their children’s education, reminding them that education was key to the development of any community.

“The education of your children should be more important to you than any material possession because your joy and comfort in the future rest largely on the kinds of investments you make today in their education,” he intoned.

Colombia landslide

The death toll from a landslide in north-west Colombia has risen to at least 33 people with children accounting for most of the victims, the vice president says. Nineteen others were injured and rescue operations are ongoing.

Landslides had already closed the road connecting the cities of Medellín and Quibdo so people left their cars and sheltered in a house, an official said.

Another landslide then happened, burying them and some of the vehicles.

Colombian President Gustavo Preto has pledged “all help available” to the Choco region.

The landslide took place near the community of Carmen de Atrato, a local official said.

As many as 60 people were seeking shelter near a junction. The house was full of women and young children, one man who survived the ordeal told local media.

In a post on X, Vice President Francia Márquez Mina said relief agencies, local authorities, police and the army had all been deployed to support search and rescue efforts in the Choco province.

The tragedy has rocked the South American country, with blanket media coverage and many expressing shock and condolences on social media.

US delivers ‘private message’ to Iran after Yemen strikes

Satellite photos released show damage in Hudaydah after US-UK strikes

President Biden says the US has delivered a “private message” to Iran about the Houthis in Yemen after the US carried out a second strike on the group.

“We delivered it privately and we’re confident we’re well-prepared,” he said without giving further details.

The US said its latest strike was a “follow-on action” targeting radar.

Iran denies involvement in attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea.

However Tehran is suspected of supplying the Houthis with weapons, and the US says Iranian intelligence is critical to enabling them to target ships.

Joint UK-US airstrikes targeted nearly 30 Houthi positions in the early hours of Friday with the support of Western allies including Australia and Canada.

A day later, the US Central Command said it carried out its latest strike on a Houthi radar site in Yemen using Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles.

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Britain had “no choice” but to take military action against the Houthis in Yemen, in response to their attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Writing in the Telegraph, he said UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had agreed to a request by the US to assist with the “limited and targeted” strikes.

A Houthi spokesman told Reuters the strikes had no significant impact on the group’s ability to affect shipping.

“Nobody will stop us” from destroying Hamas, as Israel marks 100 days of war -Netanyahu

0
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed “nobody will stop us” from destroying Hamas as the war between Israel and the militant group reached its 100th day.

Netanyahu suggested that Israel would not comply with the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Israel is accused of genocide and could be ordered to halt its offensive.

“Nobody will stop us – not The Hague, not the axis of evil and not anybody else,” he emphasized during a press briefing on Saturday, referring to Iran and its aligned groups across the Middle East.

Netanyahu said the genocide claims, brought by South Africa on Thursday, were a “hypocritical onslaught,” adding that it was “at the behest of those who came to perpetrate another Holocaust against the Jews”

This “is a moral low point in the history of nations,” Netanyahu said.

The prime minister also claimed several antisemitic items were found in Hamas tunnels in Gaza, including copies of Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.” In addition, Netanyahu said, “in a home in Gaza, they found a child’s tablet with a picture of Hitler as the screensaver.”

Netanyahu stated that while antisemitism is the same, the Jewish people are different and will fight “until the end.”
