GRA to build a 500-bed hospital for officers

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has hinted at far-reaching plans to build a 500-bed hospital to take care of the health needs of officers.
The move, according to the Authority, is part of measures to particularly cater for the health needs of retired officers whose health conditions deteriorate due to ageing after active service.

Ernest Samuel Ackwerh, RECOA President

The Acting Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Bismark Kissi, revealed this in response to a concern raised by the leadership of the retired Customs officers.

Ernest Samuel Ackwerh, President of the Retired Customs Officers Association (RECOA), at their annual get-together, as well as 70th and 80th birthday anniversaries of some retired officers in Accra described the current one thousand Ghana Cedis annual medical bills refund for a retired officer woefully inadequate, given the cost of seeking medical attention in Ghana currently.

“Thousand cedis as medical expenses refund for retired officers who had worked tirelessly to raise revenue for the nation…we feel is an insult to our persons,” he stressed.

Given this, Mr Ackwerh proposed that a different arrangement be made concerning their medical issues since the current situation is discouraging.

“I suggest that the GRA make health insurance arrangements for us because even the increment we are calling for will be negligible,” he added.

The RECOA President also had reservations about the current management of contributions in support of retired officers.

He said: “We contributed to support the Retired Customs Officers Fund during our active service, however, we are not happy with how the current executive is handling the fund.”

The Acting Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Bismark Kissi, who represented the Commissioner General, in a sharp response, disclosed a resolve at a recent management meeting that medical expenses of retired officers and their spouses would, henceforth, be fully taken care of.

Additionally, he said the organisation had gone far with moves to establish a 500-bed hospital to resolve the medical concerns of officers.

The Acting Deputy Commissioner of Customs, in response to another request by the retirees, revealed the organisation’s intention to build its recreational centre.

“We have gone far to acquire land at Kwabenya to put up our recreational centre. We hope that this plan comes to fruition for us to gather and enjoy at our clubhouse and not be at the facilities of our sister organisations,” he noted.

Retired officers who had turned 70 and 80 years were given a token of GH¢300 and GH¢500 respectively, in addition to citations for being alive ten and twenty years after retiring from active service.

The retirees were advised to avoid junk foods, alcohol and promiscuity but engage in moderate exercise to keep them more active.

They told Joy FM via mail that Afua could not make the mark because she did not adhere to some of their rules.

On Friday, February 23, 2024, the Guinness World Records announced that Ghana’s Afua Asantewaa failed to break the longest singing marathon she attempted in December 2023.

At the time she ended her record attempt on Friday morning, she had sung for five days, six hours and 55 minutes.

She stated, “I would announce my next line of action in a few days. Thank you all for your love and support.”

An attack on a mosque in eastern Burkina Faso killed dozens of Muslims on the same day as another deadly attack on Catholics attending mass, local and security sources have told the AFP news agency.

“Armed individuals attacked a mosque in Natiaboani on Sunday around 5am, resulting in several dozen being killed,” a security source told the AFP on Monday.

“The victims were all Muslims, most of them men” who had come for morning prayers, a local resident said by telephone.

Another local source said, “The terrorists entered the town early morning. They surrounded the mosque and shot at the faithful, who were gathered there for the first prayer of the day. Several of them were shot, including an important religious leader.”

Soldiers and members of the Volunteers for the Defence of the Fatherland (VDP), a civilian force that supports the military, were also targeted “by these hordes who came in large numbers”, the source said.

The source described it as a “large-scale attack” in terms of the number of assailants, who also wreaked substantial damage. The authorities are yet to comment on the attack.

Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny was close to being freed in a prisoner swap before his sudden death, according to his ally Maria Pevchikh.

In a video posted to YouTube on Monday, Pevchikh claimed the planned swap involved exchanging Navalny and two unnamed US nationals for Vadim Krasikov, a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) assassin in Germany.

Navalny, an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died at 47 in an Artic penal colony, where he was serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges when he reportedly collapsed after a walk on the prison grounds.

“Alexey Navalny could be sitting in this seat right now, right today. That’s not a figure of speech, it could and should have happened,” said Pevchikh.

A German spokesperson told a press conference on Monday that the government was aware of the reports of an alleged swap, but could not comment on them.

Japan Moon lander survives lunar night

Jaxa produced this render of Slim to show the awkward landing orientation

Japan’s Moon lander has survived the harsh lunar night, the sunless and freezing equivalent to two Earth weeks. “Last night, a command was sent to #SLIM and a response received,” national space agency Jaxa said on X. The craft was put into sleep mode after an awkward landing in January left its solar panels facing the wrong way and unable to generate power.

A change in sunlight direction later allowed it to send pictures back but it shut down again as lunar night fell. Jaxa said at the time that Slim (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) was not designed for the harsh lunar nights. It said it planned to try to operate again from mid-February, when the Sun would shine again on Slim’s solar cells.

Dr Barber explained that Slim landed near the Moon’s equator, where the lunar surface reaches more than 100C at noon, but then plunges to -130C during the lunar night.

Jaxa said that communication with the lander was terminated after a short time – it was lunar midday, meaning the temperature of the communications equipment was very high.

The family of the boy (left) receiving cheque for the boys medical cost

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Jomoro, Dorcas Afo-Toffey, has given hope to the family of a six-year-old boy suffering from Hyposdadias at Half-Assini.

When all hope seemed lost by the family of the innocent child, given the severity of the ailment, the Legislator extended her benevolence to them by taking up the medical cost of the ailment.

Hypospadias is a medical condition where the penis and the scrotum are fused together.

This act of generosity evidently has taken the financial burden off the family.

Both the boys family and the MP representtaive at the boys house to offer the cheque

For now, what the family must do is to prioritise the child’s recovery and well-being without the added pressure of having to look for money to cater for the medical cost.

The Chronicle understands that the financial support being extended to the family by the Legislator has given them hope that the child will survive.

The latest intervention by the MP brings up to 350, the number of people who have been supported the Jomoro Legislator in her constituency.

A representative of the family, Matthew Aduko Ackah, saw it as a dream when the rep of the MP, Fidelis Somiah, presented the cheque covering the medical expenses of the boy to him. According to him, he never thought that the MP would come to their aid though the ailment the boy is suffering is known to everyone at Hlaf-Assini.

To Aduko Ackah, what the MP had done demonstrated her love, care and as a family “we are short of words to describe MP’s gesture”.

Fidelis Somiah, a representative of the MP told the family the gesture exemplified the MP’s unwavering commitment to serving her constituents and easing the financial struggles of those in need.

The presentation was led by Fidelis Somiah, an assistant to the MP, accompanied by David Somiah, the constituency director of elections, Grandpere, constituency deputy Organiser and Miss Patricia Enstuah, deputy constituency Treasurer.
