Gov Abdulrazaq not involved in trial of any cleric –State govt clarifies

Gov Abdulrazaq Kwara State governor

Kwara State government has debunked allegations of the involvement of Governor, Malam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaqis with the prosecution of an Ilorin-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abdulrazaq Solihudeen who launched verbal attacks on Senator Suleiman Makanjuola Ajadi in a viral video.

A statement by the governor’s spokesman, Rafiu Ajakaye in Ilorin on Monday, urged members of the public to disregard what it described as a fake story that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is involved in the prosecution of a Muslim cleric Sheikh Abdulrazaq Solihudeen who had launched verbal attacks on Senator Suleiman Ajadi in a viral video.

The spokesman’s reaction came shortly after the Upper Area Court in Ilorin refused to hear the direct complaint matter and asked the parties to settle the matter amicably outside the court in the spirit of the Holy month of Ramadan.

The statement reads in part; “the cleric, as seen in the video he made to condemn the Senator Ajadi committee, was opposed to the state government seeking accountability in how public properties were sold without proper remittances to the treasury or due process.

“Neither the governor nor the state government was aware of the video until it was shared on some online platforms on Sunday afternoon.

“The governor could not have sued on an issue he was not aware of, so the claims that he is behind the trial of the cleric are a piece of fake news. Those behind the story are the usual agents of disinformation who just wanted to cause disharmony in the state for political gains.

“The governor understands the burden of public office and the possibility of his being misunderstood, including the right of every citizen to hold or express contrary views within lawful boundaries. He remains focused on the discharge of his duties and is confident that posterity will judge him fairly.

“Similarly, the governor concedes the right of any aggrieved citizen(s) to seek redress in lawful ways as no one is allowed to unfairly incite hatred against another person or resort to self-help under whatever guise,” the statement added.

ECG intensifies monitoring of transformers & substations

Officials inspecting some of the installations

The Electricity Company of Ghana, Accra West region, has intensified compliance with the Company’s Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP). The AMP is a strategic document that outlines specific maintenance activities to be carried out on the Company’s electrical network.

Activities under the AMP include monitoring and maintenance of overhead conductors, underground cables and substation equipment like transformers and switchgears (extensible switches, ring main unit etc.).

To engender regular compliance with the AMP, the Accra West region has outlined strategies including night monitoring and deployment of more teams, to augment the already stretched technical maintenance team that works during the day.

Speaking during a planned maintenance visit to the “A201” substation at Mama’s Inn, Dansoman, the Accra West Regional Engineer, Ing. Emmanuel Ankrah, highlighted the objectives of the AMP.

“The AMP makes it mandatory for us to visit our technical equipment at least once  every quarter. During these visits, we do routine inspection, undertake planned maintenance exercises and correct any identified defects”, he said.

Ing. Ankrah added that due to the recent heat wave, ECG has recorded an increased demand for more electricity in some communities, especially during peak load hours. “Our data shows that the electricity demand in some communities during peak load hours are up to the full capacity of their installed transformers, leading to faults and outages. These transformers have been earmarked for upgrade or injections to relieve some load and ensure more reliable supply,” he said.

The General Manager for the Accra West region, Ing Emmanuel Akinie, assured customers of the region’s readiness to ensure that electricity distribution is not curtailed by localised faults. He noted that fault teams have been stationed at vantage points to respond quickly to customer complaints, repair faults and restore supply, at any time during the day, across all operational districts in the region.

Outlining some advantages of a strict compliance with the AMP schedule, Ing. Akinie said the  frequency of localized faults leading to outages will be reduced, while the lifespan of technical equipment will be prolonged. Also, the Company gets to know and monitor the load on each distribution transformer especially during peak hours of the day

The Accra west region has a total of 2,802 distribution transformers, made up of 2,030 pole mounted transformers and 772 ground mounted transformers.

The Accra West region has eight operational districts. These are Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korlebu and Nsawam.

John Dumelo highlights reasons for losing Parliamentary seat

John Dumelo

Actor-turned-politician, John Dumelo has revealed three key reasons behind his loss in the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary elections in 2020.

During an interview with Bola Ray, Dumelo cited several factors that contributed to his defeat, highlighting significant setbacks encountered during the campaign.

One crucial factor, according to Dumelo, was the absence of students from tertiary institutions within the constituency during the election period.

This absence, he explained, adversely affected his vote count, as he believed he could have garnered more support if students had been present on campus.

Another setback Dumelo acknowledged was the insufficient attention given to door-to-door campaigning by his team.

He admitted that while they engaged in door-to-door activities, they did not cover all areas adequately, hindering their ability to reach a significant portion of constituents and solicit their backing.

The actor also acknowledged unspecified mishaps that occurred during the election period, which contributed to his loss. While he did not elaborate on these incidents, he emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes.

Looking ahead to the 2024 parliamentary elections, Mr Dumelo expressed confidence in his ability to secure victory, noting that he had learned valuable lessons from his previous campaign. He emphasized the need to work smartly, leveraging the strengths and weaknesses of opponents to his advantage.

As he prepares to contest against the incumbent, Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dumelo assured that he and his team have thoroughly assessed their past performance, identified areas for improvement, and are determined to mount a stronger campaign in the upcoming elections.

Okyeame Kwame explains why many Artistes resort to drug, sex addictions

Okyeame Kwame

Hiplife Artiste, Okyeame Kwame, has explained why many Artistes and Creatives turn to substance abuse. In an interview on Joy Prince, which was monitored by The Chronicle, Okyeame Kwame remarked that most creatives turn to drugs due to their reluctance to reflect deeply on their thoughts and deeds, which would have allowed them to learn valuable lessons.

“If you close your eyes and sit down for 10 seconds, immediately, all the problems you have in life will come into your brain. Because your brain is so smart that it’s always trying to solve your problem. So immediately you keep quiet, all your problems come up.

“That is why people are always trying to watch a movie, always trying to read a book, trying to talk to somebody, trying to have sex, trying to drink alcohol, and trying to smoke something to divert their brains from dealing with their problems.

“And that is the time when artistes are not willing to sit down quietly for their thoughts to punish them. But immediately they feel the problems come up, they take it, and then all the problems will go away because they have numbed their pain receptors…” he said.

Okyeame Kwame narrated his personal battle with depression and how he dealt with it by going into a meditative state for a year.

Salma Mumin

Actress Salma Mumin has come out swinging against allegations that her lavish lifestyle is funded by illicit means. She maintains that she’s successful today because of her entrepreneurial ventures.

In an interview on the latest edition of the Delay Show, Salma refuted claims that she relies on wealthy men to fund her lifestyle, insisting that her businesses fund her flashy lifestyle.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, the Seduction actress disclosed that her clothing and food enterprises have been instrumental in bankrolling her expensive life.

“Yes, my clothing business and food ventures sponsor my trips. I am a very beautiful woman, but my success is a result of hard work and entrepreneurship, not just appearances,” she confidently said.

Addressing the shifting connotations of the term “slay queen,” she lamented the evolution from women who epitomised elegance and affluence to those associated with transactional relationships.

“When slay queen started, it was women who could dress well and live a good life, but with time, the definition changed to girls who were into runs, so I just had to refrain from it,” she explained.

The actress also revealed that she’s been blessed with beauty that attracts wealthy men who favour her in many ways.

“I am a beautiful woman and I’m lucky when it comes to wealthy men. I’m not even attracted to men who are not rich,” she said.

French archaeologists dig out medieval castle

Excavation work uncovering the moat at the Castle

Inrap says it carried out the dig – commissioned by the Vannes city council – early last year to check for remains before the 18th-century building on site underwent construction to become a fine arts museum.

Digging in the manor’s courtyard and cellars, archaeologists found an outer wall and moat, Inrap announced last week. They also excavated evidence of a bridge over the moat and a mill within the castle’s residential area.

The bridge allowed access to the city, Inrap said, while adding that the mill was built “in a very original way”. Four metres down, Inrap said it “unexpectedly uncovered the ground floor” measuring 42 metres long and 17 metres wide, surrounded by walls six metres thick.

Among the other discoveries were drainage pipes and latrines, filled with items including jewellery, clothing, utensils and coins dating back to the 15th century.

Mozambique after unlicensed ferry boat capsizes

At least 94 people died, including children, and 26 are missing after a ferry boat capsized off the northern coast of Mozambique, an official from the country’s Maritime Transport Institute (INTRASMAR) said.

The vessel was an overloaded fishing boat and was not licensed to transport people, Lourenco Machado, an administrator of INSTRASMAR, said on state television on Monday.

“On Sunday we registered a maritime incident where at least 94 people died when a barge carrying 130 people capsized. We have recovered 94 bodies and 26 are missing,” he said.

The boat was ferrying people from Lunga in Nampula province to Mozambique Island, he said, adding that initial reports indicated that it was hit by a tidal wave. The passengers were fleeing a cholera outbreak, said state broadcaster TVM, citing another local maritime administrator.

Jaime Neto, secretary of state for Nampula province, also said that the passengers were fleeing cholera, according to the BBC.

Anti-coup forces claim control of key Myanmar border town

Karen National Union (KNU) is Myanmar's oldest ethnic armed group

Myanmar’s military appears to have abandoned the strategically important border town of Myawaddy on the eastern border with Thailand, after a sustained assault by an alliance of anti-coup fighters.

Thai PBS reported on Monday that more than 600 Myanmar nationals, including 67 military officers and 410 non-commissioned officers as well as their family members, were waiting for entry to Thailand after the regime in Naypyidaw requested permission for an aircraft to land on the Thai side to collect the group.

The Karen National Union (KNU) earlier said that soldiers from its armed wing, the Karen National Liberation Army, in alliance with anti-coup fighters from the People’s Defence Force (PDF), had taken control of the military base in the town, sharing photos of weapons and ammunition they said they had seized.

Myawaddy lies just across the border from Mae Sot in Thailand and is a major trading route.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said that even with the renewed fighting since the February 2021 coup, bilateral trade across the checkpoint between April 2023 and March 2024 amounted to more than $1bn and Myawaddy’s loss was significant.

Hong Kong makes largest-ever gold smuggling bust

0
Hong Kong is one of the world's largest gold trading hubs

Hong Kong authorities have made the city’s largest ever gold smuggling bust, seizing 146kg of the precious metal disguised as machine parts. The haul is estimated to be worth more than $10m (£8m) and was intercepted last month on route to Japan.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested and released on bail pending further investigations. Smuggling is a serious offence and carries up to seven years in jail under Hong Kong law.

Customs officials say they made the discovery while examining two air compressors – departing in a cargo shipment to Japan on 27 March – which drew suspicions due to their unusual texture and weight.

An examination ultimately found both were riddled with gold that had been “moulded and camouflaged” into parts such as gears, screws, and motor cores, according to a government statement on Monday. Authorities have suggested a crime syndicate looking to evade taxes in Japan may have been behind the operation.
