Omanhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II

The Omanhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, has gratefully welcomed the conferment of an Honorary Degree of Law on him by the University of Cape Coast.

He has, subsequently, praised the University for appreciating what he termed as his little effort meant to ensure absolute peace and equanimity between the UCC and its host communities over the years.

At a brief engagement with the media at the Emintsimadze Palace in Cape Coast, Osabarima indicated that he was thrilled by the fact that the University of Cape Coast has recognised his efforts and quest for peace.

“I am particularly motivated by this honour done me by the University and this honour will go a long way to encourage me to do more to bring absolute peace to the University in order to raise high the image of the school,” he stated.

The Cape Coast Paramount Chief expressed a heartfelt appreciation to the management of the University for the recognition and his commitment to peace building.

Concern over poor performance

Osabarima was extremely worried about the inability of a higher number of indigenous students from Cape Coast to gain admission to the high-status University.

He mentioned that though there were prestigious Senior High Schools in the Cape Coast Metropolis, many pupils from Cape Coast Basic Schools mostly struggled to get admitted into those schools.

He blamed the situation on poor performance at the basic high school level adding that the situation required urgent attention.

He, therefore, called for a holistic review of the situation by all stakeholders and also called for concerted efforts from all to help improve the situation so that more indigenous students could gain admission.

Conferment of Honorary Degree

In recognition of the Omanhen of Cape Coast’s quest for peace within the University community, the University of Cape Coast has conferred an Honorary Degree of Law on Osabarima Kwesi Atta II.

At a colourful ceremony, the Chancellor of the University, Dr. Sir Sam Esson Jonah, touted the leadership qualities of Osabarima Kwesi Atta and further indicated that the chief has been committed to peace.

He added, “Osabarima’s love for Cape Coast, his contributions to the university, his role in promoting regional unity and peace, and his advocacy for local development makes him an exemplary Honoree. Indeed, this honour is long overdue”.

Editorial: Proposed increases in transport fares must be clearly communicated

0
Editorial

The Association of Passengers Ghana is concerned about the lack of clear communication from transport operators regarding proposed increases in transport fares across the country.

The Association’s convener, Afia Kwarteng Asamani, emphasised the need for clear communication to avoid confusion and uphold the interests of both commuters and drivers. The Association called for swift action by engaging members on approved fares and ensuring transparent communication with the public.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council issued joint advisory urging commuters to refrain from paying new fares that have not been officially approved.

This advisory comes in response to the announcement made by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, regarding a proposed 30% increase in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, April 13. In their joint press release, the GPRTU and the GRTCC attributed the decision to raise fares to the government’s perceived failure to address lingering grievances within the transport sector adequately.

The Association of Passengers Ghana’s discontent over the lack of transparent communication from transport operators regarding fare adjustments underscores the need for clarity and transparency in such matters.

This ambiguity has led to confusion among commuters and drivers alike, potentially escalating tensions and creating an unfavorable situation for all involved.

It is crucial to address this issue promptly and decisively. Failure to do so could exacerbate misunderstandings and further strain the already challenging circumstances faced by both commuters and transport operators.

The Chronicle sees as commendable the call by the Association of Passengers Ghana for swift action from transport operators to engage their members and ensure transparent communication with the public is commendable. Clear and accurate information regarding approved fare adjustments is essential to prevent misunderstandings and foster a harmonious relationship between passengers and transport providers.

While acknowledging the recent increases in fuel prices and other factors necessitating fare adjustments, it is paramount that the approved fares are explicitly stated and widely disseminated. Whether the increase is 20% or 30%, clarity in communication is key to averting confusion and promoting understanding among all stakeholders.

The recent joint advisory issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), urging commuters to refrain from paying unapproved fares is a step in the right direction. This advisory underscores the importance of adherence to established procedures and official approvals in implementing fare adjustments.

However, the confusion and disagreement that have arisen following the announcement of a proposed 30% fare increase indicate the urgent need for a more coordinated and transparent approach.

The Ministry of Transport, GPRTU, GRTCC and other relevant bodies must work together to ensure that approved fares are communicated clearly and uniformly to all stakeholders to avoid further confusion.

Who Partners Bawumia? asks Nkrabeah Effah Dartey

Opinion

I was born in Jinijini, near Brekum. I was educated in Achimota School and I read law at Legon. I was a very noisy student at Achimota and Legon. So, when I joined the Army negative propaganda about me led to the Military Intelligence arresting and jailing me via Court Matial.

Rawlings released me and he too became suspicious of me and arrested me detained me for 6 months and pushed me out of the military.

I went to the law school became a lawyer and concentrated on making money as a lawyer and building a family. I was so scared of politics that I felt so relieved when one day BNI Director Peter Nanfuri told me “We have stopped following you- always women and theatre……………”

You can therefore imagine how I felt when one day in 1998 a three-man delegation came all the way from Jinijini to my law office in Accra. Of course, I knew all of them, all of them Presby Church Choir members.

Yes, folks, what is the problem?

“Captain, Brekum NPP Constituency Executives say that JH Owusu Achapong of NDC always win the elections with votes from the villages as the next biggest community outside Brekum, the NPP says we in JINIJINI should produce a candidate for Election 2000 and we want you.

Reader, I was chosen on a silver platter on SCIENTIFIC BASIS.

The late Major Quarshiegah, the NPP National Organizer told us at an Election Seminar in June 2000 at Cape Cost that election is a scientific battle to be won or lost on scientific basis.

Sit in the boardroom, draw the profile of a winning Candidate then look for the person closest to the profile, AND YOU WILL WIN!!!

Dr Bawumia will win Election 2024 depending on WHO he chooses as his Running mate. NDC is already fielding a battle tested team of John Mahama and Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang. How about NPP?

Reading the media landscape, so many names are making the rounds, but if Dr Bawumia is reading me, the FINAL decision rests with him, and not anybody else, no matter how influential the person is in Ghana today. According to American history, one most fovoured Republican Party Candidate selected a Runing mate who it turned out had a history of mental problem………. need I say that he LOST?

What then is the profile of the successful partner?

The Party’s stronghold is AKAN, so, with a Northerner as a Flagbearer, the Running mate must be AKAN.

The Flagbearer is a Moslem, who are less than 20% of the Ghanaian population, majority of whom already constitute the backbone of NDC. You therefore need a very STRONG Christian crowd pulling person to effectively neutralize the threat from Alan Kywemanteng.

Against this background, for me, Captain, even though I have never met him, I think Apostle ONYINAH, an Asante and one time head of the biggest Christian movement in Ghana Church of Pentecost is the best person to partner Dr Bawumia.

Let us bury our differences and parochial interests and unite behind a winning team Bawumia/Onyinah, and when we win, which is all that matters, we can under the canopy of these two powerful figures continue our internal struggles.

NDC is NOT made up of demons, and neither are we of NPP SAINTS. We are not. All of us have doubtful skeletons in our cupboards.

What we need now are political sharp shooters to jump onto the band wagon and tell Ghanaians that not only free SHS but no Government in history of Ghana has built more asphaltic roads than NPP in the last 7 years. Look at the massive freedom we enjoy in Ghana both electronic and print media…………..

Anybody who read Ebo Quansah’s famous piece in the “Chronicle” about John Mahama’s bid for returning to power will never vote for the NDC. Bawumia and Apostle Onyina together have no skeletons anywhere (cupboard or suitcases)

Over to you, Doctor Bawumia.

Bonwire Kente weavers land lucrative business …Following demand for Kente stolls by Harvard students

Young Black Americans students proudly don Ghana’s Kente stoll

Ghana’s Kente fabric has gotten a huge boost as Black American students from the prestigious Harvard University are craving for Kente stolls for graduation ceremonies.

It is likely that Howard University, the best black historic university in USA, would also buy the idea of allowing their graduating students to use Ghana’s Kente stolls.

The first batch of Kente stolls from Bonwire ready for Harvard University

The craze for Kente stolls followed the premiering of the documentary film on Kente, “The importance of Kente to Ghanaians and Black Americans” by Amma Prempeh last February, at Harvard University.

The award winning Journalist, Lawyer and the Director and Executive Producer of the film then negotiated for Harvard University to order their students graduation scarfs from Bonwire, which has eventually created jobs for the Bonwire weavers through the Harvard Kennedy school graduation order.

The first batch of 37 Kente stolls is ready to be delivered to Harvard Kennedy School.

As a result of the successful transaction in the Harvard-Bonwire linkage, Howard University is also seeking to negotiate for its students to get authentic Kente for their graduating students through Amma Prempeh. The deal is yet to be formalised this week.

If the deal goes through, Bonwire weavers would be weaving for both Harvard & Howard University for every graduation.

The Bonwire Kente industry is about to soar from orders from both Harvard and Howard Universities for every graduation ceremony at reasonable prices.

At least, 19 people died in a Road Traffic Crash (RTC) along Oyo-Ogbomoso Road in Oyo State on Sunday, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said.

He said that the crash, which occurred at about 07:45 a.m. was due to route violation, referred to in local parlance as ‘One Way’.

He also said that the act was a traffic violation that resulted in a head-on collision and fire outbreak. According to him, the report revealed that the crash, which was caused by route violation, involved 20 people, all male adults.

Inflation increases to 33.20% in March

0
Inflation rate rises

Nigeria’s inflation rate rose to 33.20 per cent in March 2024 from 31.70 per cent in February 2024.

This was disclosed in the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, March Consumer Price Index and Inflation report.

The March 2024 headline inflation rate increased by 1.50 per cent compared to the February 2024 headline inflation rate.

On a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 11.16 per cent, higher than the 22.04 per cent recorded in March 2023.

This shows that the headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) increased in March 2024 compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., March 2023).

Furthermore, on a month-on-month basis, the headline inflation rate in March 2024 was 3.02 per cent, which was 0.10 per cent lower than the rate recorded in February 2024 (3.12 per cent).

The implication means that in March 2024, the rate of increase in the average price level is less than the rate of increase in the average price level in February 2024.

This is the eighth time the inflation rate is rising since the commencement of President Bola Tinubu’s administration on May 29, 2023.
