Israel reopens key Kerem Shalom border crossing for Gaza aid

Kerem Shalom border crossing

Israel says it is reopening the Kerem Shalom crossing with southern Gaza for aid deliveries, four days after it was closed because of Hamas rocket fire.

Lorries from Egypt with food, water and medicine have arrived at the crossing, according to the Israeli military.

The UN had expressed alarm on Tuesday over what it called Israel’s “choking off” of Gaza’s two main aid arteries.

It came after Israeli troops took full control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing with Egypt.

Overnight, there were fresh Israeli air strikes in the nearby city of Rafah, where the Israeli military says it began a limited operation on Monday. A senior US official also confirmed that a shipment of US weapons to Israel had been paused last week over concerns that Israeli forces were about to launch a major offensive on Rafah city.

The shipment included 2,000lb bombs, which could be devastating if used in such a densely populated place.

Seven months into its war with Hamas in Gaza, Israel has said that victory is impossible without taking Rafah.

US reveals it paused shipment of bombs for Israel over Rafah concerns

0
Israel has ordered civilians to evacuate Rafah ahead of its 'limited' military operation

The US last week paused a bomb shipment for Israel over concerns it was going ahead with a major ground operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, a senior US administration official said.

The shipment consisted of 1,800 2,000lb (907kg) bombs and 1,700 500lb bombs, the official told the BBC. Israel has not “fully addressed” US concerns over humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, the official said. An Israeli military official appeared to play down the US move. Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari told a news conference that the US had provided “unprecedented” security assistance since the beginning of the war, adding that disputes between the allies were resolved “behind closed doors in a matter-of-fact way”.

Overnight, there were further Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip, hours after Israeli forces backed by tanks took control of the Palestinians side of the key Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt.

The Israeli bombardment was particularly intense around Rafah. Local medics said seven members of one family were killed in one strike.

Rafah has been a key entry point for aid and the only exit for people able to flee since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas last October.

Mama Pat unites Asokwa to break the ‘8’

0

About five thousand members and sympathisers of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Sunday, May 5, 2024 hit the streets of Asokwa in a unity walk that brought together the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area and two others who contested her.

Madam Patricia Appiagyei, popularly known as Mama Pat, Francis Nana Yaw Boakye and Edmund Kyei competed in the NPP parliamentary primaries for Asokwa constituency held in January 2024, with the incumbent MP winning to represent the constituents on the ticket of the party for the fourth time in Parliament.

The unity walk, which was initiated by Mama Pat, now deputy majority leader of the Parliament of Ghana, was meant to build bridges and consolidate their gains, going into the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Supporters of all the three candidates were present in the exercise, which also saw some regional executives of the party participating.

The Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited, Albert Adu Boahen, who is revered in the Asokwa constituency, as their proud son, was also in attendance.

The walk, led by Mama Pat and joined by Edmund Kyei and Nana Yaw Boakye, took off from Dompoase Junction amidst drumming and dancing and ended at Millennium Plaza.

Majority of the party faithful were adorned in the NPP colours – red, blue and white – and displayed placards, some of which read: ‘Let us unite to break the 8’, ‘For free SHS to progress vote NPP’, ‘Dr. Bawumia for President’, ‘We are breaking the 8 with Mama Pat’ and ‘Bold solutions for our future’ among many others.

Some were also wearing branded T-shirts of Mama Pat with Dr. Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 presidential elections.

Addressing the party supporters, Mama Pat espoused the need for unity, urging the rank and file of the party at the constituency to forgive one another and come together to champion their collective interest – to retain power in the 2024 general elections.

“All of you gathered here today, there is one thing that I know. That the fight ahead of us is going to be very difficult.

“However, we can only defeat our political opponents when we work together. Today, I am very happy our son Edmund Kyei and Nana Yaw Boakye are here with us. They have demonstrated that we are more united than ever and ready for the task ahead of us”, she noted.

She added “Together, we are going to promote the vision of our flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the party to maximise enough votes to break the eight-year governance cycle. It is possible but we can only achieve that when we are united”.

Both Nana Yaw Boakye and Edmund Kyei stressed on party cohesion and urged all the party faithful to do away with internal bickering and rancor, assuring that with unity, they can overcome their adversaries.

9 Top Tips for Your Blood Pressure

0

You could have high blood pressure and not know it. Since it has no symptoms, it’s called a “silent killer.”

If you’re one of the millions of adults who need to manage their blood pressure, you can start today with these nine tips.

  1. Hold the french fries and other salty foods. Choose low-sodium and no-salt-added foods. Limit the amount of salt that you cook with. You shouldn’t eat more than a teaspoon of salt (which has 2,300 milligrams of sodium) per day if you’re healthy. Some people have an even smaller limit. For instance, people with heart disease should not get more than 1,500 milligrams per day. Ask your doctor what’s OK for you. Read labels on foods or menu items to see how much you get in a serving.
  2. Limit alcohol. Drink too much, and your numbers go up. Men should limit themselves to two alcoholic drinks a day, while women should stick to just one a day. (One drink is a single serving of wine, beer, or a small amount of hard liquor.)

  1. Get moving. It’s ideal to do heart-pumping aerobic exercise(like walkingjogging, or dancing) for 30 minutes a day. You can break that into three short bursts of just 10 minutes each. That’s enough to start to make a difference.
  2. Don’t clean your plate.Cut calories to help yourself lose weight. That’s good for your blood pressure. When you eat out, remember that many restaurants serve way too much food. Before you dig in, put some of it in a to-go box. It’s best to eat smaller meals at home, where you control portions and ingredients.
  3. Ditch tobacco. It’s not just about cigarettes. Any tobacco product can damage your blood vessels, making high blood pressure more likely. Work with your doctor to make a plan that can help you quit. Also look into support groups in your area.
  4. Upgrade your stressskills. If you drink, smoke, or overeat when you’re under the gun, that can make your blood pressure go up. Try yoga, deep breathing, or meditation and exercise instead. It’s also healthy to say “no” to requests that could make your life too hectic.
  5. Turn to friends and family. They’re on your side! Studies show that community and family support are a key part of any high blood pressure treatment plan. They can help you stick to your healthy eating and exercise goals. Positive, nurturing relationships curb stress, too.
  6. Keep up with your doctor’s advice.Chances are, your doctor recommended a lot of the things on this list. If they also gave you medicine to control your blood pressure, take it as recommended. If the instructions are confusing, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
  7. Ask your doctor if supplementswould help. Supplements won’t replace diet, exercise, and the other tips, but some could help your blood pressure. These include calciumpotassium, coenzyme Q10, and omega-3 fatty acids (from fish oil or krill oil). Check with your doctor before you start taking any new supplement, so that they can make sure it won’t affect any other condition you have or affect your medicines.

Feature: SML’s Impact On Ghana’s Revenue Mobilization

0
Mr Christian Sottie, Managing Director of SML

“Innovative public-private partnerships can help transform economies by bringing everyone into the digital economy”

Globally, it is recognized that well-crafted public-private partnerships (PPPs) do play pivotal rolesin helping transform economies. Evidently, by harnessing synergies between the public and private sectors, such innovative collaborations tend to unlock new frontiers of investment and expertise – crucial elements for driving efficiency, transparency, accountability and thus transformative change.

“When a PPP succeeds, everyone is a winner – the public entity, the private enterprise and the citizens at large”

Innovative collaboration between a public entity and private enterprises, in the revenue administration and mobilization space is not new to Ghana. Ghana Revenue Authority(GRA) is on record to have entered into strategic partnerships with many private entities such as GC-Net, ICUMS and others with the view to meet its set annual revenue target for the good people of Ghana.

It is in this same spirit that Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), a private firm has partnered with GRA to help optimize revenue mobilization in the critical downstream petroleum sector.

Through, deployment of revolutionary technologies and Al data-driven solutions, SML’s engagement with GRA can be seen as harnessing the miracles offered by PPPs in revenue mobilization space at marginal cost to Government without compromising on ensuring efficiency, transparency, and higher realizedtax revenue for Ghana.

‘We audit not to only find faults, but to guarantee accuracy and integrity of financial information”

The Downstream Petroleum Audit: A Watershed Moment

Before SML’s intervention, management of downstream petroleum operations data was mainly a manual fragmented painstaking process, plagued with inefficiencies and vulnerabilities due to limitations of man.

Reliance on stand-alone systems made it difficult to maintain and leverage data effectively, hampering GRA’s ability to accurately regulate, monitor, assess and tax petroleum products in both downstream and upstream petroleum sectors.

Digital  transformation is not. About technology – it’s about change emanating from failing fast in learning  fast to deal decisively with the realities of our time

To address this challenge, SML introduced an end-to-end Electronic Metering Management System (EMMS), a state-of-the-art solution that digitalized the measurement and reporting of petroleum product supplies. This transformative initiative ushered in a new era of precision, transparency, and revenue assurance for the nation.

SML’s Impact: Billions Unlocked and Efficiency Optimized “In the era of digitalization, data is the new oil that fosters transparency, trust and cultivates loyalty”

The results of SML’s partnership with GRA have been nothing short of remarkable. An independent audit by KPMG revealed an incremental volume of 1.7 billion litres and an incremental tax revenue of GHS 2.45 billion for the period under review. This substantial revenue boost represents a significant win for Ghana.

Moreover, KPMG’s assessment highlighted the qualitative benefits of SML’s intervention, including 24/7 electronic real-time monitoring of petroleum product outflows and partial monitoring of inflows at depots equipped with SML’s flowmeters. This round-the-clock surveillance serves as a powerful deterrent against under-declarations, safeguarding the nation’s revenue streams.

“Without knowing our records, it can be difficult to know what needs repairing, what needs reconciling and what needs paying for in taxes”

Equally impressive are the six levels of reconciliation undertaken by SML, meticulously cross-checking data to prevent revenue losses to the GRA. This rigorous process, coupled with the sharing of discrepancy reports for follow-up action, underscores SML’s commitment to fostering transparency and accountability within the sector. At the heart of SML’s success lies the transformative power of digitalization.

By replacing manual, error-prone processes with advanced digital solutions, the EMMS has revolutionized the way petroleum product supplies are measured, monitored, and reported.

“Our ability to collect, analyze, triangulate and visualize vast amounts of data in real time is something that sets us apart in helpingmobilize revenue in amazing ways in significant size  never before – Data speaks for us”

Real-time data streams provide unprecedented visibility into petroleum product flows, enabling precise tracking and thus taxing of such flows. This level of granular insight not only bolsters revenue collection but also enhances operational efficiency by streamlining administrative processes and enabling data-driven decision-making.

Moreover, the digital nature of SML’s solution promotes transparency and accountability, two critical pillars of good governance. and accurate assessment of taxes.

Comprehensive digital records and transparent data sharing foster public scrutiny and oversight, mitigating the risks of corruption, manipulation, and misappropriation that can plague traditional, opaque systems.

“Imagination encircles the world by creating avenues for knowledge sharing for humanity’s mutual benefits “

SML’s model has garnered significant international acclaim, with nations like Kenya among others actively seeking to emulate its successful approach. Governments across borders have reached out to learn from SML’s pioneering framework, underscoring the transformative potential that entrepreneurs can unleash when provided with an enabling environment and opportunities to pursue productive ventures.

This burgeoning global interest serves as a powerful endorsement of SML’s innovative methodology and its capacity to drive positive change in revenue mobilization and resource management.

As more countries explore replicating SML’s template, Ghana’s visionary embrace of public-private partnerships positions it as a torchbearer, illuminating a path towards sustainable economic development through synergistic collaborations that harness the entrepreneurial spirit.

SML’s Saga: A Catalyst for Broader Sector Reforms “Success is surely the sum of unseen hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what one does

While SML’s immediate impact has been felt in the downstream petroleum sector, the ripple effects of this pioneering PPP extend far beyond. By demonstrating the tangible benefits of leveraging private sector expertise and technology, SML’s engagement is a powerful catalyst for broader sectoral reform and the adoption of PPPs across Ghana’s revenue mobilization landscape.

“SML does not wait for opportunity, SML simply creates opportunities”

Based on the KMPG’s report, the government’s recognition of SML’s success in the downstream petroleum sector has prompted a comprehensive assessment of potential revenue leakages in the upstream petroleum and minerals sectors.

Informed by this experience, the President has directed a comprehensive technical needs assessment, value-for-money analysis, and stakeholder engagements to explore the implementation of similar PPP models in these critical industries.

This proactive approach underscores the government’s commitment to maximizing revenue streams and optimizing resource allocation through innovative partnerships.

By replicating the successes of the downstream petroleum audit, Ghana can unlock new avenues for economic growth, sustainable development, and improved service delivery for its citizens.

“Alone SML can do so little; together Ghana can do so much for our strength is in each individual member”

While civil society organizations (CSOs) and other institutions play crucial roles as “watchdogs” in ensuring accountability for government decisions and practices in nation building, it is equally imperative that Ghanaians also extend their support to native individuals and entities dedicated to safeguard the public purse.

Just as we rely on external oversight to promote transparency and good governance, we must also foster an environment that empowers homegrown initiatives and spur on entrepreneurial ventures for the good of Ghana.

In essence, while external oversight remains indispensable, it is our collective duty as people to champion and empower those among us who are committed to the noble cause of defying all odds in safeguarding the public purse.

By fostering a symbiotic relationship among government, civil society, and entrepreneurial initiatives, we can forge a path towards a more transparent, accountable, and prosperous future for all Ghanaians.

Long live Ghana, long live SML and together let’s build a nation that the next generation after us will feel proud to have and die for.

Today’s Europa & Conference LeagueSemi-finals matches

0
Bayer Leverkusen vs Roma

Unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen host Roma

With one foot in the Europa League final, unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen host Roma on Thursday evening, as they conclude their semi-final tie at the BayArena.

For the second season running these clubs are meeting in the semi-finals, but events in the first leg make the new German champions favourites to overturn last year’s result.

In addition to gaining revenge for losing to Roma at this stage 12 months ago, Leverkusen took a giant stride towards meeting either Marseille or Atalanta BC in the Europa League final by running out 2-0 winners at Stadio Olimpico. The Bundesliga winners are now only 90 minutes away from booking their place in Dublin later this month, and a historic treble remains very much on the cards for a team that simply refuses to be beaten.

Leverkusen have recently produced several late goals to keep their proud undefeated streak intact, but they easily extended that run to 48 games with a 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

Much-coveted coach Xabi Alonso has already confirmed he will stay in situ for another year at least, so everything is in place for the 1988 UEFA Cup winners and 2002 Champions League runners-up to make their first Europa League final appearance.

Roma’s away record is far from special, and Leverkusen are an immovable object, so an almighty upset is required to send the away side through.

Atalanta  welcome Olympique Marseille in Europa League

A place in the Europa League final will be at stake when Atalanta BC welcome Marseille to Bergamo on Thursday, with their semi-final tie finely poised after last week’s first leg.

The Serie A side are just one game away from their first European final, but OM are also intent on meeting either Roma or Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin.

Atalanta players

At the end of their first-ever meeting, Atalanta and Marseille could not be split at Stade Velodrome, as La Dea proved unable to retain a lead earned by Gianluca Scamacca‘s 11th-minute opener.

Having now extended their unbeaten away run in Europe to 11 matches – including last month’s superb 3-0 win at Anfield – Atalanta return to home turf, where they have won 11 of their last 14 matches.

While Atalanta are yet to make it all the way to a continental final, their opponents boast a rich tradition in that respect, having been crowned champions of Europe in 1993 and subsequently lost the 1999, 2004 and 2018 UEFA Cup/Europa League deciders.

Furthermore, Marseille have won each of their last three semi-final ties in UEFA’s second-tier tournament, but they must now try to improve on their recent away record in order to progress past La Dea.

Given their goalscoring options and impressive home form, Atalanta surely start favourites to progress past Marseille, who can be flaky away from home.

The French side certainly possess a genuine threat on the counter, but their hosts should have sufficient firepower to reach the Europa League final.

Aston Villa have a mountain to climb againstOlympiakos

Trailing 4-2 from the first leg, Aston Villa visit Olympiakos in the second leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final at the Karaiskakis Stadium at 8pm BST on Thursday, live on TNT Sports 1.

A hat-trick from Ayoub El Kaabi sank the hosts in Birmingham last Thursday and anything less than a two-goal victory will result in Villa’s elimination.

The odds are stacked against Aston Villa in Piraeus on Thursday with Unai Emery’s men needing to win by three goals or more to see off Olympiakos at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

Emiliano Martínez – Aston Villa Goalkeeper

Victory by two goals would take the match to extra-time and potentially penalties but even that could be a big ask for a Villa team who have been out of form.

The Villans have posted just one win in their last five matches in all competitions and risk finishing an impressive season on a sour note.

Olympiakos, meanwhile, are bidding to become only the second ever Greek club to reach the final of a major UEFA competition and will do so if they avoid defeat on their own patch.

Don’t Vote For Mahama … He will destroy my legacy – Akufo Addo

0
President Akufo-Addo addressing the workers, out growers and NPP sympathisers

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged Ghanaians to reject the perennial presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

According to the President, the NDC presidential candidate, if elected again, would destroy what his government had built since he (Mahama) does not appreciate his good works.

Therefore, the two-term president, Akufo-Addo, cannot relinquish the reigns to the man who was rejected after one term in office.

President Akufo-Addo said this on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Doboro, near Nsawam, when he toured Blue Skies Ghana, a fruit juice manufacturing company.

The President was addressing staff of the company, as well as outgrowers, who supply the raw materials for the juice and some NPP sympathisers who were in party t-shirts.

“Your vote is your power in Ghana. And when the time comes, the work is simple and not difficult. I cannot have the person I unseated, who does not appreciate what I have done, take over from me. He will destroy everything I have done,” he said in Twi.

President Akufo-Addo addressing the workers, out growers and NPP sympathisers

The President then announced to the gathering that he had absolute confidence in his vice, Dr. Bawumia, whom he had worked with for seven and a half years and that he could do the job.

He pleaded with Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Bawumia to succeed him, to build on the legacy his government had already achieved.

JABS

This is not the first time President Akufo-Addo has openly declared that Mahama should not be the one to succeed him.

President Akufo-Addo, while in Wa recently to commission the newly installed solar panels, said at the Wa Naa palace, that he had defeated John Mahama twice and insinuated that it was not right for him to come back.

OBSERVATION

Taking on the perennial presidential candidate of the NDC, John Mahama, by President Akufo-Addo, appears to be something the opposition party would have to deal with.

A trend is developing where President Akufo-Addo pokes his former direct political opponent at the least opportunity.

Should the trend continue, Akufo-Addo would become a distraction to John Mahama in his political campaigning. Mahama, on the other hand, would have the two to deal with.

CAMPAIGN

Meanwhile, the Vice President, who is the Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia, is on the ground campaigning.

He has already toured the Western and Western North Regions, and yesterday he was in the Ahafo region where he interacted with chiefs and people, visited some voter registration centres, and held a town hall meeting to connect with the youth.

REGISTRATION

President Akufo-Addo, who put aside his prepared speech, encouraged Ghanaians to take part in the exercise, arguing that their vote is their power.

“You know we are going to vote this year. And the registration has commenced. I urge all those who have not registered and are eligible to register to do so,” he said in the Akan language, throughout his brief address.

The Electoral Commission has commenced the limited voter registration exercise for first-time voters and individuals who do not have a voter card.

The exercise, which started on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, will take 21 days, ending on May 27, 2024. The EC has projected to register 623,000 new voters.

Touching on government’s efforts towards developing education, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the Free TVET program, which he is credited with contributing to notable development projects nationwide.

These projects include the construction of public libraries, sports facilities and other infrastructure essential for community development.

“For instance, Free Senior High (FSHS) has helped a lot of students. The total number of FSHS students increased from 800 to 1.4 million students.

Their performances are also better than before. The free TVET also contributed to significant development projects in the country with the building of public libraries and sports facilities among others,” he said.
