Leverkusen win first Bundesliga title with 5 games to spare

0
Bayer Leverkusen have gone 29 games unbeaten in the Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title and got there with five games to spare thanks to a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen. Bayern Munich beat Cologne on Saturday to keep Leverkusen’s title celebrations on hold for at least a day.

But there were scenes of jubilation for Xabi Alonso’s team when the final whistle blew at BayArena on Sunday. Victor Boniface’s 25th-minute penalty set Leverkusen on their way before Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz scored stunning goals in quick succession.

Supporters stormed on to the pitch in mid-match when star man Wirtz added a fourth in the 82nd minute, and again when he completed a hat-trick soon afterwards.

Leverkusen’s landmark achievement ends an era of dominance for Bayern, who had won the past 11 Bundesliga titles.

Unbeaten in all competitions this season, Leverkusen remain on course for a remarkable treble in Alonso’s first full season in charge, with the German Cup and Europa League still in their sights.

Liverpool title hopes hit by lose to Palace

0
Eberechi Eze scored the only goal of the game

Liverpool headed into last Sunday’s match at Old Trafford two points clear at the top of the league table and favourites to win the Europa League. A week on and both trophies appear to be slipping out of their grasp.

Palace started brightly and led through Eze’s well-worked opener, before a slip from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk gave Jean-Philippe Mateta a golden opportunity to double their lead.

The striker was clean through and lifted his effort past the returning Alisson Becker but Robertson sprinted back to hook the ball off the line.

Liverpool rallied and Wataru Endo struck the bar after Palace failed to deal with a corner before Dean Henderson made a fine reaction save to deny Luis Diaz.

Mateta did have another big chance to score the visitors’ second from a rare Palace attack but Alisson made a remarkable save from point-blank range.

Liverpool kept pushing for an equaliser but could not find a way through, with Mohamed Salah’s goalbound effort from inside the six-yard box blocked by Mitchell in stoppage time.

Late Villa goals dent Arsenal title challenge

Villa striker Ollie Watkins scores

Aston Villa produced an outstanding performance to stun Arsenal at Emirates Stadium and leave Manchester City in pole position in the Premier League title race. The game started with high anticipation for the Gunners after Liverpool’s shock home defeat by Crystal Palace but Arsenal were desperately disappointing and ended up well beaten as Villa boss Unai Emery made a winning return to his former club. Arsenal were fortunate to remain on level terms for so long against the impressive visitors.

The only surprise was that it took Villa until six minutes from the end to open the scoring – Ollie Watkins and Youri Tielemans hit the woodwork in each half before Leon Bailey finally broke the deadlock with a low finish at the far post.

Arsenal were kept out in the first half when Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez made a stunning save from Leandro Trossard but the visitors wrapped up the win when Watkins raced clear in the 87th minute to loft a composed finish over David Raya.

It completed a perfect weekend for reigning champions City, who are now two points clear at the top with Arsenal ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

I can’t support LGBTQ+ in Ghana -Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia joined Muslims in Kumasi to observe the 2024 Eid prayers

The flag bearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has broken his silence on the controversial homosexuality conversation, unswervingly opposing its practice.

According to the Vice President, the societal and cultural norms of Ghana and its religions abhor the practice of homosexuality, and he personally cannot support it.

He said this on Thursday, April 11, 2024, while addressing some Muslim congregations during the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the Kumasi Central Mosque in the Ashanti Region.

The NPP Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia, did not mince words on his stance on homosexuality, saying that such practices would not be tolerated under his tenure as President of Ghana.

“First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality,” Dr. Bawumia said.

He continued that “Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality. No ifs or buts. No shades of grey,” he posited.

“Therefore, I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana, clearly and unequivocably forbid. All the major religious traditions in Ghana (Christianity and Islam) are opposed to this practice, and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah,” he added.

CAMPAIGN

The issue of legalising or otherwise of the practice of homosexuality in Ghana has gained stamina in the electioneering campaign.

Political parties and their flag bearers are under intense pressure from citizens to emphatically take a position on the subject without sitting on the fence.

The mood of the nation is that the majority of Ghanaians will not hesitate to punish any political party and its candidate with their thumbs at the polls should they fail to come clear on the issue of homosexuality or support its practice in Ghana.

On various platforms, presidential candidate aspirants have overtly or covertly made pronouncements on their stance on the controversial subject, with none dissenting from the position of the entirety of the nation.

PASSAGE OF BILL

Parliament in February this year passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-gay bill.

According to the bill, anyone who engages in and promotes homosexual activities in Ghana will face three years’ minimum jail term and five years’ maximum incarceration.

ASSENT

The bill, which was sponsored by private members from both the minority and majority groups in Parliament, is yet to be signed into law by President Akufo-Addo.

The President has communicated his difficulty in assenting the bill, following a challenge at the Supreme Court against the legality of the bill.

The Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, wrote to the Clerk to Parliament on March 18 to cease and desist from transmitting the bill to the presidency for the assent of the president.

Nana Assante Bediatuo would rather the Clerk to Parliament, Cyril Nsiah, wait till the determination of the matter in court.

Last Wednesday, April 10, Mr. Nsiah, in a response, expressed his intention to transmit the bill in accordance with Article 106(7) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, but he acknowledged the content of the letter for him to cease transmitting the bill until the court resolved the matter.

“Accordingly, I await an indication in writing from your Office on when to present the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024, to His Excellency the President for his consideration, pursuant to Article 106(7) of the Constitution, 1992.”

EXPEDITED

Meanwhile, an Accra High Court has granted an application for the abridgement of time for the hearing of the case seeking to compel President Akufo-Addo to receive the anti-LGBTQ+ bill from parliament.

This case, filed by NDC MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, is demanding several declarations over the President’s refusal to receive the bill from Parliament.

Choose female running mate from A/R – Traders Association to Bawumia

Madam Nkrumah Adasa – Tepa Traders Association

Representatives of 26 women traders’s association across Ashanti region yesterday converged in Kumasi to agitate for the selection of a female running mate to pair Dr. Bawumia for NPP’s presidential ticket in the 2024 elections.

The leadership of the groups said the membership would support and vote massively for the party if a female from the Ashanti region is chosen to champion their interest in the presidency.

According to the women, the female population of Ghana as at 2023 constitute about 17.1 million persons and therefore it would be appropriate that Dr. Bawumia considers choosing a female running mate to enable the party to attract more votes by women.

Madam Nkrumah Adasa, a leader of the Tepa Traders  Association said besides the Ashanti region being the stronghold of the party, women constitute a fairly bigger constituency in the region and need a strong woman at the presidency to champion interest of women.

Madam Kaakyire  Badu from the  Bantama  Race  course  market said it  was incumbent on the NPP  to choose  a  woman  from the  Ashanti region  as the running to match  the NDC  that has  strategically selected a woman  to attract the support of  various women’s  grouping across the  country.

She cautioned against previous mistakes of imposing candidates on the party at the expense of aspirations of women that affected the support base of the party.

The women  traders  emphasised that a woman running mate from the region would go a long way to influence voting  at the elections in December 2024.

They said the running mate must not just be a woman but a tested, affable and proven compassionate woman that has the welfare of women and children and youth development at heart.

According to the traders, male Veeps had disappointed the women folk previously hence the need for a paradigm  shift  and  consider one of their own who possess the requisite leadership qualities to fairly  represent them in government.

They also called for more women to get involved in politics to champion women emancipation as a way of improving the lot of women generally.

Rev. Owusu Bempah to Veep: Naa Torshie is the right candidate

0
Naa Torshie Addo, Administrator of DACF

The founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has said that if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is considering selecting a female running mate, then he recommends Irene Naa Torshie Addo, the Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund.

According to him, she is one of the people who can help the party break the eight-year cycle in the next election.

He said that although Irene Naa Torshie Addo has not informed him of any intention to be the running mate of the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, he can vouch for her any day as the best person for the role.

In an interview with Ade Akye Abia on Okay FM, Owusu-Bempah said in Twi, “If Dr Bawumia wants a lady as his running mate, then he has taken too long; he should have mentioned Naa Torshie’s name long ago because that woman, all clergymen in this country respect and honour her dearly.

“I won’t campaign for her because she has not discussed anything like that or that she is interested, but my truth is that if Dr Bawumia wants a female running mate, if they will listen to me, then Naa Torshie is the person who can make the grounds soft for him to win.”

He added that, despite all the issues and mistreatment he received from the NPP following their attainment of political power, Naa Torshie was one of the people who calmed his nerves and helped him resolve his issues with the party.

“If there is anybody that Vice President Dr Bawumia should thank, then it is Naa Torshie (Irene Naa Torshie Addo). She calmed my nerves. She could come to my place, and we could chat, and she reassured me. God bless her,” he added.

His comments come on the back of two female names that have emerged as potential running mates for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP: Irene Naa Torshie Addo and Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the Chief of Staff.

KON launches Gov’t Performance Tracker*

0
In a move heralded as a significant step towards fostering transparency and accountability, government today launched the much-anticipated Performance Tracker.
The platform, unveiled at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) by the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, aims to bridge the gap between public perception and the reality of infrastructure development projects across the nation.
Speaking at the official launch, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, emphasized the importance of the Performance Tracker in showcasing the government’s commitment to effective governance.
“The performance tracker is a database that showcases the performances of the government of Ghana and it is going to show you the various projects that have been executed across the country,” Minister Oppong

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Nkrumah stated.

With over 13,000 projects currently hosted on the platform, spanning across 267 districts and 28 ministries, the Performance Tracker serves as a reliable mechanism for monitoring the progress and impact of infrastructure initiatives. Minister Oppong Nkrumah highlighted its comprehensive nature, encompassing a wide array of projects, including infrastructure and service delivery initiatives validated across all sixteen regions of the country.
“This database has two interfaces; a website and an application. Today the mobile phone is very powerful too and sometimes even beyond what your desktop can do,” Minister Oppong Nkrumah added, underlining the accessibility and user-friendly features of the Performance Tracker.
The Minister further noted that the Performance Tracker represents an upgraded version of the previously introduced Delivery Tracker by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2020. “As of June 2023, there are over 13,000 projects across the 261 districts, across the 16 regions, across the 28 ministries that have been validated and updated on this platform,” he elaborated.
He emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to continuously update the Performance Tracker, with various ministries and agencies contributing data beyond the June 2023 timeframe.

On her part, Minister for Information-designate, Fatimatu Abubakar recalled how data sourcing on government projects across Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in all 16 regions was difficult. She said with the coming into force of the Performance Tracker, sourcing data on government projects is made easy. She encouraged Ghanaians to make use of the tracker in order to participate in the governance process.
Presenting the work that went into the development of the tracker, Prof. Appiah-Adu underscored the rigorous validation process that we t into developing the platform, including geo-tagging and photographing projects to ensure transparency.
He said the tracker will help the government and the governed be on the same page with regards to projects that are being undertaken by government and they in turn to benefit.

Ghana is important than our egos and ambitions -Akufo-Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged Ghanaians to not ruin people’s reputations in the name of politics.

According to the President, actions that promote disunity, especially in an election year, would undermine the cohesion of the nation.

“Let us remember that this country is more important than our egos and ambitions,” he said on Thursday, April 11, 2024, when he joined the National Chief Imam and the Muslim community for the Eid-al-Fitr celebration at the Black Star Square, Accra.

“We should be careful about the spread of misinformation and disinformation, especially such misinformation and disinformation that destroys the hard-earned reputation of people,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo used his remarks to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence among religions in the country as the election approaches.

He called on Ghanaians to reject all forms of divisiveness that threaten the country’s unity and cohesion.

“I make this point, particularly because we are in an election year and there is the tendency for self-seeking people to exploit our differences of religion and ethnicity to foment divisions to promote narrow, parochial, sectarian, and political agenda,” he remarked.

PROPAGANDA

He urged Ghanaians to avoid disinformation and manipulative propaganda that could undermine the country’s democracy, rule of law, and fundamental rights.

President Akufo-Addo stated that the age of technology and news media, which also provided people with a high degree of anonymity, provided a space for the peddling of half-truths and blatant lies to form perceptions.

RAMADAN

Eid-al-Fitr marks the end of the month-long fast in the Islamic month of Ramadan.

The President told the gathering that the significance of Ramadan was not lost on the average Muslim since it sought to inculcate the spirit of sacrifice, brotherhood, commitment to ethical living, love of family and nation, and God-consciousness.

He urged Muslims not to abandon these values after the passage of Ramadan, adding that indeed the purpose of Ramadan is to instill these values in Muslims and for them to keep them all their lives.

He continued that, “These are the exact same values every nation needs to develop. No Muslim has been unable to fast in this month of Ramadan because they do not have what it takes to either eat the dawn meal or break their fast during Iftar, thanks to the time-tested practice of communal sharing of the feast at dawn and in the evenings.

TOGETHER

He told them to make the spirit of togetherness a national value that would give true meaning to the principle of one nation, one destiny.

President Akufo-Addo reminded the gathering that Ghana remained the envy of the world due to the religious unity it created and the practice of various religions in a circular state that promotes religious freedom.

He urged them to continue to promote religious harmony and co-existence because “it is the essence of Islam, which means submission to the essence of Allah.”

CILT discusses cost of doing business at the port

0

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, CILT Ghana, has organised a business forum to discuss the cost of doing business in Ghana’s ports as well as its implication on import and export trade.

The forum had participation from key stakeholders like Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Shipping Lines, Ghana’s Shippers Authority, and some logistics firms.

The General Manager for Corporate Planning at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Khalid Nuhu said the Port Authority regulates charging system at the port in a balanced manner by ensuring that private entities don’t overcharge and importers also don’t underpay for services rendered to them.

“Everyone that has been licensed or has a concession with GPHA, operates under the tariffs set by GPHA. So if you aggregate the total tariffs of GPHA, in relation to what has been identified as a component of cost of doing business, on a scale of 1 to 100, GPHA is less than 10%,” he revealed.

He said GPHA has invested a lot in infrastructure at the port to be able to serve the port community in an efficient manner. He said the elimination of inefficiencies, delays and bureaucracies will go a long way to reduce the cost of doing at the ports.

“In GPHA, we try as much as possible to ensure that we are efficient because apart from the direct costs that we see impacting businesses and which we try to control to ensure that our port users are competitive, the indirect ones are what we have to try to eliminate like inefficiencies, bureaucracies and delays that are implicit in the cost of doing business. Normally, we don’t talk about that, but for me those are issues that need to be identified and dealt with so that as much as possible we control the cost of doing business through our ports”.

An Executive Member of the Ship Owners and Agents Association of Ghana, Adam Ayarna Imoro, said the charges of the shipping lines are to recoup the cost they incur in order for them to stay in business.

“That idea that people say shipping lines are a rip-off, they are making the cost of doing business in Ghana ports very high, the next thing you will see in the newspapers is that, the port is very expensive that is why they are losing cargos to Lomé. But both are not true. I checked with all the shipping lines here to know if they are losing containers and they told me it is not true. Cargo meant for Ghana comes to Ghana,” he clarified.

The Head of Shipper Services and Trade Facilitation at the Ghana Shippers Authority, Monica Josiah revealed some statistics on handling charges by some ports in the West African subregion.

“When you look at the port, government taxes take a greater chunk of the cost. For instance, in Tema, on some selected commodities we had 91.7% as government taxes, then in Abidjan, 92.1%, in Lomé 89.2%. For handling charges, that is receipts and delivery charges by GPHA, it was just 2.5% in Tema, then 2.6% in Abidjan and Lomé is about 2.4%,” she said.
