Lightning strike in Czech Republic injures 18 people

Dozens of emergency personnel were deployed to the scene in the Liberec region

Eighteen people were injured in the Czech Republic after a tree they were sheltering under was struck by lightning, local emergency services said. The strike happened on Sunday afternoon in the Liberec-Vratislavice castle park, located in the northern Liberec region about 55 miles (90km) north-east of the capital Prague.

Photos and videos shared by the fire service show dozens of emergency personnel and vehicles at the scene. Officials have not provided details of those who were injured, but local media reported that children were among those taken to hospital and that the park was hosting an event to mark International Children’s Day.

Czech TV station CT 24 reported that five of the injured were children aged between two and 16, and that five adults were resuscitated at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Liberec regional hospital, Vaclav Ricar, told local newspaper Liberecky Denik that it had received 17 patients who were all conscious.

He also confirmed that one child was airlifted to a hospital in Prague.

The Czech Republic was hit by heavy rain and storms over the weekend, and there were also reports of flooding affecting parts of the country.

Many factors contribute to flooding, but a warming atmosphere caused by climate change makes extreme rainfall more likely.

The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

If you are caught outside in a thunderstorm, experts advise you to find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles.

Heat kills more than 50 people in India in three days

76-year-old patient with heat exhaustion in Gujarat state

More than 50 people have died in India over the past three days as a brutal heat spell continues to grip parts of the country.

Around 33 people died in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh over the weekend due to the heat.

These included people involved in the general election, including polling officials, security guards and sanitation staff – Saturday was the last phase of voting.

In Odisha (Orissa) state, about 20 people died due to heat stroke, officials said.

Every five years, India holds its general election in the summer months of April and May.

But this year, the temperatures have been record-breaking, with the country experiencing frequent, more intense and longer heatwaves.

The federal health ministry says that there have been at least 56 confirmed heat strokes deaths from 1 March to 30 May. About 24,849 heatstroke cases were reported during the period.

However, state-wise figures suggest the actual number could be much higher.

In Odisha, district authorities reported 99 suspected heat stroke deaths in the past 72 hours – of these, 20 cases have been confirmed, the state’s Special Relief Commissioner said in a statement.

In Uttar Pradesh, Navdeep Rinwa, chief electoral officer of the state, told reporters that the families of deceased election personnel would be given a monetary compensation of 1.5m rupees ($18,000; £14,000).

Mr Rinwa said that a man who was standing in the queue to vote fainted because of the heat.

Suspected heat-related deaths have also been reported from the states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.

The heat in northern and central India and parts of the west has been unrelenting for the past two weeks, with maximum temperatures hovering around 45-46C for days at a stretch and even climbing up to 50C in some areas.

China accuse UK intelligence agency of recruiting Chinese couple as spies

China accuse UK

China has accused the UK’s intelligence agency of recruiting a couple as spies – the latest in a string of tit-for-tat allegations between Beijing and the West in recent months.

According to the Ministry of State Security, the two Chinese government employees were successfully recruited after MI6 operatives exploited the man’s “strong desire for money”.

The man, named as Wang, then convinced his partner, named only as Zhou, to join him as a British spy, the ministry said.

The accusations come weeks after the UK charged two men with spying for China.

The men were accused of giving “articles, notes, documents or information” to a foreign state, while China has called the allegations “malicious slander”.

Earlier this month, a former Royal Marine charged with assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service was found dead in the UK, police there said.

China did not reveal how it uncovered the case involving Mr Wang and Ms Zhou, saying only that it came after a “thorough investigation”.

The case is still under investigation and Chinese officials did not say if the couple would be charged.

The BBC sought a response from the UK government, which said it would neither confirm nor deny claims relating to intelligence matters.

China’s Ministry of State Security alleged that MI6 started cultivating Mr Wang when he was studying in the UK under a Sino-British exchange programme in 2015.

The operatives took “special care” of him in the UK, such as inviting him to dinners and tours to better “understand his interests and weaknesses”, the ministry alleged.

Mexico elects Claudia Sheinbaum as first woman president

Claudia Sheinbaum will be Mexico's first ever female president

Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as Mexico’s first woman president in an historic landslide win.

Mexico’s official electoral authority said preliminary results showed the 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City winning between 58% and 60% of the vote in Sunday’s election.

That gives her a lead of about 30 percentage points over her main rival, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez.

Ms Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on 1 October. Ms Sheinbaum, a former energy scientist, has promised continuity, saying that she will continue to build on the “advances” made by Mr López Obrador, further building on the welfare programmes which have made the outgoing president very popular.

But in her victory speech she also highlighted what has set this Mexican election apart from previous ones. She told cheering voters: “For the first time in the 200 years of the [Mexican] Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico.”

She said it was an achievement not just for her but for all women.

Ms Sheinbaum also thanked her rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, who has conceded victory.

Prior to running for president, Ms Sheinbaum was mayor of Mexico City, one of the most influential political positions in the country and one that is seen as paving the way for the presidency.

Ms Sheinbaum, whose Jewish maternal grandparents immigrated to Mexico from Bulgaria fleeing the Nazis, had an illustrious career as a scientist before delving into politics. Her paternal grandparents hailed from Lithuania.

Get a helmet that fits. Helmets are an important part of cycling safety. Try on some helmets to find the right fit for you. It should sit level on your head and be snug. The snap should be tight enough to fit two fingers between your chin and the strap. The buckle should be centered under your chin.

Find the right riding gear. It’s a good idea to find the right light exercise clothes for summer so you don’t overheat and warm enough clothing for cooler weather. Make sure your gear is reflective. You will need a light for the front of your bike and some reflectors so cars can see you. Wearing a backpack to hold your water and belongings will keep your hands free.

Get familiar with road rules. Ride on the road instead of sidewalks and in the same direction as cars. Learn about how to signal to turn. It’s a good idea to practice riding on a path or at a park before you head out onto the road.

Safety Concerns of Cycling After 50

When you’re ready to start cycling, aim for 150 minutes a week for exercise. To keep safe, make sure to:

  • Warm up and cool down with stretches
  • Drink lots of water
  • Pay attention to the cars and people around you
  • Don’t listen to music while you cycle

Cycling can be an excellent exercise to keep you healthy as you get older. Call 911 for any chest pain or pressure. If you have any concerns, make sure to check with your doctor before you start.

Medvedev becomes highest seed to fall at French Open

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev became the highest seed to fall in the French Open singles after losing to Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the men’s fourth round.

Russian fifth seed Medvedev, 28, was beaten 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-3 at Roland Garros.

Medvedev needed treatment for blisters on his feet in the second set and lost nine of the next 10 games when he returned from a medical timeout.

The former world number one, who has never gone past the French Open quarter-finals, improved in the fourth set after going off court again.

But a poor backhand into the net handed over a break point at 3-3, which De Minaur took spectacularly with an inside-out forehand winner that kissed the line.

De Minaur used his speed around the court superbly to keep points alive throughout and drew mistakes out his frustrated opponent.

With Medvedev chuntering to his team, De Minaur stayed composed to hold to love and move a game away from victory.

Medvedev mis-hit a forehand long behind the baseline at 30-30 5-3 and a double fault from the 2021 US Open champion on match point was a sorry way to finish.

De Minaur is the first Australian man to reach the Roland Garros quarter-finals since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.

Having never previously gone beyond the second round in Paris, De Minaur screamed “I love the clay! I love it here!” as he celebrated.
