Our education system requires a paradigm shift -Cape Vars Don

0
Dr Patrick Essien

A lecturer at the department of Physics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Patrick Essien, says the world is rapidly evolving where solutions to multifaceted challenges demand innovation and critical thinking.

In view of this, he said, there must be deliberate efforts to ensure that the educational landscape would be streamlined to become the beacon that would guide and shape the country towards a brighter future.

This, he explained, has become necessary due to the fact that the traditional approach to education, where students arguably concentrated largely on how to memorise facts did not suffice any longer, as far as modern drifts were concerned.

Dr Essien has, therefore, called for a paradigm shift that would overhaul the current “chew and pour” educational system and equip students to be able to evaluate, be more analytical and be creative as well.

The Physics lecturer made this known when he delivered an inspiring speech during the grand finale of the 2024 edition of the Maths and Science Quiz competition organised by the Boys and Girls Club of Ghana, Anomabo, in partnership with WFYC.

Speaking on the theme: “Promoting Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills At The Basic Schools; The Role Of Stem Education”, Dr Essien called for education system that would champion critical thinking and problem-solving skills through the lens of STEM education.

He noted that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education were at the heart in the country’s quest to produce future leaders who would be critical, analytical and be able to do proper evaluation of variables.

He said STEM “was not merely a collection of subjects; it is a mind-set, a way of approaching the world with curiosity, inquiry, and a commitment to problem-solving.It empowers students to ask questions, to experiment, to fail and try again, fostering resilience and adaptability – the very traits needed to thrive in an ever-changing landscape”.

He added that STEM education was responsible for the cultivation of critical thinking skills, which encourages students to question, challenge assumptions and seek evidence. These skills, he added, were not only indispensable in the realm of academia, but in all facets of life, as it enabled students to cultivate a spirit of innovation and creativity.

STEM education, he said, demanded a curriculum that was dynamic, inclusive and reflective of real-world contexts and necessitated a cultural shift that would celebrate curiosity and embraced failure as a stepping stone to success.

To realise this, he called on stakeholders to heavily invest in infrastructure, resources and professional development for educators and also allocate resources and support initiatives that would foster its growth.

He, therefore, called for the integration of STEM principles into the country’s education curriculum so as to nurture a generation of thinkers, creators and problem-solvers poised to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

On her part, the Community Development and Livelihood Officer of Atlantic Lithium Company Ltd, Miss Berikisu Aba Limann, advised the pupils to be resilient in the quest to attain higher education.

This, she explained, was the surest way they could realise their full potential in the near future and further encouraged the pupils, especially the “Girl Child” to develop interest in the science subjects.

Yamoransa Mt. Zion Methodist Junior High School emerged victorious, having demonstrated exceptional understanding of the subject matter and showcased same.

The school received a cash prize of GHȻ700.00 and a prestigious trophy for their splendid performance.

The Anomabo Methodist ‘A’ JHS, which placed second, received at amount of GHȻ600.00 while the Abonko M/A JHS received GHȻ500.00 after placing third.

The Manhyia Palace Museum, Kumasi announces its reopening on 1st May 2024, as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene (Asante King). Hosted by the
Asantehene, the museum will unveil refurbished facilities and historic Ashanti heirlooms to the
public in its new Homecoming exhibition.
This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in the Ashanti Kingdom’s cultural
heritage. British institutions, in a landmark agreement, have sent 32 royal treasures plundered from the Asante Kingdom 150 years ago. The works, featuring 15 items from the British
Museum and 17 from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), are now at the Manhyia Palace Museum on a three-year loan.
The Fowler Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles repatriated seven artefacts in February 2024. Homecoming commemorates these initiatives under Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s leadership.
Looted by British military forces from the Asantehene’s court during the 19th century Anglo-Ashanti Wars, Homecoming exhibits the relics in their homeland for the first time in 150years. They include the sword of state known as Mpomponsuo and the gold badges of officials authorized to purify the king’s soul. The collection also features a gold lute-harp presented by Asantehene Osei Bonsu to British diplomat Thomas Edward Bowdich during an 1817 trade
treaty. Each offers visitors a rare glimpse into the splendour of Ashanti history and culture.
Ivor Agyeman-Duah, Manhyia Palace Museum’s Director and chief negotiator for the
Asantehene, described the impact of the agreements. “These partnerships go beyond the
Ashanti Kingdom,” he explained, referencing ongoing international movements to repatriate
cultural artefacts to their rightful origins. “50 years since Asantehene Otumfuo Opoku Ware II first requested the return of the items from the British Museum in 1974, Homecoming renews our connections to Britain and the United States, in the spirit of progress and cooperation.”
The Fowler Museum personally returned the treasures to the Asantehene on 8th February.
They include a royal stool ornament from Asantehene Kofi Karikari’s private collection, who ruled
during Kumasi’s sacking.
Agyeman-Duah continued: “Although the British Museum’s laws forbid the permanent removal of objects, thanks to the mutually beneficial cooperation between Otumfuos Opoku-Ware II and Osei Tutu II, and the British Museum and V&A, items removed 150 years ago are home from three museums. We now look forward to more dialogues and stronger relationships with all
custodians of Ashanti treasures.”
Opened by Otumfuo Opoku Ware II during his Silver Jubilee in 1995, the museum was originally the first Manhyia Palace, built by the British for Asantehene Nana Prempeh I in 1925 to replace
the royal palace they destroyed during the Yaa Asantewaa War in 1900. Nana Prempeh I
accepted it only after paying its costs in full.
Visitors can explore expanded spaces and see photographic and regalia displays, lifelike
mannequins of the 20th and 21st-century Asantehenes and Asantehemaas (queen mothers),and captivating narratives chronicling the legacy of the Ashanti kingdom, including its history with the British Empire.
More details of the opening ceremony and Homecoming exhibition will be announced soon.

R Kelly’s appeal against 20-year sentence quashed by Judge

Singer R Kelly sentenced to 30 years in prison

A federal appeals court has upheld R. Kelly’s 20-year prison sentence in Chicago for federal sex crimes.

The 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has ruled against R. Kelly’s legal team’s arguments that his indictment on child enticement and child pornography charges were filed after the statute of limitations lapsed.

His legal team was seeking a new sentencing hearing in appeals court after they claimed the 20-year sentence was “unduly harsh.”

In a report by CBS News, Judge Amy St. Eve in a unanimous ruling wrote “For years, Robert Sylvester Kelly abused underage girls.”

By employing a complex scheme to keep victims quiet, he long evaded consequences. In recent years, though, those crimes finally caught up with him. But Kelly – interposing a statute-of-limitations defence – thinks he delayed the charges long enough to elude them entirely,” he continued.

The statute says otherwise, so we affirm his conviction. … An even-handed jury found Kelly guilty, acquitting him on several charges even after viewing those abhorrent tapes. No statute of limitations saves him, and the resulting sentence was procedurally proper and – especially under these appalling circumstances – substantively fair,” the judge concluded.

  1. Kelly was convicted of six counts of child pornography and child enticement by a Chicago federal jury in September 2022.

He was acquitted of seven other charges but was found guilty for videos of him sexually abusing three children, including his then 14-year-old goddaughter. In February 2023, he was sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

The sentencing came just over half a year after he was sentenced to 30 years in prison following his 2021 conviction by a federal jury for child sex crimes and racketeering in New York. He is serving the sentences concurrently but is currently appealing the New York conviction.

The upholding of the charges and sentence against R. Kelly comes the same week as disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein’s rape conviction in New York was overturned.

In February 2020, he was found guilty and sentenced to 23 years in prison. He was charged a further 16 years, to be served separately, in Los Angeles in 2022. His sentence in California remains unaffected by the decision in New York.

Gyedu Blay Ambolley and Shatta Wale

Reacting to a recent attack of Stonebwoy’s disability by Shatta Wale, legendary Ghanaian musician, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley told the latter that it was high time he grew and stopped attacking the personalities of others using their physical disabilities.

The “Adwoa Amissah” hitmaker admitted that at their time there were beefs in the industry, but, the current ones that are happening in Ghana are not the best.

He went on to urge Shatta Wale to be matured in his utterances when issues come up between himself and his colleagues because some of the things he says might not present him in a good light.

Quite recently, Shatta Wale decided to take another swipe at Stonebwoy after the Salahfest concert held on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

Earlier reports suggested that both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were billed to perform.

However, it later emerged that Stonebwoy declined to appear on the show because he allegedly did not want to have another unpleasant encounter with Shatta Wale taking into account his recent rants on social media.

Stowaway cat accidentally mailed to California in returned package

Stowaway cat

A family in the US has been reunited with their pet cat after she was accidentally mailed hundreds of miles to California with a package return. Galeana disappeared from her home in Utah earlier this month – prompting widespread searches for the beloved missing moggie.

She was rescued by an Amazon worker nearly a week after jumping into one of the family’s packages undetected.

The cat was in good health despite having had no food or water for days.

“Galeana loves boxes, it’s just part of her personality,” Carrie Clark, the cat’s owner, told NBC’s Utah affiliate KSL TV when explaining how her family’s pet had come to end up so far from home.

The cat was eventually rescued from the large box, which also contained pairs of steel-toed work boots, by an Amazon worker who took her to the vet.

There, the cat’s microchip was scanned and Ms Clark’s contact details appeared. The vet then called to explain what had happened. Ms Clark described it as the “most amazing, insane news in the entire world”.

“I didn’t believe her [the vet] at first and thought it was a prank,” she added.

Kenya ordered the military to help with rescue operations

More than 40 people have died in Kenya after a dam burst following heavy rains and flooding, officials have said. People in villages near Mai Mahiu, about 60km (37 miles) from the capital, Nairobi, were swept away as they slept.

“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud,” Nakuru county governor Susan Kihika told AFP news agency.

More than 100 people have been killed in floods that have devastated parts of Kenya in the last month.

Rescue teams are digging through the mud in search of survivors in several villages, including Kamuchiri and Kianugu in Nakuru county.

Of the 42 bodies recovered so far, 17 were of children, police commander Stephen Kirui said, cited by Reuters news agency. The government has delayed the opening of schools across Kenya with more rain expected to come, according to forecasters.

More than 130,000 people have been displaced by the floods, with many people taking shelter in schools. Heavy rains have also pounded neighbouring Tanzania and Burundi.

At least 155 people have been killed in Tanzania since January.

Togo heads to polls amid claims of power grab by President Gnassingbé

President Gnassingbé

Campaigning was rushed on the back of parliament’s approval of constitutional reforms that would allow lawmakers to elect the president instead of a direct vote by the people.

The move transformed Togo, one of the world’s poorest countries, from a presidential system to a parliamentary one.

It establishes new prime minister-style position called President of the council of ministers, to be held by the leader of the biggest party. Opposition parties denounced the reform as a ploy by Gnassingbé and his ruling Union for the Republic party – which has a majority in the 91-seat National Assembly – to get around presidential term limits.

The 57-year-old leader will likely assume the new position when his term expires next year.
