Actor Bernard Hill, best known for roles in Titanic and Lord of the Rings, has died aged 79.

He played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film and King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings.

His breakout role was in BBC TV drama Boys from the Blackstuff, where he portrayed Yosser Hughes, a character who struggled – and often failed – to cope with unemployment in Liverpool.

He died early on Sunday morning, his agent Lou Coulson confirmed.

A statement from his family is expected soon.

Hill was due to return to TV screens in series two of The Responder, a BBC drama starring Martin Freeman, which begins airing on Sunday.

In Boys from the Blackstuff, Hill drew praise for his gritty portrayal of Yosser Hughes, an intense and memorable character.

India calls Canada arrests over Sikh activist murder ‘political compulsion’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Canada’s investigation into alleged Indian involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist in Vancouver last year is a “political compulsion”, India’s foreign minister has said after three Indian citizens were arrested over the killing.

Canadian police on Friday arrested the trio for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, saying they were investigating their links to the Indian government, “if any”. He migrated to Canada in 1997 and acquired citizenship 18 years later.

He was wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder, the allegations he had denied. On June 18, 2023, he was shot dead by masked assailants in the car park of the Sikh temple he led in suburban Vancouver.

Nijjar’s killing sent diplomatic relations between Ottawa and New Delhi into a tailspin last year after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were “credible allegations” linking Indian intelligence to the crime. India rejected the allegations as “absurd”, temporarily halting the processing of visas and forcing Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country significantly.

Turkey halts trade with Israel over ‘humanitarian tragedy’ in Gaza

Turkish President Erdogan and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu

Turkey has suspended all trade with Israel over its offensive in Gaza, citing the “worsening humanitarian tragedy” in the strip. The Turkish trade ministry said the measures would be in place until Israel allowed an “uninterrupted and sufficient flow” of aid into Gaza.

Trade between the two countries was worth almost $7bn (£5.6bn) last year.

Israel’s foreign minister accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of acting like a “dictator”.

Israel Katz said on X that Mr Erdogan was “disregarding the interests of the Turkish people and businessmen and ignoring international trade agreements”. He added that he had instructed the foreign ministry to find alternatives for trade with Turkey, with a focus on local production and imports from other countries.

The ministry also says it will also take action to reduce economic connections between Turkey and the Palestinian Authority and Gaza, the BBC understands.

Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat criticised Israel’s “uncompromising attitude” towards a ceasefire, as well as the humanitarian situation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

In 1949, Turkey was the first Muslim-majority country to recognise Israel. But relations have worsened in recent decades.

Al Jazeera to be shut down in Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Al Jazeera is to be shut down in Israel. Mr Netanyahu accused the Qatari-owned network of “incitement” and said the cabinet decision had been unanimous.

Al Jazeera condemned the move as “criminal”.

Foreign journalists are banned from entering Gaza and Al Jazeera staff there have been some of the only reporters on the ground.

For years, Israeli officials have accused the network of anti-Israeli bias.

But their criticisms of the broadcaster have intensified since the Hamas attacks on 7 October, in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were taken hostage. 128 of those hostages are still unaccounted for – and among them, at least 34 are presumed dead.

At least 34,683 Palestinians have been killed and 78,018 injured in Gaza since 7 October, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Authorities say Al Jazeera has close links with Hamas, which the network vehemently denies.

China’s Xi arrives in France for state visit

Macron and Xi

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday arrived in France on a state visit hosted by Emmanuel Macron where the French leader will seek to push his counterpart on issues ranging from Ukraine to trade. Xi’s arrival for the visit marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between France and China was the start of his first trip to Europe since 2019 which will also see him visit Serbia and Hungary.

But Xi’s choice of France as the sole major European power to visit indicates the relative warmth in Sino-French relations since Macron made his own state visit to China in April 2023 and acknowledges the French leader’s stature as an EU powerbroker.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said the plane carrying Xi had touched down in Paris.

Panama voters to choose president after front-runner sentenced

0
Many Martinelli voters are expected to transfer their votes to Mr Mulino

Panamanians are voting in a general election which has been overshadowed by the disqualification of the man who was leading in the polls.

Ex-President Ricardo Martinelli was the favourite to win until he was banned from running after being found guilty of money laundering.

His replacement on the ballot, José Raúl Mulino, is leading in the polls.

Whoever wins most of the votes in this round will be declared president and sworn in on 1 July.

There are a total of eight candidates competing for the presidency, and voters will also choose members of Panama’s national assembly. As presidents cannot serve two consecutive terms, the incumbent, Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo, will not stand for re-election.

Opinion polls put Mr Mulino in the lead. The 64-year-old lawyer from the Realizando Metas (Achieving Goals) party was Mr Martinelli’s running mate.

But after Mr Martinelli was sentenced to almost 11 years in prison for money laundering, Mr Mulino joined the race for president.

However, Mr Mulino’s candidacy has also faced legal challenges.

Panama’s top court was asked to decide whether the fact that Mr Mulino was not chosen by his party in the customary primary election invalidated his candidacy.

Israel-Gaza ceasefire talks: Israel cannot accept Hamas demands

0
Netanyahu has insisted his forces will press ahead with a ground offensive

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will not accept Hamas’s demands for Israel to end the Gaza war. It comes as negotiators were resuming talks in Egypt to broker a pause in Israel’s Gaza offensive in return for the release of hostages taken by Hamas. The main sticking point appears to be if the truce will be permanent – as Hamas insists – or not.

Mr Netanyahu said the proposed deal would keep Hamas in control of Gaza, posing a threat to Israel.

It is thought the wording being discussed in the Cairo talks involves a 40-day pause in fighting while hostages are released, and the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails. An adviser to the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said the group was looking at the latest proposal with “full seriousness”.

But he repeated a demand that any deal would have to explicitly include an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and complete end to the war.

Speaking on Sunday, Mr Netanyahu said: “We are not ready to accept a situation in which the Hamas battalions come out of their bunkers, take control of Gaza again, rebuild their military infrastructure, and return to threatening the citizens of Israel in the surrounding communities, in the cities of the south, in all parts of the country.”

Seven Most Effective Exercises

0

There’s no mystery about exercise: You get out of it what you put in. But you don’t have to work out for hours each day. You just need to work smart.

Not all exercises are created equal. Some are more efficient than others, whether they target multiple muscle groups, are OK for various fitness levels, or help you burn calories more effectively.

So what are the best exercises? We posed this question to four fitness experts and compiled a list of their favorites.

 1. Walking

Any exercise program should include cardiovascular exercise, which strengthens the heart and burns calories. And walking is something that most people can do anywhere, anytime, with no equipment other than a good pair of shoes.

It’s not just for beginners, either: Even the very fit can get a good workout from walking.

“Doing a brisk walk can burn up to 500 calories per hour,” says Robert Gotlin, DO, director of orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. Since it takes 3,500 calories to lose a pound, you could expect to lose a pound for every seven hours you walk, if you did nothing else.

Don’t go from the sofa to walking an hour day, though.  beginners should start by walking five to -10 minutes at a time, gradually moving up to at least 30 minutes per session, says Richard Cotton, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise.

“Don’t add more than 5 minutes at a time,” he says. Another tip: As you get fitter, it’s better to add more time to your walk before boosting your speed or cranking up the incline on your treadmill.

2. Interval training

Whether you’re a beginner or have exercised for years, adding interval training to your cardiovascular workout will boost your fitness level and may help you lose weight.

“Varying your pace throughout the exercise session stimulates the aerobic system to adapt,” Cotton says. “The more power the aerobic system has, the more capacity you have to burn calories.”

The way to do it is to push the intensity or pace for a minute or two, then back off for anywhere from two to -10 minutes (depending on how long your total workout will be, and how much time you need to recover). Continue doing this throughout the workout. Ask a trainer what an appropriate interval is for you.

3. Squats

Strength training is also essential. “The more muscular fitness you have,” says Cotton, “the greater the capacity you have to burn calories.”

The experts interviewed for this story tended to favor strength-training exercises that target multiple muscle groups. Squats, which work the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteals, are an excellent example. “They give you the best bang for the buck because they use the most muscle groups at once,” says  trainer David Petersen of Oldsmar, FL.

Good form is key. “What makes an exercise functional is how you perform the exercise,” Petersen says. “If you have bad technique, it’s no longer functional.”

For squats, keep your feet shoulder-width apart and your back straight. Bend your knees and lower your rear. “The knee should remain over the ankle as much as possible,” Cotton says.

4. Lunges

Like squats, lunges work all the major muscles of the lower body: gluteals, quadriceps, and hamstrings.

A lunge is a great exercise because it mimics walking, only exaggerated, Petersen says.

Lunges are a bit more advanced than squats, helping to improve your balance as well, Cotton notes.

Here’s how to do them right: Take a big step forward, keeping your spine in a neutral position. Bend your front knee to approximately 90 degrees, focusing on keeping weight on the back toes and dropping the knee of your back leg toward the floor.

Petersen suggests that you imagine sitting on your back foot. “The trailing leg is the one you need to sit down on,” he says.

To make a lunge even more functional, Rufa recommends trying to step not just forward, but back and out to each side.

“Life is not linear, it’s multiplanar,” Rufa says. And the better they prepare you for the various positions you’ll move in during the course of a day, the more useful exercises are.

5. Push-ups

If done correctly, the push-up can strengthen the chest, shoulders, triceps, and even the core trunk muscles, all at one time.

Push-ups can be done at any level of fitness/ “For someone who is at a more beginning level, start by pushing from the kitchen-counter height,” Cotton says. “Then work your way to a desk, a chair, the floor with bent knees, and, finally, the floor on your toes.”

Here’s how to do a push-up: From a face-down position, place your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Place your toes or knees on the floor, and try to create a perfect diagonal with your body, from the shoulders to the knees or feet. Keep the glutes [rear-end muscles] and abdominals engaged. Then lower and lift your body by bending and straightening your elbows, keeping your torso stable throughout.

There are  ways to make it harder. Once your form is perfect, try what Rufa calls the “T-stabilization” push-up: Get into push-up position, then do your push-ups with one arm raised out to the side, balancing on the remaining three limbs without rotating your hips.

6. Abdominal Crunches

When done correctly, the familiar crunch (along with its variations) is a good choice to target your ab muscles.

For a standard crunch, says Cotton, begin lying on your back with feet flat on the floor and fingertips supporting your head. Press your low back down and begin the exercise by contracting abdominals and peeling first your head (tucking your chin slightly), then your neck, shoulders, and upper back off the floor.

Be careful not to pull your neck forward by sticking the chin out; don’t hold your breath, and keep elbows out of your line of vision to keep chest and shoulders open.

Petersen teaches his clients to do crunches with their feet off the floor and knees bent. He says that with feet kept on the floor, many people tend to arch the back and engage the hip flexors.

7. Bent-over Row

This exercise works all the major muscles of the upper back, as well as the biceps.

Here’s how to do it with good form. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, then bend knees and flex forward at the hips. (If you have trouble doing this exercise standing up, support your weight by sitting on an incline bench, facing backward.) Tilt your pelvis slightly forward, engage the abdominals, and extend your upper spine to add support.

Hold dumbbells or barbell beneath the shoulders with hands about shoulder-width apart. Flex your elbows, and lift both hands toward the sides of your body. Pause, then slowly lower hands to the starting position. (Beginners should do the move without weights.)
