A ceremony held via Zoom to plant a common tree to climax the planting of 40,000 trees in demarcated areas of the Kwadaso Municipality, under the Municipal Climate Partnership, between Kwadaso Municipal Assembly and Neu-Isenburg in Germany has been held at Edwenase in Kumasi.

The Kwadaso-Neu Isenburg project, which started in 2019, is purely a Municipal Climate Partnership with a focus on aforestation, renewable energies, sensitization on sustainable waste management and the establishment of fair trade.

To climax the fifth year of planting about 40,000 trees within the Kwadaso Municipality, the two sister-cities decided to plant a common tree, the Silk Tree, known locally as ‘Awiemfuo Samena’, the symbol of the partnership and which has the potential of surviving under the climate in Ghana and also in Germany.

Mr. Richmond Agyenim Boateng, the Municipal Chief Executive observed that the tree planting project, under the Municipal Climate Partnership, has created forests at Yaa Asantewaa SHS, AAMUSTED campus, and planted trees at Nzema Community Day SHS and almost all schools within Kwadaso, including the schools in the barracks, as well as the road median from Sofoline to Abuakwa Kasapreko.

He explained that the “simultaneous planting of a common tree in Kwadaso and Neu-Isenburg as a symbol of our partnership and common goal also reminds us all of our responsibility in relation to the climate change”, and added that “let us continue to work together to make a difference in the fight against climate change”.

The Mayor of Neu-Isenburg, Mr. Dirk Gene Hagelstein, said the planting of a common tree was to cement the Kwadaso-Neu Isenburg partnership and to climax the planting of 40,000 trees by 2024.

He stated that the Municipal Climate Partnership is not only about tree planting, but also to help in other areas such as providing schools and health facilities within Kwadaso with beds, solar power and water.

Mr. Osei-Wusu Karikari, the Co-ordinator of the project, in an interview disclosed that the funding from the City of Neu-Isenburg is about 240,000 Euros, which started in 2022 and that about 10,000 seedlings, including species like Royal Palm, indigenous trees like acacia and cindela are being planted this year to complete the 40,000 trees earmarked under the partnership.

About 10,000 seedlings, including economic trees like mangoes and coconut trees, would be planted under the last phase of the project.

He explained that the main purpose of the partnership is to reduce the temperatures and increase oxygen in the atmosphere and stated that, “we are identifying homes of those who want to plant coconut trees in their houses and supply them with the seedlings and monitor that the coconut trees will survive in their homes”.

Nana Wiredu Akokoro Panini III, Atwima Denchemuoso Odikro and Atwima Akwamuhene, who represented the Atwimahene said the Municipal Climate Partnership is a brilliant idea and appealed to residents to the Kwadaso Municipality to embrace the project to plant and nurture a tree.

At least twenty-four persons are said to have been killed and several others wounded in a fresh bandits attack on Unguwar Sarkin Noma community in Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Those killed were mostly vigilante members who reportedly came out to confront the bandits.

A local security official told Channels Television that during the attack which lasted for about an hour, four villages were raided by the hoodlums in what he described as reprisals over military offensives on the bandits’ hideouts.

He explained that the hoodlums stormed the villages of Unguwar Sarkin Noma, Gangara, Tafi, and Kore on Thursday night at about 9:00 pm shooting sporadically to scare the residents.

The Chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Council, Faruq Dalhatu, on a telephone call, said 23 of the victims were buried per the Islamic rites on Friday morning after the attack.

He added that the last victim was also conveyed for burial from the hospital after he was certified dead.

“Upon hearing of the bandits’ mission to attack the Local Government Council, we swung into action by informing virtually all the security agencies. “They (security agencies) all responded to our distress call and availed themselves to the community. Before you know it, the Bandits raided the community and killed these people.

“Twenty-three people were buried from the beginning, in accordance with Islamic rites, and the last victim was conveyed from the hospital after he was certified dead,” he added.

Police authorities are yet to comment on the attack as phone calls put through the spokesman of the Katsina Police Command Abubakar Sadiq, were unanswered.

Princess Fathia Nkrumah with two of the awards

Ghana’s first Kente documentary, “Kente Culture Story Documentary Film: The Importance of Kente to Ghanaians & Black Africans,” produced, directed and funded by award-winning, BBC journalist Amma Prempeh, has won three awards at the fourth edition of the Golden Age Business and Creative Arts Awards (GACAA) in Accra on May 1, 2024.

The awards are “Woman of Excellence: Creative Art Personality of the Year”; “Woman of Excellence: Tourism and Arts Personality of the Year” and “Yaa Asantewaa Woman of Valour and Honour Award.”

The Awards event held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra was sponsored by Silver Hair Ghana.

The awards seem to be the obvious response to Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, H.E. Ambassador Hajia Alima Mahama’s recommendation on seeing the film, that the Ghana Tourism Authority should support Amma Prempeh to promote tourism.

The film was first premiered in Ghana on August 26, 2023 at the Golden Eagle Cinema in Kumasi City Mall, and subsequently screened at the African Regent Hotel in Accra on September 10, 2023 before being screened on the world stage this year.

Princess Fathia Nkrumah, a member of the cast and granddaughter of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, received the three awards on behalf of Amma Prempeh.

She expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the singular honour to receive three prestigious awards on behalf of Amma Prempeh in recognition of her remarkable contributions to the promotion of Ghanaian culture, heritage and tourism through the beautiful “Kente Culture Story Documentary.”

Fathia Nkrumah was happy to see Amma Prempeh’s dedication and tireless efforts, mostly under hostile conditions for two years, to bring the project to life and recognised in such a meaningful way.

She said she was happy Amma Prempeh had been rewarded for hard work and resilience.

Fathia Nkrumah noted that the recognition was poignant as the documentary celebrates the significance of Kente in Ghana’s history and culture and that the wearing of Kente was not only a symbol of pride and identity but also a significant part of her grandfather, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s philosophy of African personality and his belief in the power of Kente to unite and create a national identity.

Princess Fathia Nkrumah also expressed Amma Prempeh’s profound appreciation to God for his grace and favour, the Manhyia Palace for the guidance and support her late father, Mr. Kwasi Prempeh, her mum, Mrs. Mabel Prempeh, the Prempeh family and friends for encouraging her to the finish line, the amazing high profile casts and crew who made all things possible. She also thanked Golden Age Business and Creative Arts Awards and the sponsors.

Teacher unions in Volta Region demonstrate against poor conditions of service

The teachers demonstrating through the principal streets of Ho

Teacher unions in pre-tertiary education in the Volta region have staged a peaceful demonstration in demand of better conditions of service in Ho, the regional capital.

About 800 teachers, made up of members from the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers of Ghana (CCT-GH) took part in the demonstration.

They walked through the principal streets of Ho, as they sang patriotic songs and danced to local Borborbor and brass band music.

They also carried placards, some of which read: ‘Let teachers enjoy the benefit of their labour’, ‘Don’t treat us like animals’, ‘We deserve better condition of service’, ‘Pay us clothing allowance’, ‘We want our reward on earth’, ‘Teachers are not beggars’, and ‘We deserve our pound of flesh and not only the politicians,’ among others.

The demonstrators finally converged at the forecourt of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), where a petition was presented to the Regional Coordinating Director, Mr Augustus Awity, as the Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, was not present.

The absence of the Regional Minister infuriated the demonstrators, who shouted “We want to see the minister, no minister no handing over of petition”.

The Volta Regional Secretary of GNAT, Mr Kassim Seidu Baba, who read the petition said government had taken teachers for granted for far too long because since negotiation in 2009 and after the 2020 Collective Agreement, the unions had known no peace. This is due to the government’s failure to implement the 15 allowances agreed upon, as well as fulfilling promises made to the teachers.

He mentioned four of the allowances as the Deprived Area Allowance, the Extra Assessment Allowance, the Book, Data, Online Teaching support allowance and the upward adjustment of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance.

Mr Baba said despite the gesture of good faith from the teacher unions, the government was still resolute and had demonstrated bad faith, culminating in high level despondency and disaffection for leadership of the teacher unions.

He said the leaders could no longer afford the numerous complaints, coupled with the economic hardship in the country, saying the last 24 months was the most tortuous for the Ghanaian teacher, with no ray of relief initiated by the employer.

The teachers, therefore, called on the government to honour its promises and commitment to teachers by addressing their concerns adding that teachers had enough of the indifference, complacency and unfriendliness of the employer and would no longer countenance any disappointment.

Mr Baba, on behalf of the teacher unions, gave the government up to May 13, 2024 to address the concerns raised by teachers and that should they fail, the national leadership would be called to take action immediately, which would be detrimental to national development.

Media will not be cowed into submission –GJA Prez

Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, has indicated that the media would not be intimidated by the evils that the oppressors perpetuate against journalists in the country.

According to him, there is an emerging intimidation tactic, shameful and terrorist attack which is fast degenerating into culture of barbarism against journalists by some group of people and individuals.

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour (right) and his Eastern Regional compatriot exchanging a warm greeting.

He stated that the evildoers against press freedom are not tired and that they keep coming at journalists and the media houses with more venom, a situation that needed the support of all those who believe in press freedom.

This was contained in a speech read at this year’s World Press Freedom Day 2024 (WPFD), which was held at Koforidua last week Friday.

World Press Freedom Day is a time to reflect on the current state of press freedom here and around the world, to celebrate our achievements, identify challenges and work together to strengthen press freedom and the journalism profession.

Citing the recent petrol bomb attack on Class FM as clear intimidation tactics by the oppressors, Mr Kwabena Dwumfour described the act as shameful and what he considered to be terrorists attack.

He called on the Ghana Police Service to expedite investigations into the matter and prosecute the perpetrators because the failure of the Police to arrest and prosecute them would embolden others to commit similar crimes, thinking that nothing would happen to them.

The GJA President was of the view that such an attack would pose a great danger to the quest for national peace, especially as we prepare for Election 2024, adding that these attacks are meant to intimidate journalists and the media, but that will never happen.

The event, which was on the the theme: Leveragingjournalism for sustainable environment and future,” was the first time in recent memory that the GJA is commemorating WPFD outside Accra.

A group picture of the very important personalities shortly after the ceremony

The GJA boss disclosed that the decision was in line with a commitment made by the National Executive of the GJA to organise such national events outside Accra, in order to make the regional branches vibrant and inspire in all members a strong sense of belonging in the Association, regardless of their geographical location.

Mr Dwumfuor continued that despite the national theme for the occasion, the global theme for WPFD 2024 is: “Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis” was very apt, given the extensive damage environmental degradation is doing to the Planet and the recognition of the potency of journalism to deal with the environmental crisis the world is facing now.

To him, the decision of the GJA to choose the national theme for WPFD 2024 meant to lead a strong media campaign for the protection of the environment and the good of the country.

He called on the media to resume the concerted campaign against illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as ‘Galamsey’, a collective action, which yielded positive results in the past.

“But for the retrogression in action by duty bearers, sanity would have prevailed and our land and water bodies would have been healed by now. That notwithstanding, withdrawing from our duty, as we have done now, is more harmful to the nation”, he stressed.

The GJA President mentioned that apart from ‘galamsey’, the GJA “wishes to call on the media to focus on and address other environmental issues such as sanitation and climate change.”

He was of the conviction that our survival as a nation was dependent on the environment, which included plants, forests, water bodies, and other natural resources, and “we must do everything humanly necessary to protect them.”

Press Attache of the US Embassy in Accra, Kevin Brosnahan, addressing the gathering at the WPFD

On his part, the Press Attache at the US Embassy in Ghana, Kevin Brosnahan, expressed grave concern over the country’s decline in the World Press Freedom Index, which he attributed to a variety of factors including high-profile attacks and abuse of journalists.

According to him, over the past year, the country has witnessed multiple invasions of media houses and physical attacks on journalists as well as individuals affiliated with political candidates accused of physical abuse of journalists.

The Press Attache at the US Embassy in Ghana described the Physical attacks, intimidation and threats against journalists as unacceptable.

According to him, many journalists around the world have been killed in the line of duty. That includes Ahmed Suale, who was murdered in Accra in 2019. Five years have passed without justice for Ahmed Suale and his family.  It is far past time for his loved ones to have closure and for those who murdered him to face justice.

To him, the role of a free press and professional journalists is never more important than during an election year, adding that journalists must play the role of analyst, helping voters understand their rights, the issues, their choices, and how to participate.

He cautioned that as Journalists play a critical role in fighting misinformation and disinformation, they must depart from just reporting rumours and exercise a high level of responsibility as professional journalists to fact-check and confirm their stories before publishing.

Kevin Brosnahan was convinced that reporting environmental issues would illuminate public policy issues and help local communities understand the risks, providing pieces of information, which could empower communities to make local decisions to protect their own environment, their land, and their water.

The Press Attache  further reiterated the United States’ support for press freedom, adding that the U.S. Embassy, along with “our partners, have trained more than 400 journalists in Ghana on election reporting, fact-checking and disinformation, environmental reporting and conflict-sensitive reporting this year alone.”

“It requires you to tell the stories of underrepresented communities and minority groups and advocate for their rights, even when these groups are not in public favour.

“It requires you to dive into public policy issues, analyze them, and explain the impacts of policy decisions”, he mentioned.

The event was attended by Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong and Minister of Information-designate, Fatimatu Abubakar.

The rest are Executive Director of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr John Kingsley Akrugu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Environment & Sustainable Development, Prof Eric Nyarko Sampson, Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Prof Amin Alhassan.
