Dusty roads causing dangerous respiratory infections across rural Ghana

0
A dusty road in Sagnarigu Municipality

Sagnarigu, Northern Region – Ebenezer Danso, a 19-year-old battling severe asthma, recently came perilously close to losing his life.

“When I woke up that day, the weather was cold. I had difficulty breathing, was coughing, and couldn’t go to school,” says Ebenezer. For four agonizing weeks, Ebenezer struggled with worsening symptoms, relying on herbal remedies that offered no relief. His parents resisted taking him to hospital.

“When I told my mother I couldn’t breathe well, she gave me herbal medicine because my father, who is also an asthmatic patient, treats his illness with it,” Ebenezersays. It was not until his condition became critical that his father recognized the need for professional medical intervention and rushed him to the hospital. There he was diagnosed with a severe upper respiratory tract infection which had progressed to pneumonia, a lung infection which can be life threatening. Ebenezer spent three days in the hospital recovering.

Doctors told Ebenezer his infection was likely caused by the dust he inhales from the unpaved roads in this community in Ghana’s north, on his daily walk to school. They advised him to wear a nose mask everyday. But Ebenezeris still scared. He worries that it might only be a matter of time before he battles the same predicament that nearly took his life.

“I have struggled from this sickness and I am afraid I will come back to the hospital because there’s dust everywhere in the community and I have nowhere to go to because Sagnarigu is my home,” he says with a sense of hopelessness.

Communities across Ghana are struggling with illnesses caused by dusty roads but this area is being impacted more than most. Sagnarigu, Ebenezer’s hometown, has consistently recorded the highest number of upper respiratory tract infections in the Northern Region of Ghana. Out of more than 430,000 cases reported in the regionin the past three years Sagnarigu Municipality has recorded the highest number – nearly 48,000.

Dust darkens the skies around the local hospital

Road dust carries various types of pollutants into the air that, once inhaled, cause illnesses in the respiratory system, lungs and heart.

“When we inhale dust, it easily enters our bloodstream. The air we breathe contains many pathogens and germs,” says Dr Mark Abugri, director of Health Services in the Sagnarigu Municipal Health Directorate. “Our immune system and the mucous membranes in our nose usually protect us, but when these defenses are compromised, the risk of infection increases significantly.”

Dr Abugri warns that more people in the community will suffer respiratory infections and illnesses like stroke, heart disease, diabetes and cancer if action is not taken to protect them from dust. In the meantime he encourages people to protect themselves.

“We encourage people to wear nose masks, especially during the dry season, to prevent dust from entering their respiratory system,” Dr Abugrisays. “But the best solution is to tar the roads. Until all our roads are tarred, we will always have dusty roads, and consequently, we will continue to see high rates of respiratory tract infections.”

Residents have expressed frustration over the persistent problem. Store holders here inhale the dust and spend the day cleaning it from their wares. “We cannot avoid traveling on these roads. We inhale the dust, and we get sick. There is no other alternative,” says Adiza Giwah, a local resident who has been treated for respiratory tract infections twice.

She says going to the hospital for the treatment of respiratory infections has almost become a routine among the community members.

“I sell by the roadside. My friends from the community always pass by my shop when they are going to the hospital. We have complained a lot but still nothing has been done,” Adiza says.

Hospital staff echo the findings of the Health Directorate. They say treating the illnesses repeatedly has diverted staff time and resources from treating other ailments.

“People come here every single day with the infection,” says Dr Martin Atuguba, a doctor at the Tamale Technical University Hospital. “We are tired of it. They come, get treated and return with it again.”

Dr Atuguba warns that things will get worse if nothing is done. “The long-term effects of upper respiratory tract infections can be severe if not properly managed. While these infections are typically self-limiting, they can lead to complications such as pneumonia or sinusitis.”

Dr Atuguba urges the government to address the issue. “It’s a policy problem that require implementation of laws and provision of infrastructure. Good roads would significantly reduce dust in the community which will significantly lead to decrease in respiratory infections.”

Issah Baba, Assemblyman in Sagnarigu who represents the local community, says the 20,000 people here are being left behind in development of infrastructure and public services.

“It’s quite obvious that we are behind with our environmental issues, ranging from poor sanitation to dusty roads,” says Baba. “We only have one major road constructed in this community. The rest are all untarred roads. With the population here, it’s obvious that the usage far exceeds what this single tarred road can handle. The ultimate solution to this problem would be to make the roads very good, but the resources do not allow that.”

He challenged the government to solve the problem or face backlash from the community. “We expect the leadership of the country to come to the aid of the people, not just for their sake but for the future generation,” says Baba.

In the interim, community leadership and medical staff are urging sensitization campaigns by health authorities and relevant stakeholders to educate residents on how to protect themselves from dust exposure and they’re urging people to wear nose masks as a minimum first step.

California wildfire forces evacuations as it devours 12,000 acres

Firefighters working in sweltering conditions and steep terrain raced to douse spot fires

A wildfire burning northwest of the US city of Los Angeles has forced the evacuation of about 1,200 people from a popular outdoor recreation area and burned more than 12,000 acres (about 4,850 hectares), authorities said.

About 400 firefighters, accompanied by 70 firetrucks and two bulldozers, are battling the blaze, authorities said. Dubbed the Post Fire, it was contained just 2 percent until Sunday evening. Los Angeles County’s first major wildfire of the year swiftly grew to nearly 23sq miles (60sq km).

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the inferno, which was burning about 60 miles (96km) northwest of the Californian city, was under investigation.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said efforts to contain the fire are being hampered by high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds.

Water-dropping aircraft are working to try to halt the progress of the fire, while firefighters are constructing perimeter fire lines to get the blaze under control.

About 1,200 people were evacuated from the Hungry Valley recreation area, which has trails for motorcycles and off-road vehicles, after the fire broke out. Two structures have been destroyed so far.

Meanwhile in Northern California, a small wildfire on Sunday prompted evacuation orders and warnings for a sparsely populated area near Lake Sonoma.

Known as the Point Fire, it sent up a huge plume of dark smoke as it churned through brush and timber about 80 miles (130km) north of San Francisco, and destroyed at least one structure. It was 15 percent contained.

NDC accuses NPP of bussing SHS students to political rally

0
Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi addressing the media

The Ashanti Regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed worry over the alleged bussing of Senior High School students by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to their political rally dubbed Youth Connect in Kumasi.

At a press conference in Kumasi, Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi and Mr. Baah Achamfuor, the Ashanti Regional Chairman and Deputy Regional Secretary respectively, criticised unlawful bussing of students from various Senior High Schools to the Youth Connect programme.

The NDC believes that the act was meant to create a crowd effect to shore up Bawumia’s sinking popularity in his own political stronghold.

According to the Ashanti Regional NDC, they find the development very worrying because it shows the desperate lengths the NPP is prepared to go just to create an illusion of popularity.

They indicated that, the laws of Ghana do not allow partisan politics in the Senior High Schools and for the Headmasters of these institutions to have released SHS students, some of whom are minors to participate in political activities at the time they are supposed to be in school studying, indicates how low they are prepared to go to please their NPP collaborators.

The NDC said  it is even shocking that these developments happened right under the nose of the Minister for Education, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, who was engaged by President Akufo-Addo to restore sanity in our educational system.

According to the NDC, the incident raises a fundamental ethical concern regarding the safety of students and the conduciveness of the educational environment, saying it is a shame that Dr. Yaw Adutwum who was brought in to introduce international best practices in our education sector is overseeing the destruction of Senior High Schools with unbridled partisan politicization.

As a result, the NDC has called on parents to join forces with them to demand answers from CHASS and GES for exposing their wards to this needless political danger when school is supposed to be in session.

Mr Augustus Andrews alleged that Dr. Bawumia’s convoy was booed and jeered at the Kejetia Central Market the very same place where Dr. Bawumia received the loudest applause in 2016, which he described as a show of disapproval of mismanagement of the economy leading to the collapse of many businesses in the Ashanti Region.

The NDC Regional chairman noted that the unpopular status of the NPP has loudly reflected in the ongoing voter transfer to the extent that they had to bus people from some selected constituencies like Bantama, Oforikrom, Kwabre West to areas where they know their candidates have already lost.

To him,  it is evident that the police arrested two NPP supporters at AbodomKrotwea in the Bekwai constituency recently where a number of voter IDs from NPP members were collected with the promise to transfer their names to New Edubiase Constituency.

He lamented that to their outmost surprise, the police granted them bail following a supposed order from above, adding that they suspect that some high-ranked police officers are keenly involved in perpetrating that act and wish to unambiguously remind those Police officers that they the NDC would not be intimidated by insisting on their rights as citizens of Ghana.

The NDC Regional Chairman reminded the occupants of the new Kejetia terminal that, somewhere last year when Kejetia market was gutted by fire, Dr. Bawumia visited them and promised to reconstruct the affected area in the shortest possible time, but has reneged on his pledge.

Chairman Nana Kwasi urged the good people of the Ashanti Region to keep faith with NDC and vote massively for the former President John Dramani Mahama as he has a better track record in terms of development in the Ashanti region.

K’si newspaper vendors chair wants Bawumia to assist Ibrahim Mahama

Bismark Ayensu – Chairman, Ashanti Regional NPP Newspaper Vendors Association

The chairman of the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Newspaper Vendors Association, Bismark Ayensu, has lauded the Vice President and NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, for his proposed private sector agenda to grow the economy.

Dr. Bawumia is on record to have declared his desire to facilitate private sector growth through incentives and reduce government expenditure. He said during his tour of the Ashanti region recently while  addressing professional bodies that his  government  would  give tax amnesty to all businesses  and introduce  flat tax system  as  part of major  reforms  to transform Ghana.

As a result of the flagbearer’s position, Mr. Ayensu has recommended for the consideration of Ibrahim Mahama, the Ghanaian businessman and founder of Engineers and Planners, a West African indigenous-owned mining company, to be involved in this private sector growth agenda.

The chief vendor also suggested  that the next  NPP administration under Dr Bawumia’s leadership must  assist Mr Mahama  to  grow his businesses  to enable  him  absorb  the youth in  employment.

According to him, the NPP must see Ibrahim Mahama first, as a Ghanaian capable of contributing to the growth of the economy and not a blood relation of NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Ayensu said Mr. Ibrahim Mahama owns several other businesses in Ghana, including Dzata Cement Limited and must be given the required push to help grow the economy and promote Corporate Ghana.

“It is time Ghana also encouraged businesses to grow and create the likes of Aliko Dangote locally”, he said.

Mr. Ayensu’s recommendation comes from his admiration for Ibrahim Mahama, as a role model who needs support to augment capacity to employ a sizable number of the unemployed youth and thus lessen the burden on the government.

Today’s Euro 2024 matches preview:

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal

Portugal take on Czech Republic at Leipzig Stadium

One of the favourites for this summer’s European Championship will take to the field on Tuesday evening, with Portugal opening their Euro 2024 campaign against the Czech Republic at Leipzig Stadium.

Portugal are being tipped as challengers for the trophy in Germany, while the Czech Republic will be bidding to progress from a section which also includes Turkey and Georgia.

Portugal famously triumphed at Euro 2016, and they have reached the semi-finals of this tournament on a further three occasions, but they were knocked out in the last-16 stage of Euro 2020.

The Iberian nation then reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, with Roberto Martinez taking charge soon after the competition, and there have been plenty of positive signs under the Spaniard.

France, England and Germany are considered to be the three favourites to win Euro 2024, but Portugal are also expected to be in the mix due to the talent and experience in their star-studded squad.

A Selecao das Quinas will enter their Group F opener off the back of a 3-0 success over Republic of Ireland in an international friendly, with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo coming up with a brace.

Portugal have actually lost two of their last four matches, but they are the heavy favourites to top this section, which also includes Turkey and Georgia, with definitely two but potentially three teams progressing.

Martinez’s side will face Turkey in their second match in Group F on June 22, before finishing their section against Georgia on June 26, with the knockout round of the competition beginning soon after.

Czech Republic, meanwhile, will enter this match off the back of a 2-1 victory over North Macedonia in their final warm-up fixture for the tournament on June 10.

Ivan Hasek‘s team are on a run of five straight wins in all competitions, including their final Euro 2024 qualification match against Moldova last November, while they have since beaten Norway, Armenia, Malta and North Macedonia in friendly fixtures.

Czech Republic were runners-up at Euro 1996, while they made the semi-finals in 2004 and have reached the quarter-finals in two of their last three tournaments, including at Euro 2020.

Winners as Czechoslovakia in 1976, the national side are capable of making an impression this summer, with a solid qualification campaign for Euro 2024 seeing them pick up 15 points from their eight matches, finishing ahead of Poland in Group E.

Czech Republic have lost four of their previous five matches against Portugal, including a 4-0 defeat when the two countries last locked horns in the UEFA Nations League in September 2022.

Turkey & Georgia meet at Dortmund

Group F at Euro 2024 will get underway on Tuesday evening in Dortmund, with Turkey and Georgia locking horns for what is likely to be a very important match in the section.

Portugal and Czech Republic are also present in the group, and while the former are the huge favourites to finish at the summit, the other three teams will be eyeing second position.

Hakan Calhanoglu, Turkey

Turkey’s best-ever performance in a European Championship came back in 2008, when they reached the semi-finals of the competition, but they were eliminated in the group stage of both Euro 2016 and Euro 2020.

The Crescent-Stars will be expecting to pick up enough points to progress to the round of 16 from this section, though, and they will be the favourites to overcome Georgia on matchday one.

Vincenzo Montella‘s side will enter the tournament off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Poland, and they have not actually been victorious in any of their last five matches, suffering three defeats in the process.

Turkey’s final Euro 2024 qualification fixture ended in a 1-1 draw with Wales on November 21, but a strong campaign saw them top Group D ahead of Croatia, picking up 17 points from their eight matches.

The national side will be tackling Georgia for just the sixth time on Tuesday, and they have been victorious in three of their previous five match-ups, including a 3-1 success when the two sides last locked horns in an international friendly back in May 2012.

Georgia, meanwhile, are preparing to take to the field at a major tournament for the first time in their history, and it will be fascinating to see how the national side perform this summer.

Willy Sagnol‘s side beat Greece on penalties in the playoffs to secure their spot at the tournament, and they have only actually played once since that historic night, beating Montenegro 3-1 in a friendly on June 9.

Whether a lack of preparation hurts them remains to be seen, but the fixture list in the group could work in their favour, as they will avoid Portugal until matchday three, and Roberto Martinez‘s side could potentially have booked their spot in the knockout round by that point, which would likely lead to key players being rested.

Georgia’s standout player is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with the 23-year-old, who plays his club football for Napoli, scoring 15 goals in 30 appearances for his national side.

However, Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, Slovan Bratislava’s Guram Kashia and Watford’s Giorgi Chakvetadze are also notable inclusions, and there is no question that the Crusaders have the talent to surprise a few at this summer’s tournament.

Myself & Dame Met 4 Times @ Odd Hrs …Jakpa tells court after admission of audio recordings into evidence

0
Godfred Yeboah Dame, Attorney General and Minister for Justice

A Businessman, Richard Jakpa, has disclosed in the ongoing ambulance trial that he met the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, four times at odd hours, at a Supreme Court judge’s house to discuss matters related to the trial.

According to him, the meetings were held between the hours of 9:00pm and 11:00pm at the said Supreme Court judge, Justice Emmanuel Yonny Kolendi’s residence.

Richard Jakpa

Mr Jakpa also told the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice of the Court of Appeal, Her Ladyship Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, that he requested for the first meeting and the Attorney-General (A-G) arranged it through ‘his brother’, who is a Supreme Court judge.

This was made known in court yesterday during further cross-examination by Dr Abdul Baasit Aziz Bamba, after having once again admitted the secretly recorded conversation between him (A3) and the Attorney General (A-G).

Initially, A3 said he cooperated with the A-G by providing him with some critical documents relating to instant trial, on the promise that he would be acquitted at the stage of submission of no case to answer, particularly when Mr Dame had told him that his main target in the trial is Dr. Cassiel Baah Ato Forson (A1).

Mr. Jakpa, therefore, felt betrayed following the A-G’s failure to honour his part of the alleged bargain by discharging him during the submission of no case stage. The accused is in the witness box giving testimony and answering questions from Ato Forson’s lead counsel, Dr Abdul Baasit Aziz Bamba.

The third accused indicated that the problems relating to the ambulance contract were resolved long before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took over in the year 2017, and explained this extensively to the then Minister for Health, Kweku Agyeman Manu, that no financial loss had been occasioned by the contract.

He further disclosed that despite impressing upon Mr. Manu to clear the ambulance accessories that had been shipped by Big Sea Medicals from the Tema port, to enable it send down their technicians, the then minister refused.

Mr. Manu allegedly told A3 point blank that the case had been lifted from his ministry and that the government was interested in providing that opportunity to its party folks to also make money.

To him, the trial was mischievously conceived and deliberatively orchestrated to sabotage the ambulance project, since it originated from the previous government.

“PW3 Agyeman Manu told me that he has seen the letter in the ministry, but that I must understand that this is a new government and the ambulance case has been taken out of his hands and it’s now being handled by his party’s headquarters.

“That they are also going to get their businessmen to order new ambulances so they can make money for their businessmen. So NDC will have to come back and clear their mess, and true to that, he (Agyeman Manu) refused to implement these two documents and they went ahead and ordered the same Mercedes Benz vans 311and got another company, a third party company, because Mercedes as a manufacturer doesn’t produce ambulances. They only produce vans.

“A their party company, which converts vans of any manufacturer in the world into ambulances, like Big Sea also converted this Mercedes Benz vans into ambulances, shipped them to Ghana, stayed in Ghana for one whole year, packed and awaiting for their accessories to be also shipped, which was eventually shipped and they fixed them in Ghana and distributed them, which are now roaming on our streets, which is no different from the ambulances that Big Sea has shipped and the accessories also shipped since 2016 and abandoned at the port for almost 8 years. So the claim can be made that Big Sea’s ambulances are empty trotro,” he said.

He apportioned part of the blame to Sherry Ayitey, who served as Minister for Health under the NDC government for interfering with the process, by ordering Big Sea to stall production of the ambulances, causing undue delay in the execution of the contract.

“The late Sherry Ayitey waived the Ministry’s right to conduct reshipment inspection, as stated in the contract, which had occasioned the instant trial.

“I say this because on the assumption of governance by the current government in 2017, I personally approached the Minister for Health, Agyeman Manu, and implored on him to clear the accessories at the port because Segbefia wrote a letter to the Ministry of Finance in 2016. All the issues concerning the Ambulance implementation problems had been resolved by Segbefia before he took over office. And I showed him a letter to that effect.

“I showed him Exhibit 18 for A3, to the then Minister Agyemang Manu, supply of the 200 Mercedes Benz ambulances. 30 of the ambulances with all accessories have already been supplied to the ministry; Letters of Credit (LC) should be in the name of Jakpa, in line with high court order, signed by Segbefia. The letter acknowledged all the problems with the ambulances before this current government took over power.”

Furthermore, he said the trial judge was wrong on the assertion that all parties agreed that the ambulances in the condition that they arrived were not fit for purpose, saying he had not said that.

He indicated that the ambulances upon arrival were not meant to be used immediately at the first place, until the necessary technical challenges had been addressed.

Following Jakpa’s statement, the court has ordered the defence and the prosecution not to ambush the court, but file all disclosures by close of today, June 14, 2024.

AfDB loan saves cocoa industry from collapse -Boahen Aidoo

0
Joseph Boahen Aidoo, CE of Ghana Cocoa Board

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, says the multi-million dollar cocoa loan his outfit contracted from the Africa Development Bank (ADB) has judiciously been used to save the cocoa industry from collapse.

According to him, some of the cocoa farms were attacked by various diseases such as –“Witches’ Broom”, Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease (CSSVD) and that the government had to intervene to deal with the situation.

Cacao Plant Protection

Joseph Boahen Aidoo went ahead to mention some of these interventions as buying of new seeds, pay farmers monthly and also supported them in planting plants to support their families, as they try to revamp the destroyed cocoa trees.

He said this whilst speaking with Nana Yaw Fianko on Atinka TV’s Agenda show yesterday. According to him, the various diseases he earlier mentioned affected over 700,000 acres of cocoa farmlands, and that the only way to combat it was to uproot the trees.

He asserted that Sefwi was the epicentre of the disease noting that the disease impacted 320,000 hectares of land.

He admitted that in 2010, Ghana harvested a good amount of cocoa, but somewhere along the line, it declined due to the diseases.

“We went to the African Development Bank and they gave us the money, and we made the farmers know that it was not their fight but that of the government. Therefore, we purchased new seeds, planted them and managed the farms for two years, providing compensation of GHC 1,000 for each pole or hectare.

Currently, we have grown most of the cocoa, covering about 68,000 hectares. Approximately 40,000 hectares are fully ready for production and the farmers are already reaping the benefits, he said.

Joseph Boahen Aidoo, CE of Ghana Cocoa Board

Meanwhile, he claimed that the farms are doing better now than before the intervention. “Sometimes, people say we have accumulated loans; this was part of it; we used it for something profitable; we used it to save the industry and the farmers also know that we used it to save the industry; if not, the disease would have been spreading by now”, he added.

Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo said that although the spread of the disease had not completely stopped, they were able to contain it from causing more harm. Despite this feat, he said Ghana has not been able to generate the money it needed from cocoa, blaming it on many challenges.

Aside from the disease, he said that illegal mining is another thing that seriously affects cocoa farming.

The COCOBOD CEO explained that the miners dig the pit close to the cocoa farms and it draws water from the land under the cocoa farms, which results in dryness and affects the growth of the cocoa.

He mentioned that El-Nino also had an impact on cocoa farming. He said this was not the first time it was happening, saying that last year it brought excessive rainfall, which also affected the cocoa trees.

He said Ghana’s production will be one of the lowest this year due to the aforementioned challenges.

“Last year, it rained in August; ordinarily, it should not rain in August, so the non-stop rain that occurred last year destroyed a lot of things”.

NUGS reiterates call on EC to set up centres on campuses

0
NUGS executives

The National Union Ghana Students (NUGS) has made a passionate appeal to the Electoral Commission (EC) to consider reducing the plight of students by establishing voter transfer centres on university campuses.

According to the union, the current arrangement whereby students have to travel long distances to have the vote transferred at few and overcrowded voter transfer centres would hamper their chances of participating in this year’s general elections.

In a statement dated June 10, 2024 and signed by Daniel Oppong Kyerematen, National President of NUGS, he indicated that not only will the long distance travels to the voter transfer centres have a negative impact on their finances, but their studies as well.

Mr Kyerematen stated that their earlier petition to the EC was yet to yield any reasonable result.

“Our request stems from a genuine concern for the thousands of students who, while pursuing their educational goals, may find themselves unable to vote in their designated constituencies.

This situation is due to the simple fact that many students study far from their hometowns and places of residence.

“It is imperative that these students, who are contributing to the development of our nation through their education, are not neglected in a major decision-making exercise that shapes the future of Ghana,” he lamented.

He added that their petition is firmly rooted in the legal and constitutional framework of Ghana, where the Electoral Commission is mandated to regulate the registration of voters, including provisions for voting by proxy and the issue of identity cards.

Furthermore, Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution guarantees every citizen of Ghana, aged eighteen and above, the right to vote. Article 45 and Article 46 of the Constitution empower the Electoral Commission to make regulations for the transfer of votes, ensuring that no citizen is disenfranchised.

“In light of these challenges and legal provisions, we earnestly appeal to the Electoral Commission to establish voter registration centres on university campuses.

“This action will protect the guaranteed right to vote for students and ensure their active participation in the democratic process.

“By setting up these centres, the Electoral Commission will not only ease the logistical and financial burdens on students but also uphold the principles of inclusivity and fairness that underpin our democracy,” he stressed.

According to him, NUGS was committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of students and also hold the view that every student should have the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote without undue hardship.

13,875,286 seedlings distributed on Green Ghana Day

0
Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission says they distributed 13,875,286 seedlings nationwide on the Green Ghana Day, this year. This was disclosed by the Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Mr John Allotey, at a news conference held in Accra yesterday.

Officials of the Forestry Commission

Mr Allotey gave a comprehensive overview of the provisional seedling distribution results, highlighting that the Ashanti Region exceeded its target by 199%, distributing 4,170,552 seedlings, well above the initial target of 2,100,000.

Additionally, 13 other regions successfully exceeded their targets, demonstrating a nationwide commitment to environmental conservation.

Mr. Allotey acknowledged that two regions faced challenges in meeting their targets, but emphasised the Forestry Commission’s dedication to supporting these regions to achieve their goals.

He commended leading private plantation companies and churches for their contributions to the project’s success, specifically mentioning the Church of Pentecost, Presbyterian Church, Catholic Church, Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) and Methodist Church as the top five contributing churches.

Mr. Allotey also named Ecoplanet Bamboo West Africa, Messrs Evans Sawmills Ltd., and Miro Forestry Ghana Ltd. among others, while also commending the Muslim community, particularly the Chief Imam, for their support.

He further revealed that despite the number of seedlings already planted, more are available at various pick-up centres.

He urged all interested parties to visit their nearest Forestry Commission office to obtain a seedling to plant.
