No guy proposed to me throughout my schooling at Wesley Girls – Zanetor Rawlings

0

Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle constituency, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has said no guy proposed to her when she was in Wesley Girls Senior High School (SHS).

She attributed this to the strict disciplinary rules of the school, which limited interactions with male students from other schools.

Zanetor said her focus was on academics during her time at SHS not boys.

She explained that, visiting days in Wesley Girls were regulated with a structured registration process, which further restricted casual interactions.

“During your time at Wesley Girls, did any guy ever approach you with a compliment about your beauty, expressing a desire to date you or be your boyfriend?”

Zanetor, maintaining her composure, replied, “No.

She noted that “at Wesley Girls, visiting days were restricted; you couldn’t just turn up unannounced. Upon arrival, there was a procedure involving a table manned by senior students where visitors had to register their details and whom they intended to visit, after which the student would be summoned.

So, it was a structured process. And it wasn’t exclusive to me, by the way. That was the standard protocol. Perhaps I was simply naive, but the opportunities for interaction were indeed limited” she said in an interview on Starr FM.

Chinese rocket crashes after accidental launch during ground test

Chinese rocket crashes

A Chinese rocket crashed after being accidentally launched during a ground test Sunday, its company Space Pioneer said in a statement.

The crash happened when the first stage of the Tianlong-3 rocket detached from its launch pad during a test, due to structural failure. It landed in a hilly area of the city of Gongyi in central China.

“Due to the structural failure of the connection between the rocket body and the test platform, the first-stage rocket was separated from the launch pad,” Space Pioneer, also known as Beijing Tianbing Technology, said.

“After liftoff, the onboard computer was automatically shut down, and the rocket fell into the deep mountains 1.5 kilometers [0.9 miles] southwest of the test platform. The rocket body fell into the mountain and disintegrated.”

There were no injuries as a result of the crash, the company said, as people in the area were evacuated in advance of the rocket test.

Space Pioneer, a leading company in the commercial rocket sphere, specializes in liquid-propellant rockets.

In April 2023, it successfully launched its Tianlong-2 rocket, making the company China’s first commercial launch operator to send a liquid carrier rocket into space and successfully enter orbit, according to state media.

The accident comes just days after China’s Chang’e-6 lunar module returned to Earth from space, where it collected the first ever samples from the far side of the moon.

Military horses run loose again in central London

Horses galloping through central London

Military horses have broken free and run loose through central London for the second time since April.

Three horses from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment “became loose from their riders” while six were exercising on Monday morning, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

All horses were recovered “swiftly and safely” and returned to Hyde Park Barracks by the Army and Metropolitan Police by 09:55 BST, with one receiving minor injuries. No soldiers were injured.

Four other military horses were spooked by noise from a building site in Belgravia on 24 April and fled through the city, with some hitting vehicles including a double-decker bus.

The latest incident happened when the lead horse, which was being led rather than ridden, became loose after being spooked by a London bus.

Two riders were then unseated from their horses, who also became loose.

Part of the incident was captured on dashcam footage by a black cab driver.

The animals bolted from Seville Street to South Eaton Place, where one horse was recovered. Two horses continued to Vauxhall Bridge via Belgrave Road before being stopped.

None of the three horses were involved in the previous bolting incident from 24 April, the MoD added.

Biden’s family urges him to stay in White House race

President Joe Biden and family

Democratic President Joe Biden’s family has urged him to ignore calls to step aside following his disastrous debate against Republican Donald Trump.

He spent Sunday with relatives at a presidential retreat where they encouraged him to keep fighting, according to the BBC’s US partner CBS News.

Anxiety has gripped sections of his party following a rambling and at times incoherent performance in Atlanta.

Polls since then suggest concerns about his age – he is 81 – have increased.

A CBS News/YouGov poll released on Sunday indicated that 72% of registered Democratic voters believe the president does not have the mental and cognitive health to serve as president. Nearly half said he should step aside.

But the message from his campaign team and his family is that he remains the party’s best hope to defeat Trump.

The family gathering at Camp David in Maryland had been previously scheduled as a photoshoot by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz. Mr Biden’s wife Jill, his children and grandchildren were among those present.

Jill Biden told Vogue magazine in a phone call from Camp David that they “will not let those 90 minutes define the four years he’s been president”.

They would continue fighting, she said, adding that her husband “will always do what’s best for the country”.

The encouragement of the family to stay the course was first reported by the New York Times and later confirmed by CBS News. Some relatives have reportedly blamed his poor performance on over-preparation by his aides. A person close to Jill Biden told CBS she was not among those criticising his team.

Concerns about the age of both candidates – Mr Biden is only three years older than Trump who is 78 – were present before Thursday’s debate.

But Mr Biden’s weak voice and muddled answers renewed concerns about his candidacy and left some calling for him to step aside.

Rocket barrage launched at Israel as battle rages in Gaza City

0
Gaza City's Shejaiya district

Israel’s military says Palestinian armed groups in Gaza have launched about 20 rockets towards Israeli border communities – the heaviest such attack in months.

A number of the projectiles were intercepted and others landed inside southern Israel, but no injuries were reported. The military said it responded with artillery fire.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) said it launched the barrage in response to Israeli “crimes”.

It came as fierce fighting continued for a fifth day in Shejaiya in the north of Gaza and an Israeli soldier was killed in the southern Rafah area.

On Sunday, Israel’s prime minister said its troops were engaged in a “difficult fight” across the entire Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

More than 37,900 people have been killed in Gaza since then, including 23 over the past 24 hours, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry. On Monday morning, sirens sounded in Israeli communities near the Gaza border fence, many of which have been evacuated since the 7 October attack.

The Eshkol Regional Council later reported that 18 rockets were launched towards areas it governs, according to the Jerusalem Post. Most landed in open areas, but one fell “in the area of Kibbutz Holit’s fence”, it said. Another rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system, it added.

The Times of Israel reported that Monday’s barrage was the largest from Gaza since January, when at least 25 rockets were launched towards the city of Netivot.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the latest rocket-fire had come from the southern Khan Younis area and that its artillery had struck the sources.

Habits That Are Bad For Your Heart

0
  1. You Bank on Your Workout

Do you exercise? That’s great. But if you sit down for most of the rest of your day, that’s a problem. You need to be active all day long. Little bursts count. If you have a desk job, take a short walk every hour to boost your circulation, even if it’s just to your break room and back. Binge-watching your favorite show? Get up and dance, or do push-ups during the commercials.

  1. You Say ‘I’m Too Young’

Don’t wait to work on keeping your heart healthy. Exercise, eat a healthy diet, and know your numbers — blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.  The ideal time to do your heart a favor is now.

  1. One Drink Too Many

For most people, moderate drinking (one a day for women, up to two daily for men) is OK. A daily drink may even have some benefits for the heart. But more than that can raise levels of certain fats in the blood, and raise blood pressure, too. That’s especially true if you have several drinks at a time. So stick to your daily limit.

  1. You Dis a Good-for-You Diet

You may think it’s going to be all oat bran, all the time. Surprise! There’s no reason for your food to be bland and boring. A Mediterranean-style diet has delicious foods like olive oil, nuts, fruit, whole grains, fish, lean protein, and red wine. It helps keep your heart healthy, thanks to the “good” fats, fiber, and nutrients. Plus, you’ll actually want to stick to this diet because it tastes so good!

  1. You Don’t Know Your Numbers

Pop quiz: What’s your cholesterol level? How about your blood pressure? No clue? That’s risky. They could be too high without you knowing. (You could feel just fine and have high cholesterol or high blood pressure.) So protect yourself. Starting at age 20, make sure you see your doctor regularly and create a plan to check and track your numbers.

  1. Waist Not

Belly fat is particularly bad for your heart. So get your tape measure and size up the inches around your waist. It’s a red flag if it’s more than 35 inches around for women or 40 inches for men. Need to slim down? Take it step by step. Even losing a small amount of weight is good for your heart.

  1. You Ignore Your Blues

When you feel low, it’s hard to do things that are good for you, like exercise. If you have felt down for more than a few weeks, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. Talk therapy, exercise, and medication (if needed) can improve your mood so you have more energy to take care of yourself.

  1. You Blow Off Secondhand Smoke

Someone else’s smoke could hurt your heart and blood vessels. You need to avoid it. If you spend a lot of time with someone who isn’t ready to quit smoking, insist that they at least not smoke around you, whether it’s at home, work, or in your car.  Your tough love may be the nudge they need to kick the habit, which will be good for both of you.

Feature: For Presidential Candidate and Running Mate, NPP Wins the Ethnic Battle

0
Feature

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), would use the least opportunity to taunt the New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling it an ethnic-bias party, which does not regard Northerners and Muslims for presidential candidates.

This made the NPP look bad in the eyes of most Ghanaians, especially the Northerners and Muslims. But the records state otherwise.

In the 1992 General Elections, the NPP presented an Akan Christian as flag bearer and a Northerner Muslim as running mate. The NDC presented, an all-Christian Ewe and Fante as flag bearer and running mate. Both were Southerners. The NDC won the election and the presidency was all Christians and Southerners.

In 1996, the NPP presented an Akan/Asante Christian as presidential candidate and due to the electoral alliance with the Convention People’s Party (CPP), it had the Nkrumaist party leader, a Fante Christian as running mate. The NDC presented, an Ewe as flag bearer and again a Fante as running mate, both were Christians.  The NDC won again and the presidency was all Christians and Southerners.

In 2000, the NPP presented an Akan/Asante Christian as presidential candidate with a Northerner Muslim as running mate. And the NDC presented an Akan Christian as presidential candidate with a Christian Northerner as running mate. The NPP won and for the first time, and the presidency was Christian and Muslim.

In 2004, the NPP presented the same team and won re-election, while the NDC put up the Akan Christian as presidential candidate and for the first time, a Northerner Muslim as running mate.

In 2008, the NPP presented an Akan Christian as presidential candidate and Northerner Muslim as running mate. The NDC presented, an Akan Christian as flag bearer and a Christian Northerner as running mate. The NDC won the elections and for the first time a Northerner entered the presidency on NDC’s ticket. But it was still an all-Christian presidency.

In 2012, the NPP presented the same team as it did in 2008 and as a result of the demise of president Atta Mills, the NDC presented vice president John Mahama, the Northerner Christian as presidential candidate and an Akan Christian Amissah Arthur as running mate. The NDC won the elections and the presidency was again an all-Christian affair.

In 2016, the NPP once again presented the Southern Christian/Northern Muslim team of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia and won the election to bring back the Christian/Muslim mix in the presidency. The NDC put up John Mahama and Amissah Arthur, an all-Christian mix.

In 2020, the NPP put up the same team and won re-election, The NDC came up with John Mahama as presidential candidate and another Christian, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a Fante, as running mate.

The NDC raised its taunting of NPP to a higher level long before the presidential primaries for 2024, in attempts to convince all Ghanaians that the ruling party was anti-Muslims and would never field a Muslim presidential candidate.

Significantly, for the 2024 General Elections, the NPP has come out with a Northerner Muslim as presidential candidate in the person of vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia. And he settled for an Akan/Asante Christian, as running mate in the person of Matthew Opoku Prempeh. The NDC came out with the same John/Jane ticket, an all-Christian affair.

With the inclusion of the 2024 General Elections, fifteen Ghanaians, namely Adu-Boahen, Roland Alhassan, Jerry Rawlings, Nkensen Arkaah, J.A. Kufuor, AluiMahama, JEA Mills, Martin Amidu, Muhammed Mumuni, John Mahama, Nana Addo, Mahamudu Bawumia, Amissah Arthur, Jane Opoku Agyemang and Matthew Prempeh, have appeared on presidential/running mate tickets for their parties. The highest entrants are Bawumia and John Mahama, each appearing five times.

Looking at the eight past General Elections and the next one, the records are in favour of the NPP who have presented for ten times, Christians and for eight times Muslims on the presidential/running mate tickets. The Christians are Southerners and all the Muslims are Northerners. The NDC will by 2024, present seventeen Christians, seventeen times, including two Northerners and only one Muslim on the presidential tickets.

The NPP strongholds are in the Akan regions, most especially in Ashanti region, which is the only region which had consistently voted for the NPP since 1992. So, it is natural that the NPP should present Akan flag bearers.

The NDC on the other hand has stronghold bases in the North and Volta regions and almost the entire Muslim communities. Yet, apart from 2004, the party never put a Muslim on the presidential/running mate ticket. And the Voltarians seem to becoming insignificant in the NDC so far as presidential/running mate tickets are concern, after appearing on the presidential ballot in 1992 and 1996.

The question is, if John Atta Mills had not died, would the NDC put vice president John Mahama on the presidential ballot in 2016? With the clout around him, the NDC could not dare to choose any other person for 2012 and since then, as the most powerful person in the NDC, that party could not risk rejecting him.

Looking at NDC presidential primaries, the party had all the opportunity to reward the Northerners for their strong love and dedication towards the party in the 2006 presidential primaries, when a Northerner and Muslim, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu contested three Akans. He placed third amassing 137 votes or 8.2% of the 1,673 total votes cast. Why the NDC dumped the Muslim could explain its inner true feelings about people of that religion.

Looking at the NPP presidential primaries since 1992, there were three occasions that a Muslim contested, in 1998 when Malik Alhassan Yakubu contested and placed fifth out of six contestants; in 2007, when Vice President Aliu Mahama contested and placed third out of seventeen contestants and in 2023, when the Northerner and Muslim, Mahamudu Bawumia contested and won the primaries to become the first of his kind to be flag bearer for the NPP.

This eighth parliament saw the NDC back in opposition. It presented a strong leadership of five MPs, led by Muslims, namely Haruna Iddrisu as minority leader and Muntaka Mubarak as minority chief whip. These two gentlemen were doing wonderful job for the opposition, when all of a sudden, in January 2023, the NDC remove these Muslims and dumped them into the backbench. Today, the NDC leadership in Parliament as all Christians. And yet, the NDC wants to convince Ghanaians that it has the Muslims at heart.

One region which has never appeared on any of the NDC presidential tickets, even though it is the region which supplies the highest number of presidential votes for that party, is the Ashanti region. Asantes are never regarded in the NDC and so, are never allowed anywhere near the presidential/running mate ticket, no matter the sacrifices made by very good Asantes like Kojo Bonsu and Kwabena Duffuor. In the recent NDC presidential primaries, Kwabena Duffuor was rudely pushed out of line.

The NPP is not an ungrateful party as the NDC. Having been established that Ashanti region is the stronghold of the party, the party never misses out putting Asantes in high places whenever the opportunity comes. Thrice, the party had an Asante holding its flag in presidential elections and that was H.E. J.A. Kufuor. Prof. AduBoahen, the party’s first flag bearer was an Akyem with ancestral roots in Juaben, Ashanti.

And for the 2024 General Elections, the NPP has on its presidential ticket, an Asante as running mate, in the person of Matthew Opoku Prempeh. This Asante/Northern Muslim union can be traced back to the days of the United Party (UP), the roots of the NPP.

The UP was made of Asante-based National Liberation Movement (NLM), the Northern-based Northern People’s Party (NPP), the Muslim Association Party, the two Ewe based parties, the Togoland Congress and Anlo Youth Association and the Ga based Ga Shifimokpee.

Clearly looking at the NPP, even though the union within the UP was broken by Nkrumah and further damaged by socialists like Rawlings, making majority of Ewes, Gas, Northerners and Muslims not to be fond of the NPP, the party has always opened its arms to embrace the minority, including Muslims and Northerners.

Can the NDC today, show such love to Muslims and Northerners? After what it just did by removing the two most dynamic Muslims in the party, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu and Hon Muntaka Mubarak from its 2024 National Campaign Team, the party’s intentions against Muslims are now open secret. The NPP, on the other hand, has continued to openly show love to Northerners and Muslims, even though, these two groups have not realized that, to reciprocate the gesture.

And now what are all these ugly noises coming from Ashanti NPP after Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) was made running-mate? Some group of party executives are saying, Napo campaigned seriously against the regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi) during the recent regional executive elections and so they will not campaign for the party, with Napo as running mate.

What do they say about Wontumi, who went about in 2019/2020 making sure some MPs lost in the primaries? Fomena is one striking example, where the sitting MP, Andrew Asiamah Amoako was made to lose the primaries in an act of broad daylight robbery, and had to go independent to secure his seat. If Wontumi could decide who is fit or not fit to stand for parliamentary elections, what is wrong if another person decides he is not fit to be chairman of the party in the region?

Then comes Hon. Appiah Kubi, who is saying he has issues with Napo and so he does not support him being the running mate. What a shame!

Unfortunately, it is the majority which decides in a democracy, for if it is the minority, then during the NPP 2007 presidential primaries, Arthur Kennedy who secured one vote would have been the presidential candidate.

And between the NPP and the NDC, the NPP has won the ethnic battle.

Congratulations Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for this one important higher step in your political career. May God bless you and protect you in your new post.
