The wooden classroom

A renowned Ghanaian blogger, Augustus Koranteng Kyei, is seeking help to construct a school building for pupils of the Saaman Kindergarten in the Central Region.

The uncompleted project

He is pleading with non-governmental organisations, philanthropists and others in a capable position to help put up a befitting classroom for the pupils, who study in a dilapidated wooden structure.

Known in the new media space as Kobby Kyei, the online journalist has dedicated his platform to helping the less privileged in communities across the country have access to basic amenities, including good drinking water.

After recently embarking on a rigorous campaign that educated drivers and pedestrians about the importance of zebra crossing, especially in the cities of the country, Kobby Kyei has identified the suffering of the pupils of Saaman KG 1 and 2.

Located in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abream (KEEA) district, the wooden structure, which is not fit for purpose, serves as the classroom for both KGs one and two.

With the support of the first runner-up of 2023 Ghana’s Most Beautiful, Naa Ayeley, Kobby Kyei and his team visited the school to get first-hand information on the plight of the pupils.

The structure

The video documentary he shared showed the pupils sitting in a not-completely covered wooden structure that was in bad condition.

“Something that I have observed here is that the pupils are in school, but only KG 2 has a desk to put their books on,” Kobby Kyei narrated.

The chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association also called for help, stating that poor infrastructure has been their major problem.

Professor Jinapor with one of the facilitators

The Director General for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor has announced that the government was ready to facilitate the teaching and learning of German Language in the country.

This, he explained, could be done by creating an enabling environment and facilitating the establishment of the right institutions with the right resources for many Ghanaians to develop an interest in the teaching of the language, as he recounted the numerous benefits of understanding the German language.

Prof. Jinapor announced this when he hosted the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, Madam Sivine Jansen, in Accra.

The delegation’s visit to the GTEC was aimed at deepening the already existing ties between the Embassy and GTEC and also discussing moves to speed up the acquisition of accreditation to start a Bachelor of Art programme in the German Language at the University of Education of Winneba.

Foreign Language Benefits

The Director General mentioned some of the benefits of learning the German language as helping many Ghanaian students to go and study in the country, helping many people travel to do business with ease in Germany, promote the development of tourism between the two nations among others.

Prof. Jinapor, however, urged the Embassy to speed up effort towards the attainment of the right infrastructure, personnel with the requisite teaching skills, as well as the appropriate teaching and learning resources that would promote the teaching and learning of the language in the country.

He praised the German Government for its efforts towards poverty reduction and national development as a whole.

Optimistic

The Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, Madam Sivine Jansen, in her address was upbeat that everything possible was being done to ensure that many Ghanaians have the opportunity of studying the German Language in the country.

She mentioned of plans to extend the teaching and learning of the German language in all Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the country, to create an opportunity for them to have the chance of travel to Germany for further studies or work in various industries and vice versa.

The Deputy Head of Mission stated that everything possible was being done to meet all the requirements for the accreditation process for the running of the Bachelor’s course at Winneba.

Background

The University of Education Winneba has since 2005 been teaching German language to students pursuing French as their first language and German as a second language.

It is based on this that the German Embassy is working very hard to ensure that some Ghanaian students also have the opportunity to study German for a Bachelor’s degree.

GALOP intervention has improved learning outcomes -Deputy Minister

Mr Nti Fordjour speaking to the media after the tour

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister for Education, has expressed satisfaction with the steady improvements in learning outcomes of targeted schools, following the rollout of the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) in basic schools.

The Deputy Minister said since the introduction of the project in 2020, there has been improvement in learning outcomes with the excellent skills exhibited by the teachers to keep the pupils motivated in learning.

Mr Nti Fordjour touring one of the schools

Rev Fordjour said this when he led a delegation from the Ministry of Education to monitor the implementation of GALOP, in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

The team visited Ahwerase Presby Primary and Kindergarten School and Konkonuru Basic School in the Akwapim South district in the Eastern Region.

In the Greater Accra Region, the team visited ICODEHS Islamic Basic School and St. Francis of Assisi Basic School in the Adentan Municipality.

Under the GALOP initiative, teachers have been trained in differentiated learning and targeted instruction, which include teaching children reading and numeracy skills at their individual levels and the preparation of learning materials.

Under GALOP, the government, in 2021, implemented the National Standardised Test for Primary Four Learners to generate data on the performance of pupils in Literacy and Numeracy. The exercise was again conducted in 2022 for Primary Two and Primary Four Learners.

Rev Fordjour said the government was implementing the project to ensure that over 10,000 basic schools, with the lowest performance in the country, were transformed.

“We are excited about what we have seen so far. Teachers are very confident, they are highly motivated, you go to the classrooms even the setup and seating arrangements have changed to foster collaboration and teamwork.

“They have identified their learners based on their learning capabilities and addressed them accordingly,” he said, adding “This is the kind of effective teaching that is taking place. It shows that 21st-century learning is taking place where core competencies of critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving are being imbibed by our learners.

“Schools are implementing their School Performance Improvement Plans (SPIP) with fidelity and funding critical needs of the school with the learning grants from GALOP.”

Ms Anna Bjerde, Managing Director, in Charge of World Bank Operations, visited Ghana in July 2023 to monitor the implementation of GALOP in selected schools.

She was impressed with the strong engagement between the teachers and learners, which culminated in good reading and comprehension among the pupils.

She said, “Through the GALOP initiative, Ghana is empowering teachers with a structured programme, providing them with lesson plans, learning materials and ongoing skills-based coaching.

“GALOP has a strong focus on learning outcomes, complementing efforts to improve access, equity, and governance in the education sector,” she said.

Madam Elizabeth Afriyie, Municipal Director of Education, Akuapem South, said the project had led to improvements in pupils’ performance in numeracy and literacy.

Madam Gifty Mussey, Municipal Director of Education of Adentan, said the project had built the confidence of learners to actively participate in the teaching and learning process.

Present at the monitoring were Madam Angela Affran, Acting Coordinator, GALOP, Nana Hagan, Deputy Director in Charge of Improvement and Accountability, GALOP, and Mr. Setor Agubretu, Technical Assistant, GALOP.

GALOP is a project funded by the World Bank, the Global Partnership for Education and the Education Outcomes Fund.

The project objective is to improve the quality of education in low-performing basic education schools and strengthen education sector equity and accountability in Ghana.

GALOP is a result-based financing project in which funds are disbursed for continuous implementation of the project based on the achievement of Performance Based Conditions and Indicators.

Diddy returns key to New York City in response to video of him attacking singer Cassie

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has returned his key to New York City after a request from Mayor Eric Adams in response to the release of a video showing the music mogul attacking R&B singer Cassie, officials said Saturday.

The mayor’s office said Combs returned the key after Adams sent letters to the embattled musician’s offices in New York and California on June 4 rescinding the key and asking for it to be sent back to City Hall. The city received the key June 10.

In his letter, Adams wrote he was “deeply disturbed” by the attack, adding “I strongly condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence.”

Combs’ career has been derailed by numerous accusations of sexual abuse, as well as a federal criminal sex-trafficking investigation that led to raids of Combs’ mansions in Los Angeles and Miami.

In May, CNN aired security video of Combs attacking Cassie in a hotel hallway in Los Angeles in 2016. Combs has said he is “truly sorry” for the attack on Cassie and called his actions “inexcusable.” Cassie, whose legal name is Cassandra Ventura, sued Combs last year, setting off a wave of increased scrutiny on Combs. That case was settled a day after it was filed.

Adams awarded Combs with the key at a ceremony last year that coincided with the release of a new album.

Howard University this month rescinded an honorary degree awarded to Combs and ended a scholarship program in his name following the release of the video involving Cassie.

Combs, founder of Bad Boy Records, is one of the most influential hip-hop producers and executives in the last three decades, turning musical success into a business empire.

An email sent to a representative listed online for Combs was not immediately returned.

“…forgive me…” – Great Ampong finally renders an apology to Daddy Lumba after years of beefing

Great-Ampong and Daddy Lumba

Ghanaian gospel artist Isiah Kwadwo ‘Great’ Ampong has recently been ordained as a reverend minister. The ordination ceremony took place on Sunday, June 17, 2024, during his visit to Divine Word Ministries International in the USA.

This ministry is led by Archbishop Kofi Adonteng Boateng, who played a significant role in Ampong’s ordination.

Archbishop Kofi Adonteng Boateng explained that the decision to ordain Ampong was made in recognition of his extensive work as a gospel advocate through his music.

Ampong’s dedication to spreading the gospel message through his songs has had a significant impact on many, making him a deserving candidate for this new role.

As part of the ordination process, Great Ampong was required to seek forgiveness from the Lord and from those he had wronged over the years.

This included addressing his longstanding feud with highlife legend Daddy Lumba, which had been a notable conflict in his life.

Ampong expressed his regret for any actions he took during his feud with Daddy Lumba that may have offended him.

He acknowledged that emotions can lead to regrettable actions and sought forgiveness for any such incidents. “The human heart acts differently in times of anger. What he did to me, which I was not happy about—if I went below the belt and said something that offended him—I pray that God forgives me and forgives him as well,” Ampong stated.

He further added, “Whatever he also did to me, for which I held pain from 2015 to today, I stand before Archbishop Adonteng Boateng and forgive; I am letting go in the name of God.” This public declaration of forgiveness marked a significant step in healing old wounds and moving forward with a clear conscience.

Ampong also took the opportunity to apologize to anyone else he might have offended over the years.

This act of seeking forgiveness was an essential part of his preparation for becoming a reverend minister, demonstrating his commitment to living a life of integrity and reconciliation.

During the ordination ceremony, Archbishop Kofi Adonteng Boateng offered a heartfelt prayer for Ampong, asking for divine blessings and the expansion of his ministry. “As I place my hands on you, I put a new cloth of God, the grace of God, on you. Grace has fallen on you, power has been bestowed upon you, and even your enemies will come to love you. Your music is going to be renewed and will travel across the world,” the Archbishop prayed.

To officially mark this significant milestone, Great Ampong was robed with a pastoral garment.

Joe Mettle shares how he reloaded bank accounts within 24 hours after emptying them for event

Joe Mettle

Gospel Artiste, Joe Mettle has disclosed how he replenished his bank account after completely emptying it to organise one of the editions of his annual Praise Reloaded concert.

The musician said he did it with faith, believing that the gesture would bring countless blessings, which manifested within twenty-four hours.

Joe Mettle revealed this in an interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show on Friday.

“One of the years, I emptied every account I have everywhere; we did the event, and it was a blessing. Because I believe first in God and the vision He’s given me, I emptied everything; I spoke to my wife and gave them what they would need for home and gave out everything else.

Right after the event on that Sunday, I left for the US on Monday, and around that time, we hadn’t even finished with the payment. I got there, and there was an event that wasn’t part of my itinerary for that tour, but the pastor said, why won’t I come?”

“But I told him I’m going for a wedding, and he asked when I would be back after the wedding. I told him my ticket would be taking me somewhere else afterwards, but he said I should forget about that ticket. They bought me a new ticket, had me go to the wedding, fly back down, and do the service.

After that, what they blessed me with was more than enough to clear all the others and still have something in my account. So, immediately after we finished the service, I sent the rest of the money to the guys,” he narrated to the host, Roselyn Felli.

Others thought he sold tickets to balance the expenses incurred. But the ‘Bo Noo Ni’ hit singer said he does not make any profit from ticket sales.

The brief experience multiplied his belief that God blesses those who are willing to give to impact others with everything He has entrusted to them.

“The question is if God can trust you with it. If you hold on to it, nothing more will come. But if you learn to give back to Him what He’s given to you, more will come.”

The 2017 VGMA Artiste of the Year is yet again looking forward to filling the forty-thousand-seated Accra Sports Stadium with the 2024 edition of his Praise Reloaded for free.

The 12th edition of Praise Reloaded is set to take place on June 30, 2024. Themed ‘The Holy Spirit Encounter’, the event will feature an all-star lineup of gospel ministers, including MOG, Ohemaa Mercy, Pastor Isaiah, Nathaniel Bassey, Sunmisola Agbebi, Kofi Peprah, Luigi, Enuonyam, Team Eternity Ghana, and Jumbo Aniebiet.

Malaysia wants to join BRICS

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

Malaysia wants to join the BRICS grouping of emerging economies, the Southeast Asian country’s leader has said.

In an interview with Chinese media outlet Guancha, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said his government would soon begin the process of joining the bloc, once it had received feedback from South Africa – the current BRICS chair – to its expression of interest.

“We have made our policy clear and we have made our decision. We will start the formal process soon. As far as the Global South is concerned, we are fully supportive,” Anwar said, according to the Shanghai-based outlet.

Anwar also backed comments by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticising the dominance of the US dollar in international trade.

“Why? A currency that is completely outside the trade system of the two countries and is irrelevant in terms of economic activities in the country, has become dominant, purely because it is used as an international currency.”

Founded in 2006, the grouping was originally known as BRIC, and comprised Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined in 2010, and the grouping came to be known as BRICS.

In January 2024, the bloc expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

UK’s richest family on trial for human trafficking

0
Ajay Hinduja (L) and his wife Namrata arrive with their lawyer

The family own a villa in Geneva’s wealthy neighbourhood of Cologny, and the charges against them all relate to their practice of importing servants from India to look after their children and household.

It’s alleged that Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, together with their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, confiscated staff passports, paid them as little as $8 (£7) for 18-hour days, and allowed them little freedom to leave the house.

Although a financial settlement over exploitation was reached last week, the Hindujas remain on trial for trafficking, which is a serious criminal offence in Switzerland. They deny the charges.

This week in court, one of Geneva’s most famous prosecutors, Yves Bertossa, compared the almost $10,000 a year he claimed the family had spent on their dog, to the daily amount they were allegedly paying their servants.

The Hinduja family’s lawyers did not specifically deny the allegations of low wages, but said they must be viewed in context – noting that the staff were also receiving accommodation and food.

The charge of long hours was also disputed, with one defence lawyer arguing that watching a film with the Hinduja children could not really be classed as work.

Some former servants testified for the Hindujas, describing them as a friendly family who treated their servants with dignity.

But the allegations that servants’ passports were confiscated, and that they could not even leave the house without permission, are serious, because they could be judged as human trafficking.

Mr Bertossa is calling for prison terms, and millions of dollars in compensation as well as legal fees.
