The first cohort of beneficiaries of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme graduated after successfully completing their training.

The event, which took place on Thursday, June 20, 2024 amid pomp and pageantry, marked a significant milestone in the lives of 600 young women, who have been equipped with valuable vocational skills.

The training covered various areas, including soap and detergent making, baking, pedicure and manicure, beading, décor and make-up artistry.

Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), delivered a speech, highlighting the achievements of the graduates and the importance of the programme.

He began by acknowledging the distinguished guests, political appointees and dignitaries present.

“Today marks a significant milestone in the entrepreneurship journey of our young women as we celebrate their graduation from the Kayayei Skills Empowerment Programme. We are witnessing not just a graduation but a dawn of new possibilities and the promise of a brighter future for our beneficiaries,” Mr. Nkansah stated.

The Kayayei Empowerment Programme is a visionary project initiated by the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, aimed at empowering young women often marginalised in society.

Mr. Nkansah commended the Vice President for his dedication to the cause. “His zeal to see to the empowerment of our Kayayei ladies deserves commendation. A round of applause for H.E,” he said, leading the audience to show their appreciation.

The graduates demonstrated exceptional dedication and resilience throughout their training, a journey that not only provided them with vocational skills but also helped them reclaim their dignity and steer away from the perils of street life.

“They have exceeded our expectations with their performance during the training. A round of applause for our sisters,” Mr. Nkansah applauded.

In total, 600 young women were trained in six specialised skill areas. One hundred and seventy were trained in soap and detergent making, accounting for 28% of the cohort. Baking skills were acquired by 172 participants, making up 29% of the group.

Beads and jewelry making was chosen by 47 women, representing 8% of the trainees. Seventeen participants or 3% focused on décor, while 46 women or 8% were trained in pedicure and manicure.

Finally, 148 participants, constituting 24% of the cohort, specialised in make-p artistry. As part of the ceremony, the graduates received starter packs, providing them with the basic tools needed to start their own businesses in their respective trades.

“Dear beneficiaries, as you receive your certificates and starter packs, remember that this is just the beginning of your entrepreneurship journey.

“With the skills you have acquired, you have the power to shape your destiny and inspire others with your stories of resilience,” Mr. Nkansah encouraged.

Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Nkansah thanked all those who contributed to the success of the programme.

“We are grateful to our dedicated trainers, our colleagues from the office of the Vice President, our sister agencies on the project, GEA, YEA, GETFUND, and CTVET, our coordinators, and all those who believed in the potential of these young women. Our utmost thanks go to our bosses H.E. The President and H.E. the Vice President whose vision made this possible,” he said.

The training programme will continue throughout the year, with preparations underway to admit the next cohort of beneficiaries.

Additionally, Mr. Nkansah announced that earlier in the day, they fulfilled their promise to provide each beneficiary with a GHC1000 stipend, paying the outstanding GHC500 in addition to the initial GHC500 given at the beginning of the training.

To the graduates, Mr. Nkansah assured that this is not the end of their engagement with NEIP. “We will be visiting you to see how well you are doing in your chosen trade areas. Congratulations to you all once again, and we wish you the very best of luck,” he concluded.

Clooney and Roberts help Biden raise $30 million-plus at a star-studded Hollywood gala

President Joe Biden

Some of Hollywood’s brightest stars headlined a fundraiser for President Joe Biden that took in a record $30 million-plus for a Democratic candidate, according to his campaign, in hopes of energising would-be supporters for a White House contest they said may rank among the most consequential in U.S. history.

George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Barbra Streisand were among those who took the stage at the 7,100-seat Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel interviewed Biden and former President Barack Obama, who both stressed the need to defeat former President Donald Trump in a race that’s expected to be exceedingly close.

During more than half an hour of discussion, Kimmel asked if the country was suffering from amnesia about the presumptive Republican nominee, to which Biden responded, “All we gotta do is remember what it was like” when Trump was in the White House.

Luminaries from the entertainment world have increasingly lined up to help Biden’s campaign, and just how important the event was to his reelection bid could be seen in Biden’s decision to fly through the night across nine time zones, from the G7 summit in southern Italy to Southern California, to attend.

He also missed a summit in Switzerland about ways to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, instead dispatching Vice President Kamala Harris who made a whirlwind trip of her own to represent the United States there, a stark reminder of the delicate balance between geopolitics and Biden’s bid to win a second term.

Further laying bare the political implications were police in riot gear outside the theater. A group of protesters angry about the Biden’s administration’s handling of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza demonstrated nearby.

The fundraiser included singing by Jack Black and Sheryl Lee Ralph, and actors Kathryn Hahn and Jason Bateman introduced Kimmel, who himself introduced Biden and Obama. The comedian deadpanned, “I was told I was getting introduced by Batman, not Bateman.”

Obama, speaking about the Supreme Court, added that “hopefully we have learned our lesson, because these elections matter in very concrete ways.”

Afua Asantewaa explains why she wants to attempt sing-a-thon record again

Afua Asantewaa's medical team explains why she ended sing-a-thon after 126 hours

Afua Asantewaa, the Ghanaian singer who previously aimed for the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon, has announced her intention to make another attempt.

She revealed that she has been contemplating a second attempt for some time since her initial sing-a-thon did not succeed and has now resolved to try again.

Comparing her experience to that of presidential candidates who persist despite setbacks, she remains determined to continue until she achieves success.

During an interview with GhOne TV, the aspiring sing-a-thon participant expressed that she has learned from her previous attempt and is committed to bringing honour to Ghana.

“I have been reflecting a lot, and I believe that the record attempts I undertook are similar to the Black Stars participating in a World Cup or a presidential candidate running for office. I have seen presidential candidates who have not won but continue to try. So, if I attempted the world record and was not successful, it doesn’t mean I should give up.

“I believe that a lot has been learned. We only had two weeks to prepare for our attempt last year, December 2023. Now, we have several months ahead to prepare properly, achieve success, and continue to make Ghana proud. Even if we fail, let’s still put Ghana on the map,” she said.

Afua Asantewaa’s First Sing-a-thon Attempt

On December 24, Asantewaa set out to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon.

She captured the attention of many in Ghana by singing for 126 hours and 52 minutes. Initially planning to finish on December 27, she decided, after consulting with her team, to sing continuously for five days.

The event, held at Akwaaba Village in Accra near the Kotoka International Airport, drew thousands of supporters eager to witness history.

A long list of showbiz personalities, including Nana Ama McBrown, Kwabena Kwabena, Efya, Sista Afia, Afronitaa, Delay, Cina Soul, Clemento Suarez, Akuapem Poloo, Lawyer Nti, Piesie Esther, and OB Amponsah, also showed up to demonstrate their collective support.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with people consistently applauding and encouraging her to continue her impressive endeavour.

Why Asantewaa was Disqualified

In response to an email from JoyFM’s Kwame Dadzie inquiring about the disqualification, it was revealed that Afua Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon attempt was unsuccessful due to guidelines regarding rest break timings not being followed.

In a statement by the PR Executive for the Guinness World Records, Alina Polianskaya, it was clarified that these are standard rules that could not have been overlooked.

“Afua Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon attempt was not successful due to guidelines around rest break timings not being met. These rules are standard across all of our ‘longest marathon’ records. We’ve seen how inspirational it has been for her fans…We wish Afua the best of luck with any future record attempts,” the statement read.

But according to her, anything worth doing is worth doing over and over again.

Liha Miller and Patapaa

Musician, Justice Amoah, popularly known as Patapaa has disclosed that he never loved his ex-wife, Liha Miller.

Rather, she was in love with him and made him aware of her feelings for him and they settled to build a life.

He says Liha Miller tapped into his blessing to become famous hence her decision to infuriate him all the time in order to be in the news.

“My blessings are what Liha tapped into to become famous so anytime she gets the opportunity she wants to infuriate me so that I will talk back and get her in the trends. I don’t love her and I never proposed love to her,” he said.

The one-corner hitmaker said he has been silent about their marital issues even though Liha takes every opportunity to tell the world their marriage failed.

“I am silent on the issue because we signed the marriage in court and so I cannot disrespect the judges who joined us in Holy matrimony. That is why I don’t talk about it but she has disrespected our union by going naked and being seen with other men. If I was the one who was engaged in that she would have even arrested me,” he said on Accra-based Angel Television.

It will be remembered that Liha Miller in an interview disclosed that she had ended the marriage between her and Patapaa.

She indicated that the marriage did not last past few months after their wedding and that she is working with the family of Patapaa to quash the marriage.

Kim pledges ‘full support’ for Russia in war against Ukraine

Kim Jong Un and Putin

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has promised “full support and solidarity” for Russia’s war in Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin made his first visit to Pyongyang in 24 years and said the two countries were fighting the “hegemonic and imperialist policy” of the United States and its allies.

Relations between the two countries have grown closer since Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine amid rising concern that Pyongyang is providing Russia with weapons in return for Russian technological expertise.

Russia and North Korea have denied arms transfers but have promised to strengthen military ties.

Putin on Wednesday thanked Kim for “unwavering” support on Ukraine, and the two announced a new comprehensive strategic partnership treaty although no details of its contents were released. Earlier this week, the Kremlin said the pact would replace previous bilateral documents and declarations signed in 1961, 2000 and 2001.

Speaking after his meeting with Kim, Putin said the new agreement was defensive in nature and included a promise of “mutual assistance” if either side were attacked, Russian news agencies reported. The Russian president said it would take ties to a “new level”.

At least 34 die in India after drinking toxic alcohol

The incident took place in Kallakuruchi district of Tamil Nadu state

At least 34 people have died after consuming toxic bootleg alcohol in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, officials said.

The incident took place in Kallakuruchi district where several residents fell ill after consuming the liquor on Tuesday night.

At least 80 people are being treated in hospitals for illnesses such as excessive diarrhoea and officials say the death toll could rise further.

Two people have been arrested so far and a wider investigation is underway.

Authorities have also suspended a senior police official and ten members of the state’s prohibition enforcement wing – which overseas the smuggling of illicit alcohol in the state – for negligence.

Dozens of people die in India each year after drinking bootleg alcohol from backstreet distilleries.

Bootleggers often add methanol – a highly toxic form of alcohol sometimes used as an anti-freeze – to their mixture to increase its strength.

If ingested in even small quantities, methanol can cause blindness, liver damage and death.

In Kallakuruchi, the accused allegedly sold the concoction in packets through a local vendor, according to The News Minute website.

Those who consumed the alcohol experienced symptoms like dizziness, headaches, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain and eye irritation and were taken to the hospital.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced a compensation of 1m rupees ($12,000; £9,425) to families of those who have died and 50,000 rupees each to those who are hospitalised.

“Those involved in the crime have been arrested. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

But opposition parties have criticised the government for failing to curb toxic alcohol in the state.

“The deaths caused by illicit liquor in the past two years under the DMK [Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam] regime have decelerated Tamil Nadu by four decades, taking us back to the 1980s,” said K Annamalai, the state chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He demanded that the minister in charge of overseeing the sale of alcohol should resign immediately.

South African MP suspended for racist language

0
DA leader John Steenhuisen

A South African lawmaker has been suspended by his party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), after a series of old clips resurfaced online of him spewing violent racist language against black people.

Renaldo Gouws initially insinuated one of the videos was doctored and denied it but a statement issued by the DA on Thursday said it was “genuine and not a fake”.

In the video Mr Gouws, who was sworn into parliament last week, uses a local slur typically reserved for Black Africans repeatedly along with the n-word, and calls for black people to be killed.

This could hardly have come at a worse time for President Cyril Ramaphosa as he thrashes out a new coalition government with the DA.

After being sworn in for a second full term as president on Wednesday, he now has to agreed on the distribution of ministerial posts between his own African National Congress (ANC) and the DA, along with three smaller parties.

The ANC failed to win a majority in last month’s election for the first time since the end of the racist system of apartheid in 1994.

The centre-right DA the country’s second-biggest party, has faced accusations of racism from critics who say the party wants to protect the interests of the white-minority population – a charge it denies.

The DA has said Mr Gouws will face “disciplinary charges”.

Earlier this week, another old video clip re-emerged, in which Mr Gouws makes racially charged remarks.

In the video he implied that white people were subject to reverse apartheid.

He said: “If Africa had to disappear off the face of the earth, no one would [expletive] notice”.

More than 40,000 people have signed an online petition calling for his removal as an MP.

On Monday, after the first clip came out, the 41-year-old claimed he wasn’t racist and apologised on X, saying he had spoken in a “crass” and “hostile” way.

“I refute any claims of racism or being a racist. I can however see how my message was distorted in the way it was delivered by me and I take full responsibility for the actions of my younger and immature self,” he said.

Canada lists Iran Revolutionary Guards as ‘terrorist’ group

Iran Revolutionary Guards

Canada has listed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist” entity and urged its citizens in Iran to leave.

The Canadian government made the announcement on Wednesday, saying that the move will help Ottawa with “countering terrorist financing”. “The decision to list the IRGC through the Criminal Code listing regime sends a strong message that Canada will use all tools at its disposal to combat the terrorist activity of the IRGC, conducted both unilaterally and in knowing association with listed terrorist entities such as Hezbollah and Hamas,” the Canadian government said in a statement.

Iran on Thursday condemned Canada’s listing as an “unwise and unconventional politically motivated step”, the Fars news agency reported.

“Canada’s action will not have any effect on the Revolutionary Guards’ legitimate and deterrent power,” said Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Nasser Kanaani, adding that Tehran reserves the right to respond accordingly to the listing.

For years, the opposition Conservatives in Canada have urged Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to blacklist the IRGC.

On Wednesday, Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister of public safety, cited Iran’s human rights record as one of the reasons behind the decision.

“The Iranian regime has consistently displayed a complete disregard for human rights, both inside and outside Iran, as well as a willingness to destabilise the international rules-based order,” LeBlanc said in a statement.

What Is an Allergic Reaction?

0

Some people sneeze like crazy. Others get itchy hives or watery eyes. But whatever the reaction, it boils down to one thing: allergies.

If you have allergies, you have lots of company. As many as 30% of U.S. adults and 40% of children are in the same boat as you.

While your problem may seem to start in the nose or the eyesallergies actually come from an immune system running wild.

Learning why these reactions happen can help you keep things under control and feel better.

Why Allergic Reactions Happen

Your immune system has an important job: to defend your body from invaders such as bacteria and viruses that mean you harm.

But when it makes war on substances it shouldn’t, that’s an allergy.

Peanuts, eggs, or pollen, for example, can trigger reactions. They are called allergens.

During a reaction, your immune system releases antibodies. These are proteins that deliver a message to cells: Stop that substance! The cells then send out histamine, which causes blood vessels to expand, and other chemicals, and these trigger the allergy symptoms.

These antibodies are singled-minded. Each one targets only one type of allergen. That explains why someone might be allergic to peanuts but not to eggs.

You can come into contact with allergens in many ways: through the skineyes, nose, mouth, or stomach. This can cause your sinuses to clog up, inflame your skin, make it harder to breathe, or cause stomach problems.

What Things Most Often Cause an Attack?

Why do some people have such bad allergies and others don’t? Experts don’t have all the answers, but they say family history is important.

Some common allergens include:

  • Animal dander
  • Bee stings
  • Certain medicationssuch as penicillin
  • Dust mites
  • Foods — particularly peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, eggs, milk, wheat, and soy
  • Insect bites
  • Latex or other materials you touch
  • Mold
  • Plants and pollens

The Symptoms, From Itchy Eyes to Sneezing

Your allergy attacks might range from mild and annoying to more severe and even life-threatening. It all depends on the way your body reacts and how much of the allergen got into your system.

If your allergy is severe, you may have a serious reaction called anaphylaxis. Some cases could be life-threatening and need urgent attention.

Here are some common types of allergies:

Hay fever: Also known as allergic rhinitis, it can cause:

Food allergies: You may feel tingling in your mouth. Your tongue, lips, throat, or face might swell up. Or you could get hives. In the worst cases, you might have anaphylaxis and will need medical help right away.

Eczema: Also known as atopic dermatitis, it is a skin condition. Most types of eczema are not allergies. But the disease can flare up when you’re around things that cause an allergic reaction. Your body’s immune system overreacts to substances, called allergens, that are usually not harmful. You might get hives, itching, swelling, sneezing, and a runny nose. You might have it if you have itching, redness, and peeling or flaking.

Medications: If you’re allergic to a certain drug, you may get a rash, facial swelling, or hives. You could find yourself wheezing. In severe cases, you may develop anaphylaxis.

Stings: If you’re allergic to bees or other insects you may get:

  • A large area of swelling, known as edema, at the site of the sting
  • Itchingor hives all over your body
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, or a cough

As with some other allergies, such as food and medication, a severe reaction to a sting can lead to anaphylaxis.
