Nation building is a collective responsibility -NCCE

0

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) says sustainable national development and improvement in the standard of living among ordinary Ghanaians requires a collective sense of responsibility from all Ghanaians.

Mr Samuel Akolgo, the Garu District Director of the Commission, who made call, said the Commission believed in the collective contribution and participation of all Ghanaians as a strong catalyst for sustainable development.

He, therefore, underscored the need for Ghanaians to inculcate the spirit of nationalism and patriotism and resolve to work together to address challenges facing the country’s progress.

Mr Akolgo made the call when the Commission engaged some identified groups at Gbetuasig, Benguri, Tanzug, Siguuriand Kugpeilla communities in the Garu District of the Upper East Region as part of activities marking this year’s Annual Constitution Week.

It was on the theme: “Together we can build Ghana. So Get Involved”.

He explained that ensuring peace and peaceful coexistence was not only key to deepening democracy but it was imperative for advancing development and urged Ghanaians to work to consciously protect the prevailing peace before, during and after the 2024 general election.

“Ghanaians must ensure that the 2024 general election is held based on issues and in an atmosphere of peace devoid of assaults, rancour, acrimony, intimidation and violence,” he added.

Regional security threats and activities of violent extremists in neighbouring countries posed security concerns to Ghana’s peace and there was the need to support the security agencies to prevent any spillover, the District Director said.

Apart from that, he said, internal factors such as ethnic and religious tensions and comments by some politicians also posed threats to the country’s peace and underscored the need to safeguard it.

“It is the citizens of Ghana who should resolve to come together to work conscientiously at addressing these challenges identified, such as vote buying, corruption, economic hardships, misinformation and disinformation,” MrAkolgo said.

“Every citizen, for instance, whether a teacher, medical doctor, lawyer, judge, speaker of parliament, president, a media practitioner, soldier, clergy, trader, farmer, fishmonger or student is obligated to abide by the laws of the nation.”

He reiterated the commitment of the NCCE to continuously instill civic rights and responsibility in Ghanaians to ensure they played their part in the development process.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben South, Isaac Apau Gyasi, has called on Koforidua traders not to entertain any fear over a planned demolition exercise.

According to the MCE, despite plans to embark on a possible demolition of the current market in an effort to construct a befitting modern market, his office will ensure that a temporary trading    place has been found before the exercise starts.

Mr Apau Gyasi, the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South

He gave the assurance when he spoke to The Chronicle in Koforidua recently.

Earlier, traders at Koforidua Zamarama Market had expressed grave concerns over a planned demolition exercise by the Municipal Assembly.

According to the aggrieved traders, the MCE had failed to fulfil his promises of allocating a marketable place for them (traders) before the demolition exercise begins.

They stated that the temporary market should be up to standard to promote business activities and also help generate revenue for the assembly.

Asonaba Kojo Aidoo, Spokesman for the traders, in a petition to the paramount chief for New Juaben, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, pleaded with the latter to intervene in the ongoing misunderstanding between the traders and the MCE for peaceful working atmosphere.

Asonaba Kojo Aidoo, the leader of the affected traders at the New Juaben palace.

In their petition to Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, the traders said that the MCE had made a verbal agreement to provide shades, electricity, security and place to store their goods before their relocation.

But according to Asonaba Kojo, the MCE had ordered the traders to move from their current location by Friday, May 24, 2024 without providing them with a decent place to trade.

Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, after the receipt of the petition, assured the traders of his readiness to intervene in the matter.

According to him, traditional leaders’ support towards community development cannot be underestimated hence he would ensure that the relocation of the traders is done peacefully without disputes in the municipality.

Carried Participation Interest rakes in more oil revenues

The Public Interest Accountability Committee (PIAC) has revealed that the Carried Participating Interest (CAPI) dominated the revenue earnings for Ghana in 2023.

The Committee, in its 2024 report, indicated that total earnings from CAPI were higher than other revenue sources, notably corporate income tax, surface rentals, royalties and the Petroleum Holding Fund income (PHF).

The Committee said CAPI continued to contribute the highest percentage of total revenues for Ghana, followed by corporate income taxes, royalties, PHF income and surface rentals.

Carried Participating Interest in the Oil and Gas is defined as a portion of a well’s ownership that is exempted from all or most of the expenses associated with its discovery, drilling and completion but earns income on the well’s output.

Ghana’s participation in the oil and gas sector is characterised by this arrangement, where it is exempt from all or most expenses associated with the discovery, drilling and completion but earns income.

Ghana is entitled to 15 percent CAPI, in accordance with Section 10 of the Petroleum Exploration Law.

The law states that when a discovery of oil is declared to be commercial, the State, acting through the State oil company, shall have a carried interest of at least 15 percent and the option to acquire an additional participating interest in the discovery.

According to the Committee, the revenue derived from CAPI in 2023 constituted 44.3 percent of $471 million of total petroleum revenues, as compared to $734 million of petroleum revenue in 2022.

PIAC said the decline represented about a 36 percent decrease in CAPI over that of 2022.

PIAC said CAPI generated from the Jubilee Field stood at $343 million, while that of TEN and SGN amounted to $54 million and $73 million, respectively.

Carried and Participating Interest has been the most significant source of revenue for the State, contributing 58 percent, followed by royalty payments at 25 percent and corporate income tax at 16.5 percent.

PIAC said Ghana earned approximately $370 million from corporate income tax, $220 million in royalties, $6 million for the PHF, and $771 thousand for surface rentals.

According to the Committee, total revenue earnings for Ghana for the year 2023 was $1,062,323,419.12 representing a 25.65 percent decrease from that of 2022.

Okofrobuor Obeng Nuakoh III, Chief of Dunkwa

Okofrobuor Obeng Nuakoh III, the chief of Dunkwa, in the Central region, has launched a crusade against illegal mining in the area, particularly in the Offin River.

He has charged all stakeholders, all his sub-chiefs, residents, as well as landlords to be on the lookout for those who indulge in the illegal practice at the expense of the welfare of the people and development of the area.

“It is time those engaged in illegal mining to destroy water bodies are named and shamed”, the chief emphasied while addressing a durbar of his sub-chiefs and people of Dunkwa recently at the forecourt of his palace.

A river completely destroyed through illegal mining

Nana Nuakoh called for the support of the people in his resolve to fight against illegal mining on River Offin and thus help in the crusade to save the river bodies and forests in the area.

He said any landlord who shielded a known illegal miner would incur his wrath and face the consequences and advised the landlords to resort to the ejection of such characters from their houses.

He called on all miners to stop desecrating and polluting the Offin River and entreated miners to reclaim mined areas noting that the fact that Dunkwa is a mining town does not mean mining should be done irresponsibly.

The Dunkwa chief said the people in the area deserve clean and good water and reminded miners to protect the environment whilst carrying out their activities in the interest of posterity.

He reminded the people that it is incumbent on them to make efforts to fight the menace to complement efforts by the government which he said, must also demonstrate the willingness and commitment to protect our water bodies and forests for the unborn generation.

Nana Obeng Nuakoh has, therefore, urged the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be proactive and check the activities of illegal miners to save the land from wanton destruction.

Meanwhile, the Dunkwahene has also cautioned against the indiscriminate invocation of curses at the least provocation, which practice leads to loss of lives. He warned that anybody arraigned for invoking a curse would be severely dealt with.

In another development, Okofrobuor Nuakoh III has honoured Nana Kwadwo Enum, the Chief of Dunkwa Subinsu and Nana Esi Annor both from the Agona royal family, by elevating them as Dabihene and Dabihemaa respectively of the Dunkwa Traditional Council.

Nana Okofrobuor advised them to continue the good work towards improving the standard of living in the community.

Nana Esi Annor thanked Okofrobuor Nuakoh III and Nananom for the honour and promised she would not disappoint them.

She assured that she would see to it that the Dunkwa Queen-Mothers Association become vibrant to champion development in the area.

The new Dabihemaa stated that she would ensure that Queen-mothers visit schools periodically to educate the young girls to become responsible mothers and women in society.

Nana Kwadwo Enum on his part expressed his profound gratitude and appreciation to Nananom and the Traditional Council for the honour.

Afua Asantewaa, known for attempting the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon, has mocked Fella Makafui’s flat tummy products.

According to her, even though she opted to buy just a corset, she was made to buy belly jell. Afua who has now become extremely influential in Ghana’s public space in a video shared via social media was seen “mocking” the product.

“The way they market the product you may think you are going to buy just a corset and you end up buying belly gel and arm gel. Some of the products are in my house so when I get to Ghana I will do a live video and let you see them. Women are suffering. The products are still there as I speak,” she said.

This comes after Medikal in a video indicated that Fella Makafui’s tummy and huge backside are all a result of tummy tuck and liposuction.

Cassie posts first statement since Diddy footage

Cassie thanked her friends, family and fans

Singer Cassie has posted her first statement since video emerged showing rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs attacking her.

The star, whose full name is Casandra Ventura, said domestic violence “broke me down to someone never thought would become”.

The video of the attack in 2016 was released last week by CNN. Ms Ventura had alleged her ex-boyfriend and producer assaulted her in a legal action last year.

Diddy apologised at the weekend, commenting in an Instagram video: “I was disgusted when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”

In her statement, which was posted to Instagram, Ms Ventura thanked her friends, family and the public for their support.

“The outpouring of love has created a place for my younger self to settle and feel safe now, but this is only the beginning,” she said.

“Domestic Violence is THE issue. It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become. With a lot of hard work, I am better today, but I will always be recovering from my past.”

“My only ask is that EVERYONE open your heart to believing victims the first time. It takes a lot of heart to tell the truth out of a situation that you were powerless in,” Ms Ventura wrote.

“This healing journey is never ending, but this support means everything to me.”

In his apology, Mr Combs said: “I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry.”

Lawyers for Ms Ventura told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that Diddy’s statement was “more about himself than the many people he has hurt”.

“When Cassie and multiple other women came forward, he denied everything and suggested that his victims were looking for a payday,” lawyer Meredith Firetog said.

Kanayo O. Kanayo angry over ‘money rituals’ ban in Nollywood

Kanayo O. Kanayo

Kanayo O. Kanayo has joined key figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry to express strong objection to government’s recent decision to impose restrictions on content in films, music videos and skits.

The renowned actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has criticised the move, calling it “arrant nonsense” and questioning the rationale behind the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa’s support for such limitations on filmmakers.

Veteran musician Mike Okri also voiced his scepticism about the government’s motives, suggesting that the ban could be an attempt to stifle the film industry.

Whoever is behind this from the FG is joking. It’s a way to silence the movie industry. They should focus on the real challenges facing the country,” Okri snapped. He urged authorities to prioritize addressing more pressing national concerns.

The federal government, represented by the Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr. Shaibu Husseini, recently announced a ban on the portrayal and endorsement of money rituals and the promotion of tobacco products in entertainment content, citing Section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004.

This announcement was made during a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood event held in Enugu State in collaboration with Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

Dr. Husseini emphasized the importance of the film industry’s progress and the necessity for entertainment media to refrain from promoting harmful behaviours and substances. He concluded by stressing the urgent need for decisive and collective action to preserve the industry’s integrity and the welfare of society.

The entertainment industry’s reaction has been one of concern and frustration. Industry leaders argue that these restrictions could hinder creative freedom and expression, which are vital for the growth and dynamism of Nollywood, one of the largest film industries in the world.

Kanayo O. Kanayo’s and Mike Okri’s criticisms reflect a broader sentiment within the industry that the government should focus on resolving more critical national issues rather than imposing restrictive measures on creative content.

Ras Kuuku calls out Kofi Kinaata for deleting his verse on their song

0
Ras Kuuku

Ghanaian Reggae artiste Ras Kuuku has disclosed that he initially had a verse on Kofi Kinaata’s popular 2023 track ‘Effiakuma Love,’ which was later removed for reasons unknown. Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on May 23, 2024, Ras Kuuku shared that he originally produced a verse for the song back in 2020, only to find it removed when the track was re-released.

A lot of people have been doing things to me in this industry; I’ve just been keeping quiet,” Kuuku said. Speculating on the reason behind the removal, Ras Kuuku playfully suggested that his verse might have been better than Kofi Kinaata’s, which prompted a re-recording.

Maybe my verse was harder than his. Because the first one he sang, his words were thick; I gave the song a lighter voice. So maybe after listening to my verse, they made him sing it again,” he said.

Despite the initial disappointment, Ras Kuuku emphasised that there was no bad blood between him and Kofi Kinaata. “I don’t have any issue with him. Kofi is my brother, so I kept it cool,” Kuuku stated.

When asked if he would collaborate with Kofi Kinaata again, Ras Kuuku declined, stating, “No, I’ve got so many verses. I won’t do it again.

The revelation adds another layer to the story behind ‘Effiakuma Love,’ a track that has captivated many fans since its release. Ras Kuuku’s candid comments shed light on the sometimes challenging dynamics within the music industry, where creative decisions can lead to unexpected changes.

Despite this setback, Ras Kuuku continues to remain positive and focused on his music career. His willingness to speak openly about his experiences highlights his resilience and dedication to his craft.

US to designate Kenya as ‘non-NATO ally’ during Ruto’s state visit

US President Joe Biden speaks as Kenyan President William Ruto applauds

The United States plans to designate Kenya as the country’s first key non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa as Kenyan President Willam Ruto makes a state visit to Washington, DC, to deepen ties between the two nations.

The White House said US President Joe Biden will inform Congress on Thursday that he will give Kenya the largely symbolic title.

Currently, the US has 18 countries designated as non-NATO allies, including Israel, Brazil and the Philippines.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday morning, Ruto said his trip to the US capital is “a sign of friendship and partnership and collaboration between two countries that share common values”, including freedom and democracy.

“Today we have an occasion to build synergies, to build partnerships, that will not only solve our current problems but also to build a future that is much more promising, much more prosperous,” the Kenyan president said.

Ruto’s visit to the US, which began earlier this week, will see the Kenyan leader hold talks with Biden at the White House later on Thursday.

The “non-NATO ally” label will reflect Kenya’s rise from a regional partner that has long cooperated with US counterterrorism operations on the continent to a global influence.

The Kenyan leader’s trip is the sixth state visit hosted by the Biden administration and the first for an African president since 2008.
