Ghana will face off with Central African Republic in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Baa Yara Sports Stadium on Monday, May 10, 2024 – four days after clashing with the Eagles of Mali in Bamako.

Laryea Kingston regrets actions and apologises

Laryea Kingston

Former Ghana U-17 coach Laryea Kingston has tendered his apologies following his resignation amidst controversy surrounding his actions.

Kingston acknowledged his shortcomings in a press statement and expressed remorse to Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and the Executive Council.

The decision to step down came after the Black Starlets’ defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU B U-17 Championship semi-finals, which dashed their hopes of qualifying for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Kingston, visibly disappointed, announced his resignation shortly thereafter.

The Ghana Football Association disclosed that Kingston conducted himself inappropriately as he declined to attend a team meeting and disembarked from the team bus en route to the hotel.

As assistant coaches prepare to lead the team in the third-place playoff against Nigeria, Kingston, just hours before kickoff, reflected on his actions and issued a heartfelt apology.

“I apologise unreservedly for our failure to pay back the trust, love and support we have graciously received from Ghanaians,” Kingston stated.

“Concerning any other issue about my personal conduct, with suggestions that I abandoned the team following last Saturday’s semi-final defeat to Burkina Faso, I state unmistakably, that my announcement during the post-match press conference was without ambiguity that my role as coach with the team ends after the tournament.”

He continued, “To the President and the Exco, I also want to unreservedly and sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding, inconvenience and embarrassment my decision to announce my resignation last Saturday caused.”

“After careful consideration, I could have handled things better and this will be a guiding experience for me going forward,” Kingston added. “I love my nation, I served my nation as a player, and I have been serving my nation as a coach.”

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity given by the GFA and the support of Ghanaians, Kingston affirmed the team’s commitment to finishing the tournament strongly by aiming to defeat Nigeria and secure the bronze medal.

Ancelotti’s secret weapon – his son

0
Carlo and Davide Ancelotti

When it comes to the Champions League nights, Real Madrid have normalised the extraordinary.

They showed that in their recent semi-final. With 10 minutes left in the second leg, Bayern were 1-0 up at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real were heading out.

Davide Ancelotti had been pestering his father, Carlo, to make one particular substitution.

Jude Bellingham, who regularly makes timely runs into the box from midfield, was tiring. Bayern were concentrating all their energy on defending against the power and pace of Vinicius Jr.

Davide realised the team needed more presence in the box, a player to split the defenders’ attention. He looked to Joselu, a player with a tall frame and striker’s instinct.

The former Stoke and Newcastle forward had come to Real on a season’s loan from second division Espanyol. Not many would have picked him out as the player to produce some late brilliance. But as a frustrated Ancelotti senior turned to his son on the bench, Davide made his point: “Joseludai.” Dai, an Italian term, means ‘come on’.

Carlo relented and told the striker to warm up. Thrown on in the 81st minute, Joselu capitalised on a Manuel Neuer error to equalise and followed it up with a quick second to send the Spaniards to yet another Champions League final. Ten minutes, two goals. The power of one substitution.

Once again, Davide had made the right call. Carlo’s son, as Real’s assistant manager, continues to be his secret weapon.

Man City identify New number one amid Ederson exit reports

0
Pep Guardiola and Ederson

Manchester City have reportedly identified a potential new number one goalkeeper amid suggestions that Ederson could seek pastures new this summer.

Ederson has been the Citizens’ undisputed first-choice shot-stopper ever since he moved to the Etihad Stadium from Benfica in June 2017 for around £35m.

The 30-year-old has made a total of 332 appearances for Man City across all competitions, keeping 155 clean sheets, and he has won 17 trophies during his seven-year spell at the club.

Ederson has won more Premier League titles than any other goalkeeper in the division’s history, overtaking Peter Schmeichel, after celebrating his sixth triumph with Man City earlier this month.

The Brazil international remains a key figure in Pep Guardiola‘s squad and has two years remaining on his contract at the Etihad, but speculation over a possible summer exit has surfaced this month.

Ederson attracting interest from Saudi Arabia?

According to recent reports, it is a “possibility” that Ederson could leave Man City if a “good proposal” is offered to him this summer.

Ederson was visibly enraged after coming off in a Premier League win at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month with a fractured eye socket, and he hinted on social media after the match that his injury was not the sole reason for his fury.

Indeed, Ederson posted on Instagram: ‘No one understands, but me. See you soon’, raising questions over whether he was hinting that he has now played his final game for Man City.

It is understood that Saudi Pro League clubs including Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Al-Nassr are willing to pay around £25m in an attempt to lure Ederson to the Middle East.

Olympiacos & Fiorentina meet at Athens for the Conference League final

0
Olympiacos players

Meeting in Athens for the Europa Conference League final, Greek giants Olympiacos and last year’s runners-up Fiorentina will battle it out for glory on Wednesday evening.

Only 10 miles separate the Super League side’s home ground from the AEK Arena, but their Italian counterparts will try to spoil the party by going one better than a painful loss in Prague 12 months ago.

By taking apart Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa in the semi-finals, ultimately cruising to 6-2 aggregate win, Olympiacos booked their place in a showpiece with special resonance for the Piraeus club’s fans, who will not travel far to attend their team’s first UEFA final.

The Erythroleykoi had edged past Maccabi Tel Aviv and Fenerbahce in the previous two rounds – spectacularly beating the former after extra time and then the latter on penalties – but a masterclass from Moroccan striker Ayoub El Kaabi sealed his side’s place in this week’s decider.

Having found the net no fewer than five times versus Villa, El Kaabi moved on to 15 goals in continental competition this season – more than any African footballer has ever managed in a single European campaign – and he has come to symbolise the unlikely progress of Olympiacos in 2024.

Experienced coach Jose Luis Mendilibar was appointed in mid-February, following Carlos Carvalhal‘s departure, and the Basque boss has taken his new club to within one game of replicating last year’s remarkable feat – leading a struggling Sevilla side to yet another Europa League title.

On this occasion, Mendilibar has already helped Olympiacos become only the second Greek outfit to reach a UEFA final, some 64 years since their debut in European competition.

With Wednesday’s game taking place more or less in their own back yard, a unique kind of pressure will apply to the squad that has just finished third in the Greek Super League, following a 2-2 draw with arch-rivals Panathinaikos in their final domestic fixture.

They are the first club to contest a European final in their home country since Marseille lost the 2018 Europa League decider to Atletico Madrid, and each of the last four teams to do so have all ended as runners-up.

While their rivals for the Conference League trophy dropped into UEFA’s third-tier tournament after exiting the Europa League, Fiorentina came through qualifying for the second straight season to earn their shot at redemption.

Beaten by Jarrod Bowen‘s 90th-minute winner for West Ham United this time last year, the Viola are determined to bring silverware back home to Florence, bagging a bonus place in next term’s new-look Europa League in the process.

En route to Athens, the Serie A side are unbeaten in 13 European matches – the longest such run in their long history – having progressed through the playoff round before topping Group F last autumn.

Lucas Beltran celebrates a goal

Throughout the knockout phase, Fiorentina have pushed their luck, following a stoppage-time winner against Maccabi Haifa in the last 16 with an extra-time victory over Viktoria Plzen; then, Lucas Beltran‘s late penalty sunk Club Brugge in the semi-finals.

Vincenzo Italiano‘s penultimate game in charge – his team must still meet Europa League winners Atalanta BC in a potentially celebratory final fixture, delayed until Sunday due to both sides’ busy schedules – offers the chance to shake off claims he cannot cut it on the big stage.

A highly-regarded tactician, Italiano lost last season’s Coppa Italia and Conference League finals, before dramatically exiting to Atalanta in the cup semis this season, so he will have something to prove on Wednesday night – particularly as his team have just finished eighth in the Serie A standings.

Last year’s loss in Prague was Fiorentina’s fourth defeat in five continental deciders to date, leaving the Tuscan club with only the 1961 European Cup Winners’ Cup to show for their efforts; therefore, Olympiacos will not be the only team under pressure to claim victory in the Greek capital.

Finance Minister pleads with biz community: Please Stop Rushing To Buy The Dollar!

0
Dr Amin Adam

The Minister for Finance, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has appealed to the business community to stop rushing to buy dollars and other foreign currencies. According to him, his plea is rooted in the fact that the mad rush to buy the dollar is causing the local currency, the Cedi, to lose grounds.

According to him, the government was doing everything possible to bring in $2.32 billion from multiple sources before the year ends.

He mentioned these sources as disbursements from the IMF and World Bank, the Gold-for-Oil Programme, the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) Gold for Reserves programme and proceeds from the Cocoa Syndicated Funds.

Addressing a news conference in Accra over the weekend, Minister Amin Adam blamed the current exchange rate pressures to the strengthening of the US Dollar against major trading currencies, seasonal forex demand and other temporary factors affirming that the government was implementing robust measures to ensure continued stability.

Whilst admitting the current challenges, he was hopeful about medium-term stability of the Cedi with a cumulative depreciation of 14.2% as of 20th May, 2024 compared to 20.7% recorded in the same period in 2023.

Dr Amin Adam told the journalists and other stakeholders that the Cedi would largely be stable and improve into the medium-term, as government completes its debt restructuring, make more progress on fiscal consolidation and improve the country’s reserves over the same period.

The Minister also detailed the progress made under the IMF-Supported Post Covid-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG).

Following a successful 2nd Review Mission by the IMF in April 2024, Ghana secured a Staff Level Agreement (SLA), paving the way for the IMF Executive Board to consider and approve the disbursement of a third tranche of $360 million in June, bringing total disbursements to $1.56 billion.

“The positive results of the first and second reviews of the implementation of the IMF-supported Programme testify that we are achieving the Programme’s objective of restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability,” he said.

He noted the resilience of the economy, citing a 2.9% GDP growth in 2023, surpassing both the original projection of 1.5% and the revised projection of 2.3%.

The Minister assured the nation that his outfit was working closely with the BoG to implement measures to address the perennial depreciation of the Cedi, including fast-tracking fiscal consolidation, intensifying the Gold-for-Oil and Gold for Reserves programmes, and strategic FX interventions by the BoG.

I’ll establish Fixed Exchange Rate for Import Duty Payment -Alan Cash

0
Alan Kyerematen

The founder and leader of the Movement for Change and the presidential candidate of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC), Alan Kyerematen, has stated that his government will establish a fixed exchange rate regime for import duty payments for a period not exceeding six months in Ghana.

This policy, which will be implemented as part of his first year Economic Recovery Plan, will reduce the high level of imported inflation in the economy.

Alan Cash also asserted that fixing the foreign exchange rate for calculating import duties in our local currency will significantly enhance stability and predictability in Ghana’s business environment and boost economic prosperity for all.

Mr Kyerematen presented this policy solution during a high-level meeting with members of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) at the Coconut Groove Hotel, in Accra, last week Thursday.

The former Trade and Industry Minister assured the members of the AGI that his government would provide the Ghanaian private sector with the needed support, including but not limited to fiscal incentives, to drive his Great Transformational Plan for the country.

Mr. Kyerematen further outlined his plan of action for boosting enterprise development in Ghana through trade, industry, agriculture and ICT.

Alan Kyerematen’s expertise within enterprise development is grounded in decades of experience as the Regional Director for Enterprise Africa and the founding Managing Director of the EMPRETEC Foundation where he helped establish hundreds of enterprises across 13 Sub Saharan African countries.

Alan was also one of 7 International Consultants invited by the Nelson Mandela Government to chart a national plan for enterprise development in newly independent South Africa.

Similarly, Dr. Prince Kofi Kludjeson, who led AGI between 1999 and 2005, stated that many flourishing indigenous businesses currently operating in Ghana owe their successes to the mentorship provided by the EMPRETEC Foundation in the 90s.

He admonished local business owners who are facing challenges due to the current poor leadership to support Alan’s historic bid to become the president of Ghana.

Dr. Kludjeson noted, “I have no doubt that 50% of the challenges of this Nation will be addressed under an Alan Kyerematen Presidency. That is who he is and what he has been doing throughout his business and political career”.

Alan Kyerematen was accompanied by some senior members of the ARC and Movement for Change, including Dr. Abu Sakara Foster, Saddique Boniface, Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike, Mrs. Augustina Cudjoe and Mr. Henry Asante.

Alan Kyerematen requested the support of business owners in Ghana to make him the first Independent President of Ghana to make Ghana rise again.

Police capo died in official accommodation

0
The ACP Antiri-Addo Nicholas Aletso

The Chronicle can report that the Deputy Volta North Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Antiri-Addo Nicholas Aletso died in his official temporary residence, inside a hotel in Hohoe.

The paper’s finding is contrary to reports circulating on social media suggesting that the deputy regional police boss might have gone to book the said hotel and subsequently went there for pleasure, leading to his untimely death, aged 58.

His body being conveyed to the mortuary

Our in-depth investigation reveals that the deceased, who was the Divisional Commander of Police at Akropong, in the Eastern Region, was granted permission to travel and visit his wife and children in the United Kingdom (UK).

Just around the same time, he was transferred to Hohoe as the Second-In-Command of the Volta North Regional Police Command. He did travel to see the family.

On Monday March 25, 2024, he reported at his command post as the Deputy Regional Police Commander.

It is the practice that if a senior police officer is transferred to a place and there is no accommodation, the police administration seeks temporary residence for such an officer at any conducive hotel, where he or she resides, until the permanent accommodation is ready.

ACP Nicholas Aletso’s case was no exception, especially when the new region was carved out of the Volta Region, only on December 1, 2022 with its attendant deficiencies in accommodation.

The lot, therefore, fell on this particular hotel (name withheld), which plays host to some visitors to the police command.

Barely 48 hours later, the family made frantic efforts on phone to reach him, with difficulty, and made a report to the authorities.

A team of policemen, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Simon Yevu, was dispatched to the said hotel to ascertain what had gone amiss.

His room number four was not locked, but the senior police officer’s body was found there.

It was removed to the Government Hospital in Hohoe, where he was medically declared dead.

An autopsy was later conducted at the Police Hospital in Accra.

Two herdsmen brutally murdered at Maame Krobo

0
Bodies of the two herdsmen without their heads

Tension and state of insecurity is gradually gaining momentum at Kwamepong Nkwanta, a farming community near Maame Krobo, in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District of the Eastern region.

This follows the protracted misunderstanding between the Fulani community and farmers in the area.

The unfortunate development has now resulted in the killing of two Fulani herdsmen by some unknown people at Kwamepong Nkwanta on Tuesday, last week.

The two Fulani herdsmen, who have been identified as Umaru Mamudu, 18 years and Ali Abubakari, 35 years, were found in a pool of blood without their heads and several cutlass and gun wounds on them.

The two bodies have since been taken to Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital morgue in the Kwahu Afram Plains North for preservation, investigation and autopsy.

In an interview with The Chronicle, Mamudu Bukari, father of the victims, said the demise of the two is a big blow to his family and the Fulani community by extension, as they are yet to come to terms with the circumstances that led to their gruesome murder.

The father of the victims indicated that the family suspects a calculated and intentional killing of his beloved children.

He has, therefore, called on the Ghana Police service to thoroughly conduct investigation into the case to apprehend the perpetrators for peace’s sake.

Giving a background to the suspected murder, the head of Fulanis at Donkorkrom, Alhaji Iddrissa Sambo, said he reported to the police some time ago that some farmers at Maame Krobo had embarked on what they called ‘shoot and kill’ exercise, aimed at killing their cattle.

Alhaji Iddrissa Sambo disclosed that a certain Mr. Akwasi Ahorku, a native of Maame Krobo, was allegedly killed during the ‘shoot and kill exercise’, a situation which residents of Maame Krobo blamed on them and, therefore, decided to attack any Fulani on sight.

The rage of the residents led to the destruction of properties belonging to the Fulanis, with the corresponding death of two Fulani boys.

According to Alhaji Iddrissa Sambo, a press conference was recently organised by a group of people calling themselves Maame Krobo Farmers Association, where they announced May 16, 2024 as the day set aside for the funeral rite of the late Akwasi Ahorku.

The Donkorkrom Fulanis chief continued that, the leadership of the group announced that before the final funeral rites of the late Akwasi is observed, the people of the area have to perform rituals to invoke the spirits of the land to avenge the death of Akwasi Ahorku.

To him, therefore, the killing of the two herdsmen and subsequent missing of their severed heads confirm their suspicion that their tribesmen have been used for rituals.

Alhaji Iddrissa Sambo has further called on the police to retrieve the heads of the two, a condition if not met would force them (Fulani leadership) not to accept the dead bodies for burial.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kwahu Afram Plains South, Evans Ekyei Ntiri, together with the Eastern North Regional Police Commander, ACP Isaac Asante and his men, have since visited the bereaved family.

The two, in separate interviews, have assured the bereaved family of their commitment to arrest the faceless wicked individuals who perpetuated the hideous crime.

When contacted, the chief of Maame Krobo, Nana Nyakum-Panyin, even though confirmed the performance of rituals before the burial ceremony of the late Akwasi at the said press conference, denied having a hand in the killing of the two Fulani herdsmen.

According to him, it beats his imagination that his name would be associated with an act which was committed outside his traditional jurisdiction.

He, however, told the paper that his checks at the district Assembly indicated that the organisers of the said press conference have been invited by the District Security Committee (DISEC) to assist with investigations.

The chief of Maame Krobo hinted that the DISEC was not happy with some statements made by the organisers during the press conference, hence the invitation to assist in unraveling the circumstance that led to the death of the two.
