Stormzy announces second breakup with girlfriend

Maya Jama and Stormzy

Fans are truly stunned after Maya Jama and Stormzy have announced their second breakup.

The celebrity couple first started dating in 2014, before deciding to breakup four years later.

Then, just last year the pair were spotted together in public and at several events.

When signs first started to appear indicating the pair were back together, fans couldn’t control their excitement.

“I feel like Stormzy & Maya are on holiday together. Please let this be true. They are my fav,” one fan said, while another wrote, “We have all been hoping and praying on this!!! Here for it!!!”

However, this morning (17 July) Jama took to social media to share a statement announcing their second split.

“We’ve been laughing whilst drafting this because we never, ever, in a million years thought we’d be the couple announcing a breakup, but for the sake of clarity and, more importantly, to allow us the space and grace that’s needed for us both to be able to navigate this next bit of our lives with peace, we thought it might be best to,” it read.

“We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019, and then spent five years manoeuvring life apart.

“We decided to try for the final time in August 2023, and we’ve spent this past year trying our best to make it work; however, we recently decided to call it quits.

Passenger train derails in India, killing at least two people

Passenger train derails

A passenger train jumped the tracks in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh, killing at least two passengers and injuring 20 others, according to the authorities.

The Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express, which connects India’s northern states to the eastern state of Assam, derailed in Gonda district, near the Hindu holy city of Ayodhya, at about 2:30pm (09:00 GMT) on Thursday, Indian media reported.

At least four carriages had overturned, said broadcaster NDTV. The network’s footage showed passengers standing on top of a derailed compartment that had crashed onto its side.

Naveen Kumar, a state relief commissioner, said dozens of rescuers, a 40-member team of doctors and paramedics, and 15 ambulances had reached the site of the accident.

The injured have been moved to hospitals and government health centres in the area, he said.

“The train accident in Gonda district is extremely sad,” Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath posted on social media platform X.

“District administration officials have been directed to carry out relief and rescue operations on a war footing and to take the injured to the hospital,” he added.

Dinosaur skeleton fetches record $44.6m at auction

The skeleton was discovered by chance by a professional fossil hunter in 2022

A large dinosaur’s skeleton has fetched $44.6m (£34m) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York City – the most ever paid for a fossil.

The plant-eating stegosaurus – nicknamed Apex – is 11ft (3.4m) tall and 27ft long from nose to tail, and “ranks high among the most complete skeletons ever found”, Sotheby’s said.

It was sold to an anonymous buyer, who said: “Apex was born in America and is going to stay in America” – in what is seen as a hint that it might be loaned to a US institution.

Apex was discovered by chance by a palaeontologist in 2022 near the suitably named town of Dinosaur in the western US state of Colorado.

“The finest stegosaurus to appear at auction, ‘Apex’ has made history today [Wednesday] selling for $44.6 million at Sotheby’s to become the most valuable fossil ever sold at auction,” Sotheby’s said in a statement.

The fossil exceeded its pre-sale estimates by more than 11 times, going “to applause after 15 minutes”, the auction house said.

Seven buyers took part in the bidding process for the largest stegosaurus fossil ever found.

Apex was discovered by Jason Cooper, a professional fossil hunter.

Mr Cooper dubbed it Apex because its formidable dimensions would have made it a dominant animal in its environment.

Apex is believed to have roamed the planet about 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic Period.

The previous dinosaur fossil sale record was set in 2020, when a Tyrannosaurus Rex – known as Stan – fetched $31.8m.

Suspected arson attack in Nice kills 7 including children

The fire broke out early on Thursday in the Moulins area of Nice

Seven people have died, including three young children and a teenager, in a fire that broke out in the early hours of Thursday in the southern French city of Nice.

The local prosecutor said officials were investigating the blaze as a potential arson attack.

Flames engulfed the upper floors of an apartment block in the Moulins area of Nice, close to the city’s airport.

The mayor of Nice said they had images that clearly showed the fire had been caused by petrol poured into a stairwell by hooded people during the night. Visiting the scene later, caretaker Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said three people were being sought by police.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said three young children were among the victims and that police would “shed light on the circumstances of this terrible tragedy”.

The fire broke out on second floor and spread quickly to the upper floors. Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli told journalists that in light of initial findings, “I have opened an inquiry into acts of arson as the cause of death.”

Local reports said the seven victims were all part of the same family. Officials said three adults, a teenager and younger children aged five, seven and 10 had died.

Two members of the family are said to have tried to escape through a window – one died and the other is in a critical condition.

Prefect Hugues Moutouh said everyone had been affected by the tragedy and “very determined to provide help and assistance to the survivors”.

One man called Iftahou told the Nice Matin website that he had arrived at the scene while the fire was burning and realised there was no hope for those inside.

The head of the Comorian community in the south of France, Najim Maecha, said he knew the family and that they had lived in Nice since about 2013.

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said the human toll of the disaster was extremely high. As well as the seven victims, another 30 people have suffered smoke inhalation.

Ursula von der Leyen secures five more years in top EU job

Ursula von der Leyen

Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as president of the European Commission following a secret ballot among MEPs.

She secured the backing of 401 Members of the European Parliament at a vote in Strasbourg on Thursday – 41 more than she needed.

Ms von der Leyen, of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), was first elected in 2019.

She will now serve another five years at the helm of the EU.

“You can imagine this is a very emotional and special moment for me,” she said after the vote, hailing the result as a sign of strong confidence.

Speaking to reporters, she added that the most important thing for Europe was to defend its democracy “which is under attack from inside and from outside”.

Her remarks echoed a speech to MEPs earlier on Thursday, in which she spoke out against what she called the “demagogues and extremists” that “destroy our European way of life” and promised to collaborate with “all the democratic forces” in the Parliament.

Ahead of the vote, Ms von der Leyen also said she would champion European defence with increased military spending, and committed to sticking to climate targets.

“The last five years have shown what we can do together. Let us do it again. Let us make the choice of strength,” she said.

Ms von der Leyen’s nomination was approved at an EU leaders’ summit last month, although not all of them backed her.

Finding Relief From Vaginal Dryness and Pain

0

There’s no reason to be embarrassed if you have vaginal dryness or pain with sex. After menopause, these things are pretty common. They’re part of a condition called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). There are a lot of ways to get help for your symptoms. And the fastest way to feel better is to talk to your doctor.

Before your visit, it’s a good idea to jot down all of your symptoms and questions so you remember them all.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What’s the difference between a lubricant and a vaginal moisturizer?
  • What are all of my treatment options for dryness and painful sex?
  • Is estrogen safe for me?
  • Are there natural ways I can find relief?
  • What other symptoms can I get?

Why Does Sex Hurt Now?

Pain with vaginal sex is called dyspareunia. After menopause, the most common cause is lower estrogen levels. This can lead to vaginal atrophy. That’s when the tissue in your vagina gets thinner, less elastic, and tears easily. And you lose some of your natural lubrication. You may get a “sandpaper” feeling during sex.

You should tell your doctor how long you’ve had pain and dryness. The length and type of symptoms you have will steer your doctor toward the best treatment.

It can be helpful for you to describe how it hurts. Is there pain at the opening of your vagina? Or is it deeper inside? Do you have aches that linger after sex is over?

What to expect from your visit: Your doctor may give you a pelvic exam to check for changes in your vagina. They’ll look for signs of infection, irritation, or other non-menopausal skin conditions that can cause vaginal problems.

Will Dryness Go Away on Its Own?

Unlike hot flashes, your dryness won’t get better by itself. In fact, your symptoms may get worse without treatment. And your vagina may start to itch or feel dry all the time, not just during sex.

Are There Other Symptoms to Look For?

With less lubrication, the skin around your vagina — your vulva — may burn or itch. Menopause symptoms can also affect your bladder and urethra. You may pee more often or feel a need to get to the bathroom right away. You may get more urinary tract infections. If your vaginal tissue tears, you may bleed a little after sex.

Your doctor can help you find out if your symptoms are related to menopause or not. See your doctor right away if you have any bleeding. It may not be anything to worry about. But it could be a sign of something serious.

What Are the Treatment Options?

One of the best ways to keep pain with sex from happening is to have more sex. Regular sexual activity can bump up blood flow and moisture to your vagina. To help make intimacy more comfortable, your doctor will likely offer you a step-by-step approach. They’ll usually start with the easiest option and go from there.

Your treatment may include:

For dryness and atrophy:

  • Lubricants to use during sex
  • Vaginal moisturizers
  • Low-dose vaginal estrogen
  • Estrogen-like medicine

If muscle or vaginal tightness causes pain, you may need:

  • Pelvic floor therapy
  • Vaginal dilators

Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor a lot of questions. It’s their job to help you feel comfortable through your treatment process.

Feature: In This Difficult Marriage, Democrats Must Love Biden

0
Feature

The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13 at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania has sucked the oxygen from the debate on President Joe Biden’s fitness for a second term. The discussion will resurface, but Democrats should forget it. The party is stuck with Biden.

The odds are daunting. It must feel like a difficult marriage heading for a shipwreck. However, with only four months to the election, facing the odds is the only way to overcome them. Expectedly, Biden doubled down on his decision to run after the presidential debate with Trump left the president looking like the victim of a car crash.

He has tried to redeem himself several times and has snagged on his speeches every time. Yet, despite his frail health, stumbling speeches, and the mocking caricatures in the media, Biden insists he would stay in the race.

I know I’m not a young man,” Biden said after the debate with Trump. “I don’t walk as easy as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know — I know how to tell the truth!”

Stuck on him

As doubts about his fitness persist, one truth that he weighs is whether it’s in his party’s best interest to run. With a heavy heart, it’s fair to say that the answer is yes. Democrats are stuck with Biden. However worrying the prospects of a defeat – particularly a defeat to Trump – might seem, Biden’s candidacy still gives the party the best chance to win or rebuild.

Some think Biden should let Vice President Kamala Harris run. She has received support from members of Congress, especially from her state of California, women organisations, progressive activists, and sections of the Asian American community.

Her supporters have given reasons, from her relatively younger age to the likelihood that, given her background as a prosecutor and Attorney General, she would pay more attention to issues like criminal justice reform, immigration and healthcare. Others have added that her ethnic nationality would bring diversity to the ticket and energise Latinos, Asians and Blacks, who are increasingly important demographics among voters.

Others, like Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Michigan governors, have also been mentioned as possible Biden replacements, but none would appear as viable as Harris. Yet, for all the promises she offers, there are many reasons Biden, instead of Harris, remains the Democrats’ best card.

Remember Hilary?

Hilary Clinton, former First Lady and Secretary of State, apart from being a senator, a white woman and one of the best-kept secrets of the deep state, could not defeat Trump in 2016 because America was not ready. It was unprepared to discard the bogey of an “evil” Clinton dynasty. It was – and still is – unprepared for a female president.

Sure, more women are serving in the US Congress today, and voters’ attitudes toward having a female president have slightly improved. But not so fast when a woman of colour is on the ballot.

We never know what might have happened if Hilary challenged Trump again in 2020. But she declined not only because the previous contest had left her with deep emotional scars but because the Democratic party had also come to the inevitable conclusion that in what was supposed to be a post-modern society, gender – and the elephant in the room, race – remained a big issue.

It’s unlikely that Harris would succeed where Clinton failed, a hint that may also be responsible for Michelle Obama staying out of the race despite her popularity in the opinion polls.

Harris’ bonafide

Harris’ slim chance against Trump has little to do with her credentials. She was a former Attorney General and senator from California who formed a bipartisan coalition to enact a $1 trillion investment in infrastructure to remove every lead pipe in the US. She has also been on the frontline to reform the healthcare system, especially among the vulnerable, and reduce gun violence, among other things.

On a typical day, Harris is an asset to the Democratic party and might still be for some time. But this November election is an unusual one. America is deeply divided, and trust in politics is so severely broken that a Wall Street Journal poll indicated that even though this is the first presidential rematch in five decades, nearly 10 per cent of voters are still undecided.

That shouldn’t be because voters have records to judge the contestants: Trump, the demagogue, cut taxes for the middle class and massively removed regulations, among other things; Biden, on the other hand, has recorded two crucial years of job growth in a long time and managed to keep the economy steady, despite the supply chain disruptions of COVID-19. Inflation has taken a significant toll on families but could have been worse.

The jury is out on voters’ feelings, especially where it matters most: their pockets. Although the demographics of the undecided population – less educated, less wealthy, less politically aware and engaged, less interested in politics, but definitely more diverse – should favour Harris, the “silent voters” or “hidden Trump voters” who blindsided pollsters and torpedoed Clinton eight years ago are still alive and well.

Teflon Trump thrives in scandals. Today’s Feeble Joe is not the same Biden who faced Trump four years ago and got away by the skin of his teeth. While he is weaker, frailer and poorer even at sharing his accomplishments in the last four years, his opponent, Trump, has been emboldened by his worst excesses. The race for the US presidency is a match-up between horror and uncertainty.

Strength in weakness

Yet, Biden’s weaknesses, especially his common touch – not Harris’ strengths – are the Democrats’ most potent weapon against a candidate who would lie, cheat, inflate, incite and routinely invent stories to get by. It’s a hard thing to say, but Biden, with all his frailties, is the medicine for Trump’s demagoguery.

Biden stepping down at this time will further weaken and divide the Democrats, giving them very little time to rally before the election. And if the worst, a Trump victory happens – which I think is improbable – then the party would have the chance to rebuild from its potentially less fragmented ruins.

What’s in it for Africa? Heads or tails, not a lot. Trump made clear that it was America first and last and the rest of the world, especially Africa, was shithole. Some still romanticise the Biden Senate years, when he spoke against apartheid, railed against injustice in the Middle East and pursued global peace through multilateralism.

A new Biden

That was then. The Biden of the last four years has massively funded Ukraine’s senseless war with Russia, a meat grinder if ever there was one, and paid scant attention to Africa. He has also proved utterly ineffective in getting Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the killings in Gaza.

The election in November is not about Africa. It’s about whether an exceptional country that lost its way in 2016 – with horrific consequences for the rest of the world – is determined to lose it yet again.

Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Fredrick Asare has reacted to his side’s victory over Hearts of Oak in the Democracy Cup.

The Porcupine Warriors defeated Hearts of Oak 2-1 to win the inaugural edition of the Cup, which was played to celebrate the country’s 30th anniversary of parliamentary democracy.

The game which was preceded by a match between Parliamentarians and former Black Stars players attracted huge crowds at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Asante Kotoko took a first-half lead through midfielder Justice Blay from the spot but Hearts of Oak levelled through Asamoah Boateng Afriyie. Peter Amidu Acquah snatched the winner on the hour mark as the Reds won the trophy.

“Democracy Cup marked,” posted Asare on social media with photos from the match.

The former Accra Lions goalkeeper was the captain of the side for the epic encounter and it seems he may lead the club for the upcoming campaign.

Kobbie Mainoo blasted for ‘not understanding his position’ during Euro 2024

0
Kobbie Mainoo (m)

Graeme Souness has criticised Kobbie Mainoo for ‘not understanding his position’ after England’s crushing 2-1 defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final last Sunday.

The Manchester United midfielder, 19, enjoyed his breakthrough season at Old Trafford last campaign, establishing himself as a regular under Erik ten Hag before earning his stripes with the Three Lions ahead of the European Championship.

Mainoo began the tournament on the bench — as Gareth Southgate experimented during the group stage with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallagher alongside Declan Rice in midfield — but started all four knockout matches after frequently impressing as a substitute.

The teenager shone as one of England’s brightest players against Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands, earning his place for the final after just eight caps for his country.

Mainoo struggled to make an impact during the showpiece in Berlin and was hooked off midway through the second half for substitute Cole Palmer, who cancelled out Nico Williams’ strike with a superb equaliser from outside the box before Mikel Oyarzabal scored a heartbreaking 86th-minute winning goal for Spain.

Despite admitting that Mainoo is ‘very talented on the ball’, Souness criticised the youngster for his ‘naivety’ in an England shirt, claiming that he ‘wanders’ too far from his position in midfield.

‘I think he’s really good on the ball, he’s very talented on the ball,’ Souness told the Up Front podcast.
